Hey everybody! Hope you are doing great and life is treating you well. Thanks for watching the newest video. Here in a few weeks I’ve got a fun franchise video coming along that I hope you will enjoy. I am also deep at work on this year’s Halloween special. I think it will end up being one of the best things I’ve ever worked on, and might be my new favorite personal project of mine. It is weird, and a little different but I really can’t wait to share it with you. It is a deep dive into a local horror urban legend from where I grew up, and is an extremely bizarre story and all of it really happened. I am buzzing with excitement waking up to work on it each day which I think is a great sign. Until then, have a great fall, and thanks again for everything.

Funny to think what stories he could write with a great artist! Would probably something be like an American Jodorosky and Moebius.
I think someone should get his original script and produce it, they could market it as the original concept before Reitman pared it down to the movie we know today, it might also be fun to analyze and look for familiar elements that made it to the final film.

Saw this film at a sleepover and perhaps they hadn’t realized it’s target demo should’ve been 9yro girls in pjs. We absolutely loved it. I laughed so hard I literally had tears streaming down my face. It’s awesomely bonkers

I too saw this movie at a sleepover......i was probably 12 or 13. Didn't remember much about it, other than Dan Aykroyd's ugly nose, lol!! I just sort of watched it again a few days ago, here on YT. Aykroyd makes me laugh, so I didn't think it was all that horrible. 😝

John Candy was so great in pretty much everything he did. He never seemed to be out of his element no matter the style of production. He really was one of the great ones.

I think he would have eventually been fine, once the stink died down. He was universally beloved, and he was still a funny guy. Oliver Stone had nothing but praise for him for his role in JFK, which was a serious role for him.
I was a member of the test screening audience for Valkavania. I was one of the few people that liked it. In its original form, a lot of what was good about it was the fact that just when you couldn't imagine things could get any worse or more absurd, the film would deliver something beyond anything you could anticipate. The reveal of Mister Bonestripper was one of those.
Oh my gosh I would have loved to have seen the full release. We should all call Dan Aykroyd up and tell him we love him and to give us the good thing on DVD

Born 1984. This movie goes right along side Never ending story, The Labyrinth, Monster Squad, The Goonies, Ghost Busters, Cone heads, etc... although this left a very different feeling that no other movie had ever left. A feeling of the darkness that would later reveal its ugly face when I became an adult and had to face the world of economics, and government. The movie is now a reflection of my childhood, and things I would later come to see. The death traps even look fun to ride. The toys, and the bones mix themselves together in an underlying truth to how you see the world when your little and how it actually is, and what’s really going on. The darkness under government, politics, and the entire global economy’s belly. Dan Aykroyd is a true genius, and artist. This movie is somehow fun, and unsettling all at the same time. It’s like a fun birthday party with the presence of a demon in the room. Movies like this, and the cable guy etc... great movies with bad ratings are only being judged by their numbers anyhow. If they could had made the exact same film with a much lower budget, and released it on a better date? Would the critics had a different opinion of the movie? Same budget but made 100million? Dry land is not a myth, I’ve seen it!!!

No one ever talks about Monster Squad. Top 5 kid movie of all time? I think so. Right there with Goonies.

As odd as Dan can be sometimes I have to admit him being really passionate about the things he loves like for excample ghosts, spiritualism, and/or aliens....is really endearing and I love that he totally owns it like the king he is. This movie is very much a Tales From The Crypt movie even though it isn't one.
Would you agree it would easily fit along any of the national Lampoon films too?
@@Robert08010 Yes, the original poster design is very much like you'd see on the Vacation poster (same artist) and you could arguably say it's very much a National Lampoon halloween movie even though it didn't come out during halloween (it definitely should have come out in October, it would have killed if it came out in October).
His strangeness made him shine as an actor. No other comedian can compare, in that respect.
Dan Aykroyd and John Candy are gold and will forever have a place in my heart. I'll die on this hill.
If you like weird and watch this movie with no expectations, I think you would find it interesting. I watch this as a kid and I liked it, and remember it fondly.

