Now that is just good old fashioned Yorkshire bragging Glen 🤪This is my favourite car ever, many childhood hours were spent drooling over the Kays catalogue rc pages looking at this. Superb sir!
Kays catalogue 😂. Now that’s a blast from the past 😍👊🏻
kays catalogue!! brilliant!!
oooh wwooowwww this two was my dream cars when i was 11 !!!
I had an early release Mk1, and then bought a 2nd kit in the 80's which got built to be a shelf queen. Traded the 1st for BMX parts, and sold the 2nd one many years later. Now, I wish I kept both cars. Just picked up a Mk2 assembled but never driven car with uncut body/decals. The rear arms have cracks where the screwpin goes in. That happened to my former shelf queen also. So back off the screw pins, so they don't crack the arms. Picked up 2 Re-Re kits to build and drive with my kid now, and he has a Hotshot 2 rere. Hotshot 1 for dad, Hotshot 2 for son, get it? LOL.
The Hotshot was my first hobby grade RC, I have good memories running it all those years ago. I fitted all the Supershot parts back in the day, by saving my pocket money. That took me a long time, I remember the bearings were $4 each & I needed around 24 I think?
It was a lot of bearings for one Buggy. I fitted a Twister Hurricane 15t mod motor with a steel pinion gear & a EK-700 FET ESC. Back in 2002, my mother told me to get the rest of my stuff out of the Garage, because I moved out a year before. To my surprise there it was my old Tamiya Hotshot, that I had forgotten about. I Still have it, 36 years later 👍🏻😎
Please do a running Video 🙏
Great comment I enjoyed reading that my friend 🤩👊🏻
Hoo my baby !!
It is for me the most beautiful kit that I have.
It is also my second kit that I bought when I was young after the lunch box more than 30 years ago.
It is because of you that I bought it back last year and that I will buy the lunch box next month.
So in 1 month I will have my two youth kits finally reunited.
Thank you Gleen for all your memories and your beautiful anecdote.
A +
Great comment my friend 🤩👊🏻
Yes Glen a proper example there!!. The hotshot was another really popular buggy in our little group back in the day.. Also to be fair at that time it was a genuinely high end kit for us as they were that little bit more expensive than our hoppers and hornets and the like.. Again it truly is great Glen to see one again in it’s original state.. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Darren 😊😊😊
Love that the Subaru brat has the frog 🐸 chassis and that gorgeous body.
As always, love watching the channel, another top video Glenn!
Thanks for the lovely comment Jason 😎👊🏻
Actually, it's the other way around, the Frog has the Brat chassis.
I sold a mint mk1 years ago not knowing what i had.
Now i own another one luckily.
Great video.
Fantastic that you found another my friend 😅👊🏻
The first time i saw that in late 80s , it had a le mans 480s motor, it was cool
Excellent thanks for watching 😎👊🏻
Just come back to RC after 35 years. Just built my rere Hotshot after building my first Mk1in '85. Wish I'd kept it! Fantastic vids!!
Hey thanks for watching and leaving a comment my friend 🤩👊🏻
Love it when we enthusiasts discover differences between one kit to another, always learn something new 👍🏼
Everyday is a school day for me Paul 🤓🤓🤓
Thanks for watching buddy 🤩👊🏻
Picked up a rere Hotshot about a month and I was very surprised at how smoothly it drives. Great car. Another great video Glenn. Keep ‘em coming.
Thank you 😊
Would just like to say thank you for re-igniting my interest back in this hobby. After 30+ years I’ve just bought a Tamiya Audi V8 touring car on aTT-02. I now wish I had kept all the cars I had had as a child back in the day but I’m sure I’m not the only one who watches your videos that feel the same. I’m hoping this will be the first of many builds over the coming months/years, it’s hard to choose what to build as there are so many great looking kits available. I have lots to learn after being out of the loop for so many years and the changes that have happened since but love watching your videos and gaining new knowledge that will help me out. Keep up the great work and enthusiasm as this was an incentive for me to do it all over again 👍🏻
Fantastic Jon, thanks for the lovely comment my friend and enjoy those builds 😍😍😍
One of the best looking buggies ever!👍
100% 😊😊😊
They have never looked better…to think how close I was to just throwing them out. Well done!
George.
