Shin Megami Tensei is a fantastic series renowned for its grand plots of bringing back a world verging on complete destruction, or in some cases, destroying it yourself. The amount of agency you have as the player to choose how to shape the new world has always been a draw for me, but this begs the question. What are the best endings in the series? I already made a top 5 alignment reps video, but that doesn’t necessarily mean their endings are the best. Sometimes the path to a better world is a difficult one to walk. Let’s talk about the most satisfying climaxes to any Shin Megami Tensei game, my ideal worlds. My law bias will shine through as I almost always lean towards their endings in shin megami tensei. SMT is more deep than most people give the series credit for so some picks may surprise long viewers of the channel. From angelic beings bestowing godlike powers to tearing down the very fabric of the universe to set things right, shin megami tensei has a lot to offer when it comes to narrative. If SMT IV is ever remade, it would be amazing to have a neutral path that is a lot more telegraphed through the game
^This right here. The neutral route is my favourite is the game but it’s basically finally getting to not commit genocide by going to the trouble of finding and completing almost all the side quests (I still have nightmares of roaming around Tokyo for side quests because I didn’t realize that the photo quests that are mandatory for the neutral route are given to you by npcs).
Sadly it is rough to get for most people first time around so this owuld be nice

While smt4 is my favorite game of all time,ngl having the neutral route be nigh impossible to obtain without a guide is a bit dumb cuz the issue could easily be elviated by showing you the value of each law and chaos answer and marking the quests relevant to the chalice of hope questline
I think the neutral ending being somewhat out of the way makes it much more interesting, you have to actively work for it instead of just going through the game.
Also the neutral ending at times seems almost like a playground rumor with how obtuse it is, and i think that's cool.

But you need both the goddess of Tokyo and masakado to break the ceiling. what about all the demon eating most of both groups of power? What I'm asking is what's there next move as humans seem like they just get obliterated
@@nolongeranobody869 the people of Tokyo have the inspiration to fight for Tokyo, many will die but many more will live. Any demons led by the angels or lucifer retreat after both parties leader's are killed as well. Then to add more insurance, Masakados is the guardian entity of Tokyo, I doubt he didn't have a plan to perform some sort of cleanup

It's kind of stupid imo. Putting aside that you're forfeiting law to do it, you're taking the route of Japanese nationalism by destroying all the preexistent infrastructure in Mikado and moving everyone for Tokyo, not even prepared for the proper inhabitance of the people who've been living there, just for the sake of preserving the "city's spirit."
Oh, and not to mention that Flynn isn't even really Japanese, so why he would just comply to Maskado's plan is beyond me.

Nocturne Freedom enjoyer. I'm a big fan of it myself and if TDE wasn't a thing it would be my go to
I respect having a clear Law bias in SMT given how YHVH is portrayed in most of the games.
Devil Survivor 1 and then Overclocked's take on chaos was great. It was always about YHVH being unjust and laying this ordeal on humanity. In the end, you get to take the battle up to the heavens and spare humanity from the fighting. I love that just about every character joins you on that route, including the law rep. Unless you pick chaos genocide, then you're just kinda being a dick.
Freeing humanity from the conflict seems like a great option to me
I'm surprised to see Tony not include DDS2's ending. That was one of the more sound and thorough conclusions in the series thus far, alongside it's philosophical nature, it made for quite the ending to behold.
I loved the DDS duology, some of SMT's greatest games.
I think its due to there being only one ending .
I see people occasionally ask for a DDS3 and they must not comprehend the finality of the story

