There are countless demons from all across the world added in shin megami tensei. From the angels and demons of modern religions(show lucifer), regional folklore figures(show ippon datara), and even pop culture figures(show hell biker), but there are some demons that always stood out to me as strange. These are some demons I recognized not from old religious books or stories of legends, but local news and true crime. This got me interested in researching some of these demons based on real people, but the further I researched the more I understood why they deserved to be called demons. True evil isn’t something just in the realm of fiction, the most frightening demon could be right next door. This is a pretty big departure from the normal SMT Lore videos as it has very little to do with shin megami tensei in the first place, but this little dive into true crime is something I've wanted to do for a while now. Richard Ramirez and Aleister Crowley would normally have no business being in the same video, but that is the beauty of shin megami tensei and smt lore in general. True crime is an incredibly interesting genre of youtube video, and I hope to do the case studies of these individuals justice. Richard Ramirez or the night stalker - Hry

Can we get a video of all the different censorships made in different versions of megaten games?
theres more irl people as demons in smt id like to see covered most are from persona 2 like rasputin faust etc
This may seem out of nowhere but, can you do a video about: what if FNAF was in smt. You can do any character from any game or book in any smt game.
Deirdre said "I can fix him" and did lmao
They said it couldn't be done. What good morals does to a mfer
this proves that people has access to redemption, should they try hard enough.
I thought the trope of a woman wanting to have a child with a guy the first second they meet only happened in harem animes, Crowley was truly the main character of his time.
magic pussy
@@xcell_r4thr87 Seinen MC who starts out pure, experiences tragedy, illness and becomes corrupted from a negative character arc, only to be redeemed by serendipity during the third and final arc.
Wow Alistair Crowley really lived his life in opposite extremes disturbing but fascinating
For some people it's all or nothing, extreme is all they know
Ay chill nightstalker 2
Bro switched teams twice.
Moderation is key I guess
crowley the escapegoat of magic 🤭
Honestly I really love demons who are based on real people because they have a certain scary charm to them and send a chill down my spine but still it's fascinating how sick people are represented in SMT.
@Smash 123 Messiah? What about him?He the representative of Jesus in Megaten.
Oh absolutely, the real people are more frightening than any monster or legend. Research for this video was some of the most difficult to read of any I've done before
@@Tony4You I can't even enter jack the ripper's Wikipedia page so it would be a pain to be searching for the nightstalker origins who I thought was just a regular demon based on basically every night stalker which is already terrifying by it self.
@Smash 123 There is Jesus in SMT Devil Summoner 1995 - Agony.
@Smash 123 Jesus is already in SMT though he's known as "Messiah" there. Muhammed will never be in SMT because even Atlus knows that depicting Mohamed in a visual format, especially as a "demon," will offend literally every Muslim on the planet and practically give them a death sentence from radical jihadists. South Park literally almost ended because they were planning a "Jesus VS Muhammad" episode that got so much backlash from Muslims in particular that they got like 30 major bomb threats from multiple major terrorist groups so they had to cancel the episode and put the show on hiatus for their own safety.
It’s so weird how Crowly’s life reads like an actual biblical story or parable-
A child of god that went astray, enough to be called the beast of revelations. But even to a man such as that, God would give another chance, sending an “Angel”. And once he took The Lord’s mercy, he was blessed with loyalty, family, and love. For himself, and for God.
Seriously, it sounds like an actual Bible verse.
It’s very similar to the story of the prodigal son
Indeed, his story really felts like a biblical story in such a way that i was like "WHAT" in the end
@@Zerorenren4761 sounds like he got humbled toward end
That one woman was more of a miracle worker than most of the stuff that Crowley preached.
Instruct a child in the way He should go and He will not depart from it when he is older. It was what I felt when knowing what happened to his Father. It was sad, but glad that it didn’t end in prosperity for him, but just as His Father wanted living simply as a family man in his old age. In truth all of it may have come from the simple fact that his father would speak blessings with his own mouth but fill the mouths of others with poison. I’d rather be dead at 12 and faithful to Him that made me then reform, but again He would have healed me. Like he did many others that became missionaries and preachers of that time. Wait for the woman that God chooses for you much sin is in the careless partaking of bodies.