You want them back now, huh😏😉
Nope….I enjoyed them already, His turn now.
Oh I’m so glad you got to see these finished my friend 😍😍😍
@@TAMIYALegends enjoy…be well
Loved the video Glenn. Fond memories of my hotshot back in '85 and great to see the differences as building a re-release now for my son. Vaguely remember the bumper changing for the worse and not being popular but might be wrong on that one. Don't recall anyone having gold wheels at the club back then but do remember them looking amazing on the Fox. One thing I won't miss is burning the fingers on those heatsinks, used to leave the pattern on my finger as a child, ouch! :-)
Legendary Tamiya buggy. As mentioned already in the comments, this version of the buggy only got a one month production run, in March 1985. This is denoted by the build manual that is stamped with the numbers 03/85. All other Hotshot kits from the 1980s had the manual that was stamped 04/85. Full list of differences from the Mk2/April 85 variants are :
* Nylon 3-hole bumper. (Mk2 has no holes and made from polycarbonate)
* Nylon front skid plate, that angled the bumper at a steeper angle than the Mk2 version. (Mk2 is polycarbonate and angled lower)
* Front gearbox cases without external strengthening ribs and with thinner plastic debossed recesses to hold the front bumper stay in place. (Mk2 has ribs and thicker plastic, with no recesses, therefore the bumper stay is secured exclusively through bolt and nut.
* Gearbox cases had extra internal holes.
* Threaded & bossed front bumper stay that sits in gearbox housing recesses, and properly secured to gearbox housings via a screw at each end.
* Front uprights with smaller diameter threaded holes & narrower mounting area.
* Front ball connectors with matching smaller thread to the uprights.
* Front driveshafts engraved with only one "ring" at each end (Mk2 has two rings at each end).
* Some Mk1 kits also appear to have been supplied with a thicker roof with a gloss finish.
Mk1 kits also had the floating resistors but early Mk2 kits got these too. Midway through production the Mk2 kits then got the glued-in versions. No 1980s Hotshot kit was ever supplied with the gold wheels as standard. That happened only with the Supershot.
The gearboxes used in the Hotshot got further strengthening sections in conjunction with the release of the Boomerang/Bigwig/Hotshot 2 but its not clear if Tamiya put these gearbox trees in the very late Hotshot kits too.
Great video. I have a Hotshot but wasn't sure what version I had, watching your video helped determine its a Mk1. Happy days! 😃
Oh wow that’s fantastic 🤩🤩🤩
Great video Glenn. I have an original 85 I built from NIB and I have to say it’s probably my favourite to pick up and look at. The rear suspension, the resistors and it’s aggressive stance I just love. I remember it being a big deal when it was released! Thanks again.
Fantastic that you still have it Wade 😍👊🏻
The hotshot 2 had that entry point on top of the chassis
Excellent I didn’t know that 😎👊🏻
First, love your videos. That´s so cool you have the original The HotShot. Definitely one of my favorite Tamiya off-roader together with The BigWig. Never have had any of those myself though. I just remember back in the days. Those were some of the heavyweights desired cars. :)
Excellent thanks for the great comment my friend 😊👊🏻
Love the hot shot 😍 got a super hot shot waiting to be built
Fantastic that’s the best looking one of the family 😍😍😍
Great little history of the Hotshot.
And awesome mk1 too!!!!
Will you be swapping the wheels over for your rererun??
First 4wd Tamiya, iconic piece of kit. Also I remember how heavy this car was compared to the 2wd Tamiyas at the time.
Yeah there first 4wd car 🤯 what a thing my friend 🤩👊🏻
The Hoteshot is one of the most Iconic buggies of all time, love it
Totally agree Darren 🤩👊🏻
Another awesome video! Seems like every time I watch one of your videos, I go out and buy one of the kids. I have a bunch now piling up that I have not put together. I might need to take a break from your videos in order to start building them! Yeah, that will never happen. For me, collecting them is half the fun. I think I’ll go look for a hot shot somewhere.
Lovely looking thing buddy, can't wait to see the rere running, also I didn't realise how pretty the brat is,awesome video as always Glenn😊 👍🏴
Thanks Carl, yeah I thought the Brat looked stunning on this video, it’s a little bit like myself being very photogenic 🤣🤣🤣
Good morning Glen!! GREAT ViDeo!! Have I ever told you how much I love the hotshot? 😂😂!!
