Hey! This is my professor! She's a wonderful woman and an awesome animator. Crazy thankful to have had her as a teacher, its always so funny to see how often I encounter her work in the wild.
Lucky!
I'm a simple woman, I see In Praise of Shadows upload, I click and like. And then I proceed to binge his entire backlog x3
A tradition as old as time itself
I used to be this way, some of his videos lack a level of media literacy and often come off as moral grandstanding. Still entertainingly long time burners though
@@ricardoquiroz4938Time is apparently only 5 years old.
Oh you're trans...
Awwww cultured haha
Her words on making art while trying to live is so real. Literally every word was a struggle I've felt and it's kind of healing to hear another woman speak those words.
Thanks for bringing her work to light for me
Phil Tippett's Mad God best be on the menu. Took the man 30 years to complete.
As a one-woman stop-motion animator and horror fan, this is inspiring and exciting! Her description of her work process is highly relatable. My projects can take years (never as long as 13 years, though), but I think I'm able to stay with these projects for so long because I'm using them to process my own experiences, much like you described with the live-action film at the end. I also enjoy the feeling of creating magic and being something like the god of my own universe. From wire and felt I can create the illusion of a living entity and from a series of images I create the illusion of life, movement and time. I think stop-motion animation gives artists freedom to express epic visions without a movie-size budget.
this hits me in a personal way. ive been writing a novel series for about 20 years now, with no real progress being made until this year when i decided to complicate the project by making it an audiobook. all made by me, editing (both audio and literarily), writing, narrating, voice directing, recording, foley, and ive found it to be very very fun. HOPEFULLY ill have the "demo" of the first 3 chapters done and on bandcamp and/or kickstarter later this year.
its taken me so long because i have very serious depression, and some kind of anxiety disorder that causes me to burn myself out and have to take days if not weeks off doing nothing to recharge so i can get back at it, as well as ADHD, in which case its incredibly difficult for me to do certain tasks sometimes, as well as list of unhealthy trauma based coping mechanisms that ive had to overcome on the way. i just want to get my story done, so i can move on the the next book, but its takes me so long to get any of it done its exhausting.
so just to see creatives who struggle, but still push through and accomplish their vision despite everything is inspiring. so thank YOU, for the hours and days it takes you to make these videos, and thank you for choosing this artist/subject/medium, to talk about. its helped me in both my personal journey, and also in discovering more art to love
That’s wild, 20 years, that’s older than a lot of people. I admire your dedication to stick with it, I also relate to the sentiment. You deeply want to keep creating but depression just doesn’t work like that.
You got this!
So happy to see Blood Tea and Red String being covered by you!
Same! I watched this movie for the first time for Halloween last year and I fell in love with it. I can’t wait for Christiane’s next movie, Seed in the Sand!
I saw this at the Pioneer Theater (RIP) when it came out. It left me a little conflicted: so much of the acclaim at the time was around the length and isolation of the effort. I'm an artist who works alone and believes in the value of personal process (in contrast to Damien Hurst or Jeff Koons), but the nature of film almost demands collaboration. This video helps me reevaluate that 14 year-old viewing and I'm looking forward to the follow-up effort.
Omg!! My favorite horror discussion channel talking about my favorite indie film maker?? Nothing could've made my day faster! I've legit written 4 papers about Cegavske's work, I'm so glad you're giving it some coverage!
I absolutely adore Cegavske and would love to read your stuff if that’s cool!
i don know if you feel comfortable sharing yourself in a public space but if you do i personally would be quite keen if you'd post your work ^^
"Film is a collaborative medium" is a phrase that live action people and big studios love to throw out there as if it was impossible for one person to do it all. As if in filmmaking you HAVE to concede and accept others ideas to make it work. Because film is so overwhelming and spans so many art forms that no one person can do it alone. This is wrong. There is more than one way to skin a cat (old proverb). In animation, with enough drive, if you want to make something happen, you can. Only time can stop you, or the lack of it.
Robert Rodriguez wrote a great book about doing his first movie alone.
As an artist this gave me so much inspiration. Thank you for giving her a platform, she's so talented and if she ever engages in a kickstarter I will be the first to jump on it.
Damn. Wasn't expecting the Stopmotion spoilers and then it was too late. 😢
Yeah I feel her struggles. As of now, I'm writing a script, tackling art projects, chores and a social life all while looking for work as a storyboard artist which that in itself is an awful struggle at the moment... But she never gave up so that motivates me to keep going. Thank you for making this Zane ♥
I got such a jump of excitement when you brought up Paperhouse. One of the most underrated horror film about childhood I've ever seen!
THIS is crazy... I just "discovered" this film last month and watched it, I'm so happy you made this doc!
FINALLY someone talking about this film!
I love the idea of this series. And I was so happy to hear Tangomushi! She is another excellent creator, and a collaboration between you two, even just adding a voice, is amazing.