The Crowley/Master Therion story was really interesting, but Night Stalker's real life influence was straight up disturbing
Crowley’s story is so much more fascinating than a certain other thing he’s inspired. “Normal summon effect?”
I would ash but you already have invocation
@@hamd8375 all the time :(
Who still normals Aleister in the year 2023?
@@syco7274so no ash?

Yoshitsune is actually based on real person as well, even if ancient historical hero rather than something more recent, his story is quite interesting too, Yoshitsune Minamoto played a crucial role in war between Minamoto and Taira clans he was extremely skilled swordsman and strategist and oftenly considered the only reason why his clan succeeded, he ended up betrayed by his brother and exiled since his brother feared that Yoshitsune can take power for himself, growing even more paranoid of now exiled Yoshitsune he send his troops after him which forced Yoshitsune and his family to commit seppuku, so yeah Yoshitsune is pretty interesting character with tragic backstory and the main reason why he is a demon in the series is because of the two legends about him, first states that he trained under tutelage of tengu and second says he took revenge on his brother from beyond the grave appearing before him as a ghost and causing him to fall from his horse
There are even more characters based on historical figures, such as Jeanne D’Arc, Saladin and Tokisada. I definitely missed out on more but I’d love to see it being discussed more, makes for interesting conversation
And of course his infamous eight boat leap (hassou tobi) as well. Probably the main reason why some believed he truly was trained under a tengu
@@snailthelostcow63the Tengu stories began when he was around 16 years old? If I recall? Before his induction into the Minamoto clan, he was training with monks in various disciplines. It was swordmanship he not only excelled at, but seemed too talented for his age. One version of the story goes that some monks were watching his training and asked each other "did you teach him how to do that?" "No," one replies, "I thought you were teaching him." "No. I thought you were."
Nobody seems to know who taught him his swordmanship specifically. If we go on a purely scientific route, he had a hard life and such children tend to become ultra-perceptive. It's likely he simply watched and mimicked what he saw, and since he was young with pliable bones, he created his own methods of fighting amalgamated from all the monks he observed.
But it was easier to ascribe the unknown to deities in that era. In a way, it's a bit sad that children are so looked-down upon that the only way it made sense for people was to say a demon trained him, because nobody could accept a child being better than them.
Don’t forget masakado
Wait, that's what his signature skill means.
I absolutely love this little sub-genre of demons because unlike other demons they could easily make more based on particular people like how SMT2 had a Texas chainsaw Demon. SMT Devil Summoner also had demons such as Hooligan and Rastaman and Patriot who are rather freaky but realistic considering how some people in real life, went from being obscure nobodies to prolific killers
And Terminator from SMT 2
Thanks for the support! The other real life demons are based on extreme ideas like the ones you mentioned, but they are still very interesting to think about yeah. Maybe I will make a follow up discussing them as well
@@Tony4You theres also crusader from smt1 pc edition
Rastaman iirc was based off the idea of lesser practiced religions being demonized, rather than implyng Rastafari's are dangerous individuals.
@@amelialonelyfart8848 It seems like none of you get how these games work. "Demons" aren't literal. It's just a catchall term. They aren't all intended to be evil things.
night stalker is horrifying. i thought he was goofy looking at first, but now i think my fight or flight response will go off when i see it next time.
Goes to show how much effort is put into the demons in the series. A seemingly throwaway demon like "bright man in suit" has a horrifying backstory
People who don’t recognize him will think he has supermodel features. People who do recognize him say “he got dem serial killer eyes”
Another bit about Crowley is that his Thoth tarot deck has seen representation in the Persona series, with the Aeon and Hunger/Lust Arcanas of P3 FES and 4 Golden.
I think I may have seen decks like that in New Orleans or something. I wanted to get it but never did.
