India-Pakistan conflict: A ticking time bomb? | DW Analysis

  • In February 2021, India and Pakistan agreed to strictly observe all previous agreements on ceasefire along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and other sectors, and to address core issues and concerns. It was their first joint statement in over eight years. But will the agreement be upheld this time? Both countries have come close to an all-out military conflict several times in the past two decades. DW takes a look at factors that are driving the hostility between the two South Asian neighbors.

@Nicholas P In India we also use the same terminology but for people who are in India but not Indian citizens.
Especially when we are trying to explain fundamental rights which are available not available to non Indian(alien, whether legal or illegal). Example Freedom to move through out territory of India is available to Indian citizen but not aliens.
Freedom of religion, against unlawful arrest etc are availalbe to both.

Imagine what the money spent on this conflict could have done to develop Indian technology. This situation is similar to Ireland war with British for many years. Britain ended this conflict by changes of mindset from a occupying force to one of equals by allowing Sinn Fein to run for public office. Today Sinn Fein is a legitimate party in Ireland and no longer a terrorist organization. This change has enabled Ireland to develop economically at a rapid pace and Britain no longer have bombs going of in London . Oppression will breed discontent and violence. @RIDHWAN SAMEJA British India was the area of India in South Asia which for hundreds of years was under the influence of the English (later the British). From the 1600s until 1858 these areas were run by the English East India Company. After 1858 until 1947 they became the British Raj. Some areas were under the direct rule of the Governor-General of India. He was appointed by the Government of the United Kingdom in London, and was a Viceroy, meaning, the deputy of Queen Victoria.
After 1876 when Queen Victoria become Empress of India, British India was part of the British Indian Empire, which also included hundreds of Indian princely states which had never been conquered by the British and still had control of their own affairs. These were each ruled by local rulers under the protection of the British. These states had almost half the land and a quarter of the people of the British Indian Empire. This empire is sometimes called the British Raj.
British India included the regions of the present-day People's Republic of Bangladesh, Republic of India, Burma and Pakistan (1858-13th August 1947).

If Kashmir can't be fully resolved. At least some ease of visa/travelling can be introduced for Kashmiris on both sides. Pakistani Kashmir is semi autonomous. India can allow their Kashmir to decide their own rules. Once families can see each other and armed rebellion on Indian side settles the attacks carried out by kashmiris, that always get blamed on Pakistan will end. The region may start to prosper without changing any borders.

India and Pakistan are surely the only two democratic states going at each other? I can't think anyone else
They are sort of breaking the rule that had been working for decades, democracies don't wage war against each other.
EDIT: I educated myself with the democracy index, and Pakistan isn't even a counted as a democracy, but a Hybrid regime. Thus the rule still stands! Nice to have some order in the world.

Normal Indians do not even think of Pakistan on daily basis. yes, there was a time when a time when we were afraid of a war with Pakistan. Now we think of Pakistan only when terrorists attack. Pakistan is a nuisance neighbour which we believe will self destruct or become colonial vestiture of China. We consider China as adversary not just militarily but economically, politically, diplomatically. China is years ahead of us in terms of infrastructure development and we have some catching up to do and we are doing it in lightning speed even with Wuhan virus unleashed on the world. India-Pakistan war if happens (I hope it does not for soldiers of both countries sake) we are sure that Indian soldiers can handle it well.

I don’t know if there will be peace ever in between two countries but I always pray for that.
I get your point but you need to understand that they are normal people like us as well who are been provoked by their leaders and filled with hatred for their political career.
Why do you think Modi never talks about climate change, investing in cleaner and greener energy, investing in education to educate people about civic and sexual knowledge, bring laws on reservation where SC/ST take all the advantage and the actual real talents are overlooked.?
Because they know if they do this there political career is at threat.
Surgical strike, Article 370 and what not this are all politics stunts this guys play to fool and mindwash the people of India and luckily they succeed in doing this because not all are educated.
I know my wishes can never reach there but there’s no harm to believe right.?
