I personally put this in my top 3 PS2 games. It was one of my most memorable games growing up; played it as a kid, a teen, an adult. It never diminished in quality for me. I need to play it again after watching this. I wish this game got more attention or at least there were other games in this style of gameplay.
Same! I think this very well might be my most played game ever, solely based on the fact that I play it just about every year for at least one run through. It’s so fucking good. If you are going to give it another spin, I really can’t recommend Clovis’s mod enough. The base game is great, but especially after a while it can get a little too easy. It’s free and the emulators/isos of the game are super easy to find.
Arsenal bug and larva moth (or the other one that takes one turn to turn into the great moth) are awesome in the redux version. This is my favourite Yugioh game of all time
I played this one as a kid. Finally came back as a grown ass adult to kick it's ass in a few days not long ago. Thank god for some jank-ass Pumpking strats. Also, this channel is criminally undersubbed. Keep it up!
Yo thank you homie! Yeah, I’m not totally sure how my dumb 7 year old ass understood all the mechanics, but it certainly seems easier with a fully formed brain. Pumpkin decks are so much fun simply because I love seeing an originally 1200 atk monster have 5000 and take out a Blue Eyes
So much strange nostalgia about this game, I know what you mean about it having a soul. It kinda makes you play by its rules passively. It’s kinda backwards but does make you feel like you’re playing at your buddies house as a kid
It really does! Weird and convoluted as the rules might be, I always find myself just slipping right back in and it clicking exactly how it did 20 years ago. It’s very cozy.
You should give it a shot! I've heard a lot of people say it's learning curve and mechanics are very janky and hard to learn, but if my stupid ass can do it at 6, I have faith that you can too. Find an emulator and a rip of the game and let me know what you think.

I still have my PS2 disk of this somewhere in a random cardboard box. This game was so goofy and surprisingly good, but my 12 year old ass just cheated in a bunch of mirror walls and brute forced everything :^)
Aye I totally forgot about mirror wall, holy shit that card would completely break the games AI. I also loved Green Kappa and Swordsman Of A Foreign Land, but yeah dude the cheats were fun as hell

Never managed to unlock a Blue Eyes card, hated the slot machine card aspect, BUT it was my go-to game. The way fusion works, the way the field card works, having your own leader monster, the summoning system. And that I got to a point where I could put Pumpking and whatever card made everything zombies and then I would just sit everything at the back and go up to insane atk points and beat anything. Best childhood game ever.
I remember Blue Eyes being a pain to unlock with something like having to get 3 swordstalkers in the slots or something, but I honestly can’t remember if I had one or not. I also really liked how the fusions worked, as inconsistent as they were. For 2001, this shit was bangin
It's like...nostalgia plus something else. Is there a term for a thing that kind of embodies a really specific time, and that you couldn't imagine existing in any other time? I play or look at gameplay of games like this and you just get this SENSE of the year it came out. And it isn't something I feel like you could say about PS2 games in general, at least not to the same extent. Certain things just have more of that weird quality than others.
Oh for sure, Duelist of the Roses certainly was a product of it's time, but you nailed it by saying that it's not just every PS2 game. I feel like I could play any racing game, most FPSs, and even a lot of platformers that came out on the PS2 and they feel like they could have been on any console. DotR feels too new of a concept for PS1, but too old and niche to have been on the PS3 or 360. It's truly a weird game, but I am very glad that I got/get to play it.

DOTR is my favorite way to play. Ive played yugioh since LOB, I love the card game, but I'd leave it behind in a flash if DOTR had a remaster with netplay
It's truly a shame that it's been ignored since it's birth, because I do think it has some good bones for some solid gameplay mechanics. I think especially compared to what the TCG has become today, it would basically just be a completely separate game wearing Yu-Gi-Oh skins, which I'm completely fine with!
