As usual, you have insights that only a pro knows. You explanations are always clear and precise. It took me about one year of getting my toss right and then another half year to get my motion right. I was determined to make it work right and your tips were always helpful. Thank you. On the topic of the B'day hat, I have watched a lot of his videos and almost every serving video, Ryan always talks about the hat trick. My feeling is that if you have to resort to props to learn to serve, you have some serious problems. I think everyone has a different path to learning tennis and I think I was fortunate that it didn't take me that long. I have a reliable kick serve, flat serve and a decent slice. Still working on getting the slice more consistent on hitting that line. But I always love your lessons. Keep making them, you are definitely making a difference in this world.

Getting back into tennis after 25 years. Determined to succeed but the serve is hardest to master. Appreciate and look forward to a consultation in the near future. Been doing a lot of research and the interesting thing was Patrick Moratoglou was recommending a student to drop the racquet head before driving with the legs. Hi Jeff, Thanks for your comments and the solution you provided.
I watched my videos many times and i know i have this issue. I'm sure that Using Continental (sometime more open on Slice or Kick) and also using my legs in serve as well with a delay. I tried to fix this issue several times and almost failed.
The main issue I faced is the lost my rhythm during this change (drive the legs faster) . my toss goes away, miss hit the ball and contact point and ... it makes me turn back to my original serve motion. would be appreciated if you can give me a solution to not losing the rhythm

I loved that "phone booth" tip best, will try that soon; since you have mentioned Ryan´s bday hat drill on "two minute tennis" you two guys should make a common serve video as you probably have a lot of followers who have subscribed both channels anyway. In that video you can both elaborate your tips and we can go out and practice both. As an intermediate player I have learned a lot from you both so far.

    Exactly Jeff 1/2 serve
The best tip I learned and do all the time. I will send you my serve video soon.
Sometimes my arms move up together I stop and shake my arm and do the 1/2 serve using no legs platform stance for 5x.
I got complimented on my serve ( I guess on his end of the court it tagged the line sliced or kicked up and caught him off balance alot of times) I told the fellow he should watch your videos.

  • @marcisikoff
    @marcisikoff Před 2 lety +2

Definitely for power, you want your forward motion toward the service line to be in sync with your body turning. Legs do most of this work and the power comes from turning your hips, then waist, then shoulder (because of hips moving) so your arm strength is enhanced so use your arm to generate power. Continental grip is needed for power or pronating either way for spin. In any case, the serve should look the same regardless of slice or power. So yes, as Jeff says start racquet down until you've just started turning.

Honestly this is an amazing video so is your other video about 3 tips or mistakes to avoid in order to prevent the waiters tray... but what i really liked about this video is addressing the birthday hat thing, cuz i saw that video and tried to mimic it without the actual hat. I didn't improve at all and i wanted to know your opinion on this technique. What helped is focusing before anything on my grip on making always a continental grip because if it facing down its wrong from the start. I achieved a 40 to 50 % improvement just by watching that video, and the other thing i liked about this one is the half serve technique. I really can't wait to go try it. You want to aim for a 45 degree in proportion to your contact point. General feel will dictate though that you are a bit earlier when going cross court and a bit late when going straight or down the line.

@@ldeue4837 with aprox 45 degree i feel like im not unwinding enough, and i noticed that its easier to get more topspin when i have around 80 degree angle so my arm has more freedom and space to go up.

@@ldeue4837 wait, if torso should be at aprox 45 degree to the target then it means, my contact point is more in front of my body(in front of torso) instead of the side of where the torso is facing.

@@Invesre Easiest way for me to picture it, is to draw an imaginary line from the middle of my chest to where contact is taking place, the 1 hander will have more extension but you still want to be around a 45 with your body weight going into the ball whenever possible.

For the half serve drill it looks like a version of the party hat. I think the two approaches are just slight variations

I have continental grip but change to forehand grip when in trophy position. How to stop this?

My son does his early racquet drop a different way. He has a lot of shoulder external rotation ROM and he externally rotates his shoulder almost 90 degrees before beginning to drive up so that the racquet is face up behind his head. The first drill might help but the other two aren’t likely to help him. We tried the half serve and he still drops it that way.

I think you should mention what happens to the non dominant arm. What i notice is that the non dominant arm is rapidly brought down along with the opening of the chest and action of the legs.

Jeff, you got a helluva serve, but you're definitely not invited to my birthday party

  • @NamesAreRandom

Don't like ulnar deviate. Basically the serve kinetic chain is throwing a ball high the air. Do the serve right and it feels just the same - what the wrist does, the timing of the racquet drop, etc comes naturally - that's what turned my serve from a bunch of independent bits into something that just happens - I just do a throwing action. Anyway if I ulnar deviate while throwing a ball it feels wrong, hence it's not right in the serve. The birthday hat is actually more accurate to the feel you get and what you look like throwing a ball.

I love ulnar deviate as you can tell from the video. It corrects a lot of issues for players and the Birthday hat while helping with keeping the palm down it creates other issues leading to inefficiency
