I've got some custom made shirts for sale here! thebackyardscient.ist click store on top.
Theres a limited supply of the button up because I had to buy them first, get them while there hot!
Sometimes I remember to post to instagram :O , you can find me here instagram.com/backyardscientistofficial/
Use a flammable gas and some oxygen in your balloons so they float and light on fire.
you should try to focus it
TheBackyardScientist yes hi hello, we want more rocket knife 🗡
400 watt laser
Can you try to focus all the eight lizers in a point of the twisted lins
I think it will be powerful gun
Long time I'm thinking of it but I did not found a free time to do it
Sorry for the weak English 😁
Awesome build! Using an actual gun stock makes it a lot sturdier and cooler looking than my build on an airsoft gun...lol. Be careful with all that power now...like I've said there really isn't a good reason to own that. It took years for the scar on my hand to go away after grazing the beam of my 40W gun (with a lens). Your gun was missing one major part though... the moth.
also...when you scoped that LED driver did you do it while it was driving a LED/laser diode? I never trust LED drivers for laser diodes, and typically use simple linear drivers instead. Maybe that's what popped one of those diodes.
Hi Sir
would like to see Kev's with a lens, Styro.. lets see some close range burn action!
The moth is always necessary
styropyro it's a good thing he didn't add a moth as everyone know if add a moth to a laser it's gonna multiply the power of the laser by 10 times
Ahh, I can't be the only one in the neighborhood without one of these.
Trade ya for the vortex cannon ;)
I want one! guess I know what my first paycheck is going towards
vortex laser cannon?
TheBackyardScientist I calll auction I put in 100$
I would get arrested if I got one
I love how he could see the light of the phone from a mile away and they didn't think twice about it, but the laser shining a mile away was mindblowing. 8:13 7:52
"What if we tried more power?"
Styropyro would kill him
This is basically "what if i made everything more dangerous
Now that’s a lot of damage
@Galvin Fox there is a limit to how much energy there is that you can pump through that laser
It would remove the very energy making your own electrons stick together entirely
First need bigger heat-sink. maybe a fan too
300 confirmed kills. XD
Chase Searle he said the Navy seal copypasta
Halo MP announcer: Unfriggenbelievable
All that damage can be repaired with the power of flex tape
I want to see a balloon repaired with flex tape.
@@userPrehistoricman No you don't. Bought some flex tape, it's garbage. Does not perform as advertised.
Thanks Sherlock
@@userPrehistoricman You know what, I should make the video just to show how pathetic it is. I did use it for a couple of things, but all the stuff they claim it can do in the infomercial is bullshit. Water?! HA! Don't even think about it.
@@MarcGyverIt I don't think I can even buy it where I am. But I will continue to not think about it.
Backyard Scientists: *is being careful shoot lasers and storms help*
Styropyro: *shoots laser into sky and downs plane* wOw ThAtS aMaZiNg
xD
The military: we use guns
Backyardscientist : I use frickin lasers
YES xD
Yes he uses a frickin laser, are you five?
*Did you mean: Cody's Lab?* (suicides by garage door opener)
Andrew Nguyen true tho
Julian Curmi how would you 'suicide' with a garage door? Also it's commit suicide not just suicide when referring to a verb.
Reminds me of Scream
I mean... Yeah I'm going with the wix site here, but BYS is pretty cool too
Andrew Nguyen DEMONITIZED for promoting dangerous feets...
Definitely going to require a larger heatsink. As long as the surface targeted is dark in color, it works very well. If you aim at very light colors or white, it has little or no effect. Cool video!
I bet if he ran heat pipes from the metal frame he built for the top to the mounting surface the heat sink uses it would do a swell job at dissipating heat
just use even more power and use an infrared laser. this one will burn everything! though you should add one colored laser diode, because it would be bad not to see the laser beam.
electronicsNmore new weapon for police?
(Joke)
SATBTKN!!! Bet almost no one will ever figure THAT one out haha!!!
1969: IN THE FUTURE WE’LL HAVE FLYING CARS!