Man this was fascinating, I feel like Nightstalker is an amalgamation of all the 80’s-90’s serial killers
A part of me was very disturbed yet fascinated and your voice made me want to stay till the end
Great vid
i almost noped out during the recounting of the real life crimes. that shit is pretty insane
I really appreciate the kind words.
I can see why true crime is interesting for a lot of people doing a video on it myself.
"Fascinating", sure
because the real nightstalker was the most 80s serial killer.
If I had a nickel for each time I see Aleister Crowley being depicted as monsters on one of my favorite monster franchises, I would had two nickels (Megaten with his appearances as himself and as Master Theron and Yugioh with Aleister the invoker and the “invoked” archetype) that’s not a lot, but it is funny that it happened twice.
3 times if you count the magistus! Crowley does appear there at a young age. It also shows him contacting with the, now fusion monster, Aiwass.
Aleister Crowley in A Certain Magical Index is also very mysterious, but his monstrosity is questionable, at least where I'm at in the series. At the very least, he plans on killing every magician and occultist in the world, so that's pretty monstrous
Fun fact: crowley also created the academy that appears in the spellbook/prophecy archetype. He appears as a link monster
Imagine if the next SMT game drops and you see Chris Chan appear as a demon💀

@@TheBrutalSax Sadly I can agree since I remember something about the sonic boom show making reference to chris-chan.
I’ve watched videos on Crowley before, but never knew he turned over a new leaf later on in life. That’s actually kinda nice to hear.
Yeah it was a nice twist to an awful story. Still a very interesting person though
Alaister Crowley had a huge influence in pop culture, specially the 60's counterculture. He's even depicted in the cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper.
If you tilt the cover in a certain way and mirror it, it creates a pyramids with Crowley at the top and also creates a penis and a vagina image.
I appreciate such dedication to researching the real world counterparts to some of the Demons here! I'm conflicted on Darkstalker now after hearing his meta lore, but his _drip_ is impeccable... Master/Crowly's segment was so fascinating, I forgot this was about SMT Demons, great work!
I have you to thank for getting me into this series, thanks!
Thanks for the kind words!
Ultimately my aim is to bring cool stories to light, the effort put into designing these demons is amazing.
You're telling me a satanistic mental case had a woman approach him but I don't
I feel that bro... The world is so unfair
I wish conception could happen irl.. then I could get cute pixie gf who cares about me
Woman love the bad boys…
time to satanmaxx bro
he looked cool in those sunglasses
As Richard Ramirez would describe it, Crowley's story is "fascinating"
I think you should've talked about Gotou from SMT1, since he was based on a real life Japanese extremist, trying to overthrow the government. There might also be other person's related to such in the series.
Oh that's interesting, I didn't even know about that! I'll look more into it
One of my favorite things in the whole SMT series is the descriptions of the demons/Personas/whatever so I always like stuff like this. I didn't even know those two demons in particular were based on actual people but it makes sense they'd pull demon ideas from everywhere possible even outside of the various myths, religions, etc. the more well known ones come from.
Man I wish Tony4You was Tony4Real
True...
I'm kind of surprised Mad Gasser wasn't in the vid, he's a personal favorite of mine, and based off of the *potentially* real Mad gasser of mattoon, illinois
I didn't now the bit about Crowley's son! Wow, the guy truly lived the Hero's Journey. He started as a preacher's son, started a religion that went against his upbringing, then eventually came back to his original beliefs in order to set a good example for his kid.
what’s weird is that i can’t find any evidence of crowley’s son anywhere else online. it just says he died in poverty and even tried to curse his doctor before his death
Thanks so much Tony for this video! I knew very little about Crowley other than the small bit Mr. Edogawa mentioned in P4, which was that he was an occultist and summoner. Please do consider covering more of these "real life" demons in a series.