No I don’t think you’ve ever mentioned it Chris 🤣👊🏻
what a beautiful bit of Kit that is right there Glenn, Four years ago when i started my Tamiya Collection Frenzy It was My Second Kit First being the Frog , and still has only ran the once on grass after the full build and painting and decals just to give it a test and is sitting pretty on the shelf of my desk along side the Frog which has had the same treatment along side the now new VQS , and Now The Mads cap which has been built and not yet fitted with elec's as thats staying NEW but to look at them everyday on my top shelf is such a great feeling and to know there Bran Spanking New is Super Cool, So watching This makes me feel all warm and happy inside probably sounds strange to some but growing up back in the day at 11 yrs old to have had a frog or Hotshot would have been like Ferris Builer on his day off to say the least he he he - Very Iconic and to me Priceless sorry for the Long babble but These Great Videos just get me going and i love this Hobby So Much its just Superb to say the least thanks so much for the efforts and great well thought out videos you create my friend - Thank you . :-))
Thanks for another lovely comment my friend 😍👊🏻
Great stuff Glen love the hotshot remember when that came out it seemed quite expensive. It’s definitely on my wish list. Thanks for the info best wishes
Thank you for watching Peter 😅👊🏻
It's understandable that some may think that the 2007/Mk3 Hotshot is more-or-less the same, part for part as the Mk2, But in actual fact Tamiya made changes to most of the parts, so building a vintage Mk1/Mk2 from a re-release kit simply isn't viable as virtually every part got a subtle design change for the re-release. The only parts that could be used are the Z (driver figure) parts, S (servo horn) parts, plastic gears and bevel gears and a few of the pressed metal parts. Every other part on the re-release is different to the 1980s Mk1 & Mk2. Even the shade of red on the red plastic parts is different. It's subtle, but it's there.
Fantastic information again Andrew 🤩👊🏻
Great car and my only complaint is we didn't see you strip it down and rebuild step by step. Appreciate that's a pain but seeing your reaction is part of the enjoyment.
Looking forward to seeing the rere run.
Thanks for the feedback my friend 😎👊🏻
Hahahaha👍👌
That was so interesting!, I'm pretty sure the Hotshot is my favourite Tamiya and thanks to you I know so much more about the differences and history.
Thanks for sharing your video mate 👍🦘🇦🇺
Thank you 😊
fantastic stuff as always Glenn, picked up a re-re hotshot just the other day, thought 5 years is long enough to pine over a car before actually buying one. Can't wait to build her up. That original one of yours is lovely tho, very nice model indeed. :)
Excellent I’m glad you’ve got one my friend 😎👊🏻
My first RC car I ever owned was a first edition hotshot !! God I'm old !!..
Haha fantastic and yeah I’m old too 😂👊🏻
@Buzz I prefer the term classic or vintage 😁 Happy RCing my friend.
Hey Glenn! My friend, personally, the Hotshot just never did it for me ?? I'm guessing it might have been cos i never actually saw one in the flesh so to speak , but it just didn't excite me if I'm honest my friend! That being said, i do now have a much greater respect for it after learning about it in your vid! It's definitely unique in terms of design and appearance, and obviously i now know it was Tamiya's first 4WD, so that fact alone makes me respect it much much more than back in the day! Ahahaha luv that last bit Glenn! Spent weeks painting a shell then finish n realise you left the protective film on!! haha!! Luv it! Thanks as always Glenn! Wes, Liverpool, UK
Haha Wes I’m glad you saw the end of the video, most won’t see that 😂👊🏻
Great video mate, fascinating to see the difference between original and re re. 👍🏻
Excellent thanks for watching and leaving a comment my friend 😊👊🏻
One of the most iconic RC cars and absolutely good looking also, IMO. The acess hatch in the chassis was introduced in the HotShot 2, mainly for easy change of X-tal but also to be able to inspect the radiobox.
That is pretty cool to have and it makes me want to get on with my Hot shot 2 looking at how cool it looks..
those gold wheels are a must :)
Thanks buddy 😊👊🏻
Best looking tamiya car one of the best definitely on the tamiya mount rush Moore.