Ya my family found the movie in probably 92 and we all love it. It's funny if you ask people what is bad about the movie they have a hard time coming up with something and just say it was too weird. I personally don't think anything is too weird.
As a kid, I remember it being weird as fuck but I still though it was just okay... Not as good as mom and dad save the world. I loved that shit as a kid

This is a thought-provoking and great video. "Nothing But Trouble" is a CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED film.
The "professional" critics' response to this movie encapsulates why I don't give even a single crap what they think about movies. I really liked it. It's "weird," and I like that very much.
I don't write the critics off because they films they praise I usually do enjoy too. But when you consider what they like, you just can't expect them to get the nuance of a film of this millimeter. Its over their heads. That bit when Demi says, "You too need counseling" and Bobo responds, "I'm willing but HE won GOOO!!" Its SO out of place, I love it.

The best way I can describe this movie is that it's like something you watched on cable as a child for a few minutes and never found out what it was but this vague impression of one or two nonsensical scenes got burned into your brain forever so you finally try and figure out what it was to prove that you didn't hallucinate the whole thing but "death coaster" and "old man judge" don't turn up anything so you decide it was just a weird dream after all
The premise of a Horror Comedy wasn't really established without it being goofy. But what it was was unsettling and unusual. Just watching all these actors with solid scripts performing together was amazing. I love this movie, its too bad the world didn't.
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. It was creepy, had comedy, had Humpty Hump and 2Pac. This movie is a classic!

Fascinated by the occult since childhood with his scholarly grandfather-then here comes this comedy-horror movie with chalk doors and complex summoning rituals and Saturn worms-he must have had the BIGGEST smile on his face the whole time ❤️
I'm pretty sure I first saw this movie on a Saturday afternoon on TV. I thought it was terrible, and hilarious, and truly scary and bizarre. I loved seeing beloved actors like Ackroyd and Candy playing really evil characters, and the whole production was so intricate and crazy. Loved it.
WHAT?!?! This movie was morbidly amazing!!!! And to get Demi Moore in this campy dark flick... omg! There were real tears in those eyes, when she saw the demonstration of the chopping machine. She looked genuinely terrified.

I love that you did such a respectful, reverential deep dive into this deeply strange, hugely underrated film! I hope this makes its way to Dan Aykroyd and that he realizes just how many of us are glad he used his biggest opportunity in Hollywood to make something so unsettling and unique. And MAN do I wish there was a longer R-rated cut, if only because I'd love to spend some more time in, well, no...watching rich yuppies get tortured in...Valkenvania!
I own this movie, I've loved it for years. Two years ago I showed it to a girl I was dating and she liked it but she was taken aback. She said it's good but it's so strange. The story behind the set is amazing too. I hope Aykroyd is proud of it today.
I recently started a job at a financial institution that shall remain nameless (starts with a B, is headquartered in England and is over 300 years old ;)) and while I appreciate the position and opportunity I can't help but occasionally feeling like a bit of an outsider. Either because I'm new or because this is the 1st time I've worked in this particular industry. Anyhow, I have loved this outrageous movie for decades and being surrounded by bankers on a daily basis I often find myself thinking about it and silently chuckling to myself. Recently I shared this thought with my dad who has never seen this movie. Perfect timing. You have provided a way for me to show him all the goodness that is Nothing but Trouble without having to pull various videos myself. You also gave an impeccable synopsis. A coincidence? I think not. More like destiny. Now ya got yourself a new sub...

This movie definitely felt like a rollercoaster as a child. It was funny, weird and entertaining at the same time.
I totally loved this movie when I stumbled upon it watching TV as a kid. I put this in the same category of awesome as movies like “Stay Tuned”, “Freaked, “Mom & Dad Save the World” etc. 🙌

I remember my grandma had a VHS player with a ton of random tapes and one of them was labelled "Quigley Down Under" but the movie on it was Nothing But Trouble. The movie was so freaking weird that it stuck with me but I've never seen anyone else talk about it before. Couldn't click on this video fast enough lol.

I love this movie. Saw it in the theater with friends when it was released. We had no idea what it was about. Nice surprise. Very unique movie.
This movie feels like it was made for a generation of people who were just being born. I love this movie because of how it looks and feels and how weird it is. Plus the idea of being essentially kidnapped is terrifying.
In a weird way Hook is a similar movie, insane/amazing/overdone sets, costumes, star studded, went over budget and was critically panned at the time, however I think its place as a children’s movie is what made it a cult/future success.

First saw this movie about 20 years ago, and it gave me a Troma-with-a-budget vibe. at that time Hearing the background and how Dan Ackroyd took good care of his people makes me think he and Lloyd Kaufman both discovered the alchemy of: making grotesque art + treating your crew right = oddly compelling media.

