  • A one Hundred Thousand (100,000) Mile Review of the 2014 - 2018 Silverado 4.3 Liter V6: Is It Worth It?
    There is a common misconception that the Chevy Silverado/GMC Siera 4.3 Liter V6 is not a capable truck, and that it can't hold up to the demands of a typical truck owner. Well, we're here to prove the haters wrong!
    This is a review of the 2014 - 2018 Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra 4.3 Liter V6. After having driven the truck for a total of one hundred thousand miles, it's time for a review of how it's held up! More importantly is this has been enough time behind the wheel, and time of ownership, to give you a thorough and non-biased review of this truck! Whether you are interested in purchasing one of these trucks, already have one, or are just curious as to how they hold up this is the video for you. Dave and Sean dive deep into the nitty-gritty about the ownership of this truck, and what you can expect if you buy one for yourself.
    Parts for thermostat issues some owners of these trucks have had:
    Thermostat: amzn.to/333Vrzl
    Temperature Sensor: amzn.to/3q915bY
    New parts for the seat back issue Dave's truck had can be found here through GM:

    Absolutely love this video and your truck! Unashamed Ford guy here, but I have to give respect to a good truck when I see one, also Silverados are simply great looking. The 4.3L V6, along with 4.8L V8 in the previous generation, are great engines! More than enough power for most people's needs, reliable and fuel efficient. I laugh at people who thinks they need a V8 for a grocery getter, but get a V8 if it makes you happy. Can't wait to see your dad's Silverado!

      Thanks for watching the video! We're glad you enjoyed it. We definitely agree with you about 4.3 V6. It's a great little engine with more than enough power.

  • @RandomIndie
    @RandomIndie Před rokem +34

    One thing people don't mention is that the v6 tends to be more reliable because the V6 isn't putting as much stress on the torque convertor as the V8 engine does, so your transmission will last a bit longer.

    • @RandomIndie
      @RandomIndie Před 10 měsíci +4

      @@kentuckyjones7242 we're talking about transmissions here buddy, pay attention. The weak point of the 3rd gen Silverado has been the torque convertor and there's a growing body of evidence that shows that 5.3 trucks have torque convertors that fail at a higher rate and much faster than the 4.3.

    • @christopherdavisson617
      @christopherdavisson617 Před 9 měsíci +3

      The 4.3 is only bullet proof because people don't over tow/haul and abuse it like they do the V8. It's good motor for sure. I've had it in a Silverado. But it's not that it's better than the V8. It just doesn't get subjected to the same type of stress. If you keep your transmissions maintenanced and don't abuse the truck? The 6 speeds are actually pretty reliable in most cases. They aren't the smoothest shifting and have some weird issues. But they aren't trash. I've seen worse in other brands for sure.

    Great upload! I have an old 2003 Sierra with the old 4.3L LU3, I have bought all kinds of vehicles (since 1967), this is best engine of all of them! Great workhorse, no overheating, still does not burn oil at almost 200K miles. It won't outrun my 400+ horse 383 Silverado but thre is just something intangibly valuable about an inexpensive truck that still runs great after 20 years. Not to mention the $80,000.00 I'll save not having to buy a replacement vehicle anytime soon!

Issues high rpm needed to tow in hilly terrain. As with all gas engines, lucky to get 200 miles on one tank, no method to increase fuel capacity as with diesel. Overall very happy with the truck.

    Thank you for the video! Love my 2014 Chevy Silverado V6. We do tow a 24' travel trailer with it. We added the tow package and break controller. Runs great. At 77000 miles we are running into a few problems within the last 3 months. 1) the a/c fan is only blowing on one side (it's cool rght now so we're not in a hurry to fix that). 2) the alternator went bad and killed our brand new battery (we were stuck in a snow storm but made it out before we lost all power). 3) as of today, seems like we need a new thermostat sensor or a new thermostat (radiator fan turns on running high when we start the truck and keeps running high after we turn the truck off). One thing, though, is that the back cab break light leaks. We live in hot Phoenix AZ so a little water doesn't hurt too much. She's a keeper until I bite for a new truck sometime this year. It will be a V8 4x4 for a little more peace of mind for snow and off-road travel.

Only time the engine really works is up steep hills. Otherwise flat ground the engine temp didn't move from normal... Trans stayed about 196F... I also have a snow plow on mine and does it very well.. I usually plow in 4 hi... If I want to push piles back I use 4 low. I can also say that when you do run e85 you can tow more, and can feel it having more v8 like power. But the mileage is only about 14.5 on average. Good engine currently at 131,488 miles.