This was really cool I never realized Aliester Crowley was referenced in Smt like that I remember first learning about him by mistake because I wanted to name a dnd character Aleister and wanted to figure out how to spell it and then I found down the rabbit hole with him. Funny enough the character I was making was also an occultist so it was funny how that all lined up without me knowing.
really fucking cool video Tony, if there are any more "real people demons" in smt, I would love to hear about them, your videos are really entertaining and sometimes fascinating
There's a lot more I left out for the sake of time, so I might make a follow up one of these days.
Thanks for watching and enjoying!
There are also Guan Yo and Jean D' arc, they are usually demons of Famed Race
The iconic Jack the Ripper
SMT is my favorite series. Despite all the monsters in video games, movies, anime etc.none of them hold a candle to real people. To me the scariest monsters are human beings.
Id love if you make this a series, it would be very interesting
There are plenty more demons based off real people so maybe I will make a follow up.
Thanks for watching!
good video, i'm expecting more like that. The details about crowley are more elaborated than many introdutory videos about him. It's aways good to see your essays!
Thanks a lot! I hope to make more like this at some point for sure
Tony, thanks so much for your SMT videos. I feel like I learn just as much from you as I do from Vaati in the Souls community.
Quite an honor to be compared to him! I appreciate you enjoying the vids
Ramirez was more complex, dude was totally crazy. Once while attacking a women he ripped the lamp out of the wall, the caused the bulb to break and sparks to fly out. Ramirez interpreted this as a message from god not to harm the women, so he left her alone.
Well he had literal brain damage.
Rameriz I think is the perfect example of a genuine schizo. The man had such a weird working belief system, but he was devoted to it.
As usual you always do fantastic work on these. Probably the best video on crowley without some kind of lunatics bias I've ever seen.
That's high praise, thanks a lot. I try to be as matter of fact as I can for these videos and I'm glad it comes across well
@@Tony4You it well deserved. I’m a small megaten creator with no editing ability lol. But out of all the guys in the community that I follow you consistently have some of the most interesting content I’ve seen. Your demon lore breakdowns are top notch definitely my favorite video type you do. I mean you are thorough AF, the Lucifer Satan and explanations of the differences was really well done. I hope you don’t burnout on it lol
disturbing yet fascinating, you've earned a new sub sir!
Much appreciated! Hope you'll like the backlog and the videos to come!
Mr Thriller / Micheal Jackson from SMT 2 - best ,,human'' demon
Shoutouts to SMT 2 full moon club
Wow, I really had no idea about those two's origins.....specially nightstalker, I thought he was just a generic psycho or something.
I already knew about the series borrowing from real life figures like Jeanne D'Arc, Cleopatra and so on; but never imagined that they would reference people like those 2.
It’s always such a treat to see a video of you’re get uploaded.
Keep up “The Lords Work”
😂😂
Well, to quote about serial killers:
"Demons are understandable. But humans... are just disgusting me"
- Samael, demons comedy
Would it be the descriptions of violent crime demonetizing the video, or Master Therion's big, uh, "king of wands?"
Great video, though. I'm totally onboard for more "demons inspired by real people" videos.
another exceptional video, always fun to learn more about a franchise i love. while richard ramirez was a horrible man, and the mere thoughts of his crimes sent shivers down my spine, there is an odd feeling of quaintness with Crowley. the man clearly was trying to achieve what he believed was true enlightenment through his own unique ways, chasing that ultimate high in hopes of reaching peak nirvana. it's just a shame that this quest of his was driven by selfishness, and all those he brought to ruin in his wake until he himself sunk to a deep low. still i can't help but to feel a sort of admiration towards the man, though i wouldn't say he's an admirable person if that makes any sense lol
Thanks a lot for the support.
The research for this video had to be trimmed a lot to avoid making people in the audience any more disturbed than they had to be.
Goes to show how horrible people really can be
Babe wake up, new Tony4You upload
Man you have a really good commentators voice. This video was great! Keep it up man, your in-depth analysis is always good.
