  • The start to 2023 and Gila Monster Outdoors heads out to Southern New Mexico to pursue desert mule deer. After a long hard fought January hunt last year, and not having many opportunities; the team decided to explore new units this year and find better hunting areas. In this video, Nick is still trying to get his chance to fill his first ever mule deer tag.
    In southern New Mexico, there are a couple different deer seasons offered every year in the state's draw system. This hunt is archery only and tries to highlight the rut in New Mexico. The team has been interested in archery hunting for some time now and nothing is better for our experience than going out and finding opportunities like this one.
    On this hunt, Nick was able to fill his first tag, despite being in a new unit and having to endure unpredictable and unexpected weather conditions. Hunting mule deer in January can be full of unexpected obstacles and weather conditions. Nick and Cody were able to fight through adversity and harvest an awesome nine point muley.

    Great Video! I hope you guys had success in this years draw. Do you have any advice on locating bucks? I have never even had a chance to see one on my previous hunts! I've hiked a lot and just seem to find alot of Does!

      Thanks for watching. It depends on the hunt. Early seasons can be great for hunting around water. This hunt was during the rut, and if you’re finding does the bucks are usually with them or nearby. Any other time usually involves a lot of glassing in areas with good bedding spots and feed or water nearby. We find it best to get to vantage points early in the morning and late in the evenings to spot them as they’re moving!

    Nice desert buck, thats some well earned meat right there. Everyonce in awhile they get some neat character bucks to. Found the holy grail one time of a fresh brown set of 6 by 7 desert mule deer sheds one time. Get any hunts for this year?

      It’s surreal to get your first ever muley with a bow. Nick definitely worked hard for this buck. Thankfully we drew a few deer tags this year! We will also be going on some hunts with family and friends to help out and also get everyone more content! Thank you for watching!

    What unit is this?

    • @gilamonsteroutdoors
      @gilamonsteroutdoors  Před rokem

      We are not gatekeepers of units and are happy to point hunters in the right direction if they are asking about hunting areas. However, we do not like to discuss hunting units and areas on open platforms with so many people on the internet. Other pages and platforms have received negative feedback when disclosing units and we want to avoid exposing a hunter’s time and dedication in the field! Feel free to message us on Facebook or Instagram if you have any questions about hunting these awesome desert mule deer!

      We were hoping to pull a Gila september deer tag! This hunt was not in the Gila. We have seen some nice bucks in the Gila during our archery elk hunts. We will be scouting for elk this summer in the Gila and would be happy to help you find some solid areas to try out!

      Thank you for watching! We just started doing our own bow work this past season, so we are working on peep tying. We have considered a peep-less setup and may try it this year!

      @@gilamonsteroutdoors for sure... Great video, I enjoyed it. Try peepless, the old retina lock iq bowsight provide that added anchor, I use my lip, nose, and the retina lock sight. I used to shoot with a regular sight though and I did just fine.