I've always had a fond memory of this movie. It's one of those bizarre fever-dreams that they would only air at some ridiculous hour, and it was so damn weird and unique that you almost wonder if you ever even watched it at all. It's in the same category as Idle Hands and The Frighteners for me, all of them just dark, strange, and funny underappreciated films.
Terrorvision is another one. Totally bonkers fever dream.

One of my most favorite flicks ever. Left a huge impression on me as a kid (80s baby 90s kid here) I don’t consider myself to be a Chevy chase fan at all, but I’m def a fan of Dan Akroyd

As an eighties baby, and a 90’s kid, who watched Comedy Central and loved weird shit….I am disappointed I have never heard of this movie before now. I feel like there’s a party tray of major nostalgia going around the room and I’m missing out 😢

A thing that I think is missed in this video is the effect that a generational gap and Comedy Central had on this movie, and it's current place in people's minds.
I remember being a kid in the 90s and this movie was on comedy central all the time, (likely because it was cheap to play when comedy central was still young.) I watched this and office space and some of my other favorite comedies dozens of times. It was never presented as a flop or a bad movie and I think younger people have a greater openness to stories that are different from what they expect.
If it hadn't been for comedy central playing movies like this every day for months I don't think I would be as into film as I am today. I love Nothing but trouble.

Antonio Dittman... I can agree with that but also I think this film was truly ahead of its time. I know a lot of movies get labeled that but this one to me really fits that description. When I was younger me and my brothers would watch this movie and laugh and laugh we thought it was so funny. Usually with movies I like that are considered “bad” I can tell why they were considered that at least but this one doesn’t come across that way at all and I didn’t know it was till years later reading about it online. I think the jokes just went over most older people’s head or they considered it too silly and gross to enjoy for that time. If it would’ve been released around the time of anchorman it would be considered a masterpiece imo

I saw this movie on TV as a very young kid with a fever and it traumatized me. I’m 31 now and have been searching for this movie for years because I never knew the title. It’s haunted me for so long and seeing this gave me full bodied shudders as the memories of this freakin movie came rushing back.
I think I’ll give it a watch now that I’m grown and see how I feel about it. It definitely ruined my life for a bit as a kid when I watched it by mistake lmao

The Shining gave me problems....i think i was 7 or 8.
My bedroom was straight across from a bathroom and the shower curtain looked like that old lady in the tub.

In summer 1993 (13) i watched Stephen King's 'It' over a few days as it was aired on TV while i was brutally sun-poisoned and did not sleep for days. That clown left quite an impression.
The music playing when the pyscho judge descends from the ceiling in his chair had me in stitches.
The I SPY book comparison is spot-on. I love that colorful, crowded yet lived-in look where you notice something new every time you watch the movie. The first Addams Family movie had that look as well.
This movie always felt like a bit of a horror movie when I was a kid. Any movie where you're stuck in a place and can't get out freaks me out.
I think it's important to realize that pretty much everyone who likes this movie are people who grew up on Ghost Buster and a post-akroyd world. This kinda humour is what this generation is primed to enjoy, unlike the 40-something reviewers at the time.

Yeah this was more of a kid’s movie, like the goonies. There’s absolutely no blood in this movie, when they kill the group of jerks on the roller coaster dry bones come out at the end instead of the bloody mess it’s supposed to be. The ending was supposed to be Chris being cartoonishly chased by eldona and the judge while the credits rolled, but Chevy chase reportedly refused to come back to shoot the scenes. The best thing in this movie was digital underground.
I was a child when it came out (well, quite a while after it had come out) and my renting it was based entirely on loving Ghostbusters. To say I was confused was an understatement. Reading about it years later and seeing what the contemporary reviews had to say, I realised it was on my earliest experiences with seeing a terrible film and not understanding why I was so bored and frustrated with it.
I appreciate your insight but also your honest appreciation for a very fickle art. You have a kindness to your videos which helps movie watchers like me see behind the scenes to folks trying their best, even though it may not have been appreciated.
Like athletes, all you can do is try your best. And these guys seemed to have done this on this movie.

