Hogwarts Legacy released earlier this year for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X, with previous generation console versions arriving three months later. However, the version of the game that has most people interested is the one for Nintendo Switch. After being delayed by three and a half months, the Switch port was finally released on November 14. So how does a game that caused problems for even high-end machines at launch perform on the Switch’s aging hardware? Let’s take a look and compare it to the PC version.

Honestly I think porting to Switch should be a lesson for developers on how to optimize games for lower end hardware given with enough time and budget.

I think that the fact they actually ported such a huge game, and actually made it playable on the worlds most popular console at the time. It's impressive in my opinion. People forget the switch chip is 6 years old and VERY limited.

The console is almost 7 years old now and the chip is actually from 2015, so more than 8 years old!
Not very limited if it can run Zelda then it should be able to run this
correction the switch's processor (tegra x1) is actually from 2015 so 8 year old tech to be exact.

I've played the Switch version for about 6 hours so far and I'm really enjoying it. Okay yeah the graphics aren't amazing, but it performs well. I don't have a PS5 or a good enough PC to play it, so I'm just glad I can still enjoy the game on Switch.
For running on six year old mobile hardware the graphics don't look bad at all

I think every single review thats talking about the visuals is forgetting one thing.. THE SIZE OF THE SWITCH SCREEN. In person the game looks beautiful. Not its not a ps5, but all of the CZcams videos are showing the game blown up in size.. basically magnified..but when played in handheld mode with a much smaller ratio, it looks about 10x better then every single CZcams video
I play the switch version and noticed it looks way cleaner in handheld mode. Though I have the OLED switch so no idea how it'd look on the original or lite

The biggest change is the load zones between areas of the map, which is super understandable
Yeah totally fine with a load zone into Hogsmead if it means the game is stable
I found it interesting that the Switch version is "less open world" with loading times between areas, is this due to the Switch not having an SSD or because it only has 4 GB of RAM? I was curious if the PS4 and Xbox One versions that use HDs are also like this, does anyone know?
Yes they are, this thing is also happening in the PS4 Xbox One versions as far as my understanding@@MoonSarito
@@MoonSarito entering a shop in Hogsmead on Xbox One requires waiting almost half a minute for door to open. So yes, older consoles with HDDs also struggled with loading some areas.
@@MoonSarito It think it's a mix of factors. Surely the low ram is one of the biggest problems, but also the not-so-powered mobile cpu couldn't guarantee a good transition between different areas. Right now you can see the popup (understandably) when reaching the ground (if flying) or reaching too fast certain zones or even when loading the game after a reboot. Just think about reading and rendering even more areas, there's not enough power. Not even mentioning the lack of ssd or even a good HDD. But, we must admit, it's still a great porting, surely better than MK1 and GTA trilogy
I consider the Switch version a great opportunity to play the game. Although the graphics are obviously downgraded, it is still amazing that I can play the game on a 6 years old platform, also considering that my PC is too old to play the steam version.
Same here. My PC will die before I upgrade just for a game. I’m enjoying this game on the Switch so far.
My laptop 11 years old will even explode when installing this game.

Hogwarts had such a GIANT system reqs before launch but somehow it can run on switch... lol what a miracle.
I think having a game like hogwarts running on a system that has a gpu thats around 1/3 the performance of a GTX 950 is incredibly impressive. The devs did alright with this. I don't think they could have done any better.
I got this game on pc and loved it but because of my constant moving schedule & work i can never spend to much time on the game, i love the effort they put on this port, thanks to that ill be playing it more often when im not at home
on PS4 a lot of things in the game were simplified to give good performance. One that I noticed was in the castle, the bridges between buildings were all covered, whereas in the PS5 version they were open so you could see the view. I wonder if the Switch version is the same.
Ah I would imagine you're right! Near the end of the video I passed by some opaque white windows in the Switch version. I meant to go find them in the PC version to see if they were transparent there, but ran out of time to check it. But I imagine they made similar cutbacks in this version too.
Switch also has them closed.
I was looking for this specifically, one bridge is open - the ones they say is held up by magic - but the other ones are closed with stained glass windows that are opaque
I don’t mind the loading screens, they are annoying but you don’t have to wait that long. I’m just glad outside you can fly and walk around with no loading screen except for when you have to enter hogsmeade.
this is great to hear! my PC is a Dell, so not a gaming PC in the slightest, but i’m glad i’ll potentially be able to enjoy this on my Switch if i buy it
Great Review! I have it on PC but I catch myself playing it a lot more on the Switch due to its portability. When frames drop or I look hard enough at the graphics I kinda sigh a bit but for the most part I tend to forget about it and have a great time playing. Regardless I always remind myself that it's kind of phenomenal that they were even able to port this thing over lol. I'd recommend it!
They sacrifice resolution over performance and give an edge on portability. But it is acceptable knowing the switch has an older system.
I think Witcher 3 is the best example of a solid port to the Switch and I think Hogwarts Legacy is a very close second. It's astounding how well they did getting this on the Switch.

