I grew up watching Heartbeat as a kid.. I Loved Nick and Kate they were my favorite characters... I've got the first and second series on dvd. i also love watching the re-runs on itv 3. Still cry all the time when i watch the episode Thief In The night where Kate dies. The First 5 series where the best.
Nick and Kate where my favourate characters, I grew up watching them and cried so much when Kate died, It was not the same after that. I stopped watching it now, well I watch the original re runs with Nick and Kate
Who remembers Heartbeat originally airing on a Friday night then changing to a Sunday night? I LOVED Heartbeat when Nick Berry was on it! Still a gorgeous man these days too
This show is new to me and I have fallen in love with the Kate and Nick couple. She has such soulful eyes and beautiful demeanor and he has a perpetual good-natured smile. They are so deeply and nobly in love and they help folks in their charm-filled community at a drop of a hat. But now I see she will die and I wish I could rewrite their story and keep them together in the fictional world forever. The thought of her dying makes me cry.
They were a great couple, but sadly people like that don't exist in the real world. You don't see couples like that in the UK. Heartbeat was a fantastic show, though looking back it was corny and not realistic even for the 60s.
I’ve come back after watching Thief In The Night thinking the show should have been called Heartbreak. Having lost a loved one myself, I could only marvel at the spot on in-depth portrayals from everyone, in large part due to the behind the scenes people (directors, writers and editors) who put together the perfect elements to express sorrow, anger and the small window of light through it all. The red dress in the closet where Nick buries his head and Kate, the heart of the show, whose entire being is a vehicle for every emotion. Sorry you had to go Niamh Cusack but bravo, bravo on striking the most genuine of tones.
@katiemay14: I know, its made even sadder by the soundtrack of Cat Stevens' 1971 hit "How can I tell You" as well. The soundtracks were always great in this series.
Nick and Kate were my favourite characters! These are the episodes I grew up on! Loved this show! Wish they would release the earlier episodes onto DVD!
They were the best, a believable (well for a TV series that is lol) couple who had alot of chemistry. Pity when Kate died and Nick met Jo it wasn't the same, to me Jo didn't suit Nick one bit, I couldn't imagine them together in real life and there were too many awquard moments. The woman who played Nick's mum was a bad choice IMO, having someone with her personality be his mum just didn't feel right when Nick was a shy and quiet person and his mum was like a cockney bimbo Barbara Windsor type lol. They should've had her be like him.
Sadly I've only just come across this great TV show on BritBox and they're only showing Season 1 and 18 and nothing in between. Sure would love to see ALL the episodes. Love the episodes with Nick and Kate and not a fan of the new episodes in series 18.
Greatly missed series. People will never admit it, but this is what most of us wish life was like now, like it was in the 60s. I agree that Heartbeat was never the same after Nick left, and in a way after Kate died. It was part of what the show was about - the police and doctor storyline. It's also ashame that alot of the characters from the 1st series were never brought back in it again, for instance, Alan & Sandra Maskel; I thought they were a great couple and very realistic characters; alot of other characters who had potential could've reprised their roles but were sadly never seen again. HB became 'dumbed down' in the later Nick series & subsequent Bradley series, and slowly drifted off into Last of the Summer Wine country by its very last series; the stupid comedy elements & stereotyped 1960s cliches ruined the series imo.
systemanic totally agree with you on every point you made and so would every heartbeat fan, series 10 I think was the straw that broke the camels back😡😡 3 major characters left Bill Maynard. Fiona Dolman and kazia pelka what a loss especially Maynard
Totally agree. There was something sweet and pure about the Kate and Nick episodes especially the first 3 series before all that Whitby stuff ruined their marriage and then the sad stuff that came after. I must have first noticed Heartbeat as a kid in the late 90s during the later Nick years (without Kate) then Bradley/Craddock period. I never thought much of it but it was always there on a sunday night and I think I had the awareness that it was decent (with Nick or Bradley) and then gradually got worse and stopped watching it in the 2000s. Seeing the reruns recently of the first few years you realise how good it was in the early 90s. How much the show was focussed on the Rowans as a couple and worked around their screen presence which I don't think even the producers bothered to try to properly recapture later on instead moving to daft characters around the village. If it had only lasted till the mid-late 90s it would be remembered as one of the best British tv shows ever and not just some watered down nostalgia
