    My biggest problem with this game is that there’s so much lore that they barely explain, and more time on it could have made the symbolism clearer, but as it is I think the games story asks way too much of the player. No more heroes was not only enjoyable on the surface level thanks to the very clear rules laid out, but because you could go past that and find some interesting ideas behind it. Killer is dead is essentially a brick wall you have to break down with your bare fists to get a truly rewarding experience

    Journalists generally hate sexy stuff and overexaggerate it. I admit I am a perv but even I have standards. If it's just sexy with no substance, I'd get bored and wanna do something else
    Kinda feel bad for Suda-san since publishers restrict his visions a lot of the time. He's better off doing his own thing in his own studio

      @Vulgar Tale Oh yeah, how horrible it is that game developers nowadays can make games about other types of people! What a terrible injustice this is that the market has widened ever so slightly to allow for historically marginalized ideas to gain some shred of popularity. Truly, this is something worth being upset about.

    I always loved the unsettling and creepy feel of this game and the soundtrack. Gave me cosmic horror vibes. The whole stuff with the moon and whatnot was spooky to me.
    However I got almost instantly bored with this game. When the combat was fun, it was really fun. But as soon as you took a hit and had to reset to that slow ass shit again it was the equivalent of an elephant dropping a ten ton dump on your face. This was the first Suda game that I outright didn’t even bother finishing and it marked the end of my obsession with him and No More Heroes. It wasn’t until Travis Strikes Again as well as your glorious videos that my love for him sparked back up again. I can’t thank you enough. CZcams really needed a “No More Heroes Guy” and you fit the bill better than anybody. I hope your channel continues to grow man! 💙

    You didn't mention the fact that DAVID Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World (which is clearly mentioned in the game) serves as the outline for David and Mondo's struggle. It was written at a time where Bowie was trying to move past the glamorous past of his previous work, dressing more neatly and less flashily (hence Mondo's design). The song speaks of how Bowie encounters Ziggy Stardust, the more showman, flashy side of himself, who had betrayed the world and sold his soul. The song ends with them becoming one, with the line "I thought you died alone a long long time ago" becoming "We should have died alone a long long time ago". Suck it Kojima.

    probably my most waited video on this channel. killer is dead is my favorite suda51 game besides both of the no more heroes but i was disappointed that we will most likely get a sequel to this game. the concept of the wires are similar to the nobodies in kingdom hearts because both of them have a stronger form of themselves to command them. i liked the concept of characters representing planets like mika representing the sun or david as the moon. again the plot would be a lot more interesting if we did get a sequel but we gotta wait and see what they'll do with shadows of the damned since johnson made a cameo in travis strikes again.

    So I'd been a Suda51 fan since killer7 came out, but lemme tell ya, seeing the very first Japanese trailer for KID, it got me so hyped and brimming with inspiration that (no joke) I went and wrote a frickin' novel-length story in the time leading up to the game's release date. Just the teaser of this game alone was enough to inspire me to write one of my best written works to date.
    Of course, the actual game I considered mediocre compared to previous games and my own hyped-up expectations, though it had its cool moments and bumpin' music. And I never knew about the Osama Bin Laden correlations that led to this game's concept, so that was something cool to have learned. Thanks very much for yet another informative vid!

I tend to only focus on the big fights for this game and to be frank its still one of my personal favorite action games. I just love the speed of this game. Even some of the bosses got me to really enjoy them like I did with No More Heroes. It wasn't a full return to form, but for a fan of No More Heroes and not a full Grasshopper yet, this was something extremely fun for me to sink my teeth into.

  • @ZappBranniglenn
    @ZappBranniglenn Před 5 lety +3

    After discovering this game's steam port inbetween this video and the last, I decided to dive in. I really enjoyed the fast paced combat and stylish kills. While I'm afraid that's the only highlight of the game for me, it was certainly enough - probably due to the game's fairly short length. I also found it a touch easy, particularly the moment I unlocked the ability to convert Blood into Health. But since the game allows you to swap the difficulty mid playthrough that was an issue I could have remedied if I was really itching for more challenge. I skipped the Gigolo missions pretty quick after failing the first one, and then was bummed out to find that the extra weapons were locked behind these missions, including the drill that was the answer to all those holes in the wall I kept finding in levels.
    The characters and story were very throwaway. The 007 inspiration never crossed my mind while playing and I still don't see it. The most obvious distinction is that Mondo is an assassin, not a spy. How could he be inconspicuous carrying a samurai sword and arm cannon? Mondo's design just feels like way too many ideas shoved into one protagonist that a normal team of writers would have cut down on in order to single out that character's identity for the audience. Then again, maybe it's that logic that Suda rejects with his protagonists. They're genuinely difficult to describe in one sentence without using an uncomfortable amount of adjectives.

