Forget the Septic System and water service and go for a composting toilet. It's clean, more sanitary, and you can reuse the waste! Plus having a composting system instead of a septic or sewer based system means you can build your homestead anywhere rather than by a roadside for water line access. Even a septic system needs water to flush the toilet.
Over all, a composting system like this will save you BIG MONEY! All you need is a bucket.

We've been using peat moss for nearly two years, works great, easy to source, doesn't smell decomposes well in the compost pile
I think peat moss is outlawed in some areas.
Bay hay and feed:
"Areas in Ireland have already banned the harvesting of peat moss altogether. Producers in both Canada and the United States maintain that they never cut sphagnum faster than it grows, and leave behind enough peat to ensure regeneration."
@@dandavatsdasa8345 that's surprising. It's a staple of most media mixes and is available at every nursery I've ever been too
Great video! This is so simple. Not to mention the foolish waste of potable clean water to wash waste away!
In my town all I need is an approved grey water design and I can install it myself. Compost potty is THE way to go. I've been using pine shaving in the camper potty and all I smell is pine.
Hayseed Homestead what state??
dgmickley yeah, what state allows this?? We have to keep ours secret.
Humanure is not grey water it is black water fyi. Grey water is like shower and sink water.
@@andrewmaurizzi7468 Yeah thanks. I was talking about composting toilets tho, not black water systems. Humanure is compost material and doesn't go into any septic system, it goes on the compost heap. If we had a flush toilet it would be different, but we ONLY have sinks and showers going out.
Hey, Zac! I know this is an older video, but the information you shared here is timeless! We are finally about to move out to our property right before Sukkot this year, so we are refreshing our brains on different things we want to do. I just wanted to say, at our property in Sequoyah county, Oklahoma it's just uphill from a creek, so a septic system would cost us around $14,000! We're definitely using this method (and already do when camping). We hope to have some RV hookups installed for future Sukkots, too! Can't wait to finally get moved!!!
Sadly, some states don't allow composting toilets as a stand alone waste system. It's rediculous. But check out the regulations to avoid any problems or fines.
If you are away from the city and burbs who would even know unless you told them. Love to see them go through the effort of finding out what kind of composting you are doing 😂 don’t afraid to be outlaws if you are smart about it
What the Nosy Nancies in Government dinae know won't hurt them.
@@TheMoonbay21while you have a very solid point… the amount of tracking and information the government has in us is crazy and only getting worse every year. They orobabaly have a computer program that goes through alll the houses in the state and determines what each residence had done for sewage disposal and then they say “hmmm people live here and it doesn’t show any permits or signs that sewage was done here” then they send someone to see how you dispose of wate and BAM caught. Technology has made the modern world a nightmare and it’s getting worse. Gotta go up to the attic circle to be left alone ahahahah
I know.
Its an old vid. Still.
I remember a documentary done by the BBC. It looked at enzymes that live on in dead wood.
To show this, a dead chicken was left for one hour on both a wood and plastic chopping board.
Both chopping boards were left overnight and the level of bacteria was mesaured.
As you would expect, the bacteria on the plastic board had a violent population explosion. The bacteria on the wood board however had not grown as enzymes in the wood were preventing their growth.
This is why you get no smell with a composting loo.
"The bacteria on the wood board however had not grown..." // That is counterintuitive!
@@alextrezvy6889 I think it is the result of the wood absorbing the nutrients of the bacteria. Plants have an amazing ability to survive dry environments. So what he was indicating was that the wood chips were absorbing the nutrients the smelly bacteria need to survive. In my opinion of course.
And i have always avoided wooden chopping boards bcz i thunk they were UNsanitary!!! Oh ho ho. I've always used plastic ones. Imagine that.
Theres a LOT of continuous work involved though, so there has to be an able bodied person in the house. Oh, my back hurts... lol.
As far as I am concerned it is less about saving money than saving water and energy which= 0 waste!!..good for environment and the world.....Composting IS the future
In my county, they don't care if you use a composting toilet, but they get you on the kitchen sink water, as they call it blackwater, so no matter what, you need a septic of some kind, regular or alternative, and the alternative is sometimes more cost. The ass hole system make you pay no matter what.
I am trying to prepare for not having the luxuries we have now when crap hits and we dont have the power grid or sanitation or water etc. So this helps alot since we wont care what the government says because they themselves will be in their secret bunkers.
Shalom Zach, just re watched this video, and it brought your in-laws to mind. I am praying that there loss is not breaking them down. Their spirit is so sweet and loving, I will continue to pray for them and you and the boys. It would be nice to see them when they feel they can. G-D bless
Awesome video! Very informing.