for me the best endings are

Best neutral imo was in 4 apocalypse both Bond and anarchy.
Bond itself maybe like your stereotype power of friendship ending in anime but i loved this one because for the first time you see that every fraction in Tokyo agree and put aside their idealism, philosophy or etc for the better future and also fight alongside with you, and probably this is the neutral ending that Isn't gonna be just temporary solution until both the force of law or chaos Will comeback.
Anarchy probably seen as chaos like ending but i like the idea that being neutral ≠ good. being neutral itself can be both flawed and evil without having the same ideal like 2 fraction: law and chaos, and it explored very well in anarchy.
Killing God with the power of friendship is peak
i don't really care about most alignment choices in SMT, but devil survivor probably has some of the most nuanced and well thought out endings. i can see myself going for any of them really, except the genocide ending.
If the game wasn't so hard for me, I'd have replayed it a hundred times by now lol. It's so good
@@Tony4You if you follow a guide, you can set up a save with all the ending options available to you by the end and just hold on to that save.
One of my most beloved endings (mostly because it was my first SMT game) has to be New Neutral in Strange Journey
The player evolved and became something more than human, that will always fight against the forces of Law and Chaos everytime is needed.
And even if the humanity keeps making mistakes (since it is stated that the incident that started everything already has happened more than 7 times) , they still try to advance and to live in peace, they just need the chance of making changes for the better and a little help, but help coming from themselves.
Also, you get to save almost everyone that helped you in your journey, and become feared by both demons and angels and that is just nice.

This is gonna sound weird, but one of my favorite endings is SMT 4's White ending. Mainly from a conceptual perspective. The idea that you can go "Fuck the morality system" is just funny to me.
Also the best ending to go for on a fresh save file due to it being an early end. IE quicker access to New Game +.
I never gave it much thought for the ranking, but the white ending definitely has a lot philosophically to chew on

@@Tony4You Personally, white ending goes even beyond than other endings.
We already knew that the basic three endings (Law, Neutral and Chaos) having their own ideologies in many Megatan titles, while some titles would rather using people names or their ideologies names as their routes. Asides from the neutral route which provides a temporary solution every time before another shit storm kicking in, Law and Chaos routes take things way more extreme which either one of them will eventually wipe out the human race. Every route has their own issues and this affects the future in the long term. But this is where the While comes into place.
After getting sucked into the Yamato Perpetual Reactor, we encountered the White who took us to visit both blasted Tokyo (Law) and infernal Tokyo (Chaos). As we saw, both future will lead into their own destruction and human will be doomed no matter what future they step into (Neutral route would be the similar things as they state this route only prolong the issue and it will come back eventually). But the White route changes everything. Despite the White route will lead into the destruction of the entire universe and the future, what they did is simply freeing the human from God's control from this never ending cycle. And after destroying the Yamato Reactor, the black holes was created and it erased everything (Tokyo, Mikado, every existed creatures, universe and future). While this sounds way more extreme than any route, it did basically provides an ultimate solution of ending the cycle once and for all and humans are no longer suffering in the nothingness (No pain, no feeling, nothing at all).
Although on my playthrough, I did ended up denying the White offer and running into the Neutral route which I personally recommended, the White ending is something I want to see in a JRPG for a while. Many JPRG series never let the players go down the rabbit hole and let them choose the path they want whether it's extreme or not. Instead, many of them just stick with the light path and usually present the one-side religious belief adventure to erase the source of the dark and restore the peace to the world which never goes any deeper in this perspective (Especially DQ series which constantly fills with this thing). Shin Megami Tensei, on the other hand, is probably one of the few, if not, the only series that actually goes way beyond the usual JRPG adventure in many titles. And with the White ending being presented in SMT IV, I think this is such a fantastic job of including this possibility, something that the other JRPG series could take this concept if the plot works in its way :D
The white ending is so nihilistic, it’s also not possible since there’s infinite universes so they will never be able to fully destroy everything
My favorite is by far the polar opposite of yours, the Naoya 8th No Mercy run. Why? It has the protagonist becoming a villain but not out of the blue.
MC has seen the worst of humanity and angels don't actively help, at least not as actively as the party does. That is God testing humanity and while it will strengthen it in case of success, this will only bring ruin should it fail to defeat something frankly far out their league.
Abel could try and reason with humans, but after seeing policemen and soldiers killing for fun, rioters trying to do, well, have thier way with Midori and the government trying to manipulate everything, is it really worth to spare them? Abel decides that no, these guys need a lesson, help the angels and you will face his wrath. But someone still has faith in humanity and enough courage to stand up to Abel. It's Yuzu.
She spends the whole game as a scared young girl who wants to go back home and forget everything. But seeing MC, someone who valiantly fought at her side, following this dark path is too much. Atsuro doesn't have the guts to betray the overlord even if he doesn't fully agree with him methods, but Yuzu does. She becomes more brave than Atsuro and summons Metatron himself, becoming one of the final bosses, and the main heroine, of the route. It's basically your typical "shonen main character getting the final power up" but from the POV of the villain. She might have failed but that doesn't erase her development, her resolve to fight her old friends.
This is the moment Abel became Hiesenberg.

