  • Hi and welcome to Part 3 of my build series for the re-released version of the Tamiya Hotshot.
This chassis goes together very differently to most modern Tamiya kits and there are some important things to look out for. This video focusses on the build of the dampers (shocks) and attaching the front and rear gearbox assemblies to the chassis tub covering build manual steps 15 to 24. I hope you enjoy the build and the odd tip thrown in here and there - Cheers!
    About the Tamiya Hotshot
The Hotshot, released in 1985, is a milestone as the first Tamiya 4 Wheel Drive chassis and the forefather of many similar chassis to come. The front and rear suspension both have single shocks and double wishbone system. The rear damper connects to the wishbones through a relatively complex lever system. The Hotshot chassis evolved during production, and was re-released in 2007 where the chassis has received a lot of smaller changes compared to the vintage ones.

Ah, watching you build that rear monoshock cantilever brought back some serious memories, Mark. The Hotshot is one of the most iconic buggies that came out of the 80's, and that wicked design just makes a guy smile from ear to ear. 😊😊😊

That's suspension so different to my Boomerang, Good mod to stop the rattle in the shock. Strange how they designed the anti roll bar the front has parts to keep it roughly central but the rear seems it can move a lot.

Hi Mark, another great video and I can't wait to see you complete the build. I recently 'revived' my re-re Hotshot and I really enjoy driving this vintage chassis. I think the Torque Tuned motor should be used as a minimum with this car. The standard 540 can doesn't have enough grunt!!!

Hello mate. Oh my goodness that is such a bizarre suspension setup. I sort of knew it was like this but hadn't seen it go together before. So many bits and bobs required just so you can have one shock at each end rather than two. They do look like well engineered shocks and well done for not putting up with that rattle. Does look like a really interesting one to put together and different to anything else. Nice work on the vid as ever. Hope you are enjoying your good Friday. Best wishes to you and yours 😁👍👍

    Hey Mark,
I just wanted to let you know that I've just finished doing the TT-01 rally conversion & had it out for a run today.!
WOW.!!! What a transformation mate, it's totally exceeded my expectations.!
I've used the CVA shocks but fitted longer softer springs that I had left over from a rock crawler build (they're at full extension but compress slightly when it's on its wheels) & I've used very light shock oil to get the realistic body roll, squat & dive I was looking for.
(That's what I find so attractive about the way a rally car drives).!
I'm running a mild brushless system in it, one of those cheap orange 3650/4350kv motors with the deep cooling fins (that actually makes it something more like a 3050 can size) paired with a Hobbywing 60 amp ESC & I'm running it on 3S.
It goes really well off the line & tops out at around 45mph ish.
(It's totally planted at that speed too).!! 👍 👍
It's got a set of cheap (£14) Amazon gold alloy wheels with Fastrax rally blocks too.
I'm still waiting for the L&L Models Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000 body to arrive so I'm just running a beat up old Imprezza body for now.
But again WOW.. It handles sooooo bloody well mate, on tarmac & on gravel.!
I'm honestly blown away with how sure footed & planted it is.!
It's well worth the time & effort to do the conversion, I'd recommend it to anyone who's thinking about doing it.!
Oh.. It jumps now too.. Well, to be fair, it jumped before... It was the landing it used to struggle with.! 😉
It lands beautifully now, there's more than enough travel & damping for it to stay in full control after landing with no bounce.!! 👍 👍
The only thing I had to improvise was the steering links, the stock ones didn't have enough up/down movement in them so I took a spare pair of adjustable links for an FTX Banzai, cut the ends down & used a long M3 grub screw to make them, they work perfectly.!!
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR GETTING ME HOOKED ON TAMIYA.!😉 😉 👍👍👍
Also, I'm getting my M06 dialed in nicely, I'm currently experimenting with tyres & suspension.!!
I wasn't sure about it at first, but once I realised that I needed to adjust my aggressive driving style & be smoother & more gentle with it, I'm bloody loving driving it.!
Tamiya truly are "different" aren't they.!
    Stay safe out there mate & the very best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🙏 ❤️ 📻 🕹️ 🔋 🚗 🚖 🚕 🚔 🚚 🚙 🚘 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚎 🚤 🚁 🛩️ 👍 👍 👍

Hi Alan and Happy Bank Holiday!
Great news about your TT01 rally conversion! You are now a Tamiya expert my friend, hearing about all those excellent mods you've made already! Good to hear it drives as you prefer it to. Nice work!
I was eyeing up those cheap alloy wheels too!
Oh yes the steering links need looking at, sounds like you found a great cheap solution. I have a bag of captive ball joints I got off Amazon and use those to make my own. DIY is always fun to do.
Also good to know the M06 is getting some TLC - it's a great platform. But adapting your driving style to suit each car is a very enjoyable part of the hobby.
"Different" about sums it up mate!
All the vest to you too, keep smiling! Cheers! 😎🍻🤗👊👍