Very simple and explained in a down to earth, honest manner. Thanks!
Great system, great plan. What a huge savings, and so practical. I hope to homestead this way someday. Thanks for posting and best wishes--
My dad had gotten a compost toilet for the cabin and all we done was was add a cup or two for when we go for a crap and when it was full my dad put it on the trees in the forest. Also the cabin was off grid and we managed to have running water we put a simple system with a long rubber tube going into the page there was a filter attached to it and it got attached to the pipes that was already installed in the cabin and we had a water tank and we used propane for the lights and for the gas fridge and stove and we had a fire place. So it is possible with the right tools
Such a smart choice. I did this last summer but once I get my own land will incorporate this permanently.
I've been using the Humanure system for 2 years. Since I live alone, I don't generate enough to fill a bin within a years time, in fact, I'm still working on filling my first bin..
Better eat more veggie's lol. Janice
I guess you have a shit load of work to do then jajalol!
@Joe ok Do that and you're just attracting unwanted varmints and eventually polluting any nearby streams that you may need for drinking water.
Build smaller bins. 🤪👍🏻
sounds really good. The information was well taking . Good to think ahead my friend.
I love my composting toilet, we shoulnt be shitting and pissing in our most precious natural resource water! Im taking the black tanks outta my Airstream, composting is the way to go :) Humanure!
"DUFF" (Detritus Under Forest Floor) the black humus under leaves works great too especially if you "Vernment" (new vermiculture method) your "POM" (Personal Organic Material).
Just short of doing the full humanure set up, (so, yes...a bit less ecological), I have a wonderful bucket system in my semi off grid situation in rural NS. I have a bucket with plastic bag inside with cedar mulch as cover material. (This only needs getting rid of once a week or 2 weeks) I have a urine diverter with vinegar bottles that I empty in the lush foliage around the property. (I have learned from others that a little vinegar left in the bottles is 'key' to keeping urine odors at bay.) I absolutely love the simplicity of this way of 'toileting' and it does NOT smell. (I do keep deodorizers nearby to ensure just in case though)... I'm soon going to purchase a ceramic diverter that is hand painted which should really make the whole bathroom experience such a pleasure! haha. Thank you for the great information in this video!
I use the pine pellets from TSC by weting them and rubbing b/t my hands w creats saw dust then i let that dry in the sun and mix with wood ash and a little bio char ....works great then I do just like you around trees and shrubs
I read somewhere that the overspray is so bad in public restrooms that the electric hand dryers blow doo doo on your freshly washed hands. Another excellent reason to air dry.
Thank you for the videos. Stumbled across your site. I subscribed.
Not everybody wants to be off the grid, so the government want us to be dependent on the government, that's why they can't leave the independent people alone!☺say something positive. Love people that are living off the grid!
Greg Lewis being independent is at the top of the list for Terrorists in the USA 🇺🇸 above that of radical Islamic Extremists.
Stealth Urban Off Grid.... is a thing my friend ;-)
greg, there are places like mine that they can care less where you poop as long as you pay your property tax of 15 dollars a year.
@@svetlanikolova7673 where do you live that property tax is 15 dollars a year? I may have to move
@Southeast Missouri Paranormal& Unexlained Mcfarlin Most likely Bulgaria as Svetla Nikolova is a bulgarian name. We filled that country with shit, not only ours. Selled our asses off...
love all the info !!! thanks for all your help ,keep up the good work .
Been using a composting toilet for almost 2 years! There great!

I’ve been considering this as a potential alternative method, but unfortunately I’m not that informed.
May I ask you, is it hygienic? Can you give me any evidence?
Thank you in advance 😊
you can also use worms to turn the compost into worm castings which can even be used on your garden
Using worms do not raise the temps high enough (tho it doesn’t require all that high if kept there for long enough) to destroy any potentially dangerous pathogens. Composting it is best! Safer and gives just as good if not better results than using worms. Using worms for kitchen scraps and such is a good system. But don’t expect acceptable results using them with humanure. Humanure if composed right is safe in your garden. Vermiculture is not safe to use on humanure for the garden.
A better way to do your humanor pile, make your boxes large enough for your tractor shovel to fit.
Also make the sides with chicken wires and spaced sides so the sides get air. Better composting
Seems like a good thing as long as you don't stop self processing the waste. I have a plan for vertical septic sewer / gas recovery.
6:35 Ahahaha! When he said "do do" I immediately said _"He said doo doo"_ then That same thing popped up on the screen as I finished say it. That was good! Thanks for the humour! I always notice when someone says "do" twice and I say that when it happens. Yeah, it's an _old_ joke, but I never got tired of it.
