    I watched rupeni play Rugby World Cup 2003 versus France. He scored that try with Amazing speed.Its the way he ran that was amazing,cause it looked like he wasn't even trying hard.Since then no other player has come close to running like that.So relaxed and elegant.

      @speleokeir Před 3 lety +1

      He's more about explosive acceleration and footwork than 100m speed. There's a difference. The same with players like Jason Robinson, Shane Williams, etc.
      Look at Usain Bolt. Slow out of the blocks compared to many sprinters, but once he got those long legs going he was away. I doubt he'd be as elusive a runner as Cheslin on a rugby field though.

  • @deadcatthinks6725
    @deadcatthinks6725 Před 3 lety +7

    Not sure if he would make the top 10, but Jason Robinson had a great pair of feet on him.

  • @Twopennysau
    @Twopennysau Před 3 lety +5

    An Aussie Sprinter, Trae Williams has recently converted to Rugby 7s - he’s a 10.1s runner.
    Fast is good, but I prefer quick & elusive players - David Campese (1980s & 90s) is my all time favourite, he’d attack from anywhere on the field - sometimes ending up with egg on his face, but was a longtime holder of the most Test tries. Campo also invented the ‘goose step’ much emulated by players since. His best work was during the 1991 World Cup. His try running past a wall of All Black in the final is iconic.
    Sadly, there is not a lot of quality CZcams footage of him.

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir Před 3 lety

      I agree. Acceleration and good footwork tend to be more useful than 100m speed in rugby.

    • @flamingfrancis
      @flamingfrancis Před 3 lety +2

      Campo was certainly a legend of the game. Australian winger Michael Cleary was a dual International at both codes of Rugby and he also won a Bronze medal at the 1962 Commonwealth Games. In those times players did not have the highly specialised footwear today's lot do.

    Isles did a 4.24 dash for the detroit lions, equals the combine record ( not bo jacksons hand timed one) , Rupeni at no 3 could have been the greatest of all time 230 pounds at 10.38 is amazing. The fastest ive ever seen is No 2 Tonderai Chavangha, his highlights versus the blues ( on youtube) is jaw dropping , i've never seen anyone run top speed faster, including U. Bolt. Jason Robinson ( not here) would be the 40 dash champ if it was a thing in rugby, he was under 4.3 easy, he was a bullet out of a gun.

    Why is Perry Baker in this list, he’s just a 7’s player. 7’s was once described “7’s is just the back’s masturbating, just playing with themselves”, put him in a test match and see how fast he is after being hit a few time by a couple of 6’7” 300lbs second row players.

  • @speleokeir
    @speleokeir Před 3 lety +9

    Speed over 100m is less important than acceleration, speed over short distances, say 0-40m and footwork in rugby.
    For instance as a kid there were 2 or 3 kids at school who could beat me over 100m as they were much taller and had longer legs. I had short legs, a low center of gravity and explosive acceleration. On the rugby field nobody could touch me because I could go from standing still to top speed in a few steps and had a sidestep that would leave people on their arses. That was more useful than having a high top end speed.
    Check out players like Jason Robinson, Shane Williams or Cheslin. You'll find people faster than them over 100m but not as explosive over 30m or as good at dodging and weaving. I mainly used to play scrum half (or sometimes wing) and many of the best scrum halves tend to be like that, good acceleration and dodging.

    One of the things to note is that if you're carrying the ball, it's estimated it costs you about 1m in every 10,m you run. So if you see someone who is known for being really fast - Norton and Haban in this video - being outpaced by someone who is carrying the ball, you know the second guy is exceptional.
    The fastest sprinter ever to have at least some attempt at rugby would be Dwain Chambers, an English sprinter who was banned from athletics after failing a drugs test. He had trials in Rugby League with Castleford, but never played professionally. His best time was sub-10s, he won a world title indoors over 60m and reached the world final over 100m outdoors. Rugby league has some other very fast men too.

  • @petegarnett7731
    @petegarnett7731 Před rokem

    In rugby five to 10 metres accelerating from a slow jog is the most important speed measure. Running a good line with change of pace and direction probably comes second. Being in the right place at the right speed third. 50 to100 metre pace is great for Sevens, but rarely used in the full game where only an interception is likely to result in a long solo run. The exceptions are spectacular of course.

  • @graemeduncan2019
    @graemeduncan2019 Před 3 lety

    Perry Baker & Carlin Isles are with the USA Sevens team. Blisteringly quick, and score a good few tries to say the least. Baker's skillset has evolved, and he's more of a rugby player than a sprinter these days, and Carlin a little bit later joined the team and was a natural. Great to watch. :)
    As other have said, for 15s Zammit is a young lad, but when he puts the burners on there are damn few that can catch him.

    1, 5 and 6 are Americans. The guy in the green Jersey that chased down nr7 is a South African called Jongi Nokwe and he did the 40m in 4.4. Brent Russel was another South African who was actually quicker off the mark and has a better 40m time than Bryan Habana (featured in this video) and he also had a faster 100m time than Joe Rocococo (also on this list). Jonah Lomu ran 10.8. I reckon the Australians Nigel Walker and Trae Williams should be on this list too as should the England winger Jonny May at 10.7s. Great video coach.