The game looks good! I don’t mind low res textures, i think it barely affects my experience. 30 fps for a game like this is fine too. I’m pleasantly surprised

I got my Switch to play this game on Monday and I'm really enjoying it so far. It runs fine on my console - although this could be because it isn't competing with memory from any other big games, the only other game I have is Nintendo Sports (the free game that isn't really free)
The only mild graphical glitch so far is my MC's smile is a bit too wide when she talks but this game is amazing

Wow, considering the hardware it's running on the visuals of this port are incredible, and the performance is fairly solid
One thing I don't think you covered that SwitchUp noted, is that when you're in combat in outdoor areas the framerate can drop to 20FPS or less.
regardless of the jaggard edges and all that honestly i expected that on the switch, when buying games like this on switch i almost expect these sort of things, the fact it runs and imo looks pretty decent for a switch game is impressive in itself
i think with patches as switch is new territory for the developers well see updates and slight improvements

Thank you very much! It took a ton of work to put together (and I was surprised it only ended up being about 9 minutes with how many hours I put into this one) but I'm happy with how it turned out!

Yeah this just shows how exhausted the switch hardware is. This is absolutely a well done port. This is probably the first port that's introducing the new standard for how new ports need to be downgraded significantly just to play it on this outdated console.

Yeah I was thinking about that as well. pokemon looks and runs worse than an unreal engine open world game made for series x, PS5 and PC.
Very impressive for a handheld that can run for a proper long time on battery and on a 7 inch oled screen you won’t notice a lot of difference.I finished it on ps5 but would happily play it in handheld on the switch.

I remember the days where the mobile version was a whole new game. The downgrades trade off for mobile play is worth it
you know, looking at this comparison really shows how much the technology has evolved on the graphics side, you always hear people saying that the leap between generations has decreased with each new one, but this shows that there IS a noticeable difference once you look at it more closely.
My only complaint with the port is during combat, the main characters cloak physics are turned off. :/
After seeing how MK1 looked on the switch, I expected this port to look worse than it is now. This is actually worth getting for the switch if I haven't already bought it.
Their effort for porting to an entry level gaming is appreciated. Imagine that you can play heavy AAA games on the go
I play mine on the legion go and it plays and looks absolutely beautiful!
I think the use of dithering could've helped distant, lower res textures look sharper.
That said, this is darn impressive for a handheld console.
I reckon the SD card is a huge factor in fps drops.
As someone who once tried booting Shadow of the Tomb Raider on PC via SSD then again on SD card, the performance was night and day.
Though considering even a faster HDD will outperform an SD card, it's definitely time for an m.2 or something on Switch or its sequel.

I got pretty happy playing and finishing the game in the switch, since my PC won't run the game past the character creation. And the graphics didn't even bother me once I was used to them, the good performance was the diferential
I just ordered my steam oled and can’t wait to have some better graphics. I was just super grateful to play this game though!

I was so surprised, props to the people responsible for the port because I truly was expecting a terrible port, I even thought they’d make some kind of combat only or level based game the same way ds and 3ds ports of games used to straight up just be cashgrab platformers
I noticed the dialogue doesn't work all the time. Sometimes they talk and then it's just the background music. Is this fixable with a patch.

as long as you play this in handheld mode, given the ancient switch hardware, it's a pretty solid port
Ffs yes the Switch hardware is old but Switch had shown its a fighter of a system and even newer and more powerful hardware struggled with this game’s engine.