You can shovel out a septic tank then mix the sludge with wood chips then add to compost bin cover with hay or grass clippings. Also use a sludge pump or sump pump to pump the water out so you can climb down in the tank to give it a cleaning.
Septic systems cost in Northeast around $20,000 due to the amount of permits necessary from the municipality. So labor and materials supply cost plus PERMITS raise costs considerably.
Going off grid soon thanks for the help
It's a human litter box!
The local Goodwill had a medical potty seat. It would be the perfect size for a 5 gallon bucket to sit underneath.
Good advice, THANKS.
I am planning on making several composting privys for a few dwellings I have possession of but I am about to set up my bug out and yep....this is the way I plan on going. Watching about every video available. I need to order several urine diverters, unless I can create something that does the same thing.
Cedar is lovely too!
Love this channel. Just found it.
Hi, great video!
We use exactly the same system with the bucket. I have added a duct to the outside and a computer fan and this makes sure that there isnt any odor at all.
We used human manure to fertilizer fields for livestock.we had a company that brought it out already cooked down and sanitized and they spread it in the fields before we tilled it in and seeded the areas.
Thank you we are looking to living off grid God willing.
I kept waiting and waiting to see how you built your whole system from the toilet to the composting bin or bins, and how you store saw dust, hay and also how long the material stays in the toilet bucket before going outside. Didn’t get much helpful info from this video. Do you have a video that explains your whole system in detail ?
humanurehandbook.com/contents.html has detailed instructions. Link for each chapter. P162 detail plans.
If you live in the city you should built one even if you don't plan to use, in case of a big emergency where you may be without water for long terms. No water no flushing toilet, huge stench. A humanure toilet and maybe a large bag of peat moss to cover the feces and no problem.
Indiana new septic system here runs around 12k-20k for the install and must be what's supposedly called a new and improved mound system. It's damn highway robbery.
We we're just forced from our typical septic which was $0.00 a month, to a grinder type of pump system. Cost me 6,000 and now I pay $124.00 a month to flush my toilet. And the local sewer department forced all 20 neighbors on my road to this system. I hate it and will soon be moving because of the cost. Hate it
I don't blame you!
This is where you organize with your neighbors and petition your local councils to not force such unnecessary changes and expenses on you. Local Governments are supposed to work for the communities they represent, not the other way around. I think it's high time people remind them of that fact.
@@Beuwen_The_Dragon well that was already performed by the residents of this area. The health dept lies and said that our sewage is polluting the creeks. You will never win against government agencies even at the local level
GREAT HELP THANKYOU sooo MUCH
Thumbs up guys behind it all it works .
I read somewhere that you can use the humanure on your veg garden too provided you monitor and control the temperate in your humanure compost heap to kill whatever dangerous microbes there are.
Heat and time. You wait long enough, few years, and it should be fine. Everything breaks down eventually.
great info thanks for sharing.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of municipalities that require either a full septic system or one of those very expensive, commercially built composting toilets ($3,000+) in order to be able to live on the property full time, legally.
Where can you find that commercially built composting toilets?
We call such places and people 'meddlers".
Wood ash works if you cant find sawdust, charcoal being a natural filter media. But it is an acid, so you have to mind what plants you put it near.
Great advice.
Any brown forest floor matter will work great and it composts a lot quicker!!!
Thank you thank you thank you
there's a newer product in the west, called "Gro - Kashi" its a microbe additive, made for gardens. if you add a little to the humanure, it will cut the composting time in half. i love the stuff.
I want to design a surface Septic tank. Top allows sunlight to evaporate the water, it is collected through condensers and processed for reuse. The grease would be included in the solids for worm beds.
Did have a problem with maggots on the turd bucket. Figured to woop that with cayenne pepper. It worked.
This is wonderful! I think I would add a bidet to wash myself after my toilet business because I don't like using toilet paper. A bidet is commonly found in bathrooms in Italy since the time people had no running water in the house. So you keep your compost toilet on one side but have a washing container - even a bucket - but it's easier if you can sit down. I forgot, also as I vegan I think my manure is exceptional for the environment!
Miracles Happen I knew you were a vegan as soon as you said I use a beday because I don't like to wipe
Plus you have to have a perc test before putting in a septic, and that’s another $1500!
Do you sell the plans with measurements for the bucket holding toilet box??
Our “all organic, totally natural, minimalist” neighbor made a scrunched up face when we told her about our plans for humanure - we chuckled and thought to ourselves “Oh well, we won’t have to plan on sharing our garden with them anymore!”😊😆😆
A lot of places have that electricity/septic rule now. Not only that, composting toilets are not legal in a lot of parts of the country. I've been looking at a lot of dry toilet options because conventional toilets waste so much water. Right now 30% of the country are experiencing drought and 51% are experiencing unusually dry conditions. I'm looking for land to build a homestead but I'd like to do it in a way that's conscious of resources. Anyway, this is great. Thanks for posting.