It’s to shoot down the flying cars later on
I need a Plasma Rifle in a 40 Watt range...
nah you need a lazer minigun
I got that reference

@@obsidiandeluxe4474 ...The Uzi 9 millimeter.
Rip Ruger 10/22, your sacrifice was well appreciated.
I can rebuild it! actually i already did ;) I needed a new barrel, so I bought a bull barrel which wouldnt fit in the stock stock (heh) so I needed to get a new one :P or at least thats how I rationalized upgrading it haha.
Also means more ergonomics instead of that old school stock, so you're doing good.
Those old hardwood sticks are a dime a dozen, I have ten of them sitting in my shop I swear, I need to do something with them.
The real question is does it do 9 damage when you get a headshot
Bradley Campbell LOL
Fortnite logic lol
No it was nerfed to 6
I think it would do more of 80 damage out of an overall 100 within just a second so anyone who goes to war with him better hope they are good at laser tag :3
@@n0va411 i thought this was a joke about the op halo 1 pistol (in the Halo ce engine it does nine damage) until i saw your comment.
Reminds me of when the Terminator was selecting his guns, lol.
"In the 40 watt range"
"Just what you see here pal"
When I was growing up all we had was Bill Nye the Science Guy, so lacking. Backyard Scientists mind blowing fun. I'm highly intrigued and entertained. Also, shared the kinetic sand casting with my silversmith instructor, you guys have silimar wave lengths, glad I missed the mini propane torch fire. Keep your toes on point and keep the videos rollin!
2:43 you can see the happy smiling dog, then its like nooo. what did i dooo.
When I was watching it afterwards it broke my heart, she got so upset thought she was in trouble :'(
Notice me
I literally searched up your channel today, and you haven't posted for 1 month. I lost hope, but you prevailed.
Imagine using mirrors to merge all of the beams into one single beam...
Do you even laser, bro?
mirrors reflect
you need lens
you can get optical amplification from mirror though
if it were concave, sure
8:27 "This is really cool, you can see the memes all the way to heaven."
Jonathan Lui beams* kevin*
The beams all the way to Kevin
You should have a focus dial to adjust where they converge.
...Fresnell lens? 🤔💭
No, I mean just to point them to a converging point at different distances. All you would need is a pivot controlled by a dial to pivot the lasers toward or away from one another and therefore varying the distance of the point at which they converge.
In fact, I cannot believe no one has done this yet...
Needs a proper optical collimator.
The real way to combine them into one beam would be using a 'Knife edge array'. You cant use lenses to focus multiple beams into a single collimated beam. Read this for more info laserpointerforums.com/f51/reference-guide-how-combine-lasers-77449.html
40W? Kinda weak man.... Let me know when you get to 200W!😁
When the laser gun has more watts then some laptop power supplies ;-;
and use infrared lasers!
How about 1 terawatt?
Gradually Omelet judging from 40 watts I'm going to assume that would go straight through you
1 terawatt laser blaster... that sounds like a pinky & brain episode where they want to melt the moon :D
This channel has become "The Backyard Arsenal" by now.
6:16
This is drone abuse
I thought the title said "40-Watt Lazer Tag Shooting", and I just thought, wow, that's a bit overpowered! I thought the point of Lazer Tag was to have a game like that where you _didn't_ have a huge risk of injury!
Micah Philson "tag , you're dead'
Micah Philson me too!
Aw man, he changed the title!
I had to change it because youtube was only showing ads for gun stuff so I knew my video was on the naughty list haha.
Micah Philson tag your on fire and your flesh is melting
You should get a lens to focus the lasers into one beam
“I got a pile of smokeless powders over there,”
*still smokes*
It smokes less than it's alternative, black powder.
6:28
The drone screamed in pain after getting engulfed in flames xD
How about if u focused the laser beams with a lens
This I gotta see
It would end up with a specific focus point a set distance from the laser, unless he uses prisms but I'm not sure how that would be set up
Asphodel Frost I would imagine it would focus and amplify
Daniel Harrell focus. Yeah. And then disperse after the focal point the lines are already parallel. If they weren't but in a specific way. Yeah you can get parallel lines.
It wouldn't amplify it. It could make it bigger. Yes. But it can't give it more energy. If it gets bigger it actually gets weaker.
Collimating
Good doggo was nervous about his humans behaviour.
Great vid as always, Hannibal weapon and vehicle designs (especially the Mantis) are one of my favourites and the design looks great on the blaster.
Your videos always make me laugh, even more than comedy sometimes. I just love watching reactions! 😃
I'm thinking about getting one for home defense, burn holes in the wall to beat the intruder before he beats you ;)

8:28 you can see the MEMES all the way to kevin.
6:09 Fighting a drone with a giant eyeball. Perfect use of a dangerous weapon.
Styropyro added a lens to his gun so the 8 laser converge to a single point, adding up as one 40 Watts laser. Yours doesn't have a lens and is thus an array of eight 5 Watt lasers. We can clearly see it on the wood, there's 8 marks, one for each laser.
I added a lens also but it was not that interesting. I wanted to do longer range stuff
LOL! He left Squarespace for Wix!

