  • In recent years, many tog fishermen have traded their conventional tackle for spinning gear, especially when fishing jigs. In this video, OTW Editor, Jimmy Fee, fresh off a blackfish trip with Captain BJ Silvia of Flippin’ Out Charters, breaks down the benefits of spinning tackle for tautog.

    I’m stoked when I figure these things out myself and it all really comes out to be correct. I started using a 6’3 trevala s jigging rod to tog jig because of all the reasons you say. I pair it with a clash 4000. 20# braid and a long 40# leader for abrasion resistance. Still go for my traditional setup for the wrecks out front tho. But light jigs 1/2-1oz is def amazing way to catch big tog. My best is around 8#s as well still looking for that 10 if I’m jig in the bay or rig out from

    My first tog trip I went on a party boat with a shakespeare sturdy stick. I paired it with a Daiwa emcast 6000. This is a department store setup. Total cost was $60 I think, maybe less. I absolutely slayed it! Every time I dropped the jig straight down I caught a Tog. People were barely catching anything to the point were they were pissed at me. The captain himself came down from the wheel house to cut my green crab bait. I won the cash pot for biggest tog caught on the boat that day! On that note I will admit, I had to take a break after every 5 fish. My setup was heavy and wore me out. I must have caught about 25 fish total. After the big one, I sat down for the rest of the trip. You don't need expensive equipment to catch these guys, but your body will thank you for it.

    I have a spinning outfit in addition to my two heavy baitcasters. It's strung with 20lb mono (as opposed to 50lb on my other two outfits) and I have several jigs.

    You don't need flocarbon when fishing deep. The fish can't see but I am a big believer in clam chum.

      He literally explained this. He doesn't use it for it's visibility, he uses it for it's abrasion resistance. That's something that's kinda important when fishing wrecks.

    I have switching completely to spinner for tog I’m running a Diawa BG3500 and fully customized ugly stick inshore select as an experiment. I have in cut down about 3 feet with Joe Bags Eyes and and ultra light tip

      I set up an old GX2 blank with saltwater (and more) guides, cut the tip length a little and extended the handle length 6”. Only used it a few times- is decent despite the weight how’s yours holding up?

    If you find yourself on a reef with no live bait just use slow-pitch jigs. Also, tautog will eat epoxy jigs if you snap jig them properly.

    What knot do you use when you have a 8 ft leader on to your braid ? Also what type of braid do you use that you have right there ?

    • @OnTheWaterMedia
      @OnTheWaterMedia  Před 2 lety +1

      I like the FG knot, but the albright knot works as well. If the leader is short enough that you aren't reeling the knot onto the spool, a uni-to-uni knot works as well.
      That was 30-pound-test Daiwa J-Braid x8.

    How long a leader are you using and do you adjust the length based on the current?

    • @OnTheWaterMedia
      @OnTheWaterMedia  Před 9 měsíci

      6 to 8 feet, and with a jig, don't adjust the leader length so much.
      On a rig, you'd want to shorten up the leader in slower current and lengthen when it's really moving.

    No one ever talks about the cons of using spinning gear ⚙️!!!
    The average spinning reel can’t withstand the abuse of hardcore tog fishing !!!
    So unless you’re using a saltiga or Stella it won’t endure the abuse !