You make a good point, I didn’t notice before reading this how proactive Yuzu was in that route, considering that she’s basically following your lead for most of the other routes, and in her own route she’s basically deciding to run away from taking any responsibility for what’s happening.
Tbh the law endings are my favorite even though they are '' kill human because humans are unclean''.
Great list, and great video as always! I had mixed feelings on SMT IV's Neutral path for a while, but I've come to really love it. While I do think it diminishes the moral debate between the Law and Chaos paths (the sheer awfulness of both has led to some very enjoyable and interesting discussions among friends), it does such an excellent job of emphasizing what is, in my eyes, the main theme of IV that I don't see people talk about much. Walter and Jonathan are both individuals with incredibly strong ideals, ideals which are manipulated by outside forces to radicalize and weaponize them to create a world that I don't believe either of them would have found particularly desirable (this is somewhat blurry with Walter, but made pretty clear with Jonathan). While the Law and Chaos paths display how destructive the perversion of one's ideals can be, the Neutral path sees the player and Isabeau stay true to their ideals in their purest form. To me, this is such a valuable message today as we live in a world so thoroughly divided due to forces that manipulate our ideals for self-gain, pushing us to lose sight of what is important to us in favor of a simpler and easier "Us vs. Them" world-view.
Also agree 100% on the Amane ending.
Devil survivor 1's law ending will always have a special place for me because imo its how law should be portrayed in mainline
It doesnt have to be a perfect choice of course but it should be as equally valid to pick as chaos and neutral. No more overdone genocide and outdated view of Abrahamic religions but rather actual research on how each faith portrays God.
And on that note,law has always been portrayed better when God isnt shown as a physical figure but rather one where each side of the conflict interpret his will differently which fits a whole lot more seemlessly with the moral ambiguity the series strives for.
Not saying a physical portrayal cant work but it needs to be done more thoughtfully than "hurrhurr genocidal dictator who is the final boss even on the law route".
Smt 6 better have something as good as DS1 law ending
Agreed. Tho Atlus is definitely getting better with their portrayals of Law. SMT5 was a step in the right direction for how Law is portrayed, and the last time God was portrayed negatively was in SMT4A which got them a lot of backlash and was mainly a callback to SMT2 which was made in the early 90s with little to no research actually done on religeons like Atlus does today. Even Maruki's ending in Persona 5, despite being technicly a law-focused bad ending, is still mostly positive outside of some negative future implications (which aren't confirmed) and Sumire being screwed over and basically being erased from existance. This is unlike the P3 bad ending which is also seemingly positive where instead of the MC dying painfully EVERYONE DIES even if they don't feel it and it isn't shown on-screen.
In the more recent titles starting with Persona 5 (the game released by Atlus right after 4A) they renamed the "god of law" from *record scratch* to "Yaldabaoth," the false god from gnosticism who fits the god of law's depiction in SMT2 and 4A FAR better. And heck, it was already established in Strange Journey and SMT Nine that "god" in most SMT games is literally just Yaldabaoth, not the Christain God. And apocalypse states that all non-human beings in megaten (which includes Persona) are formed from humanity's thoughts and beliefs giving form to unique cognitive beings. This includes Yaldabaoth, who is a demon, and as stated in P5 is the embodiment of humanity's will to be controlled. Or, more precisely, the embodiment of the radical extremes of law.
The REAL christain god is the one portrayed in DeS1, SMT5, and arguably SMT1. A benevolent God who loves humanity but still issues righteous punishment against the truely wicked, but only after many warnings and chances to repent. "God" in SMT2 and 4A is actually an imposter after the real God abandoned that worldline to go to the SMT5 worldline after SMT1's neutral ending. After SMT5's true neutral ending God then went to the DeS1 worldline.
"god" in SMT2, the SMT4 duology, and the Persona 5 duology is an imposter known as Yaldabaoth, they just got the name wrong in earlier title because Atlus was ignorant of most of Christianity until after they did actual proper research in 2016 shortly before P5's release. During that time all the Atlus writers actually read the Bible and decided it was wrong to keep blaspheming Christianity. So afterwards they pledged to be "more culturally sensitive" which involved showing more nuanced takes of alignment and religeon starting with P5 and continuing to SJR, P5S, Royal, and SMT5.
DeS1 only had a positive portrayal of God because the writers actually read the Bible beforehand while other Atlus writers (primarily the writer back in the SNES/PS1 days and the Persona writers pre-P5) only knew the bible from Japanese pop culture. (which was largely inaccurate)
@@krimsonkatt thats how i intepreted it myself as well for the longest time,that the "YHVH" we've seen isnt the real God and that the real God is the great will/axiom
But what bothers me is that Atlus never commented on their portrayal of god since that old Kaneko interview. And considering Japan's histoty with christianity i feared atlus would keep that outdated view to the present day.
Coupled with the fact that most of law's portrayal in the series seems to purely come from the christian faith without tackling the way jewish and muslims display their faith in god.
I agree that atlus nowadays is bit better but they still have ways to go