@Lynn Roberts Are you kidding? Where I live, we supply much of the water that runs down the Mississippi. Our water is relatively clean, by the time it reaches the Golf of Mexico, what they have is a DEAD ZONE (look it up) caused by a toxic liquid. So unless you have purifier, what come out of you kitchen sink is liquid with chemicals added to not kill you right away. So it's not the liquid that is scarce, it the liquid you can actually consume. We have huge oceans, try drinking the water to see what happens.
The septic system for electrical service makes absolutely no sense, there's simply no need. It screams "regulatory capture" by whoever wrote the spec for a what constitutes a legal septic system.
The reason they do that is because there used to be a lot of people who would want electric hook ups for their hunting cabins and only be there once or twice a year. The electric company wasn't getting a return on their investment of hooking up the customer. So now they require the site to have septic as people who purchase that investment are more likely to live on site at least full or part time. Once that was explained to me, it made more sense.
Okay, that I get. Not a use case that had occurred to me.
An American Homestead I am in construction worked building freedom tower. we had toilets that had worms ate all the poop. we also had a subway sandwich shop 80 stories up haha
Now THERE'S some SHIT!
@@Anamericanhomestead i think the more likely reason is whomever lobbied for the regulations and laws in these localities likely had a significant investment in local power and water companies...
Use to be about 3-4k in Tx when I use to build in 2003
Thanks for sharing. What do you do with your grey water? Presumably you use soaps and other household cleaners like an on-grid household would so how do you dispose of that? Does it go back into your garden and crops too or is it harmful to plants? Interesting to see your solutions for the conveniences we take for granted in modern society.
If you use non chemical soaps and such, it is perfectly fine to reuse your grey water in planting gardens.
in some states like texas you would have to do your compost of human waste on a non permable surface cement slab or asphalt pad
I have a homestead as well and I produce a product which makes me roughly $3,000 a week my septic tank and install was 3500 so to me that installation wasn't very costly as far as water usage I collect my Rainwater which is free I have a great pump man he comes out to my property with a 4 x 4 unit no problem my yearly pumping bill is $ 500. I think the humanure idea is great 4 people on a super tight budget. my chickens make all the poop I need for fertilizer hey if you want free hot water stick a hot water heater liner in the middle of a composting pile and it should get to 180 degrees Fahrenheit for as long as the pile remains hot great way for free hot water on a homestead
Sounds like your growing cannabis 😂
@marie that DAY HAS COME!!
Here in eastern Nc a septic system can cost much more than 3 -8000 I got two quotes this past summer and they were 10500 to 12800
Septic in area I live in is crazy. We just moved into an old house and needed a new drain field. That alone was 16000. That wasn't a full septic.
what state are you guys in?
Yes I agree, that humanure is WAY more sanitary. I can't wait to have this type of waste disposal when I start my homestead.
In Texas it has to be an aerobic system and the quotes I got was over 10k
Septic here in southern Ohio is now $25,000.!
They are forcing people to go to a "mound" system instead of the more traditional leach bed, which is around $10,000.
This regulation is creeping out into the rural areas where we live and we live pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Our neighbor that just moved here from Michigan was forced to install a mound system and they about choked when they found out the cost!
$25,000!!! This is why people hate the government!
An American Homestead AND you have to pay to have it inspected annually!😡
can you afford to be legal?
Pammie Doodle just another reason why we won't be homesteading in Ohio...
This is so disappointing to find out...!
We spent a couple of weeks in Ohio camping and we fell in love with it and considered
moving there to homestead...
Then while doing some research I found out about all of the little rules and regulations
Ohio has about living there...!
We could not believe it...!
I refuse to live anywhere that some pencil pusher thinks they can tell me what I can and
cannot do with the land that I purchased with money that I broke my back to earn...!
Who started that rumor this is the land of the free?
I would be willing to bet that if you looked into it having human waste stored the way you do is illegal alomst everywhere. None one the things you are using are designed for the use you are using it for. when it rains the humanure stack drains into the soil etc. does it work? yes, is it safe, yes, does the municipalities do basically the same YES, is most of the fertilizer in the big box stores a result of human waste YES YES YES, but most people dont know that.
I love it, the network of government intrusion , no electricity without septic, so what is the hurdle to septic (other than cost), an inspected registered well?, and what is that connected to.