I’ve loved this film for a log time, but never known anything about it, except that she made it by herself and how long it took. Incredible. Robert Morgan and Stopmotion, too. I can’t wait to see your other focuses of passion projects
As a person doing a somewhat, kinda complex art project all by myself, I’m fascinated by stories of artists taking on these monumental artworks alone. It’s both inspiring and also makes you wonder if you would do that kind of stuff in the name of art and legacy and whatnot. It’s a great video and can’t wait to see the others on the series.
Lol,you just described me.
I have an art/music channel called -Will•∆lone-
I run a art/music channel called -Will∆lone-.
I didn't know that the film took so long. I watched it a couple of years ago and was enthralled.
A good novel to read during these upcoming video projects is Antkind by Charlie Kaufman, which is also about a decades long stop motion animation project (If you havent't read it already)
It’s my birthday today and this is a wonderful present.
Happy birthday!
Unrelated but I love your thumbnails, they're a piece of art that really gets me excited for the video when i can finally watch
Blood String brings back happy memories of the stopmotion kids show Bagpuss reminds me alot of that shows storytelling segments
Oh my god it's one of my fave movies even if it bores me at times. Truly a unique experience
New In Praise of Shadows let's gooooo 😤
Merchandising! Have a company make 3" figures of those white fur bird people and the black fur goat ones. Like make these licensed characters and aside from the figures the image could be put on shirts and stickers - but very limited art for the apparel. The proceeds from all these can go to fund her studio and ongoing projects. It could be used as swag during crowdfunding campaigns. And whatever. I hope someone has suggested some of these things to her if she isn't doing some kind of merch already. The other two figures I would choose are the main foxbirds from Tea, as well as the Mice in the red...Beefeater suits? They look cool and cute. So four figures to collect.
This video got me to watch Blood Tea & Red String and now it's one of my favorite movies ever so thank you for introducing me to it!
Every time you come out with a video on something more obscure like this, it's always the most beautiful and artistic works! Thank you for drawing attention to artists like this and for filling up my watchlist.
stunning work. amazing artist.
edit: it's on CZcams.
Your project is absolutely amazing and one of the best channel names I have ever heard keep it up!
Amazing video, thrilled for the next one. I will definitely check out the artists and their work. Thank you so much for your work!
So happy to hear you talking about this masterpiece!
I love that your (newer) intro already feels nostalgic. Like every time I was a new video I hum along with it and it feels like I’ve been hearing it for years
Amazing video, excited for the rest of this series!
These are my favorite kinds of videos you make. I look forward to more
I am thankful you introduced me to this film! Paused the vid within a minute and went and watched it before returning, and I'm really happy I did!
Thank you for sharing about this amazing artist. She’s so talented and I’m excited to see what she’s posted online and present in her works.
was not expecting one of my favourite movies to be covered by one of my favorite channels ♡
Fantastic! Very much reminds me of Jan Svankmeyer. What brilliance, and such skill in this passionate undertaking.
One of the best channels on CZcams, so happy to have it.
I can't wait to see more of your Videos in this Series. I love you retrospectives on movies.
Inspired topic choice. Already watched this though multiple times and I’m still struck by the content and visuals. Bravo.
Loved it and can’t wait to see who and what else you include in this project!
Thanks for another great video, im excited to see the other ones in this series 😁
Late to the party but never missing an invite from this channel. I've been meaning to watch this for a while so this will be the impetus I need. Always an interesting review, always an interesting film, always those sultry tones, great channel.
Thank you for highlighting this wonderful artist
You have such a way with words. Looking forward to what's to come 👍
Ok just watched this and what a lovely film. I decided to watch it before continuing your video to avoid any spoilers, but thank you so much for bringing this film to my attention. Really looking forward to Seed in the Sand.
Love seeing you praise this awesome movie
Been working on an epic multiform playfully experimental 2-volume 60-chapter literary autobiography for about-14 years now with the first volume nearly completed, so this really resonated with me.
I can’t believe I never heard about her before, thanks for spotlighting her!
Always glad to see you pop up again. Thank you for your work getting this ol' lug to sleep
I love your video on Strangehaven - as someone who makes comics it touched me very deeply. I’m looking forward to this series!
Her work looks so much like Jan Svankmeyer. Absolutely brilliant. 💜
Thank you for introducing me to this incredible artist!
Thanks so much for this video! Beautiful, inspiring and terrifying
Never heard of this movie before and after this will definitely give it a watch. Great video and good pick to have Tangomushi voice the quotes, she's giga Pog.
My favorite stop animation movie ❤. So happy to see this video this morning ❤
Great video, can't wait for the next one!
Thank you for sharing this
AH! I'm so excited to see you cover this film! I have no idea what you have in store for the rest of this series, but if you haven't already checked out the work of Yuri Nostein and Francheska Yarbusova I highly recommend it. They're truly some of the most talented stop-motion creators of our time, and even though they don't exactly make horror content, much of their body of work takes on a similarly whimsical darkness that Blood Tea and Red Sting does. Atrocity Guide has an incredible video on them, though I expect a lot of people here maybe already know that. I can't wait to see what creators you introduce us to next!