My personal favourite is SJ Neutral ending. It may not be the best one out there, but it touched me in a very emotional level, and has become a cornerstone of my personal philosofy. Also, I am just a sucker for neutral and hopeful endings.

A lot of people thing that in 1 and 2 the flood and arc are just to get rid of the people and I have no idea why. The games clearly state that they are to get rid of demons and unfortunately humans that are "tainted" can't be saved, so it's seen as a mercy to them

Man I remember when I was playing smt4, I was so immersed in it that I cried a bit when Flynn woke up and Isabeau was calling out to him lol. I didnt know anything about routes, it was my first smt game and I managed to get Neutral on my first playthrough. Happy that I got the special edition for the game the year it came out along with Soul Hackers. The game made me think shit I never knew to think, all these concepts/ideas being new to me. I thank my 13 yo self for trying new games on my 3ds, also getting FE Awakening😂

No talk about Strange Journey Redux's endings? All the new endings added in Redux are just 🔥. Tho the original
endings kinda do suck besides Neutral if you remove the context from Redux.
Neutral+: Become doomguy and basically a badass, saving humanity time and time again from destruction in order to prove that humans can and will improve and evolve.
Law+: Create a world free of conflict and suffering while keeping humanity's free will. Basically the Maruki Ending from P5R without the drawbacks. A true utopia.
Chaos+: Create a world where both humans and demons are equal and live in harmony with one another where both races are able to grow and evolve together, hand in hand, sharing technology and culture.
While I love strange journey and do think it's the best gameplay and narrative wise, the endings don't exactly strike me as worlds I would want to live in lol.

My favorite ending is Apocalypse's true neutral ending, where everyone gets a happy ending and we get a shot of Nanashi working with his friends in rebuilding Tokyo with the help of the people of Mikado and some demons
You mean bonds ending, right? There is no "true neutral" in apocalypse, there's only the bonds/peace ending and the massacre/anarchy ending which are both "neutral" just different versions of it.

