    This has got to be, hands down, one of the best explanations for picking the right prop for your motor, out there. Especially since I have a 9.9 Mercury.

    I recently purchased my first boat a 13' Saturn inflatable, and I'm planning to get a 6 hp motor maybe a 12. I'm primarily going to be the only one using the boat for fishing, but on occasion cruise around with the wife and kids. Great video

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před rokem

      Gotta get a tach to read your RPMs. If you are outside the RPM range go up or down in pitch to get in that range.

    What would you recommend for a motor that is asked to push upstream in rivers that are full of sand, a few rocks and pretty shallow.
    We try to use the lightest motor possible. I’m thinking somewhere around 20 horse. Would you lower the pitch to get more thrust?

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před rokem +1

      For a super lightweight motor the new Yamaha F25s are ridiculously light, around 120lbs. As far as propping goes, yeah I'd say a lower pitch for more low end power against current would help you. If you find your prop getting chewed up by rocks and sand a stainless propeller might be an idea too.

    I have a 1992 40 horse Johnson and wondering What is the correct pitch for it ? Now it has a 11 3/4 × 17 I was thinking about getting a 10 or 12 pitch do I have to change the 11 3/4 to a smaller diameter?

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před 2 lety

      You'll have to measure your RPMs to see if your pitch needs to go up or down (or the diameter). Both work to increase or decrease your RPMs.

    I have a 24’ pontoon boat. I have a 2010 Mercury 90hp 2-stroke with a 13-3/4X15 3 blade prop. I get about 20mph WOT at about 5300-5400rpm. I’m thinking of switching props. I’m leaning 14x13 (bigger diameter lower pitch) or possible 14-1/2X16 (bigger diameter higher pitch). My main goal is to get the boat up closer to 25mph. Is this possible or is my 90hp just incapable of getting more speed.

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před 11 měsíci

      It looks like the RPM range for your motor is 5000-6000 so you're not far off from being correctly propped. More speed is going to be tough.
      For speed, you want smaller diameter higher pitch.
      For holeshot you want lower pitch and same or higher diameter depending if you are having issues with prop slip.
      If you change prop manufactures, such as going from a mercury prop to a solas prop, RPM changes may not translate with geometry changes between the props.

    • @davidwelday3276
      @davidwelday3276 Před 10 měsíci

      Check out Turning Point Propellers, they say they give you much better performance. I have an 18ft with a 60 hp 11 pitch Solas prop and hit only 5000 RPM and about 19.5 mph, Im thinking it can do a tad better with a better prop, maybe not 25 but something over 20, and you should always have a spare anyway. Spare props save weekends.

    So if my merc 6hp goes about 19mph right now with my 12ft John boat very light by the way what pitch prop should I get to get more speed

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před rokem

      You'll see to check its RPM at max throttle to see if you're able to improve it. If its under the optimal RPM range you could go down in pitch for more speed or if its topping out you could go up for higher top end.

    hi, we have a 2019 mercury 40hp 3 cylinder outboard motor, the propeller can spin very freely clockwise and anti clockwise, byt the only thing that concerns me is the propeller has about 1/5 " play moving back and forth, we tighten the lock nut and secure with tab washer already. Is this normal?
    By the way, the serial # of the motor is 1C560816, we tried to search the mercury marine site to look for the pro gear housing diagram to check if we missed a washer/spacer or something, but the diagram shown is quite different than the one on our motor, can you help? Thanks

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před rokem +1

      There is typically some back and forth movement even with the lock nut, it comes from the gear train.

  • @mulletoutdooradventures6286

    I have been having an rpm issue. Im only getting 4500 rpm at full. I dropped 3in with no difference. Motor is a 2020 40hp Merc 4 stroke. Can i tighten the throttle cable or adjust it? I think it's not reaching the stop at full

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před rokem

      You can definitely adjust the throttle cable if you feel like its not opening up fully. Dropping 3in in pitch with no RPM change does sound like its being limited by something. I have this video here where I installed the throttle cables that might be helpful for adjusting them: czcams.com/video/9HkzMkX-WJg/video.html

    • @mvboutdoors
      @mvboutdoors  Před 5 měsíci

      Depends on what your RPMs are at top speed. If they are 6000+ you can go up to a 10p for a higher top speed. If they are lower than 5500 I wouldn't change anything.
