- Corporate VP-turned writer, Dana Gioia sparked heated national debate with his Atlantic essay, and later his book, titled Can Poetry Matter? Essays on Poetry and American Culture. His third volume of poetry, Interrogations at Noon, and his libretto, Nosferatu, come out later this year. In this presentation, Dana Gioia talks about the state of poetry in American culture and reads from his and other poets' works. Series: "Voices" [7/2001] [Humanities] [Show ID: 5855]
Always a joy, Dana. Thanks for your poetry and your good nature. Nick Campbell
I respect Gioia's sober sense in poetry, particularly in his essays, yet to call Helen Vendler towards the end of this lecture a "God-given writer who bores the reader" amounts to a rash accusation. Vendler, in my eyes, is almost unparalleled in her meticulous attention to the structure, form and sound in poetry. Her books of criticism appeal to both professionals and common readers.

Sententious maybe, but I'm unconvinced on imbecilic. Far from it, in fact. :) Have a good one!