Thank you for making this video. My best friend introduced me to the movie because he loved it. He died of brain cancer last year, but I know he would have gotten a kick out of this video.
There was something so weird and bizarre about this film, certainly impressionable. Demi’s hairstyle has always been in the back of my mind. This movie reminds me of that one tales of the crypt episode with the mom from home alone. Catherine O’Hara.
The one where she ends up in that one town and they got that weird ass court judicial system. Very interesting twist ending I must say

This movie scared me as a kid, I think it had something to do with the end where the judge holds up The main characters driver's license and says he's going to move in with his son-in-law! I have extreme fear of inlaws because of it!

i saw this as a kid on tv and was lucky enough to watch it from the beginning, i've rewatched it a couple of times since, thanks to the internet. this docu/analysis sheds some light on and confirms some thoughts and feelings i had rewatching it in my 30s. thank you for making this video, i appreciate this movie even more now thanks to the insight behind the making of and intended meaning of the movie.

I've always LOVED this movie! This is one of those movies I would watch over and over as a kid!
It is a strange kind of outlier though... a but like The Burbs? ... and many other horror/comedies. Probably my favorite type of films growing up.
I had no idea about the history and reception.. while I can understand people not understanding it at the time, it's an absolute SHAME it was received so poorly.
I think you absolutely nailed some of the things that are so incredible about this movie. The sets alone are out of this world!
That scene where the couple goes through the bone grinder kind of horrified me as a kid and it's what made me remember this movie. The way these people go from screaming in fear to nothing but a pile of bones in an instant is so dark and unexpected. As if in Tom and Jerry, Tom suddenly and actually just died, or something like that.
The scene in Spider-Man where Gobby turns the board members into skeletons . Since seeing that as a kid, I've been really fascinated by scenes in stuff where people suddenly and instantaneously cease to be people
@@Gloomdrake Oh yeah, that scene had a similar effect on me as well. I guess it's been that way for me since some Star Trek TNG episode... phasers in that show sometimes just vanish people in an instant. Even though it's not graphic, it feels cruel and horrible in a different sort of way, when there's nothing left to even remind you that there was this person who is now dead.

That scene has haunted me pretty much my whole life since I accidentally wound up watching it as a kid while I was fighting a flu. I almost convinced myself that the movie was just a nightmare that I had while sick.

You've made another absolutely amazing video. I really commend you for the amount of love and research that goes into your videos, from giving background on the actors and creators of the film and even talking about the set designs and lighting. You go into so much more detail than many documentaries do. It always feels like a treat to get so much background info. Even when you make movies about movies I was not familiar with (like this one) your passion comes through so strongly that it makes me want to watch them immediately.
Fun fact: the underground fire is inspired by Centralia, PA where the underground coal has been on fire since 1962. Only a handful of residents are left, and they have an agreement with the state that they can live there but if they leave or die their land gets taken by eminent domain.
THIS is the kind of film Hollywood should be remaking. Horror comedy is so much more of a known quantity these days, and the fact they're remaking something so infamous would bring so many people through the door.

I love this movie. Very twisted house of horrors comedy movie. Valkenvania, home to my two favorite giant man babies. Kind of like a funny Texas Chainsaw without the chainsaws. But there is a killer roller coaster!
I have this very strange memory from my childhood where I'm sitting at a seafood restaurant / bar in the neighborhood I grew up with my parents and grandparents, there is a TV in the corner of this bar, and I watch about 2/3 of this movie while my family talks about adult things that I don't care about. I had no context for this movie because it had already been on for probably 20 minutes before I started watching it, I had no idea what I was watching or who any of these actors were, and years later I had always just thought I dreamed this up until I ran into it again on TV. I was so happy to know that it really existed. I watched it three times in a row. I think it's amazing.

Loved this film. Dank Aykroyd had the freedom to get weird with it and it left us with a wild piece of unparalleled cinema.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I still watch it every few years. My teenage daughter loves it as well.
Personally I feel like Bruce Willis would've been a better choice for the lead than Chase in my opinion.
Willis was also a bit difficult to work with, but this film has the type of material he would've thrived in, plus he would be working alongside his then wife (Demi Moore).
Chevy has also been difficult his whole career. So much so that the entire cast of Community didn't have any positive interactions with him

Chase had a much worse reputation, especially at that time. Willis’s rep was still pretty good, but he was huge at the time, and probably would’ve ever done it.