TornadoBeast yeah - I’ve got a weird name, I laugh at it too
What?
5:46 lasers are not affected by distance in the same way a normal light bulb is because all the individual photons are moving in the same direction so the intensity stays almost the same for a very long distance, whereas with a light bulb the photons spread out in all directions and therefor decrease in intensity the further away you are from the source. There would be an extremely small change in speed that the balloons pop due to the laser travelling through more air and possibly efficiency from the diode heating up but it would be an extremely small difference in in time.
Conor Stewart oh how much you know Dr. Smart! theoretically you are right, but practically lasers coming from imperfect diodes behave much different and are not that perfectly polarized anymore. AND particles in the air have a bigger influence than you think.
How much W do i need so i could light it at the moon and whole world would see it?
As he said they have poor divergence, the beams are not parallel, so in fact distance is very important. They will have a very high power at the focusing point, but away from that the beam is spread over a larger area so might not be able to achieve the level of heating required to pop the balloon.
Well thanks nerdzilla XD you are the Godzilla of *N E R D S . . .*

2/3 laser gun. 1/3 ad
3/3 laser gun. 0/3 ad
You should make a lens apparatus where you can adjust the focal point of the laser.
Terminator styles
This seems incredibly tame compared to latest laser vids
Looks like a wh40k shotgun, the kind space marine scouts use, but it's also in the 40 watt range awesome build!
The thing is that there is really no purpose to a handheld continuous-beam lasergun. Megawatt-class beams are doable, even cheap, if you're talking about very short pulses, and that will craterize whatever it hits, even mirrored surfaces. Single Joule pulses a microsecond long are strongly preferable to expending hundreds of Joules trying to just dump heat into the target for several seconds.
Like, from the standpoint of stopping power vs anything biological, 1-Joule explosions on the surface of the target far exceed the effect of sweeping a few hundred Joules over a wide area in several seconds. The former probably does similar nerve damage to a bullet impact, albeit without harming internal organs. The latter does nothing of the sort.
Peter Smythe wow
Actually, I can think of several uses - it depends on what you mean. At lower powers (you don't want to burn up what you're testing, after all), portable RAMAN is one really good use for CW laser energy (I'm working on a set of adapters for my optical spectrometer that uses different color diode lasers running between 50mw and 150mw to do portable RAMAN spectrometry). VERY sensitive movement detection is another use, and I've got some other ideas for moderate power CW lasers that I might explore some time. I was a bit surprised at the amount of charring from a 5w blue laser diode - my 50mw range blue module starts wood smoking almost instantly - but then, it's also focused. I would think 5w of blue laser energy in a small spot would be flaming almost instantly. Now, a 40 watt SINGLE BEAM would have several good uses, especially if it could be focused. (Tripod mounted might be a bit more useful than hand-held for something like what I'm visualizing.) (Laugh) In fact, I wish I had something like that a couple of years ago - we had a tree die and couldn't afford the prices asked by local tree firms to remove it. If I'd had a laser capable of burning wood at (let's say) 100 feet, it wouldn't have caused us the grief it did. I could have cut through the branches (even if it took time) small section by small section, rather than having them come crashing down in a single piece!
Pulse lasers have plenty of uses as well - I've been gathering the parts to build one for Laser Induced Breakdown Spectrometry. I hope to get at least a joule out (using a YAG rod). Maybe I'll have some of this going by the end of the summer! I get the laser built - I've got some other ideas I'm going to experiment with.
If they can miniaturize it into a light portable device, I can't think of a better firestarter.
Peter Smythe I'm kind of thinking that the damage to biological entities is Superfluous to the destruction of material cuz once the materials are destroyed the biological entities are no longer required
Pulse beams has is strengths as do continuous beams. It depends on the target and the material it's irradiating on, and what wavelength you're using and the beam quality...
BackyardScientitst, I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos, once I get the notification you've uploaded, I always sit back, relax, and grab a snack. You both combine an interesting topic in a cool and entertainint video. Keep it up!
Really glad you tested the drone after the exploding balloon. I wanted to see it, and you did it. Not much to see, but it made me happy!
Omg I was subbed before but at the mention of him liking halo makes me wanna Super sub
I died when Cody popped up! You and Cody are my two favorite science channels! (I really like them both, but on this channel don't ask who I prefer)

