  • Plein air painting adventure using oils at Godrevy beach in Cornwall.
    Oil paints on canvas approximately 12" x 10" (30cm x 25cm).
    Colours used plein air were: Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Vermillion, Magenta, Indian Red, Yellow Ochre, Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Manganese Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ivory Black.
    The light was very flat but it was a calm afternoon on the beach for this outdoor painting. I struggled with the colours and the composition proved difficult, particularly in the foreground areas. I took it as far as I could en plein air (on location) and then completed it in the studio after it had dried for around a week. In the studio with the oils I painted entirely from memory and used my imagination which was great fun!
    Thank you for watching - all the best - Andrew

    Very beautiful! I really enjoyed watching you paint this lovely scene. This beach is amazing with the water, waves, and all the rocks. Loved seeing your companion playing in the sand by you, and he never wandered too far away from you. You finished touching it up nicely in your studio. The only thing I would add is just a few people in the distance, on the beach and out in the water! Looks great! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

      This was a great view but it made for a difficult painting 🖼 glad your channel is going well and the last video was very interesting 👍🏻

    Unusual to see you struggling but very reassuring for a novice! I would really love to be confident painting outdoors but the conditions you faced that evening are the main reason I am fearful. The constant changing light is the biggest challenge for me. You really brought it together at the end to make a lovely painting from a difficult scene. Also loved seeing Mr Basil digging on the beach, he’s so patient!

      Thanks Jennie
      That was a real struggle until I got it back in the studio when it started to make a bit more sense. Basil loves the beach. When we had the border collie as well they both used to play tug of war on the beach and it was hilarious!
      Take care - Andrew

    I like your persistence, Andrew! I think you resolved the foreground well. As you said, the composition is a difficult one with wave line and wet area on sand creating strong diagonals. Thanks for the video!

      Thank you Jorg - I don't like to leave them too long before finishing off in case I don't like them anymore. Happy painting 👌

      Hi Veronica - thank you, glad you liked it. This is our favourite beach. It's opposite St Ives and has a large open expanse of sand. Great for surfing and swimming. Have a great week - Andrew

    Glad I found your channel, I live in newlyn and do abit of painting myself. Our landscape is so different to most of the tutorial videos I watch on YT. I want to start plein air painting. I normally use acrylic on canvas or board. It aways seems to be so much stuff to take out, what's the best way to get outdoors painting but travel light?! 😊

      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  Před rokem

      Hi Jeremy. The weather is good today - finally! I think the best way to travel light is to limit your palette to the essential colours. Take 2 brushes and a lightweight aluminium easel. Try not to take anything you ‘might’ use. Small boards or canvas too 👍🏻