Fantastic Jorge 😎👊🏻
Brilliant to see this just finished mine one of your other videos made me go for the hotshot I’m worried a lot of your videos will make me get a fair few more lol top man 👍🏻
Haha that’s excellent and I’m sorry 🤣👊🏻
That’s cool! Used to love RC’s not much into the restoring part since I moved to another model than restoring and keeping it on the shelf.😂. However, getting into full scale cars especially JDM is more rewarding to restore, yes it costs more, but for me restoring my 94’ FD is far more rewarding and more cooler than restoring a RC. Thanks to RC I got more into building full scare cars, but kudos to you for restoring an awesome toy! Keep up the good work!
I’m going to dig out my box of bits tomorrow. Packed since 1993. It’s either a hotshot 2 or super shot or both.
Lovely looking buggies and probably the most iconic tamiya 4wd ever released from tamiya in my opinion!🤩
God those gold wheels make it really special! Definitely need a set for your Mk1 great vid Glenn! you have a Mk1 mate how cool is that 😉👍
Thanks James 😍👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends 👍
I always liked the Hotshot, looks like a proper off-road buggy ;) Personally, I'd definitely put the original gold wheels on the Mk1 chassis, it deserves them more than the re-re does. And please get that re-re running soon! Awesome video as always dude, I really enjoyed it!!
Thanks Barry 🤩👊🏻
That is a great looking set of rigs right there bud. I love the stories of looking to the Rc Brotherhood for extra parts when needed. I am a big believer in the brotherhood, They will look after you. ;) It must be somthing for you to have these great rigs in your collection. THanks for sharing the story
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment my friend 😎👊🏻
Loved the vid love the hotshot
Thanks Steve 😊👊🏻
one of the best lookin buggies IMO.
The hotshot really is a great looking rc great job mate 👍👍👍
Thanks Craig 😊👊🏻
Nerd juices 😂😂. Yeah that’s about right. Awesome to learn about the Mk1!! Cool video.
Haha 😂
We all have it 🤣👊🏻
Good crack as always dude 👍
Always loved the classic stance of a Hotshot.
Saying nowt about protective film.........
Haha excellent 😂👊🏻
Love the hotshot, I'm very lucky to have a three hole. The front arms are a bit different on the early ones, one of the triangular cutouts became a hole. I think that happened for the supershot shocks. The front dogbones have 1 line etched on the mk 1 and mk2 have 2 scores. It's very odd I can't work out why but it looks like you have the proper ones.
I daren't run mine now, the parts are so rare and I'd hate to break it.
Great video again👍
Yeah I think the drive shafts were sent to me too 🤔
I have the re re hotshot and love it even though front shock is not great.Another classic tamiya and hope to see you running it.
Thanks Alastair 😎👊🏻
I think it's one of the best looking rc buggies there is, I'd love to have one with the durability and performance of a modern day buggy.
Yeah it’s definitely a looker Tony 😍👊🏻
Brilliant video as always Buddy, very informative I also get what ya mean about the buzz of putting together a mk1😁,must admit think once I've been able to afford a hornet I will definitely save up for a hotshot but will stick some gold wheels on her as I think it looks awesome with those on👍👍
Excellent thanks for watching and commenting my friend 😎👊🏻
My friend Roger has two of theses hotshots one mint and one run but still good condition won't sell them grrrrr have a great weekend Glenn and what a great icon rc 😎👌👊Tamiya made some of the best 4WD buggies in that era the golden age of rc definitely .
They certainly did my friend 🤩
Hope you’re having a fantastic weekend 👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends Thank you Glenn 😎👊
Great job. It is kind of a unicorn. As many cars as I have in my collection, I don’t have a mk1.
Might have to email Kenny. I know he has a bunch of original kits.
Oh now that would be a great addition to your already amazing collection my friend 😍👊🏻
Great content as always Glenn. 🤓🤓
Thanks Will 😊👊🏻
Great build Glen.
Cheers, Gauranga!
Thanks Matt 😎👊🏻
Interesting video about my favorite Tamiya car…did not know there were two different vintage models..Turns out, my old HotShot is a MKI…cool! I recently tried restoring it, but I turned it into a resto-mod instead due to the very bad shape it was in…badly damaged from bashing back in the day. Your comment on the three hole bumper is what made me realize it was a MKI. I came across some differences to the new parts that might also be original to the MKI…the four wheel drive shaft has “hex” brass ends…not the slotted cylinder ends..also, the axles are three parts, main silver shaft with ball joint ends. I’m my CZcams video, you can see I had problems with some of the original parts…especially the 4WD shaft.