Richard really was a scary looking dude
Great video
This is part of why I love SMT. While stories based in fantasy worlds have to establish their lore, since SMT is based in an alternate version of our own reality, understanding SMT lore helps understand real world lore and vice versa
Another fascinating video
Great video hoping for more
Damn, you're like a real scholar that's so cool
I wonder if Mad Gasser is also one... It feels like it could be based on a serial killer.
"Mad Gasser was inspired by the legend of the Mad Gasser of Mattoon, an urban myth that supposedly terrorized the small city of Mattoon, Illinois by spraying victims with an unidentified gas."
According to the SMT Wiki at least
He is! There were a lot I omitted for the sake of time in the video, but I might make a follow up in the future
@@Tony4You hey, if there's enough material for a second or even third installment, I can't be the only one who would be looking forward to it!
And I swear I'm a normal person and not a secret psychopath! 🤣
This channel is so underrated
I need more!
Great video! Didn't know about this stuff
The feedback has been great! I might make more of them
Yoooo, it's like that Podcast "Creepypasta as SMT demons" by Fither. Pretty cool
The house shown in the video belonged to Crowley and it's now an abandoned ruin in Sicily which some times hosts local raves, I guess his legacy lives on.
Crowley did all that and STILL lived to 72. Fuck dude, do really* drugs even shorten lives?
Jokes aside, that was an insanely interesting story and I thank you for sharing it.
I like the nightstalker accidentally nullifying his sacrifices to satan by branding them with the cross of st peter
I recently noticed how a lot of the Personas in Royal, namely the third tier ones, are based on real historical figures: Captain William Kidd, Célestine, Goemon/Gorokichi, Lucy...
What a cool video man, hope to see more of these if you make it a series or something ;)
People seem to enjoy the topic, which is surprising as many told me it was too niche lol. I am glad I can make more of this style
Impressive coverage, Richard Ramirez was neglected and groomed into a subhuman, but in all the criminal profile presentations none mentioned the little chinese girl. Crowley not much to say that I haven't researched already, did middle eastern black magik and was in league with the 8th sphere, his protege was Jack Parson whom was on auto pilot, auto assist.
Much appreciated! I believe real people deserve the best coverage possible. Especially in true crime I hope I gave a good amount of respect to everyone involved
Just started the video, I’m not sure if the mad gasser will pop up(sometime attributed to being a cryptid), but it’s gotta be my favorite. Looks cool and carried my ass for to zones in both of redux and the og Strange Journey.
He didn’t :( but it make sense. Fantastic work though!
There will be more parts to this series in the future potentially. Thanks for watching!
Great content
Hey thanks!
ooooooo new Tony4You vids :D
btw, i'm really enjoyed to hear each of your videos
your narrative and how to bring the topics and lore is just very interesing and great
i'm have 0 regret to give you a subscribe :')
Really appreciate it! I'm glad you enjoy the videos and hope to see you in the next ones to come
Funny that a philosophy of indulgence and hedonism would be ashamed of its founder for his indulgence and hedonism.
Covering up the bad parts of their lifestyle, even at the cost of their leader's life. What a strange group
@@Tony4You they needed to change their motto to "Do what thou wilt, but always have a designated driver."
As a true crime and history enthusiast, I love how you post true lore behind games. That is rare content indeed. Feed me more!!!!!!! Lol
Really appreciate it! I really like this type of stuff too
Great stuff! I'd be really interested to see if there are more than those two who wound up inspiring the demons of SMT. I knew of Crowley, and though I haven't read The Book of Law, I liked Moonchild well enough. I didn't realize Crowley's life had that kind of a redemption period.
Also True Crime gets interest because it's...well to use the Nightstalker's words "Fascinating". Hearing about how absurd or dark a case is compared to the viewer's normal life almost feels like you are watching fiction...but it's real. It doubles into horror, of course, and can even dip into a thriller if the cases were unsolved.
I like watching commentated Police Interrogations, Forensic Files, and the occasional documentary. Though I can get exactly why the subject matter is too dark or too disgusting for some. I tried to explain it, but I probably did a bad job.
