My friend has an re101. I have an re202 and palpable jealousy. But if I get an EF-X3, the tables will turn! It sounds beautiful.
I got one of the tolex units a few months ago in the retro silver. It’s my first ever tape delay unit and I honestly can’t believe I own it. Such an inspiring piece of gear. So glad to see so many CZcamsrs making videos about it lately. EchoFix deserves all the flowers for making this incredible piece of gear!
that drop at 2:12 though. right back to the now. 🤘
53:30 is heaven. 😌
Mark, I've been watching you for awhile now - and it's genuinely fun to see how animated you are in this video. There's zero doubt, you are AMPED about this unit, and it makes me want one too... :)
I am in Love 🥰😍
When I would have and Echo Fix , it will be in my bed hugging it and dreaming about soundscapes, when I can not play it and need sleep.
Amazing job! I've been waiting for someone to make a video like this since the unit was released. I wanted one before but now it's on the top of my list for gear purchases. Thanks for all your work.
There's a mod they can do that disables the erase head so that everything recorded on the tape will play back, effectively turning it into a looper that degrades slowly.
Mark, this unit sounds amazing it's like old school meets new school man I'am all in on this unit just so good Wow! anyway love all the great videos and content so cool!!!
Whoaaaa, blown away.
Tastefull Playing Mark!
Beautiful sounds. I was torn wether to go for this echo fix or the TRex Binson Echorec. In the end, I went for the Binson which sounds incredible also. This analogue gear is so inspiring!
I played the T. rex at NAMM last year and I totally get it. Both units are phenomenal, the binson has so much vibe.
So really you just need both units.
Tape delay is my favorite guitar effect of all time. It’s unlike anything else, and I’ve never played with a real tape delay only pedals. This sounds amazing on YT and in the room must be unreal. However. That price. Ouch
Yeah the real life experience of playing this is incredible. The price point is severe but it’s tracks with the cost and complexity of an analog tape machine vs a digital recreation. “Aspirational” is the the world I’d use for getting to use something like this VS an el cap in that same way that I love a good 1176 plugin but would kill to have a pair of real 76’s in a rack in the studio. But man a real 2a or 76 is pricey.
I believe they also brought the Echorec back as well. Very cool stuff. I have a few Echoplex's to use in stereo and they're pretty interesting compared to plugins. Being able to reamp through a delay pedal or use a plugin or a tape echo is great because spacial effects can get so murky. Being able to mix and match for left / right channels is a good way to retain a bit of separation and not have things sound so much the same.
I believe T Rex is the company that revived the old Binson design. This is taken more from the Roland lineage and having played both, I totally love the resurgence of “classic incredible tape machines but that won’t break on you”
Great vid, Mark. Thanks for your detailed coverage of all the features. In this vid, are you using the EF-X3 as a guitar preamp and going straight into a speaker cabinet, or are you going out of the EF-X3 into a guitar amp that feeds a speaker cab?
Echo fix is in front of an amp for all samples, as listed in the description of the video unless otherwise described for some of the isolated output sections
Beyond Dope ❤
I want one so bad.
Mark, I am curious about your opinion on the Echofix. Is it hissy/ noisy like every other pure tape delay I have ever used? The nature of tape.... Just curious if this one is the same or has Echofix cracked the code to eliminated that hissiness. Thanks .. Love your playing btw it is superb. Love your channel.
As you can probably hear throughout a good portion of the video, there’s still some tape hiss that is almost always inherent to the format. Honestly, I think it’s part of the character of a real tape echo.
@@markjohnstonofficialThanks a lot! I get your point, but I almost wish someone would come up with some delay with like 20 BBD chips in it to make it act like a multi-head tape/drum delay and get rid of this hiss, which personally drives me nuts. Your intro on this video is just awesome btw. Wow
You are outright the best pedal CZcamsr I have the pleasure of subscribing to 🤯 I’d be super curious as to your input, for a simple reverb that plays nicely with others that is Chase bliss, audio housing size or smaller? I love supporting smaller builders!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Re: a single format enclosure reverb; I’d probably say the best small format versatile reverb remains the neunaber immerse mk3. No midi but it works as mono or stereo and it still sounds phenomenal.
How does this compare to something like Strymon pedals. Im just starting with synthesisers and am looking at adding more pedals. Cant lie this sounded the best so far
I’ve actually got a video from more recently on the channel where I shootout the volante, this, and a fake plugin
Unfortinately, the Volante review sounded better that you did... or maybe fortunately.
I don’t think I’ve ever reviewed the Volante
You indeed have done a sound on sound looping video with the volante. I have it memorized, my friend... @@markjohnstonofficial
hmmm, you're really doing your best to hide the white noise with the line volume.. ;) But it's still a great unit