      @alantaylor353 Před 3 měsíci +1

@@MarkBryanRC And a happy bank holiday to you too.!
I trust you've spent it wisely & have been out getting some run time in.!
I'm just in, all my lipos are flat, I'm gasping for a cuppa & my feet are bloody killing me... But I've really enjoyed myself today, it's been a rare dry & bright ish day here in the Scottish Highlands.!
I've been waiting all winter for salt free, dry tarmac... It really makes all the difference when you can get the power down & give them all they've got without constantly having to pick your car out of one ditch or another.! 😂
These last couple of weeks have been teasing me with the odd dry spell here & there.! 😉 😉 😂 😂
      I'm so ready for this summer.!! 👍 👍 👍
I've decided that because I'm so impressed with my TT-01 "Rally spec" (it really is a completely different & much better car now) it deserves an impressive new bodyshell so I've ordered a ready to use Killerbody Subaru Impreza shell for it.!
I'm sure you've tried them, but for anyone who hasn't tried the Killerbody shells, you don't know what you're missing.!!... They really are some of the nicest, most accurately detailed & durable bodyshells you can get... Their clear ones are also cheap, around £25 compared to the usual £35+ (that's with masks, light buckets & things like mirrors, wipers, spoilers & antennas).
Their pre-finished ready to use shells are simply gorgeous.!
Also reasonably priced at between £30 to £50.!
(when you consider around £15 in paint & the time & effort of doing it)
I've got a few of them, a clear Lancia Delta & Stratos & a ready to use Skyline R34 & Alfa Romeo GTAm.
I'm really looking forward to getting the new Impreza one.
They absolutely deserve to have lights fitted too.!!
Btw, L&L Models have an awesome range of 190/200mm rally, road, drift & touring shells with decent decals & 3D printed parts.!
I have quite a few of their shells too.!
Not as good as Killerbody or Tamiya but better than HPI etc.
      Right.. I'm beginning to ramble..
RC does that to me.! 😂 😂 😂
Thanks so much once again Mark.!

    Happy Easter to you buddy!
    Very cool episode Mark.
In all honesty, I never fully appreciated just how much of a complex build the Hot shot is..... I kinda want to build one now after watching this!
The rear suspension is a work of art, especially bearing in mind the age of the design.
Cool seeing the shocks go together, and the little queef that the diaphragm gave off as you pumped your piston did make me chuckle.... now what did that remind me of??! 🤔 😉 😂
The little piece of lexan sandwiched in to take out the slack worked a treat, cool idea.
The combination of black and red plastics, combined with a little aluminium looks so cool, and definitely makes it more special.
Great detailing of the driver figure to mate, especially the face.... now this is how the professionals do it.....
No Wallice and Grommit in the Mark Bryan camp! 😂 😅
Looking forward to the next episode already!
    👍 👍 👍

Happy Easter to you too, James!
Same here, I had no clue about the complexities of this build until I started it! 😅
I had to check Rob's build videos a couple of times just to check that I wasn't going crazy!
Ooh, that diaphragm - suits you Sir! 🤣
Those shocks needed a little shimming, my OCD couldn't hack the wobble!
I was going to do a Grommit version of the driver in tribute to Green Hawks but chickened out at the last minute! 😅👍
Cheers mate and take care out there! 🤗👊👌👍

Oh you get a bit OCD about your builds to mate?
I'm the same..... but there's nothing at all wrong with being a perfectionist trust me!
Of course, on the flip side of that it's a real bummer when you cock up your driver figures face! 😂
I cringe when ever I see that video!
Oh you should have done that Wallice and Grommit Green Hawks tribute figure mate, that would have been hysterical! 😂
Actually, no, don't lower yourself to our standards!
Funnily enough, Taylors not letting that one go, he's constantly ribbing me over it..... wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact he can't paint to save his life!
I've proposed a driving figure painting contest between me, him and Moo moo......
3 blank driver figures, we each paint one, and then let the viewers vote as to which one is the best?!!
Could make an interesting video? 🤔
      All the best matey. 😊 👍 👍 👍

Yes mate, we are OCD brothers! It must be in our DNA! But yeah, I think I might actually do a "comedy face" for a laugh! 😅 You know I like being a bit silly now and again!
I think you should definitely do that contest, it would make great viewing especially if you have to do the painting on camera just to add a bit more pressure - imagine the p!ss taking that would go on from the other two watching! I'd PAY to see that video!!! 🤣🤣

I was just looking at my super hotshot, because I like the sway bar set up on your hotshot, but I think the springs are at the same place as the sway bar mounts 😞. Nice vid again mark keep it going dude 💪🏻💪🏻

Hi, yes I see what you mean, the sway bar setup on this buggy is pretty cool! I think you are right though, it won't be an easy fit without doing something drastic! Many thanks for the kind words, cheers! 😎👊👍

Just building mine and I noticed that the pin that holds the rear suspension linkage together hits the rear gearbox on compression. Obvious solution seems to be to mount the black spacer on the outside rather than the inside to provide a bit more clearance.

    • @Norcopunk
      @Norcopunk Před 3 měsíci +1

Confirmed outside is correct. Step 17 shows it in the wrong orientation and step 18 shows it correctly

Love it! The shocks are just as whacky as the linkage system! Although i wouldn't want to be the driver with that shock pointed towards my head, lol!
This is an awesome build and i'm looking forward to the next part :D
Have a wonderful weekend my friend!

Hi there mate! I totally agree, whacky is the word to describe it and who the hell wants a shock through the back of their head!!! 🤣
As I keep saying though, I love the crazy design and it's a pleasure to put together!
Hope your weekend is going well too my friend! 😎👊👍

Many thanks for the kind words, buddy, I appreciate that! It is exactly why I make the videos like this because I know from many comments that some folk find them very useful. But I'm also grateful to lots of my friends who take the time to watch and comment on these builds, even though you guys are expert builders! It means a lot to me. Best wishes! 🤗🙏👊👍

    Am I missing something!?
The rear swaybar appears to be completely worthless because the (otherwise) independent suspension cannot actuate independently, as the mono-shock linkage binds it together, left with right.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před 2 měsíci

Yeah the way a swaybar works is a little counter-intuitive! But this is exactly the way they work on a full-sized car. The swaybar itself is a spring and so does increase the spring resistance when one wheel rises and the other doesn't (i.e. when cornering, hence helping to prevent roll) But when both wheels rise and fall together, there is no change in spring resistance on either wheel. It's a bit of a compromise but it does indeed work!
