The 4-cylinder 2021 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 Is Here (What’s The Verdict?)

  • Because the of legendary A80, Supra has come to be defined by its inline-6 engine. The 5th generation 2020 model got one. Now Toyota has brought the turbocharged 4-cylinder model to America. This means the car world will debate whether a 4-cylinder Supra is a real Supra until the end of days and buyers will agonize over which one to buy. Can a Supra with two fewer cylinders still be a good romp? Tom Voelk checks out a Nitro Yellow model. Special thanks to Nate Tennis from DirtFish Rally School for driving duties.

I own the 2023 2.0 Supra. It's more than enough power for me. It's my fountain of youth (73). I don't care about how much "noise" the mufflers make. And how it can corner! I took care of the buffiting with an add on and get 42 MPG highway. Others have reported the same. There is an owner who is 7' tall. Mine was $43,000. No 2.0 Supras for 2025. So much fun to drive. I was going to get the GR86 but none were available and my salesman showed me this. Got it in the Stratosphere blue.

Very cool angle @4:44 Also, thanks Tom for this great review. I've been watching your reviews since the first gen Mazdaspeed3 came out back when you could watch podcasts on iTunes. Great quality as always. Consistent. I LOVE the new Supra. The ONLY problem w/ the 2.0 is that the 6 Cylinder exists...People are ALWAYS comparing the two of them and it makes the 2.0 sound like a value brand in comparison but the truth is, I'd totally be happy with a 2.0 (lighter and with the money saved, I could upgrade brakes and wheels/tires IF i wanted to for much less than the $8,000 price delta between the two engines).

I have a Corvette Grand Sport so this kind of car is interesting to me. Sat in one at the car show. The inside could use more interesting shapes but is very nice. It's really hard for someone 6 feet tall to not hit their head getting in. I really wish it had some sort of targa top though. It doesn't seem like a hardcore track car so the ability to get some extra light / air would make the car seem more fun. Great review as always.

Agree about the manual transmission...a car designed for car enthusiasts should have one as an option. Also seems to me that the interior could use a little more color...the sea of charcoal grey doesn't do the car justice. Also have to agree about yellow cars and the need for the shade to be "right". My wife had a New Beetle back in the day that was yellow and while the color was okay VW later switched to a less bright shade of yellow that I thought was appreciably nicer looking.

Nice car. If I was in the market I would get the 6. I wouldn't be able to sleep with the 4 knowing the 6 is out there. Just wait a little longer and save that extra 10k.

Tom, does this mean that there is good news for the next gen 86/BRZ? If Toyota feels there is room for a 4cyl Supra that there is also room for a nice 2+2 in the showroom as well. $10k-12k price difference btwn the two?

I know there's a 'thing' about the BMW / Toyota overlap, but is that a thing in the real world? Do BMW and Toyota owners / shoppers cross over? I appreciate car journalists do as they basically drive everything. I'm neither a BMW or Toyota officianado, but much prefer the looks of the Toyota, and I agree with Tom that the yellow looks really good. Also, it does seem reasonable that the 4 cyl is fast enough for the road, plus I bet you can tune the a** off the turbo. Shame the 6 sounds better! (6 cyl in the Alpine please....)

How hard is it to make a longer track for the seats otherwise you lose thousands of sale due to people over 6 feet tall makes no sense to me. Yes I’m 6”2.

There's a bar behind the seat that can be removed from what owners say in the forums that's there's also a step by step on how to remove it(someone who was 6'4 was able to get in without removing it). I'd say its all about body type when u get into one of these since some may or may not feel comfortable getting into these.

Many are slapping tunes on these or more left and right with nearly everyone that's being bought RN. I think reliability will be the least of their concern since there are already a bunch doing this or that mods to it anyway.

Great Car even the 4cyl. Standard Transmissions are obsolete. If You ever replaced a Clutch, You find %90 of People who drive them don't know how to property. Most Automatics have Rev Matching & Hill Assist take off programed into them. Most People Who Drive Manual Transmissions use the Clutch for "Hill Assist" and Don't even have a Clue About rev Matching OR How to Do it Properly.

I get that Toyota is trying to keep costs down, but badge engineering has never been a great idea. One of the reasons I love my 1990 300ZX and 1993 Integra GS is that they're Japanese built (some assembly in California I think on the Z). That fact makes the cars more desirable. Toyota could at least ship their 3.5 V-6 the Austrian factory. If it's good enough to sell to Lotus for use in the Evora (and superchargeable to over 400 hp) surely it could be put to good use in the Supra!