Your videos have made me really want to finish the SMT games I have, especially DeSu 2 since it seems to be collectively regarded as not as good as the first game. I vaguely remember the discourse for the game’s routes, particularly a dislike for Rolando which is a shame since DeSu 1’s Law ending with Amane is really good.

In all of megaten there is only ONE sex scene and it's in Giten Megami Tensei, an obscure SMT PC game released in the 90s infamous for it's gore and nudity. Otherwise the sex is only vaguely implied/off-screen, never shown in game.

I can't comprehend why anyone would choose endings where you work for God in a game series about getting to punch God in the face.
Hmmm, I’m sensing a clear law bias in your favourite endings 🤔(nothing wrong with that, you clearly showed why you like them). My personal favourite is the Strange Journey redux new neutral ending where you became an entity fighting back the Schawrzfelt over and over to try and give Alex a chance to live the life she wants. I love how it’s realistic that people aren’t going to change that quickly, especially on a global scale, but is still hopeful that there are those that want the best for humanity, and that there are good parts about humans that are worth protecting.

I have a soft spot for Chiaki's ending from Nocturne. Throughout the game Chiaki has been preaching about the survival of the fittest and whatnot. However, despide having amassed all that magatsuhi, becoming Baal's Avatar and climbing to the very top of the tower of Kagutsuchi, the one who ended up defeating Futomimi, Noah and Ahriman was not her, but the Demifiend. So by the very reason of Shijima in order to become the new ruler of the world, she would have to kill the Demifiend to prove her claim as the strongest demon... or die trying
As far as SMT I goes, if not Neutral, Law fits the narrative most closely. The Church is in power, the angels are present and active... makes a lot more sense than going from SMT I Chaos to SMT II's opening.
I don't typically go Law, but I agree, Amane's ending in DS1 is fantastic. Not that the MC going off to be another Demi-Fiend isn't badass, but there's something about Amane's ending that just...clicks and jives.
If only they made SMT DS3. The 3ds was the perfect system to release it on since they could have called it SMT DS3D, but sadly much like ffta2 it ended up being the last title in the turn based tactical spinoffs.
SMT 1 and Devil Survivor 1 Law endings are based in the new testament i think, the rest is based in the old.

Ah, a fellow Lawfag, It's been a long time indeed since I've met a fellow in arms.
I think putting 1st an ending where you basically give up yourself to prove what the will of god wants goes against the fighting that represents SMT. The best endings are the ones that get you to be free from anyone's will and make your own future.
Can't clear my thoughts enough for full top5, but I can at least give my personal favorite
Haru's ending from Devil Survivor 1
Something about piecing together the mystery about her and Aya and saving the people involved to even get the chance to achieve the ending was nice, and it felt hugely rewarding to completely rid the mortal realm of demons after all the hardship endured in the lockdown
Song of Hope
definitely the hardest ending to get with the most conditions to meet. Plus the final fight is very thematic, to battle Babel without your demons as they get sent away. Humanity fighting for their future. Just for the love of all that is do not use Black Frost as a tamer since he too will get sent away with the rest of the demons
Most every ending in Devil Survivor 1 could be the best in the series, goes to show how great the game is. Haru's especially stands out as one of the best Neutral endings as well with the backstory of her character

SMT 3- Hope ending (forgot what it was called but it is the one where you choose no side but retain your humanity during your choices. Also I was never able to get through the 3rd Kalpa way back and was relatively new to SMT so...)
SMT 4- Neutral Ending
SMT 4 Apocalypse- Peace ending
SMT Devil Survivor - Amane ending (my second was the ending where you banish the demons but this was my first and it had a more positive impact for me)
SMT Devil Survivor 2- Al Saiduq's ending
SMT 5- None really... I did get Chaos on my first go but I didn't feel all to satisfied and I have yet to try and get the True Ending on another play through and from what I have heard from spoiler free forums, it doesn't seem like one that would really satisfy me in the end. Kind of wish there was a Khonsu route or a Fairy village route.
For me, the law ending in smt 2 is one of the most insane and entertaining endings in the entire franchise. In no other game is Law treated so well, and thats despite the fact you destroy planet earth. In fact, thats part of Law's strongest points, that at times it takes doing something truly horrible to realize youve been played.

