- In this tutorial, you'll learn the simplest imitative technique - translucent clay and embossing powders. When mixed into the clay, the embossing powders become inclusions.
Once the powder is mixed in, you'll form a Pi - or donut bead. This bead will be the focal point in a simple necklace of light discs.

I loved this! As many tutorials as I've watched, I can't remember any showing that much detail on making tube beads. Thank you for not cutting it short. I learned the reason mine didn't turn out was because I was putting too much pressure on the clay while rolling it. You never know what might be boring to one person, is an ah hah moment for another one, like me! Thank you sooooo much for what you do!!!
Peggy Hice, I too, appreciated the time Donna spent on the tube beads. I had never seen them done quite that way with the stroking and pulling, etc. That's a totally different approach to what I've been doing and it's worth trying.

I like cured and ground clay in with a bit of mica and leaf as well as some embossing powders.

There, you go. Polymer clay is the best cross over material, so many things can be used with it. It's kind of a problem because your studio might get very crowded...ask me how I know...Happy New Year! Big hugs, D
Donna, a trick i use to keep large holed beads centered on the cord against smaller holed beads is to put a seed bead of appropriate size inside the larger hole. Then the other beads or end caps don't ride up on a Center bead, especially. In this case your tube bead might fit inside the hoke in the Center bead.

I have had polymer clay for a year or so now. The only thing I really used it for was to cover fairly large plain buttons which I have used on a number of things. I seem to jump around a lot when it comes to crafting. Recently my daughter shared some polymer clay videos with me that caught her interest and of course planted the seed in me to create. I am trying to find something I enjoy that will stick. Just maybe it is jewelry making. I used your video to make my first piece of jewelry ever using your pattern. I am very pleased. I found a set of four paint tins which will hold 10 domes each which I found on Amazon. A bit flimsy but they work perfectly. I was over anxious for a finished product so I didn't use as many domes. I ended up with 17 domes total on each side by rotating black and clay colored domes. First 8 black with black beads in between, then a set of 4 clay color domes with clay color beads in between, ending with a set of 5 black. I really enjoyed the process and am very pleased with the end product. Your tutorial was very easy to follow, to the point, with just the right information. Dearest Donna, I cannot express enough my gratitude for these wonderful tutorials you provide !!! There’s so much to learn and try and when I recently found your channel I felt like a little kid that found a treasure box full of chocolate! I immediately had a boost of creativity and have hardly put down the clay since😂.
As for the big beautiful stone-like bead in the middle of this tutorial: I thought you could have tried to fit a hollow bead in the opening that seemed a little too big, and the bead caps around it would have kept it in place.

Great tutorial. Re the riding up and larger hole, you could always place a smaller bead inside the hole.
Yes! I tend to string on buna so it might be more difficult but if using tigertail, etc, a bead would definitely do the trick! Thanks for suggesting! 😊❤️

I bough similar for the same purpose, just look for snail tray, plateau à escargot..
the easy answer to the problem of the caps riding up is to fill the hole with a bead small enough to fit in the hole of the donut but with it's own hole just bigg enough for the cord. Like a pony or crow bead.
I have found that when I use embossing powder, it tends to expand when it melts. There seems to be a limit to how much embossing powder the clay can hold before it will crack when baking. I'm thinking of trying to substitute pastel powder for some of the embossing powder to see if I like the results.

Fabulous tutorial. I learned a lot. Thank you. It made me smile every time you said you wouldn't wear the necklace because you weren't going anywhere. SO? I don't think that matters. I'm known for wearing statement necklaces and I wear them at home, alone, even in my grubbies, just because. I feel undressed without one.

Hi Donna, is embossing powder and embossing glaze the same thing? Also, could you tint the translucent clay with alcohol ink before adding the powder or would that dry it out even more? I can’t thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us. Beginner here.
Gina, I went to Tim Holtz's website to look up the product that Donna is referencing and I saw the embossing glaze too. Reading a little, it seems that the embossing glaze is translucent and is used for layering effects. It looks like Ranger no longer carries the distressed embossing powders that Donna is using.
That’s correct, they no longer sell the Tim Holtz Distress Embossing powder, it was a little different in that it has non-melting inclusions along with the melting powder that created a more textured look. However any embossing powder will create that speckled look when distributed through the clay. If you’re looking for a variety of speckled colors you can mix multiple embossing powders in your clay or Ranger (who produces the Tim Holtz embossing line) has embossing colors like verdigris (which Donna also used) and turquoise. Also, the company “Wow” has a large number of embossing powders with mixed colors in a single powder.
I love the distress powders but you can't get them anymore. :(

Did the tim holtz embossing powders change ? Because i ordered one and it doesnt have the black and white flecks like yours ! Is there another brand that you use!?
They do that. Not sure why because the black flecks made the powder, IMO...
