    Roman Armor Through the Ages
The armor of ancient Roman soldiers evolved significantly over the empire's long history, adapting to changing warfare needs and technological advancements. Here's a breakdown of key elements:
    Lorica Segmentata
Iconic plate armor used during the Imperial period (1st-3rd centuries AD)
Made of iron strips fastened with leather straps
Offered excellent protection while maintaining flexibility
    Lorica Hamata
Chain mail armor, used from the 3rd century BC to the fall of the empire
    Consisted of interlocking metal rings
Lighter than plate armor but still effective against slashing attacks
    Lorica Squamata
Scale armor made of small metal plates sewn onto a fabric backing
Used throughout Roman history, especially by officers and cavalry
    Helmets
Evolved from simple bowl shapes to more complex designs
Notable types include the Montefortino, Imperial Gallic, and Imperial Italic helmets
Often featured cheek guards and neck protection
    Shields
Early rectangular scutum, large and curved for maximum protection
Later oval shields, lighter and more maneuverable
Made of wood, covered with leather, and reinforced with metal
    Greaves
Metal leg protectors, typically worn on the leading leg
More common in earlier periods, less used in later imperial armies
    Arm Protection
Manica: segmented arm guard used by some troops, especially gladiators
    Materials and Construction
Primarily iron and bronze for metal components
    Leather for straps and fittings
Skilled craftsmen (fabri) responsible for production and maintenance
    Adaptations and Regional Variations
Armor designs influenced by encountered enemies (e.g., Parthian horse archers)
Variations based on troop type (legionaries vs. auxiliaries)
    Symbolic and Practical Aspects
Armor designs often incorporated decorative elements
Some pieces served as status symbols for officers
This armor, combined with disciplined tactics and engineering skills, played a crucial role in Rome's military dominance for centuries.
On this video we will see that unfortunately the costume department of this set is not only quite bad but it's in fact very disappointing. With the exact same budget much more could have been achieved, with the correct historical advisor.

Honestly this was the first time I saw something about the Ministry of Christ where I felt like they didn't just tell us names and places, but gave us characterizations of the actual Chosen. Watching them come to life (not focused on Jesus, just on his followers) made me realize I'd never put a real human connection to the words. I could see the scenes I can probably recite a few. But at the end of it, I never considered them as people with interconnected relationships. This was the win for me.

    • @leirawhitehart1236
      @leirawhitehart1236 Před 14 dny +10

Same, I've always struggled with reading the Bible, because it doesn't give any depth or insight into any of the characters besides Jesus, and don't get me wrong, of course Jesus is the most important person in the Bible, heck, the most important person who's ever lived, even, but given that, it's always made it difficult to understand what was happening at any given time within a scene. It made it very hard to picture, and connect with the people within it, such as the deciples, and so this show?
I think it's a tremendous help to people like me who struggle with reading the Bible because they want to connect to the characters within it, and recognize them as real people who actually lived and had thoughts and feelings and loved ones, people they cared about.
Now, of course, a lot of the characterization of the Chosen is mostly guesswork, as we can probably never get a completely accurate perspective on who the Deciples were, given they wrote about Jesus, not themselves or each other, but even so, even if they're ultimately wrong, it doesn't matter, because at least they're a face to see and a heart to connect to now.
I love watching the Deciples interact with one another, as they have such great chemistry on set, and if you watch the bloopers, they also have great chemistry off set too. ^^
They really portray the Deciples as just a bunch of normal average guys, who all had unique talents and perspectives that hold great value to Jesus's ministry in one way or another.
Overall, I think he's totally underselling the show and how unique and fresh it feels among Christian media.
Criticize the costumes all you like, as I think that's fair, but when it comes to the show itself, I think it's beautiful, deep, and full of so much heart and wisdom.
When Jonathan Roomie is up there, I feel almost like I'm seeing Jesus himself on screen, and i think that means he's done his job as an actor well.
I could go on about this show and how good it is, but I should probably stop here. 😅

    • @audreyandlinCompany
      @audreyandlinCompany Před 14 dny +5

@@leirawhitehart1236 I agree with both of you. The Gospel isn't about the Disciples. It isn't supposed to be. But that can make it very dry reading. It's helpful to see the Disciples as real people who had separate lives and one day... how does the song go? "I was one way when you found me,
I was not the one you see
And the only thing that happened
Was this stranger in between..." 😉