I honestly would have preferred an art style overhaul, not just because it would have run better, but also because I don't like the excess detailing on the models, it grosses me out.
That's BEYOND Impressive for an AAA game to actually run at 30 FPS most of the time. Most if not all other AAA games run subpar at 25 or even lower like 15-20 FPS on Switch.
I'm a PC and Switch gamer so I played HL on PC already as I kind of expected subpar experience but honestly I wouldn't be mad playing this if I had to...
Wish more Devs would optimize their game better on Switch...

Are there any differences in quality between the normal switch and the oled one?
The graphics remind me of older games like gta 4 where they still look great but are showing in age. There’s a lot of other examples but I’m having a brain fart at the moment lol. All in all looks good to me, just feels like I’m playing a great older game with modern mechanics.
I just hope they will now fix the PC version about crashing when using DLSS 3 and raytracing.

They really had to downgrade the graphics and framerate to make this game playable on Switch, and players doesnt care about it! Theyre having fun with it, while on the plane, on the car or on the school. You cant play PS5 with you on the plane, Nintendo Switch does. so yeah, they dont care about the graphics and the framerate.

Idc about the textures, as long as I can tell what it is and it isn’t 8 bit, it’s fine. I have this game on the PS4 so if I want looks, I’ll go there, and just having the entirety of the game in the palms of your hands is why I want this version.
before i bought my version on switch (my pc couldnt handle it) i heard that the load time are horiible but they are not bad

2:20 : It's normal, the definition on switch is way low than pc. Switch barely success 1080P, the first Zelda was in 900P. That's why it take less place on the "hard drive" and the quality is less good. What was the resolution used on pc for the test ? 1080p or 1440 or more ? (with all the options in ultra ?). It plays amazingly well. My wife and I played it on the big screen for about four hours and had no issues other than the weird Pitch bug for the player character.

This running at 30fps make sense. What bothers me is ports of very older games on weaker hardware ported to the switch that's locked at 30. too many of those.
That's what happens if a studio really cares about a port to a less powerful system.
I'm kinda impressed and like how the Switch version looks.
And even if I don't like the Harry Potter movies, I getting interested by this game.

No tit for tat, not hyping the game, not bombing the game.
Me personally, i love it so far, i think it needs some work here and there, but its fun, most of the time very beautiful and immersiv and just like with witcher 3, cut in graphics takes nothing from the charme of the game beneath the graphics.
I also had fun with ps1 or x360 games at one time, i did not unlearn having fun with good games and not so good graphics, because graphics are only as good to what you compare them to.

I got it for the switch as i know my pc would crash just trying to play this game honestly thr graphic drop and framerate isn't that bad. Got to remember switch is 7 years old so the graphics and gameplay may not be as sharp and detailed as the pc and other newer tech. Besides i have hopes that portkey could always send out an update that could increase the games graphic design later on if they do decide to make a dlc for the game

nintendo should just give us switch 2 and start porting newer games there instead of keep forcing to push it like now
Nintendo will bring out Switch 2 when it’s ready and why would Nintendo stop selling the current Switch just because you want Switch 2? The current Switch is still selling very well, be patient and enjoy the current Switch.
Good for a road trip but the controller reaction lag is frustrating. I may just need new controllers.
hogwarts legacy working on the switch is a major demonstration on why optimization is so vital for games. many modern AAA games opt out of optimization, which is why we are getting games that are 200+ GB in size and unoptimized files and code making games choppy and laggy even on modern hardware.

its only right that the graphics will be much much dial down, from more than 70GB to 14GB, and the switch has similar hardware to an iPhone 7/8, I'm more surprised they pulled it off, and honestly i wish more developers would port their PC games to Mobile phones
I think the witcher 3 port looks much better with the update (that being said it is an older game)

I'd definitely go with the PC version. I'd only recommend the Switch version if it's the only console available to you and the only way you'd be able to play the game.

They did the magic by nerfing the openworld aspect of the game, now there are loading zones, but it's honestly still impressive, it looked better than The Witcher 3 at launch and have higher resolutions overall too
But they added so many loading screens that weren't there before. But still impressive
Playing my recently purchased switch OLED has made me realize how little I care about graphical fidelity if the experience is well optimized. This is coming from someone with a $2000+ gaming PC

I tried to play it on my PC but purchased it from steam and had issues throughout the entire game, could never get past the beginning of the game. Hopefully switch will be better, idc too much about the graphics since I never got to enjoy them anyway
Give Nintendo some credit they made it work granted it might not play or look the best but it definitely plays on the system but pro tip get the psychical copy if possible