Omg i was just thinking about your channel while walking my dogs yesterday!!
I always appreciate your work so much. It’s always provocative in an engaging way and your passion is contagious. Life has a way of convincing me that spending hours contemplating and discussing a fictional narrative is a waste of time
I just discovered your channel, love it. Very cool.
the fact that this video came out today is a miracle for me, i’ve been trying to get back into filmmaking and was feeling discouraged but this woman is so fucking inspiring and amazing, and i’m also really happy to hear another woman who is super passionate about and dedicated to her art in a way i really relate to and i wanna watch this movie now, thank you!!!
Thats what i want from a good vid, it introduces you to something new you like.
Excellent video as always
Thank you very much for the invitation, sir, and join you I shall. When this video popped up on my feed and I read the title,I was on the fence regarding whether or not I wanted to watch it because it seemed like it MIGHT be interesting. But then I saw that it was you, which of course caused me to immediately click on it.
Thank you so much!!! Alice was being shown on the screens of a club I went to once, I have always been curious about it.
I found this when randomly browsing Tubi one day and wish more people talked about it. Loved learning more about the artist
Love this! Thank you 😊
Working a job is really hard, while trying to make artwork. I’m doing that myself, but shit is annoying💀but I’m unemployed now, so hopefully when I get a job I can make it work!
Sometimes you watch a video and it feels like peering at a corpse dressed in Sunday clothes: an expensive and luxurious exterior to hide a vapid core. Your channel feels like the exact opposite; every segment a little work of art. Very excited for the rest of this series.
Wonderful video as usual.
We eating good today! New praise of shadows and it's animated!
I'm excited for this!
watched this film because I saw the thumbnail for this video. what a strange, inscrutable, occasionally almost nauseating, but always beautiful little work of art
Heck yeah! A Zane special! I know I should do my honey do list but this is one of those things where ya get so excited that you just push things aside for a bit to watch.
0:05 I gotta say I love the new intro!
This film in particular to me is extremely interesting but it was the inspiration for one of my art professors to assign a project my sophomore year of college where everyone had only two weeks to make a one to two minute long stop motion animation, so I don't watch it too often out of spite. The fact that interviews with her are so rare was something that I was unaware of, since she's come to my college campus multiple times as a guest lecturer and during screenings for students that the art department does of blood tea and red string. If I remember correctly she's close with one of the art professors at my campus, hence why she's done so much for the art department.
Beautiful review; the comparison to Alice is apt! The differences highlight what is special about this body of work. I found your thoughts to be both informative and intriguing, and I plan on looking into this artist! Thank you!❤
Oooo, I think Im gonna give this a watch!
Great, great video! Who else chooses with such great taste the subject for his videos? Well done, as always! ...and I have to say that I miss seeing you appear on screen, for it's always nice to see the face behind the voice!
Thanks so much! After these four I’m doing one that will be 2-3 hours and I’m going to be on screen for basically the entire time. My main idea behind it is that if there’s a visual component I want to show that, but if I’m talking about something that doesn’t have a lot of visuals I’ll be on screen. But I want to do that more often, I enjoy being in the videos
@@InPraiseofShadows Good to know, and your explanation makes total sense! Looking forward to more shared passions of yours!
Yay! More love for Blood Tea and Red String!
I'm an old fan of Jan Svankmajer & Bros Quay..I definitely want to see this!!
For a second when they said it was made by a “single person” I thought they meant a single person as in they didn’t have a girlfriend. And it was a lesson in not worrying about being with someone and just focus on your passion.
I have this movie on DVD. Very cool to see it getting some recognition.
Happy to see this one!
Just saw Mad God last year and loved it so I'll definitely have to check out Blood Tea and Red String
Doing a stop-motion short (14 mins) myself, and Im on year 5 now... Im not sure either how it took so long ;) Thanks for an inspiring video, both to you and to Christiane! :)
Genuinely never heard of this, and I can’t wait to check it out
Yet again, Zane, you inform me of great shit in the horror world and I get to add to my watch list.
Unrelated, her art seeming amazing
TeapI cry for taking your time and taking thirteen years if it means a lot to you and you’re dedicated then time doesn’t matter. Inspiring 💖
I own this on DVD, and it is delightful!
Holy crap she's in KC? Amazing.
I'd like to nominate La Casa Lobo/The Wolf House, as a part of this series you're doing. As well as a retrospective on Shozin Fukui's work
New favorite filmmaker
Ben from Parks & Rec has been real quiet since this dropped
I heard if this movie way back at high school, I got interested because of the peculiar looks to the bird characters. I still remember watching the video of the creator showing videos of the movie she is working on. Looks pretty trippy.
Great vid