    • @leirawhitehart1236
      @leirawhitehart1236 Před 13 dny +2

@audreyandlinCompany indeed, as while it makes sense that the Bible would really only be about Jesus and who he was rather than anyone else, the fact that it's _only_ about him, well, you said it best, the dry taste is hard to parch sometimes. 😅
Which is why I'm glad this series decided to focus on the Deciples instead, because not only does it make them feel more human and tangible to grasp, it also makes them feel more relatable, and it makes you feel at least a little better about yourself (... or worse in some cases) that if even they, who knew Jesus, and were as close as they could be with him at the time, if even _they_ didn't fully understand him, then it's ok, you have time for mistakes and misunderstandings yourself. It's ok to make these mistakes over and over again, because even when the Deciples made such mistakes, Jesus never gave up on them, and he _never_ stopped loving them. Each and every time they misunderstood his teachings, or even explicitly went against his teachings, he was right there to send them on the right path eventually, and was able to help them through their problems in a way that could also apply to us here living today.
The Deciples serve as living examples for different kinds of people who may have different kinds of misunderstandings about who Jesus is, and what they want him to be. The way they think and feel about Jesus and the way they misunderstand his words, repeatedly even, they're ways that we can often do that also. So to see Jesus try and untangle all the misconceptions that even his followers may have, in real time, all these questions that you yourself may have had when reading the Bible, it's incredibly helpful for visualizing the meaning behind what Jesus is saying, and what he's truly trying to get at here. And to see real tangible examples for why he teaches what he does, and why, is also incredibly helpful.
Like for instance, in the most recent season that just came out (spoilers), when Jesus and the Deciples are on the road to Bethany to visit his friend Lazarus, they get stopped by some Roman soldiers who basically force them to carry their stuff (which I didn't know that apparently they could do that at any time they wanted during that time), and the Deciples want to refuse, after all, they have some place to go, and the guards were being condescending to them. However, Jesus tells them to oblige. And so they do, and the soldiers make fun of them the whole way to the mile marker, and it's humiliating for them, but they're willing to do it, because Jesus told them to. They don't understand why yet, but they've come to understand that if he's ordering them to do this, he must have a reason. And sure enough, when Jesus keeps walking when he's told he can stop and he offers to help them through the rest of the way there when he doesn't have to anymore, the guards suddenly feel a bit bad about how they treated them, after a display of such kindness and humility in the face of mockery and unfairness. The situation they were put in, was indeed unfair and demeaning, but Jesus taught them in real time how to handle it with grace.
And as far as I know, this wasn't even in the Bible, and yet, it does _such_ a good job of illustrating the kind of person Jesus was, and what he wanted from his followers. What turning the other cheek really means, and how to set aside your pride for the purpose of something greater in the distance.
And that is also part of the value of this show, is it's very careful about what it adds to their story (because not everything that happened to them or everyone they ever met is in the Bible, so of course there's some room for speculation), and is diligent to make sure that whatever happens to them, whatever Jesus says or does that isn't in the Bible, that it aligns with who he is, and doesn't compromise on that. Because it is _so_ important for people to know and understand Jesus, and this may be helpful for those like me who may be struggling to do it simply through the Bible itself.
Man, sorry again for going on another rant, but like I said before, I could talk about this all day. 😅

1 thing irks me a bit about Passion movie was their Mary Magdaline. She was portrayed as the adulterer who was almost got stoned & the Jesus saved her.
Mary Magdaline wasn't an adulterer or a prostitute. She was saved by Jesus from evil spirits. The notion of Mary of Magdala as an adulterer or aprostitute came from a misconception by Pope Gregory I in the 4th century. He conflated her with Mary of Bethany (Lazarus' sister) & the sinful woman who washed Jesus' feet. Then that misconception became somewhat popular & turned Mary of Magdala into a former prostitute or a repented sexually defiant woman. The movie adapted her character into the adulterous woman.

I'm thinking of that the creators of add were trying to argue the possibility of conditional prophecy, that the prediction could have been fulfilled if the statue had made it into the temple proper. Yet if you read the material about Philo's visit to Rome to stop this, I'm pretty sure that the statue never made it so much as into Judea but I would have to look into that or have somebody who is more knowledgeable than I am let me know.

Best not to judge/comment on biblical compliance ( even though you allow for creative filler) unless you have viewed all episodes of all seasons thus far. You open yourself to error and pushback if you rush to judgment. The scene you reference does NOT depict his final arrest in the Garden after the Passover meal with his apostles/followers. It is a foreshadowing, one that goes a lot better for him than the next. Big clues include the absence of *heightened* Sanhedrinic opposition to Jesus, as well as the absence of betrayal by one of his own. Both elements thicken the plot considerably and bring us to The Arrest.

In this show, the writers have inserted quite a few speculative scenes that are almost entirely made up, about things that might have happened, but were not recorded in the Bible. in this scene, Jesus is being detained and brought to a local Roman official for questioning, but it is at an early point in his ministry years, not at the point in the gospels where he was arrested for crucifixion.

