Walk EPIC Hilltop of Banded Iron Formation in the Upper Peninsula

On this March day in Upper Peninsula we hiked up a somewhat steep hill to reach the hilltop of "Jasper Knob" the worlds largest gemstone. Some 25 million tons, 375 feet above sea level at its peak. Located in Ishpeming, Michigan on the corner of Hill and Jasper Street. It is a must see if ever in the area. There are no signs saying "Jasper Knob" just find the intersection of Jasper Street and Hill Street. There will be a small area to pull off the road, then look for the steps leading up made of Jaspilite "Banded Iron Formation" and follow the trail. It is amazing up there !

Was fortunate that my mom's family had a house right across the street for 80 years up until a couple years ago. Spent a lot of time over there exploring. Anytime I'd visit, heading to the top was the first priority. So beautiful. Now and again, you'll see van loads of geology students from all over the world visiting to study it. All the holes and pits off on the edges of the trail and along Jasper St are from the former mining operations. The entire town of Ishpeming has mine shafts running underneath. There was a sinkhole just around the corner from there not too long ago. Thanks for sharing.
I love that you shared this 🥰 I can imagine how much fun it was to have family right across street and able to visit Jasper knob often. So interesting to know about the sink hole, the geologist students and the mine shafts. I love the area your family lived in. I just know there has to be a lot more to see in your family town. There is a place like that in Connecticut, and they had a lot of iron in the rocks , and they made cannon balls. Lots of cool colors in 2 Billion years old rock .

What an awesome hike. Really? 40% isn't enough? That's very interesting. Kind of good too. It's nice that some things can't be mined away! It really is beautiful. Hard to fathom it's that old. Course it's hard to fathom I'm as old as I am 😆 Some pretty scenery up there. I love that you took this hike and shared the info about the area.
It is fascinating on the way up and up there ! I love the little steps you start off on. No one else came up on this day, it was nice :) Kind of cold and slippery in spots but awesome ! It is hard to believe how old this rock formation is. Some of the fossils I find are millions of years old also. I should mention that more often in the videos. Thanks much for watching😊

My good friend was raised in Ishpeming up near that knob but has never heard of it till I watched this and told him of it. In the house he was raised was a large rock protruding from his bedroom wall and i'm wondering if it might have been jasper. He lives in Ann Arbor now but we are planning another trip up there this Fall to check it out.

Have you made it to Old Negaunee yet? There are lots of foundations of houses that were moved. The foundations on quite a few of them are BIF. I have picked up quite a few chunks of it there. Also if you go to Champion you can get lots of spectacular hematite from the mine dumps there.

@@upnorthadventureswithccc on my bucket list is to go to the Northshore of Lake Superior in Minnesota this summer but it's looking a little bleak with my other knee acting up and probably needing surgery as well. Guess I will see how it plays out.
@@velmamunoz3263 Velma it is my goal also. I want to find fortification banded agates. The agates there are so nice. My other knee also started acting up from the hike up this "Jasper Knob" it is touch and go right now. I hope you can just get a shot, to get you through the summer !

Have you been to the The Meteorite That Buried Michigan | The Sudbury Impact???
I have heard about it and do believe I have seen some signs of it in and around Marquette, MI When ever I find banded iron formation that has some chert in it, I think about the sudbury impact 😊
@@upnorthadventureswithccc On looking into it it is in Canada! It just blew rocks and stone all over Michigan! Very well maybe you have found stone from up there!