  • @queazy03
    @queazy03 Před 2 lety +10

    You seriously paid attention to video game journalists? Damn, you got played.
    The story has much more layers than you recognize (Dolly being the drowned Moon River child & able to mind wipe/control people through their dreams such as Mondo, Moon/Earth hidden in people's eyes, everybody was unwittingly following David's plan, you play as David in the first chapter). For the majority of this game Mondo was a complete lifeless blank slate, by Dolly/David's design. He didn't even know the enemies he was killing were called "Wires", just point them in a direction and he kills them like a tool. He's only (unwittingly) doing the job so he can chase tail, he doesn't even know why. This is why later David brings up the chess game, where the player who goes first has an advantage, but in this case one player moves every chess piece to where he wants while the other player wakes up from amnesia. I'm surprised you didn't dig deeper about the drama behind the scenes like you do with your other videos like Shadows Of The Damned because, secretly, the story is somewhat unfinished because Suda51 was dealing with his company being bought out by Gung Ho (which Suda seems to be distancing himself from now, like it was an bad decision that hurt him). Look at the concept art, there was so much more planned. Moon was supposed to have bigger impact on story, it was a tourist attraction that people would regularly visit, there was concept art about the spaceship/blimp airplane that would transport people to the moon. Giggolo mode there's something you fail to mention, but in those cases Mondo is literally the prostitute in those situations, he is getting paid to sleep with those women (you even see him sign the checks he gets from them). Pretty sad to see you just fall in line with those video game journalists who in unison call everything sexist / racists / homophobic / insert character assassination here, and you'd better do what they say or they'll call you one, then turn around and talk about how important creativity and individuality is

    Killer is dead for me ranks pretty highly as far as Grasshopper games. While I don’t think it’s near as good as No more heroes or Killer 7, I love the art direction, yamaoka’s music, and it’s just a really fun action game. The giggolo missions are easily the most boring part of the game, but that’s the only big issue I have with it gameplay wise.
    I do agree with Killer is dead’s narrative is better than people give it credit for, especially in regards with mondo. However I wasn’t aware of the Bin laden thing that suda was aiming for when coming up with mondo, so I think that makes me appreciate the game more than I already do.

    Nice, like many others this is the one I've been waiting to hear your opinion of. Unlike many others though, I'm coning form a different side, this is the game that started turning me off Suda games. I dunno, it just really didn't grab me, I played it through and through trying to work out if it was me. But after playing enough to get the platinum trophy, I came to the conclusion it really wasn't for me and it just felt weird because No More Heroes and 2 are my favourite Suda games.
    The Gigolo Missions I don't have a problem with how they're framed, they want to do sexy dating minigame in a weird way that's just a little too creepy, well considering what else is out there I'm not about to judge. But tying the subweapons to them? I didn't know that in my first run, I didn't do any Gigolo missions because I wanted to save money for other thins and not presents for the ladies. So yeah I didn't even have access to the really handy subweapons because there was no indication they were gated by the Gigolo Missions, all because I wanted to save money for other things I thought it would useful for my run >_>

I understand the point of the women you date in between missions and I'll give my explanation real quick but STILL those mini games could have been handled better. Anywho: Mondo isn't any different than the women he bangs and ignores. The government uses him and others to do their hit jobs for them and when they've gone too far/fallen in love they are thrown away. Bryan is willing to have us offed in the giant mission when it looks like maybe we're about to succumb to the darkness. It's similar how this use then throw away mentality is mirrored between ourselves and the women we seduce. I'm sure somebody will elaborate more on this but there's the spark for it.