Hi Metatron! i'm so excited you are covering this, I've been hoping you would. Please allow me to situate you to the story. There will be 7 seasons (8 episodes per season) of the tv series The Chosen. They have just finished filming season 5 which will be Holy Week. Season 6 (in 2026) all 8 episodes will cover only the passion. i assume it will focus on the back stories of all those associated with Jesus more than the crucifixion. The 8 episodes of season 7 (2027) will be the resurrection and beginning of Acts. The series claims to be first and foremost historical fiction drama and encourages viewers to read the gospels. When they do actually reference a Bible story they work very hard at being true to THE SPIRIT and accurate to the text from a Protestant viewpoint. Before production, the scripts are reviewed by a Messianic Rabbi, a Catholic Bishop, and an evangelical seminary professor of history.

I love the Chosen. I've followed the show since season 1 in 2019. They had whole roundtable discussions with the director and the 3 biblical consultants. All 3 contributing to a different part of their portrayal of the events of the show. A Catholic Priest, a Rabbi, and an evengellical. I'd like to give a little context to what I've come to understand what their goal with their show is.
It's not a purely verse-by-verse adaptation, that's been done very well and not so well many times. The Chosen is a crowdfunded experiment in hypothesizing the real people behind the text of the gospels based on both the text itself and its historical and cultural contexts and presenting that in an entertaining drama that uses the events that are actually written as anchor points for the most dramatic and spiritual climaxes of the show.
They are aware and have said in the roundtable that the new dramatic parts probably didn't happen, but it could've been somewhere in the ballpark. And at the same time have admitted mistakes they've made.
Now, despite all I've said. There is one historical weakness that I've always seen in the show just by knowledge from your channel. Rome. From the leather armor and lack of shields most of the time plus a few other things especially in the earlier seasons. I think the roots of this problem of them showing the hollywoodized Romans instead of the historically known Romans is that the consultants are extremely focused on the classical era Jewish cultural side, thats what they talk about a lot in the roundtable. The traditions, the factions, the scriptures. But didn't go that far into the actual Roman side other than the new testament and modern portrayals that have influenced the writer's vision.
I do think they got a little better with the Roman's starting in season 3. Still some problems, but less than the first two. I am curious to hear Metatron's take on both the system of Roman taxation in Judea and my favorite antagonist of the show, Praetor Quintus.
I highly recommend the show, especially after doing what the opening text of episode one says which is to 'read the book before watching'. And then watching the "Biblical Roundtables".

I'm curious to know more about the taxation aspect as well. I follow a great history blog, "A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry" where the author focuses on Roman-era and medieval Europe. The author recently wrapped up a series on the Roman Republic, and described the "publicans" as essentially independent contractors. They would form companies and pool their own assets to bid on taxation rights in their particular province. What I've never seen explained is how a non-Roman like Matthew would get on board with something like this.

I’m so glad someone finally brought up the whole point of being a cohort! I’ve had a problem with this translation forever!

Thanks for the video, Metatron. Always interesting for your inputs and knowledge.
I was hoping for your rant on the leather bracers, and you did not disappoint. When I watching the Chosen with my parents, and saw the romans with the leather bracers, my first thought was Metatron wouldn't be happy with this.
I would be happy to see more of this for the Chosen, or even other series and movies, like "The Bible" Serie(2013, with Keith David as the Narrator(US version)), "The Passion of the Christ" movie(2004), "The Ten Commandments" movie(1956, with Charlton Heston as Moses), "The Greatest Story Ever Told" movie(1965), and more.
Anyways, thank you for the video. Have a good day and one. The same to everyone. God bless you all.

I saw one glaring inaccuracy. It showed a Samaritan Torah written in the post-exilic Hebrew alphabet that many would recognize. However, the Samaritan version uses a different alphabet, what most would consider Phoenician writing.

This was a good video. I thought you would be more critical, but you were very analytical and fair in your review.

10:51 THANK YOU METATRON!!!! This is so cool to hear about the Belt of Truth. I've been hearing sermons on the Armor of God for 20 years and never do I remember hearing about the importance of the belt within Roman culture.

I am new to the channel. I noticed in other videos you have shelves with small figures on them in the background. I am going to assume they are for some type of gaming. My dad used to have a sand table and would "play" wars with his friends with (I think) 12 sided dice. He had thousands of tiny figures, all hand painted, from the Romans to Civil War and WWI/WWII soldiers and their enemies to cowboys and Indians. He would build little sets, e.g. western towns with not just the town but the outskirts with little cactus, trees, bushes, etc. It was so detailed and realistic that a Colorado Springs newspaper did a story on it. Of course us kids were not allowed to touch it! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I'd like to see a simillar analysys on Passion of the Christ, and one of the big reasons is I believe romans don't have any bracelets there ;)
also the cutting of the ear by Peter is in the very beginning of the movie (as well as Judas kiss)
