Update: I have removed the section on linear rail adjustments. so as not to encourage the tuning of the gantry. please reach out to Carbide3D if you have any alignment issues.
    Be safe and have fun!

A friend recently mentioned using the feeler gages as shims for his X axis. Super simple idea and since they come in various thicknesses, might be a good option for getting that 5thou out of your X.

thanks, I ended up purchasing some 0.0005 shim stock from mcmaster-carr to level out the table.

I'd love to see you talk through more example specific projects you made with the HDM!

Thanks for a great video series on the Shapeoko HDM! Have you ever measured the level of accuracy/repeatability or backlash that you are able to achieve with the HDM machine? I'm trying to decide between the HDM and the StepCraft m1000. Thanks in advance for any information.

Can we get a video on how to build the pneumatic solenoid? Also, do you have an thoughts towards quality/ready to use between this model and the pro? I know you did significantly more modifications to the pro but would be interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Thanks for the great content! Your amazon link points us to a 500w 100 ohm braking resistor, but in the video you refer to and it looks like it's a 300w 250 ohm part. Do you recommend to upgrade to the 500w unit instead?

      I have updated the link.

What is the Make/model of the VFD on the Shapeoko HDM? I would like to look up the details on the dry contact.
BTW: I am thinking of using the dry contact to drive a delay-off relay that will drive the chiller. When the spindle starts the chiller will start. After the spindle stops, the chiller will keep going for 20 or 30 seconds. I will also have a 2nd relay that will turn the dust collection on/off but with a much shorter delay.
I am still thinking about how to incorporate an error warning light/buzzer for the chiller as well as the automated control above.

my light stack has a warning light and buzzer.
spindle is oem branded by carbide3d, im sure they worked with someone to white label these.

I was looking at the SMW plates for my HDM but the 80% coverage was a deal breaker for me. This looked like a proper solution. I'm now wondering if SMW will start to offer this option without the trouble of custom ordering.

Not sure, you can always request the three plate option that David from diy.engineering ordered. ;)

Just to clear up one detail, the HDM has a travel area of 690mm X 535mm and the double SMW plate setup has a coverage area of 660mm X 610mm. That being said, the triple plate setup is looking great!

@@vinceramirez4463 I know this is two years later but for anyone new here it looks like SMW now offer the three plate design without having to make a special request.

How do I get into the VFD settings to change the torque boost?

Is the resistor safe to be uncovered and terminals exposed? I thought it generates a high DC voltage when stopping.

I've worked on several CNC machine tools from different manufacturers, but I'd never even seen a CNC without a physical brake on the spindle until watching CZcams videos of hobbyist grade machines. It's really dangerous to work on a machine with a spindle that does not lock on loss of power (such as when the emergency stop button is pressed) or G-code commands such as M02, M06, or M25 are processed.

    • @DIYEngineering

no consumer grade machines have brakes. if you think this is crazy, you should check out my upgrades to an ATC spindle... be safe, have fun

@@DIYEngineering Thankfully the consumer grade spindles are nowhere near as complex and expensive as commercial ones. The spindles on my last commercial CNC's cost around $30,000 to replace. I learned this the hard way when an experienced operator made a newbie mistake and wrecked the machine.
