Great review Matt! I have the Nikon 40mm/F2 and love what it does on my Z6 II for simple day and night street photography. I always shoot all my photos in Raw/JPG, so I have more options to tune the images in Post. It is amazing to me that Viltrox has launched a similar lens (with a Metal mount NIKON!!) for a lot less $$$, so I would be interested to see you do a side-by-side comparison of the two. Love your reviews and keep up the great work!!
I recently saw a you tube clip about the A9iii and the global shutter, followed by a Nikon you tube clip and I saw the difference between the photos taken with Sony and with Nikon. I like the Nikon Z8 photos better. They are more beautiful, brighter, clearer, more expressive. Nikon quality remains Nikon quality!
Thanks for the review Matt!
At the price point, .. Seems rather good.I like your sample shots too. Thanks for sharing Matt.
Another terrific review!
40 mm. is a great photo length to have on the camera most of the time 👍
Seems like a nice lens, Matt! But I wonder why any Nikon shooter would buy this one over the Nikon 40mm f2.0. I think it"s better in almost every way, save plastic mount and price, although it's only about a $100 more.
I have to agree....the Nikon 40mm, for the small difference in price, seems like a much better choice. I have the Viltrox 20mm/2.8 and have been happy with it but at this FL, I think Viltrox haven't differentiated themself enough from the native Nikon offering to make it that attractive.
You need to try both lenses to understand how wrong that statement is. They are both flawed lenses but in different ways. I would take Nikon for shooting indoors (not really I have better lenses), but I would take Viltrox for shooting in good light as it's sharper, higher contrast lens.
@@USGrant21stI wouldn't say the Nikkor 40 is flawed. It's a great little lens for the point in the chart it sits. I use mine all time, can't comment on the viltrox but the Nikkor is perfectly fine.
Viltrox is putting out some good lenses for the money point. Character is a good thing. I have the Nikon Z 40mm SE already. But I plan on getting the 20mm for my Zf . Can’t wait to see what else Viltrox releases.
I was hoping you would compare it to the Z40 f2 lens that I have. I guess I am most interested in the Voigtlander 35mm to know if it would be worth upgrading to.
#1 Great little lens. Good to have a budget option.
Cheers Ray
@@MattIrwinPhotography i find it too close to the 35mm. despite that, you could consider doing a 24 - 120f4 comparison between the f - mount and z - mount.
For $100 more, why choose this over Nikon 40mm f/2?
Great common sense review Matt, thanks for giving it your time.
Me... I'm greedy. I would love to see a side by side comparison of Three lenses.
The Viltrox (above) the Nikkor Z 40mm f2 and the Nikkor Z 40mm f2 (SE).
In the UK, if you shop around there is little difference in the prices of all 3.
Not sure this one would find a place in my camera bag. Too many issues than I'm prepared to accept.
I do own the Nikon Z 40mm f/2 lens and would appreciate a side-by-side comparison if you have time.
Its astonishing the number of Z mount lenses released from the Chinese manufactures over the past few months, so many I've lost count. Unfortunately most of these lenses are either for DX format or nestled around the 50mm length, which is my least favourite length. I already have a copy of the Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S lens and hardly ever use it, I just don't like the length, but the IQ is pretty incredible I admit.
Good review Matt, keep them coming. One day I'll get to visit Melbourne, such a colourful city.
I love my Sigma 40mm 1.4.
Sigma 40mm Art is a awsome lens
a Viltrox AF 135 f/2 would be great
No comparisons to the Nikon made 40mm lens? Which is f2
We want something in the 16-35 range, a 14 mm or a 16mm.
Looks pretty good for the $ but won’t be adding it given I have the Nikon 40mm f2 SE for my Zf. I have the 20mm Viltrox as well for the few times I need to go that wide. But a smallish retro S level (Nikkor or otherwise) 40mm with autofocus and ideally an aperture ring, well then I could be tempted to upgrade.
The 20mm yes that is an amazing lens , not so sure about the 40mm I think there are other options out there that might be better
Eh, ill stick to my 40f2
Dont see viltrox selling many of these. Just get the nikkor version.
Viltrox has saved me so much money on these range of lenses.
Both Nikon 40/2 and Viltrox 40/2.5 are mediocre lenses. Nikon is a double gauss design, suffering from spherical aberration, giving it soft, low contrast look, especially at close distances with a significant LoCA. Viltrox is optically optimized much better, resulting in crisper images but also ugly bokeh.
I don’t see why you would buy a cheap Chinese lens if spending so much on a camera?
Hmmm. Maybe to get started you buy a great camera but can’t afford expensive lenses to begin with. Or. Z50 zfc Z5 etc. 😀
That font you used on your thumbnail is very hard to read. Don’t use it again please.