They take all of these things and linki them so that if you dip a toe in, you have to jump all the way in.
Just remember, YOUR FREE.
Thank You. I want to make an outhouse and now I can do it without digging a six foot deep hole.
Do you have problems with raccoons or opossums. or any other critters or insects?
Fire ash is also good to use.
So everytime you dump your buckets into the composting bin you add organic material hay on top of it
That open bin is completely illegal in my state. Reason, the effluent can get into ground water. It's an environmental release. Research barrel based systems. There's lots of off grid homes here. This is the method you'll get fined for.
Enclosed composting systems are ignored. Even composting in IBC "cage tanks". Use peat moss, not wood chips. That breaks down better. Any raw wood products stubbornly refuse to break down.
High desert off grid, 21 years. Good luck on your adventures.
Very informative ! You guys REALLY know your....uh...
Stuff !
Just one question. What does the toilet look like ? Is it like a built in cabinet with bucket under it - or a manufactured high dollar compost toilet?
😎👍
Wulfy
Septic system in Ottawa, Ontario Canada is $25,000.00 and up!!!
Plus the government only allows us to use a humanure system if we are covering each bucket dump with 2" of earth. Too much red tape up here.
13,000 and up here in NJ.. 5 yrs ago - i am sure much higher to start now.
Just find jou.

read 400 centuries of farming....excellent source of topic information if you are in doubt
I've been reading about a North Korean defector LOADED with all sorts of parasites, some 10" long due to humanure.
Yup. Been goin in a bucket for 2 yrs now. I was worried n.y cabin would stink.. nope. Saw dust works like a charm. Composting it.. works like a charm.
I do have a toilet flange buried under the hardwood floor now and about 30 ft of pipe buried out back that i started before the bucket system. And so it
doesnt go to wasted money i think im going to put in a urinal and barrel homemade tank and use what i had installed earlier.
Sorry ladies..... youre stuck with the bucket. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏻🇺🇸
Just one question i have access to lots of spoiled hay...Buy that i mean it is molding and really dusty so farms don't want to use it for animals and really didn't want it for bedding either because they could still eat it...Would that be a problem in composing as it is moldy ?? thanks LOVE your CZcams channel and thank you for all the information
You may be able to get a load of wood chips from a tree service for nothing or next to nothing.
Did you say if anyone in a county can have a composting potty? What about when you go to get a permit to build? Oh, just saw the date...like you said, is much info online, so hopefully I can find out. Thanks for your videos : )
How do you store all that sawdust? What would you do if during SHTF if you couldn’t get any?
sounds like a very good option. what do you think about a biogas digester system?
Question: Without any illustrations, what are the steps taken after each.. "session"? I mean, you stand up, pull up, zip up, then what? do ya cover with the wood chips after each use? and any other things you can add to deter odor and yet not effect the breakdown proc? thanks
Great build, but may I suggest that you build a funnel into your toilet to separate it out. A funnel with a hose or PVC pipe to a gallon jug, will eliminate any odors you may getting from the urine. It's the urine which is the cause of odor.
Urine does not create any odor when absorbed into sawdust. Dry sawdust will allow scent to escape. If air can flow, smell can flow. Dampened sawdust acts like a sponge, keeping air and moisture trapped. Urine helps keep the system odor-free.
If you're eating healthy (drinking healthy) the way you ought to, Udine shouldn't have all that much smell anyways. If you're taking in a gallon of water every day and cut soda and coffee (and McDonald's) out of your diet, your offal isn't as "polluted" (stinky). Same with your sweat.
Greetings!
I wanna ask you few questions if you don't mind;
You clean your bucket after every use?
I came across advice, to separate #1 and #2, do you separate as well, or?
That's why I put the toilet seat down before I flush and my tooth brush is in the drawer. Still gross but not as........ Janice
Wait a minute! Wife wasn't worried about the smell, and you were? What's wrong with that picture? ;-) Love your vids Bud!
Can you do a video about how you get flowing water for a shower?
8:08 Actually I don't have anything of mine in the loo (bathroom). So those germs don't get on my toothbrush. My toothbrush is in a type of toothbrush container, in a different location.
Weird you would need septic for that.... thanks for the idea, I don't think I'd do that at my house because it's be the one doing it but maybe one day
Your Thomas Craper is the shit.
Just wondering, should it be better if we use bigger bucker, like double the size. The benefits are to put little more saw dusk and to change less often.
I love this, but I chuckle at feeding berries. Here berries can be noxious weeds.
I have been investigating this for some time now and have found that others give the breakdown time a two year period and then say it is safe to use on garden plants etc. Also, do you also combine your food waste in your composting bins as well?