That was the smoothest way to slide in an add that i've ever seen
Lol, the cody's lab part was so funny.
Got to thumbs up for anyone willing to shoot their own Mavic Pro out of the air. Seemed like the fireball stole all the air away removing all the lift generated at the propellers causing it to fall.
Some rubber hit the props causing it to drop too.
Assuming it’s a normal combustion reaction (and not something like magnesium reacting with oxygen for whatever reason), then you would actually still have carbon dioxide and water after. Not to mention “air” would have filled in that space quickly. It probably has more to do with actual damage done to the drone than any sort of lack of air.
Lagnak I have a mavic as well. They don’t drop that easy unless you can stop the props from spinning. I’ve seen them fly with the props cut in half in torture tests.
TKO593 actually I think it was just the combustion in general throwing the drone off to a vertical angle loosing lift
UPBE4T RECON these things can fly with 25mph winds pushing on them. The gyro and gps hold it in position. You could push it hard with your hand and it self corrects. I don’t think the explosion had enough force to push it to a point where it could not regain its composure.
Terminator: I would like a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range Backyard scientist: no problem man here you go
Hey BackyardScientist, a.k.a. Luca Modric, you have enamored fans worldwide with your high level display of skills and heart throughout this World Cup. I have faith you will be the one to lift it. The best of luck on your game against France today.
If you diffuse the laser and use a bandpass filter for that range it's great for high speed illumination especially in 620nm and 808-850nm range will reduce diffraction or obscurence from flame and muzzle blasts
Good to know! I'd have to film in monochrome though
Boi WHAT!

You’re channel should be viral you’re videos are awesome 👏
Cool 😍😍😍. I get so excited every time seeing people using laser to set things on fire 🔥.
you uploaded! great to see a new video from you!
I think James Cameron _drastically_ underestimated how much power you'd need to melt metal and kill a Terminator.
FINALLY ... been waiting like a year for this video.
Also, i usually hate ads but this was amazing
"40 watt" is misleading. This is an array of eight 5-watt diodes, each with its own beam. It does not deliver 40 watts to anything besides the heatsink.
The only way to get a true output of 40 watts is to use a fiber-coupled array system or a CO2 tube.
Even the 5W is misleading, one of these 5-7W diode (NUBM44) is made with 4+ emitters at 1.5W each...
In reality this contraption is just a 32x 1.5W laser, that have an utterly bad beam quality.. Even a Na street light would have more laser propriety than this.
But what do you expect from this "wix" ad.
The divergence isn't too bad on the NUBM44s, but it's definitely not as perfect as pure single-cavity systems. Fiber-coupled blade stacks still perform better though.
And i'm like whut🙃
It's nubm06 and you can push them to 5W. Also I mentioned it was 8 5W diodes in the video. If you want to get so pedantic that each diode has multiple emitters that's just ridiculous.
I bought a 30w 975nm fiber laser on eBay and I'm going to mess around with it and see how easy it is to collimate and focus. If it goes good I'll splurge and get one of the more powerful modules. Or just combine a few of the 30w ones. I hear working with fiber is a pain in the butt though.
I also have a Nd:YAG laser, you can see it behind me in the opening of the video. It came from a Hellfire designator. I can't figure out how to trigger the tube though. The cavities filled with oil.
I tried it's predecessor, a blue 3W in my cnc-pcb-laser in one direction I got 50micron grooves in the other 200microns (0.2mm) too bad for smd.
I did go back to a 600mW UV single emitter to get 45microns in any direction, but it's a its limit to remove paint on copper cladded boards.
I love the incorporation of the copypasta in your wix ad
Nice.
LASERs are used to take out drones all the time. Those balloons were cool. The funny thing is even if the drone has a bad rotor it'll compensate and spin the other 3 slower.
This channel is full on awesome !
I started wacthing you today and couldnt stop

I love Hannibal tech.
That Cody's Lab joke made me Subscribe lol
I hope that one day you and Styropyro will team up to make projects and videos , I am sure you will make a very solid pair together.
Prediction: CZcams will consider this an assault rifle and not only de-monetize you but shut down your channel. Welcome to 2018.
In the meantime, that was cool! Good to see you doing more videos.
On 6:28 he says “I’d say that worked”
Even though his drone is on fire😐
I showed this to my epileptic brother, he liked it so much that he started foaming at the mouth and shaking on the floor
Stuff like this is what makes me one of the science class
Should have made it more 'shotgunesk' by making the light split using a crystal or something
You need to focus these leds in one point
Finally, a Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt range
you need to make a tutorial on how to assemble the laser part because thats like my childhood dream right there.
the drone crashed because the fire burnt all the air leaving none for the airfoils.