I agree, and yes although I wasn't born until the 70s It was a time so different to now,no Internet, no mobile phones, you could be yourself without fear of it being recorded, summers with nothing much to do yet the days were filled with fun,and a quick visit to the dinner table and back out again....a time when we appreciated what we got, which was little for most...sad to see the mess the world has become 😢
I was watching heartbeat this sunday just gone by on Itv encore. It was the one with Paul Bown (the guy out of Watching) playing a Russian sailor who thinks he's killed his captain. I think the music contributed heavily to the series like in that episode when they are looking for the school kids and the Russian sailor is wondering around the moors with the Beach Boys Sloop John B playing over it. The music added to the scenes.
No doubt that song has likely been replaced for the DVD version or some other streaming or country channel broadcast. I've seen a couple of different version of the some of the early series episodes on youtube, some from the DVD releases, some from a channel called Filmrise (which must be a U.S streaming site) and some from an unknown channel broadcast (which I don't think is ITV3) and each of e use different songs. One of the best choice of songs in Heartbeat has to be Nights in White Satin during the foot and mouth episode Bitter Harvest. Another excellent choice of a song in an Heartbeat episode would be Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan for series 5 ep Toss Up during the car crash scene, perfectly suited the scene very well, but sadly some versions of the ep have changed the song to Tobacco Road by Status Quo, but thankfully the DVD version has Like a Rolling Stone.
also wondered if it would be possible if someone could some how put up the full episode of Thief In The Night (the episode when Kate dies) because i was going to watch it on ITV 3 this morning but it was on to early and i really want to watch it again as i haven't since it was first shown in 1995
yer any chance of that episode and other classic episodes in full being uploaded onto here please. Was going to get the dvd's but it will cost a lot to buy them all
I was reading a Wikipedia article on Heartbeat (I know it's not the most accurate of sources on the net), and in it it mentioned this that I've never heard of before: "In 1994 a one-off feature-length episode was filmed, starring Lloyd Owen as constable Tom Merriweather." what?, is this true? because if so then this is the first time I've ever heard of it. As far as I know there has never been any 'one-off' feature-length episode of Heartbeat, especially from 1994. I have certainly never seen this episode, unless of course it was filmed/planned but never made it to the air?. I looked up the actors name and is there is no mention of Heartbeat in his filmography.
What is the name of the episode featured in this montage where Kate is cleaning Nick's head wound? I don't think I ever saw that one. I know he has a similar experience in Season Two's 'Manhunt', but that wound is on his forehead, not the back of his head. Thanks!
I thought Geoffrey Hughes, RIP, was great as well as was CJ Greengrass so many of you seem to like Greengrass better because he was the original. I first saw Heartbeat halfway through so never saw Greengrass till later on. Geoffrey Hughes tore me up, as well as on KUA too.
Bruce Walker no way you could compare Geoffrey Hughes to be as good as Greengrass in heartbeat, I found Hughes to be very irritating to be honest as did a lot of other people the roll didn't suit him because he had big shoes to fill after Greengrass. Hughes was fantastic in Royle family and keeping up appearances.
Well taken, thanks for commenting, Greengrass was awesome. Vernon happened to be the main comedy of the show, when I first fell in love with Heartbeat, and I thought he was awesome too. I guess we all miss the show, but there are so many years of reruns it is ok. No show can go on forever.
Is there a real actual song or it`s just a short sound track made for the show, I would love to have it, please tell me if there is and what is the name of it :) ty
codyterrier I think Niamh Cusack wanted to leave as she'd recently given birth her self in real life and wanted to be with her child. And I think the writer's felt them getting a divorce wasn't a good story line as they were such a good couple.
@@Yorkshirefreckles Tragic storylines are used (deliberately I would say) to tug at the heartstrings of the (mostly) unquestioning masses who don't look beyond what they see and hear on TV thinking what they see is real, especially when it comes to health issues.
When Kate left the series slightly started to go downhill once Nick left, the series became shitty with the lead role changing every two series. Series should have been simply about the rowan's should have ended when Nick had left.
CoolBoysBackYard I don't agree with you. I love lots of the charachters who came after. Ofcourse it was sad when Kate died. I cried a million tears when it happened, but the show must go on!