This is a great movie. Pretty unforgettable.
I remember this movie from my childhood. It spoke to me, illuminated what you gave word at the end of your video essay, as my family derided it somewhere in between my age (9 -12) and I am now 40 and haven't seen it since. I would say I am an absurdist when looking at how we humans do what we do for the reasons we do. This film was sadly, proudly?, was informative/formative of my future development. Subscribed. You, bro, are a scholar. I am gonna go watch this again.

I watched "Nothing But Trouble" because you made a video about it, and I was not disappointed! I can't remember the last time I laughed so much during a movie. Nice to hear people discovering this gem in this day and age. I first watched this as a kid in the cinema and I have watched it so many times I wore out my VHS copy initially back in the day.

Akeroyd's biggest talent is the sheer volume of his creative output; the guy is a firehose of ideas. He absolutely benefits from Ramis taking that output and honing it into something more cohesive. Dana Carvey had a similar relationship with Mike Myers. In both of those pairs, the different talents complement eachother wonderfully.

I always loved this movie! It's one of those where pre-internet, no one ever knew what movie you were talking about. I especially enjoyed your appreciation of the members of the crew who created the ambiance and feel of Volkenvania. I've always had such admiration for the detail that went into making this place a main character in the story. The castle itself is a character, and being a maximalist when it comes to interior design, I just LOVE the sets and how grotesque the millions of little props really paint a picture of how otherworldly this place really is.

While it isn’t my favorite movie, I do still find it to be a pretty enjoyable watch and I LOVE the visuals/set pieces in this movie. I think that one of my own biggest problems with the movie is that it still had a lot of unused potential, and I think if just more time was spent on fleshing out and improving the script it would have become a bigger comedy classic to a lot more people.
Also, Judge Valkenheiser is absolutely one of my favorite comedy horror villains. The look, the humor, the mannerisms of that character are REALLY good, and its certainly a big part of what has kept me coming back to this movie after all these years!

Iconic movie of my childhood! I watched this all the time in the 90s, as soon as it started playing regularly on cable. I quote this movie almost daily, throwing around "you're the fat one, you eat all the cereal" with my family on a regular basis.
I appreciated you pointing out how the judge flipped the script by jailing/releasing the unexpected. I honestly had never thought that deeply about the movie, being so entranced by the grotesque hot dogs and nose, the elaborate set pieces, etc.
I absolutely love this movie. I remember my mom playing the vhs for me growing up and thinking "what is this beautiful disaster?"

Always loved this movie, the sets and scenery and just the overall feeling of it was so memorable. The Bone Crusher roller coaster death sentance ride was one of the most unique concepts I had ever seen brought to life and is one of my favorite memories from a movie as a kid. Instead of this being what killed the careers of these actors, I feel like it's more of a final over the top high point of an era of comedy that defined a generation. Critics are always wrong! Even to this day!

Critics both have to feed expectations (mostly that "haughty taughty" artsy movies are better and any sliver of actual entertainment is debasing the medium) and on the other hand only can stand out when they produce edgy reviews that go against the consensus. So it's kind of a race to the bottom when looking for who can diss the enjoyable movies the worst while still staying on the approved lane for critics.

I know it's so bizarre but because of it we loved it and watched it all the time. We got it in the famous 5 dollar Walmart bin and we never looked back!
I wore out my VHS of it and later actually wore out another tape of it I recorded from a TV broadcast. However that second one was probably already used a lot. But still. Hopefully my Blu-Ray will last longer, lol

Imagine being a studio executive dealing with both Bonfire and Nothing But Trouble at once.
So my husband and I saw this video about 2 months ago. He then bought it on eBay, and we ended up watching it in a cabin in the woods. I haven't felt that kind of anxious at a movie in a long time! It definitely was worth watching once and we appreciated this video, but yeah it was unexpectedly scary.
Great video, dude. It's amazing the amount of details you have collected. I have to comment on the way your display your quotes though, on a crazy galaxy backgrounds with a hollow fluorescent font. It's a literal eyesore.
It's awesome to hear that other people feel the same way about this movie that I do. It's not high art or a masterpiece sure, but it's visually interesting and charming in a way that reminds me of those weird childhood nostalgia vids. Not even a year after I watched it, I found myself lost in upstate NY in a town that looked exactly like Valkenvania and it made the experience absolutely hilarious.

I had somehow never heard of this movie until my wife introduced it to me. We watched it together and I laughed so hard I cried. I absolutely love it. I still quote it to this day.