Aleister Crowley actually turned his life around and even got something like redemption?! I had no odea. That's actually uplifting to hear. Plus, this Aleister ended up better than the one in Toaru franchise😂
Interesting that Crowley actually looked up to his father as a child.
Interesting stuff.
Beautiful vid but still waiting for that Ars Goetia vid,
Thanks a lot! That video is coming soon I hope. The script has been done for a while, but editing it is rough
Awesome episode. It's crazy to think of how demonic humans can be
Research for this video unnerved me more than any other I've done so far
@@Tony4You The Richard Ramirez stuff is horrific. Definitely scarred me. I don't recommend looking up the stories or watching documentaries about him.
You’re a Tony4You fan that watches every video? Well I’m a Tony4You fan that never skips the ads. We are not the same.
😁👏👏👏pretty good video, like they said say facts are stranger than fiction, maybe you can make a series of this, like real demons based on real people it would be a very interesting topic.
Had to watch twice since it's been a while, commenting for the algorithm
Both much appreciated! See you in the next video too hopefully
Wow! Awesome job! Is this one of, or you'll make series out of this.
wake up babe, new tony4you
Would absolutely love a follow up to this one talking about other demons based off of people like Jack the ripper. I always saw Nightstalker as a throwaway demon until now
This was an amazing video. Is there anymore real life figures in SMT that you could cover?
Would love to see a video about the personas inspired by real people as well, like Caesar from P3 and Captain Kidd from P5!
I already basically did that with my Meaning Behind the Persona series lol. I think it's a good idea too
I kind of had an idea of what kind of person darkstalker would be based on. But the master????? His story is such a rollercoaster of emotions. Damn
Wish there was at least one more demon in the video though.
There are many more demons I had to cut for time, but maybe I will make a follow-up since they are all so interesting
@@Tony4You deeeffffinitely follow up!!!! It's really cool and interesting! Good job!

It is incredible and terrifying to learn that there were creatures inspired by real people.
i love these lore videos
Personally think it's hilarious they actually made Rasputin a main villain for the first Raidou game lol
Loved learning about Crowley. I was surprised that Jack the Ripper from SMT IV did not make the list but since most people know his story it makes sense.
There's already a video covering the Jack Bros.
@@aerth6946 fair enough i admit i am not caught up on all the videos so i will check it out
Jack the Ripper wasn't a real person. He was a government coverup.

That psycho isn't nearly as obese as the average Reddit atheist/edgelord.

I was expecting you to mention Mad Gasser
This is pretty interesting video, as usual. Sorry for asking, but what a cover of Tokyo playing in the Intro? It sounds awesome.
Wait, shouldn't Robin Hood have been covered in this video? Although there may never have been one true Robin Hood, the tale is based on real actual people.
Make this a series
Definitely Alistair Crowley. Look up the picture he drew of the demon named Lam that he supposedly summoned.
10:13 "...which is a book I actually own and have read."
Least surprising Law fan lol
That one relative of Crowley who proceeded to try and help him. But then introduce him to those activities. Like I understand he thought he had limited time left. But I still think it was a dumb decision. It might have kept him from passing on. But it lead to so many other issues.
True evil never resided in the realm of "fiction"
This video was pretty interesting I'd like to see more vids like this.
Interestingly enough, my criminal investigation professor actually happens to be the officer that got the prints from Richard Ramirez’s torched car, if i’m not mistaken. It seems hard to believe for me just because of where I live.
Thee story of Richard Ramirez becoming "fascinated" by tales of atrocities being committed by his cousin sounds very similar to the Death Gun story in Sword Art Online, I almost wonder if it was an inspiration. Even the voyeurism angle is present, with the younger brother in the Death Gun duo frequently peeping on the focal character of that story arc, who he has a crush on, and attempts to assault her as well...
"Death Gun" is the dumbest fucking name I've heard in my life.
"Let's not look at that shadow!"
Too late. :O
If you grasp the point of Persona and their use, this makes hella sense.