Fantastic thanks for sharing this with us my friend 🤩👊🏻
Definitely Tamiya’s best car👍
The hatch in the chassis was from the Hotshot 2 I believe, it was so you could change crystals slightly easier then dropping the bottom off.
Excellent information John 😎👊🏻
yep, great for switching crystals or these days to bind the reciever.
Or, a great place for your ESC heatsink.
the intro music hahahaha luv it
Excellent thanks for watching 😎👊🏻
You are one early riser. Approaching my retire age and glad to see Tamiya n Kyosho doing the re re. Thbue problem is do I have enough time to built them before my eye sight and dexterity are not good enough to built them. Than they could got up in an estate sells for cheap as chips.😏
Yeah I understand where you’re coming from James, I’m now struggling with the same things 😤
Enjoyed 👊🏻👍🏻
Great video for sure. I like the Hotshots look its amazing but I don't really see a reason for me to own it. Got a cheap Phasma II to kick around for now but maybe just maybe one day ill cave. Love yours though its cool if I was George I would be thinking its in good hands. He drove that car right lol
I was born in 1985 that's amazing I'm on the mach 2 level my friend Kevin helped me build this car dont download the manual with the re release decals and the original are different top wing on the gladden situation omg donovan gladden I'm so happy 🤓🇦🇺🇺🇸🇬🇧 I'm jealous he's got the gold wheels the hotshot is my favorite tamiya Pope hat I have a original
I got marry in 85, so one can never get Tamiya out of the system.
Excellent thanks for watching and leaving a comment my friend 🤩👊🏻
I’ve still got my MK 1, it was awesome but the MK2 seemed better engineered and more durable. A rough track would beat the hell out of mine but my mates MK2 would last much better.
Great video Glenn
I also think the metal piece you're talking about was also used sort of like a heat sink for the electronics that have heat come out of the aluminum.
Yep, left the protective film on my lancia delta tt02. Still gives me nightmares now. 😱 I'd spent days on it and it was perfect, or so I thought. 😂
Haha I think there’s a lot of us who’s been there 🤣👊🏻
Glen, you know what. I think the MK1 Hotshot is a better looker than the Avante. Can you imagine how it would look if it had metal shocks ,turnbuckles etc from the box.
Yeah we you see a fully loaded custom Hotshot, they do look pretty badass Gary 😍👊🏻
The Mk1 Hotshot also had shock springs made from mild steel, I've read - they switched to spring steel on the Mk2s. If you sit a Mk1 next to a Mk2 with similar shock builds and settings, the Mk2 will tend to sit a little higher
The Hotshot has always been a weird one for me. Always admired it, and even more so recently appreciating it's place in RC history and the "Tamiya Timeline" but I've never owned one. The suspension design is part of the iconic look but also for me why I was put off by it. Surely it can't handle as well as a conventional buggy? Maybe it is worth me trying to get a Hotshot II or Super Hotshot or something in time. Which is the best variant? It has to be said though the aluminium roof, the cage and cabin, the body lamps, the rear spoiler location, the motor position, the overall design is just so iconic and cool. Thank you again for another great video.
Thank you for watching Mark 🤩👊🏻
My first Tamiya was a Hot Shot, it was a nightmare for me as it was so fragile and slow. It got me very confident on the tools and soon I was fixing my friends cars as well as the hot shot, 2 car was a hornet never broke down.
That’s a great point about the tools and the actual engineering these kits brought to us 😍😍😍
I knew my decision to abstain from the vote would result in a banger either way. Definitely some interesting stuff, and wanting to get my hands on a Hot Shot, informative. I'd love to know what identifiable differences there are on The Hornet, as I'm having a difficult time discerning whether mine is an original with a re-re body, or just a complete re-re.
Fantastic thanks for the great comment my friend 🤩👊🏻
That is a beauty
Nice show you should do more comparisons with other rere
Thanks for the feedback Justin 😎👊🏻
I keep telling myself I don't need a Hotshot then I watch a Hotshot video...😏
Haha 😂😂😂
Well thank you for watching my friend 👊🏻
Nice
I think they mean it is esthetics it just looks awesome period… it’s in my Mount Rushmore of good looking RC dune buggies.