    As with every Suda 51 game I've played (KiD, SotD and NHM:Paradise, all on PS3), can't help but feel all these games could've been a lot better. KiD could've been the best, but the gameplay loop is boring, mission structure is all wack and lacks variety. SotD is a technical nightmare (at least on PS3) and surprisingly also lavls variety, and NMH: Paradise has the same issues.
    Hopefully No More Heroes 3 feels like a proper game, not asking Suda to copy Capcom or Platinum, but at least Hideaki Itsuna and Yoko Taro know how to direct a game series.
    Actually, Suda could learn something from Yoko Taro in terms of directing and transmitting messages through weird visuks and gameolay mechanics. For all uts fault, I find Nier: Automata a lot more satisfying to play than say, Killer is Dead or NMH.

    Killer is dead is a really entertaining, unique experience, but there is one major flaw.
    Mika is the fucking worst, Jesus Christ.
    Mercifully you only have to do the pervy missions a few times to get the musselback upgrades

    • @Ghenry
      @Ghenry  Před 5 lety +2

      Idunno, I didn't find Mika too unbearable. A bit obnoxious, sure, but nothing awful. And seeing how she took the news of what happened to Mondo was a bit heart-tugging. They could've made the voice-actress do an obnoxious sobbing noise, but instead that last time you see her was surprisingly reserved.

      I felt like he said it before missions as, like, a statement of intent- The job... Killer is Dead. -'This is my job... I'm definitely going to kill the target.'
      A little like the infamous "You're already dead." line from Fist of the North Star.

    Yeah, I remember passing on this game because of Gigolo mode. I'm glad I did, I don't care about thots, just give me my damn upgrade and let's continue the story. Not even Suda51 wanted to push this thing too hard, I will forever see this game as incomplete as Shadow of the Damned.
    This doesn't have anything to do with SJWs, Gigolo mode was a mistake that kills interested for the Western market because most people aren't fucking degenerate. Open your eyes, nobody wants tasteless fanservice in a Suda51 game.

  • @GuileOhio
    @GuileOhio Před 5 lety +3

    It's easy to dismiss the journalist backlash against Gigolo mode as oversensitivity, but it's also too naive to lump it as just "a small bad part of an otherwise good game" like it's just a bit of bad gameplay holding the rest back. Sure, it's just a fraction of the whole, and technically optional, but it's undeniably sexist as fuck and almost whiplash inducingly divorced from the feel of the rest of the game, and it's obvious why your average reviewer is unable to just brush past that. I personally felt embarassed as fuck when I played it myself, and was content with just skipping the minigame altogether, even if it meant missing out on weapons. Not offended or anything, just a massive "why tho". Good game otherwise, though the story failed to leave any impact whatsoever on me, unlike Killer7. I really didn't remember a thing about the story aside from the chapter bosses and their little narratives.
    Really looking forward to Let it Die, though. Great game, had a LOT of fun with it and liked it enough to struggle my way to beating the game, but holy **SHIT** is the balancing all sorts of wack on that one. Progressing beyond floor 20 was a self-flagellating slog, creating new characters after you'd already climbed a lot of the tower was arbitrarily painful, and late-game bosses fluctuated between 'virtually impossible' and 'cakewalk' based solely on how many invincibility/invisibility mushrooms you could hoard and scarf down before the fight. What a weird set of ideas.

    • @chrisossu2070
      @chrisossu2070 Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah, I actually felt kind of embarrassed playing through those, and the way they worked just really confused me. I really would've preferred Suda's original vision of these missions, which sounded like they played more like traditional dating visual novels.

    • @Stathio
      @Stathio Před 5 lety +1

      The fact that he says stuff completely out of character like "Magnifico!" and did the goofy thumbs-up and stuff made me just see them as dumb comic relief between stages of an otherwise pretty serious game, as well as commenting on Mondo as a character. Like, it made it completely impossible to see them as anything other than a joke, I feel like that's what a lot of people missed about them. I mean yeah- they were dumb and uninteresting aside from Mondo acting like a goof, but I think them being a joke at Mondo's expense is the whole point.
      Either way, though- it sucked that the publisher pushed Suda to include them in that shallow and kinda skeevy form. Keep the goofiness, and heck, even the eroticism, but just make them more interesting to play, and have actual dialogue/interactions etc. and they could be fun little comic relief sidemissions which could give more characterisation to Mondo and the women too.
