Is the 2021 Toyota Supra 2.0 the Better Value?

  • With a starting price of $42,990 and an as-tested price of $46,450 the Supra 2.0 is at least $8,000 cheaper than the Supra 3.0, while still providing the same great looks and a very similar experience. With a great sounding 4 cylinder engine, crackles and pops from the exhaust, and exciting handling, the Supra 2.0 doesn't have many compromises. It has the same great grip with an even lighter feeling thanks to weighing 217 lbs less than the Supra 3.0 and in most driving situations will be almost as much fun as the 6 cylinder. All these things add up to make the Supra 2.0 a very solid value that is well worth checking out for anyone that's looking for a very fun sports car in the 40-50k range. What do you think about the Supra 2.0? Thanks to Toyota for providing this Supra for me to review!

Too expensive. 42k for 255hp, not a good value. When you consider the fact that Evos and STIs have been making 290hp+ for under 40k since the 2000s, for Toyota to release a 42k four banger with only 255hp in 2020 makes no sense. The only way people will buy these is once they don't sell for the msrp and the dealers are forced to heavily discount them. Once the price goes down to like 37 or 36k, that is when they'll start selling. You can get a camaro ss 1le for 42k or the 2021 Civic Type R. The list goes on.

    Summary of comments:
Everybody complaining about the price being too high for what it is and Matt arguing with them where applicable that "it's really a bargain."
    .
Fact of the matter is that people don't want to pay BMW depreciation, MSRP, & maintenance prices for a Toyota and that plus the lack of a manual transmission is most likely the reason sales have steadily declined month over month since this car's launch. They had trouble getting MSRP in some areas at launch time, it's not a hot selling car at all. We'll see how the 2.0 turns out with this substantial price cut. People may feel it's more worth it now.
    .
There's nothing objectively bad about the car, it's a great car, but I think it was made for a demographic that doesn't really exist. Euro lovers don't want a Toyota, and Toyota owners don't want a BMW. And I think that's one of the major cruxes of this car - it's sort of confused about what it is. It's a good BMW, but it's not what a lot of people wanted the Supra name to be tied to.

"Better" in what way? Engineering is an exercise in compromises. There is rarely one solution that clearly outweighs all the others for all criteria. If inline 6s were better than V8s, then why doesn't every car have one? Which is not to say inline 6s aren't great engines in their own way, as are V8s. I own both an inline 6 powered car (Datsun 240Z and a V8 powered car (Camaro SS 1LE) and I have great respect for both powertrains.