What if pokemon had a Law, Neutral and Chaos alignment system as well as a Light, Mixed and Dark morality system from SMT for legendary and many other pokemon? Because I think that Giratina would be Law aligned as part of Arceus Order while having Mixed morality as the Satan stand-in while Necrozma would be Chaos aligned as one of the Alpha pokemon enemies as the lucifer stand-in? 👼💡
I haven't seen or played much of SMT related games. If I had to pick for the time being it'd be SMT3 Nocturne True Demon Chaos ending, Neutral Ending from Strange Journey Redux, Devil Survivor Overclock Chaos ending. Nocturne has the more satisfy and truthfully a funny route going so far to become more demon-like while getting rid of any humanity you had left in you. For Strange Journey I just like it's own oxymoron of where you fight for humanity all the while humanity continues to destroy itself and to an extension repeat history, but still believing that humanity deserves a chance. For Devil Survivor Overclock, it's rather interesting if you make the chaos ending the last ending after seeing the others, several times Metatron will mention you have a power inside you, warning should you fall for said temptation there will be judgement. Becoming the King of Demons further proves that point and your given the option to not kill any humans that try to come at you.

I still have no idea how I managed to stumble on the neutral ending path in smt 4 on my first playthrough lmao.
I LOVE a theory I read before that Devil Survivor 1 world is the world Saiduq created and he is God there and that is why he creats lockdown and tests humanity instead of just nuking them like in other games.
It obviously is false but hey it's a fun thing to ponder from time to time
I haven't played a lot of SMT so I will just list down my top 3.

I just realized that I enjoy the endings of DS2 even though I much prefer 1. I like how kind of realistic the ending are and I can see it happening in real life if an apocalypse does happen. No grandeur just rehabilitation with different style. I guess. Isamu's ending is just relatable honestly.
And P.S. I never really finish a playthrough of DS2 with the Daichi ending. I always pick between the two extremes or freedom. Like come on, you are given an opportunity to change things. Atleast increase your penis size or improve something in your life. ANYTHING.

I would have liked to see god and merkabah reaction when the reactor was about to be destroyed in the white ending They should have included a what if explanation god using his power to stop the white ending. Also I was confused was it completely explained why kiyoharu being a law rep was rejected even in the dlc besides the “ no longer needed line”?

I love Amane's ending but I'm stuck on the final boss of Day 7 lol
1: neutral: strange journey, yeah the original one did very well by showing the power of humanity.
2: neutral: smt 4, same reasons of you less the part pf the side quest and the balance karma
3: can i put catherine here? Because the K ending its very wholesome for me
4: freedom ending smt 3: i did the true demon ending more because of the challenge but the freedom ending is very satisfactory
5: chaos ending in smt devil survivor: just because i can put a end on some NPC
I feel like IV's law ending is probably the best and most hopeful.

Al Saiduq/Alcor/Anguished One ending is one of the best Neutral ending in the franchise and what I considers to be the true Neutral ending of DeSu 2 rather than Daichi's "return back to where it was before"

@@Tony4You I used to hate it as I wrongly believed that becomeing a True Demon has Lucifer take away your autonomy but after looking things over and going through the remaster I realized everything about TDE is your choise your own actions there's no lies or trickery at play here just your own decision to leave your humanity behind because you decided they weren't worth saving along with a world traped in a pointless cycle there's nothing stopping you from overthrowing Lucifer after YHVH is taken out. True Demon is an ending about forging your own path even if others dam you for it. It also helps that my faith in humanity's was eroded quite a bit by living in LA for 5 to go to school for a game dev degree I saw levels of stupidity I thought only existed online and made me think ya know maybe most people aren't worth saving after all and that the Freedom ending isn't all its cracked up to be
