It was Aemond plan all along to send Vaghar and trap any dragon that showed up. He was telling this to Cole back in the first episode. Since his brother showed up he took the chance to take him out.

So I’ve finally watched this full reaction. Here are my thoughts on what you all discussed at the end…
Regarding Rhaenyra as a leader - in the book she was not as active in the record as they are making her be in the show version. They have to create character motivation for her.
That said - I am not liking the direction they are taking her in. When they had her younger version being more thoughtful and strategic (even while being a headstrong, selfish and impulsive teen) than she is now - this doesn’t make sense to be that she’s not coming up with any plans. It’s a deviation from the character they had been building when she was younger. For example - Corolls even said during that council meeting “at least the Princess has a plan” when her father and the council could not come up with never mind agree to one.
As far as Rhaenys goes…
She had a mission to protect the castle (and the Lord of that castle who sits on Rhaenyras council) as well as to thwart Cole on the battlefield. She had not completed that mission. That is why she kept going back - to try her best to finish the job. She had to let the other lords who are still in allegiance to Rhaenyra know that they are going to do all they can to uphold their promise of protection. If they fail in the process - that’s one thing, but abandoning the mission is NOT an honorable option. So Rhaenys did what was right. No one knew for sure of Coles plan for an ambush (though I will say I heard one of Rhaenyras council men say that Cole was trying to lure her dragons out - but maybe I’m trippin) Cole didn’t know about Aegon. So Rhaenys CERTAINLY didn’t know she’d be caught up in a two on one situation. That all said
I definitely feel the the Black team should ALWAYS consider who Vhaegar and Aemond are and never send only ONE dragon out in any interactions with the Greens. It sucks that Daemon is divided from Rhaenyra and doing his own thing cause IF he had been at the council meeting he would have said what he said to Rhaenys - that we should send two dragon riders to go up against Vhaegar. I’m pissed no one at the Black meeting said “Oh, what if they bring Vhaegar?” Then perhaps Rhaenys would have recalled what Daemon said to her back in Ep 1. Even so- The fact is, without Daemon (the only other experienced rider on Rhaenyras team) No plan the Black council would have come to- at that particular moment when the decision for Rhanys to go was made - would have been an effective plan against Aemond and Aegon.
Baela and Jace are NOT experienced in war. I think the moment Viscerys died and Rhaenys let Rhaenyra know she’d been Usurped - she and Daemond needed to be schooling the kids with dragons on dragon warfare tactics . What Meylys was doing was actually VERY effective - but it would have worked fully had there been two dragons on the Black team taking Vhaegar down
Young Rhaenyra wasn't strategic at all, she was impulsive, thinking she could do any thing. Old Rhaenyra knows lost and grief, with the whole "aegon's dream" they making her a more cautious character
This is good insight, also agree that Daemon most likely would’ve went with Rhaenys had he been there. I (Alex) think they would’ve stood a chance against vhaegar. Not really counting Aegon because his outcome would’ve been the same one way or another 🤣
Honestly.... Rhaenyra never had any plans when younger. Just impulse. Literally the only plan she was ever coming up with was "send the dragons", "we have dragon riders father", "why not send the dragons"..... Which is the one thing she's trying to avoid now.
@@gabriellehanson2423 good point, hopefully in the aftermath of losing Rhaenys she realizes she needs to be more strategic. Although Rhaenys was her best advisor I(Alex) think. Those men on her counsel have been trying to undermine her every time she isn’t there.
The actress who plays Rhaenys said she went back bc it was duty to defend the castle and even if a small chance to stop/injure Vaghaer - she wanted to. Fleeing would have been seen as cowardice in the time of war.

In the book, the ambush is orchestrated by Aemond, Aegon and Criston together, but the show wants to make Aegon look as stupid and incompetent as possible, so we got his instead. It is clearly stated that Meleys might have had a chance if it had only been Vhaegar, but Sunfyre makes the difference and the two brothers together take her down. Rhaenys is so epic in the book she takes on two dragons and injures one to within an inch of his life, but here she is just suicidal for some reason and keeps returning having two chances to get away and regroup which just makes her look idiotic tbh.
She can’t fly back it would be like abounding those people and wearing her claim to the THRONE she LEFTE INCE SHE WANSNT GONNA DO UT AGAIN ❤
