The first fight was a classic example of one fighter successfully getting into the head of the other. During all the pre fight hype Duran mocked Leonard calling him coward and dared him to fight toe-to-toe. This prompted Leonard to try and prove Duran was wrong by fighting predominantly in the pocket. And in doing so, he subsequently played right into Roberto Duran's game plan. Of course after reviewing the first fight (several times I'm sure) Leonard understood that he had to commit himself to fighting his fight and NOT his opponent's. Duran was a brilliant fighter in fact, at 135 I have him graded as the best ever.

Not only that apparenty Duran told Leonard that he raped his wife and Angelo Dundee was so angry Duran had said such a rude thing he threatened to leave his corner. Apparently Duran told Dundee to F off too in one of his fights. I got this watching a movie so it may not be true, I respect Durans abilities but I dont think I really respect how he acted personally. Leonard on the other hand was so good at boxing (one of the best) and a classy guy it seemed too. I dont know all that much though I am just a boxer and boxing fan from canada and I didnt even compete.

If I was to guess though I think Duran was just being a jerk to Leonard in that I dont think he was trying to offset or mentally mess with Leonard's😆😅🤣 head, I think Duran was just being a totally insecure rude jackass, I dont think he premeditated some scheme to get Leonard off his game, though thats what the insults did completely. Leonard was totally affected abd threw away his normal footwork routine and he traded it for toe to toe slugging it out and giving Duran his greatest skill in being the king of footwork. Duran paid the price in the second fight (If my memory serves me) and an epic boxing champ Leonard was schooling him and Duran gave up saying the famous "no mas" which means no more" Leonard was jumping for joy in that he won the fight and didnt even have to put in that hard of work for the night!!

Uhhh ,,,,,no. Duran did everything he could to win that fight but he wasn't good enough. Hell, he barely beat Leonard when they fought toe-to-toe in the first fight. Boxing is the art of hitting without getting hit, but sometimes you have to stand and fight. Leonard could do both-but Duran couldn't because he had no Plan "B". No one disputed the first fight that Duran won as he was able to get the win using only Plan "A". How silly would it be to say that Duran should feel silly accepting his victory in the first fight even though he won it fighting in a way that disadvantaged Leonard? Doesn't that sound a little bit silly?

Duran is my all time favorite fighter but he did have a bad habit of getting out of shape after a big fight. But that is on him. I am not sure he would have won the rematch anyway. I just think his fire was gone after Montreal. He had a few terrible fights after New Orleans and then actually looked pretty good against Cuevas. He then demolished Moore and sort of redemed himself in most peoples eyes. His win over Barkley was probably his most impressive win post Montreal though.

I've always been a fan of leonard. Knew he was fast. Knew he was a boxer with a lot of skill, but his boxing skills didn't win this fight! Leonard played the fool acted like a clown and Duran simply didn't want to add to the performance of the clown. Duran came to stand against a boxer, not make faces or jump around like a 7 year old child hoping to get laughs from the other children on the playground. Duran refused to play with Leonard so leonard was given the win. But did Leonard win the boxing match? Not by boxing! 😮🤣😆😡

@@craigwhitham6680Even though Duran was out of shape I really doubt he would have been knocked out. Only Hearns could do that to Duran. Even Hagler and Barkley couldn't knock him out. Also that fight in New Orleans was actually close on the score cards at the time of the stoppage.
I am Duran's biggest fan and make no excuse for him. He liked to eat and party after a big win and had to lose a lot of weight fast to make 147 in this one. That is nobody's fault but his. And I think he quit because he knew just how out of shape he was and would lose a decision. He got frustrated by Ray's showboating and just quit. It was very crazy to everyone and I think afterwards he thought it was crazy too. And after this he really was a broken man. He had a few very unimpressive fights right after this. Finally he seemed sort of back against Cuevas and then Moore. He was definitely not even close to the fighter he was between 1974 and 1978 but one has to be impressed by his wins over Moore and Barkley. Even taking Hagler a close 15 rounds was impressive. He is one of only two fighters to go 15 with Hagler.

@@johnleos1687I am Duran's biggest fan but you can't blame Leonard for this. Duran let himself get out of shape and then really struggled to make weight. He was not physically or mentally ready in New Orleans. Just looking at his eyes pre fight you could tell his fire was out. The fight itself was actually close on the score cards when Duran quit. I think it was a bizarre gut reaction to the taunting and later he realized how stupid the decision to quit was. I have no doubt that even an out of shape Duran would have been able to go the 15 with Leonard. On this night I think he would have lost a close but unanimous decision. He was just too out of shape to do what he did in Montreal. It is very unfortunate that he didn't come into New Orleans in the same physical and mental shape that he was in for Montreal. It would have been another epic fight if he had.

I think he is the greatest lightweight ever. Above lightweight he still had a few impressive fights but he was not the dominant perpetual motion machine he was at lightweight. But I disagree that getting stopped automatically means you were not a great fighter. I could name a ton of all time greats that got stopped at some point in their career. Even Robinson failed to answer a bell due to a heat stroke between rounds. Joe Louis was Ko'd a couple of times. Lennox Lewis, Evander Hollyfield, Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Mohammed Ali, Joe Frazier, Alexis Arguelo, Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Oscar DeLahoya, Manny Pacquiao, Felix Trinidad, Joe Walcott, Archie Moore, Roy Jones, George Foreman and Cesar Chavez were all stopped at some point. For some it was well past prime but for others it was when they were still close to prime. On the other hand I can think of some fighters who never got stopped but the were not great. .Tex Cob would be a great example. Carlos Palomino was a good, but not great welterweight that never got stopped.
