Actually it was (almost) 6 years later i think.
After Piccolo kidnapped Gohan, it was:
-1 year of training before the arrival of Vegeta.
-2 months later they traveled to Namek.
-1 Year and half later Goku returned to Earth.
-Then 3 years of training before the androids.
CALLBACKS!!!

I know Goku in the manga is supposed to be a little less bright than we saw in DBZ, but I remain convinced to this day that there's no way Toei didn't take some inspiration from TFS Goku when they made Super.

I like how Chichi didn't even bat an eye when he mispronounced Urugay, like she just expects him to be that stupid and to not lie to her.
To be fair to Goku, he somehow kept it a secret for three full years (although admittedly most likely because the subject was never brought up). I wouldn't be surprised in 70%+ of people forgot about the need to conceal that fact for three straight years, especially near the end.