Fixin to build one...hope it's like the Fox was
The hotshot is my favorite Tamiya buggy. Great video showcasing this legend ! Quick question Glen - when you build your cars in particular your display ones, do you leave the electrics out ( except for the motor ) or do your finish with servo/esc ? Cheers.
Thanks Bill 👊🏻
No I’ve gotta be honest I kinda think it’s pointless to have full electrics fitted tbh 😩🤷🏼♂️
Glenn just seems like a mate you wish you had.
Let’s see it run
Excellent informative video again👍 is there a difference between the colour of the original gold wheels and the re-release? I've never seen them side by side🤷♂️ I've never done the spraying over the protection film but I did buy a boomerang and the previous owner had done it🤦♂️ so I peeled it off and "hay presto" I instantly had a unpainted original body👏
Haha 😂
Well the wheels I have don’t look as Gold as the new ones, but I’m not sure if that just happened over the years tbh 🤔🤷🏼♂️
Looks awesome mate!! Unrelated question, I have an alpine a110 on the m06 chassis. Do you happen to know what the part numbers are for the blue Tamiya anodized turnbuckles for that chassis? I would appreciate it. Thank you mate.
BUMPER 🎉
Man I wish I still had my hot shot..
I contacted a company back in the 80's that made up some red anodized lower arms for me, but I can't remember what company it was unfortunately
I got one of those too,,,, But I bash the crap out of it........ which reminds me, i need some dogbones for it.
Sorry i haven't been posting lately, especially on FB.... I finally has my SI Joint Fused... and i can walk again.
Keep lift that car up and flexing that super rare bumper 🤯
Not sure if anyone does a better job of restoring these originals than you do? you have the necessary contacts to access the parts and you are likeable enough for people to want to help you never get bored of watching your channel
I hate those gold wheels 😂😂😂
I think the original was with mechanical speed controler and the 2 nubbies behind the wing were the cases for the resistors?
Hmmm I’ve got 2 super hotshots but want to try out the regular hotshot suspension. Get a whole new hotshot ? 🤷♂️
Is the rere cage and chassis off the hotshot 2?
Front sway bar bracket is thinner on the original too
Hi Glenn wow good looking hotshot , just run with 540 silver can gonna out last you & save your gear . sell my your brat driver ?
Yeah that’s what I’ll do 😅👊🏻
Glen, regarding broken chassis/plastic parts, if you have some original but broken parts that are difficult to replace sometimes restoration is possible, even if only for shelf queen's,
Im not going to divulge my secrets but if you wanted to direct message me I may be able to help 👍
Thank you I’ll be in touch if I have something like this again my friend 😎👊🏻
Do you know if there is any prospects of tamiya relaunching the Stryker buggy as it was my first ever kit cheers
Well we never know what they’ll do next, so I guess we just have to hope 😇🤞🏻🤞🏻
Mach 1🤷♂️
I think its Glens Yorkshire accent. He is saying mark 1 (mk1)
Hi Glen, any idea on the value these MK1 hotshots would go for ? I bought one with 2 years savings when I was a kid, it was definately an original 3 hole as it was the second one beatties in our area ever received and I was incredibly excited to buy and build it ! we painted it blue not red, and believe it's still in my parents house somewhere.
Yeah it all depends on the condition my friend, a decent car would probably do around £300+ but a mint one with box and manual would be £5/600
@@TAMIYALegends thanks Glenn, keep going with the great content, your videos are refreshingly genuine and your love of the hobby is palpable
Had original hotshot back in the day.Wasn’t there a super shot also? I think I added two front suspension springs, instead of the single horizontal spring,to turn it into a Supershot. Is this actually a thing or am I remembering it all wrong?🤔
I have to say, when I bought my HotShot in 85 it had white wheels. I lived in the UK and that was what I got, white wheels. I do keep hearing folks talking about the original and how it has to have Gold wheels. Anyone know what gives? I even now have an original Hotshot as I wanted one for the collection the same as I had when I was a kid and it also have white wheels. My Super Shot and my HS2 both have gold wheels. I have always known it to be that way. Anyone know what gives with both my 85 Hotshots having white wheels?