God, the intro song brings so much childhood nostalgia :-(

Bec4235 You should continue watching. lots of nice persons have come after.

OMG! That episode when she dies is sooo sad and heart braking! I cry everytime I watch it! :(
@katiemay14: I know, its made even sadder by the soundtrack of Cat Stevens' 1971 hit "How can I tell You" as well. The soundtracks were always great in this series.
Those episodes were the best. After Nick and Kate and Oscar it wasn't the same
When he says "my brother works on casualty" I laughed. As that's where David WICKS went.
Nick and Kate were my favourite characters! These are the episodes I grew up on! Loved this show! Wish they would release the earlier episodes onto DVD!

I want to see the episodes with their daughters birth again. They were so beautiful and sad at the same time.
All I can say is that they where amazing the Rowan years
i remember watching this
Niamh Cusack seriously fit in this

totally agree, it was better when rowan, kate and George (landlord) were there plus greengrass and blaketon, the later series are crap.
systemanic totally agree with you on every point you made and so would every heartbeat fan, series 10 I think was the straw that broke the camels back😡😡 3 major characters left Bill Maynard. Fiona Dolman and kazia pelka what a loss especially Maynard

just found out Nick Berry - Heartbeat is the song I was looking for
I was watching heartbeat this sunday just gone by on Itv encore. It was the one with Paul Bown (the guy out of Watching) playing a Russian sailor who thinks he's killed his captain. Who doesn't know it, the theme song was a Buddy Holly song.
Bruce Walker Yes...... I prefer the Nick Berry version. With all respect. R.I.P Buddy Holly.
any chance any one can put some of the early episodes on here in full. in particular the Baby Blues episode
Which episodes do the clips of Nick and that guy called Alex in the cold, and the one where Kate is tending to his head?
also wondered if it would be possible if someone could some how put up the full episode of Thief In The Night (the episode when Kate dies) because i was going to watch it on ITV 3 this morning but it was on to early and i really want to watch it again as i haven't since it was first shown in 1995

any chance of that episode being uploaded onto youtube as well as Baby Blues and Going Home
I like heartbeat
@CoolBoysBackYard.... I watch the serie in Holland. Kate is dead now en Nick is gone withe his new wife. It,s not the same without Nick and Kate.....
Where can I find the early seasons,
@nath909 ...I think it was the very first episode of Series 1
Got any clips from the 'changing places' episode, the one in canada? Not seen it for donks

Can anyone tell me the song used at 1:36?
Which season and episode died Nick?
These were the best episodes of the entire series. But Heartbeat has really gone downhill to the point where it may get axed

Marie Stevens the episode is called fathers day. He gets hit over the head with a spade.
To be honest the series should have ended once Nick left it wasn't the same without him, never watched it once he left.
CoolBoysBackYard I agree. I always said that. People think in mad

StumbriniuRecords if you type in heartbeat sound track on things like eBay and Amazon you should find loads of them
StumbriniuRecords its heartbeat by buddy holly also recorded and released by nick berry for the show
I perfer the original cast with Nick, Kate, Greengrass, Sgt Blaketon, George and Alex
Why do they have to ruin a happy couple on tv,nick and kate was the happest couple ever..........
codyterrier I think Niamh Cusack wanted to leave as she'd recently given birth her self in real life and wanted to be with her child. And I think the writer's felt them getting a divorce wasn't a good story line as they were such a good couple.

Nick Berry, making women's knickers wet from 1992 until 1998 🩲💦