    Our family owns a 2001 Chevy Astro AWD minivan, which we bought off of GSA Auctions; it was a gov't surplus vehicle. Great little van, with a fuel-injected 4.3 V6 that makes about 190 to 200 horpsepower. GM first introduced the 4.3 V6 in the first Astros in 1985. For the life of me, I don't understand why GM didn't do more with the 4.3 V6 (essentially a 350 V8 with two cylinders chopped off) in the 1980s and '90s than they did. GM saw fit to fully develop Buick's 3.8 V6; in the late 80s they gave it a thorough improvement program that included a balance shaft; they called it the "Series 3800" engine. (Both the Buick V6 and the Astro 4.3 were 90º V6, derived from older V8s). In 1985, GM showed off a concept car, the Camaro GTZ. The GTZ had a neon banana-yellow pain job, super-aero nose with flush headlights, and a single-piece tilt-forward clamshell hood. The engine: a 4.3 V6 turbo. Judging from how hot the Buick Regal Grand National was in 1987 with the 3.8 V6 turbo, it's a shame the GTZ's engine never made it to production in a Camaro or a Corvette. Instead, GM made the lowest-performance 4.3 V6 available as the base engine in the Chevy Monte Carlo and Caprice. GM could have given the 4.3 V6 the same upgrades as Buick did with the Series 3800, and that 4.3 could have replaced the V8 in the Caprice and Monte Carlo. At least the 4.3 is still available in the Silverado. Too bad GM stopped making the Astro van in 2005, though. An Astro with a 4.3 was a great van.

    One big issue to watch on these gen engines (4.3,5.3 and 6.2) is the high pressure fuel pump. When it starts to fail, it will leak internally and dump gas into the crankcase/oil. If you're truck starts throwing random misfires, it's likely the gasoline vapors are building up in the case and being dumped into the intake through the PCV. Don't neglect it... it will destroy your engine.

    Good morning Dave and Sean. It’s now 7.30 h in Holland 🇳🇱 , why not start the week with a video from you guys😊
    It seems that everyone in America thinks bigger then in Europe. Even the engine of a car must be bigger. The 6 cylinder Chevy seems to be a great tow car with a reasonable fuel economy so why choose for a more expensive 8 cylinder and stop at every gas station 😄
    Here in Holland a gallon petrol almost costs $ 9.- and the last years the engines only get smaller, hybrid or full electric. Such a shame not to hear the fat 6 or 8 cylinders anymore 😢
    For a lot of people Ford, especially the F150 is the Best Buy but they forget all the problems Ford has. When they go to buy a truck they are sold because of the looks and forget the rest 😂
    When I may choose…. Sorry Dave… every day the black truck of you Sean! That really is a beauty!
    Thanks for this one, have a great day/week and see you in the next.

The roads in Holland are great but flat as a pancake and when you hit the gas pedal…. Before you know it you are in Belgium or Germany 😂Most of the trucks are a Ford with a little eco-boost engine, not the real stuff 😂. I have a 2017 GMC sierra 4.3L v6 and I just changed out the water pump because it went bad so I was wondering if the thermostat or temperature sensor is a common thing to go bad with the 4.3L. I don't have 25k on the truck. Usually a water pump will go bad after 100k. There's a guy that owns a business next the were I work and he said he has a 2006 GMC 5.3L V8 and he has over 300k miles and has never had to change the water pump, alternator, starter, transmission, or anything like that on his truck. We've changed the thermostat and temperature sensor on a different 4.3 l V6. It seems to be a common issue regardless of the motor. Not sure if it's a change for the 2014 through 2018 trucks or what. Typically this happens around 70k miles. The 4.3 we change it on had 125k before it had any issues, and those parts needed replaced.

    I did the usual thing when it comes o power… checked all the grounds took them off and cleaned them. Didn’t help
    What fixed the problem was changing the positive and negative battery harnesses with new ones
    There was a nic in the factory harness which would ground on the body of the truck and cause the screens to flicker and sometimes kill the trucks power completely

      @@TheBrothersWorkshop Hey! Thank you for replying! I’m right below Dallas (15 mins) Yes I’ve had my truck for about a year, truck runs great and sounds healthy! Only issue was the muffler. The muffler had a small leak or something that made me cut it out and going to replace it here soon with a flow master muffler!
