Not always, there are athletes who are motivated by the need to dominate, and then there are those who don't play just to beat the competition they play to be better than themselves every day. You can find legends who follow each strategy but at the end of the day, it depends on what drives you. It is clear MJ always had a need to dominate and there is nothing wrong with that. Kobe was the type of player that played against himself not against others and that motivation made him one of the most hard-working players in the game, ever.

and Chicago was playing Boston. IN THE OLD BOSTON GARDEN. this probably was the best team (over the course of one season) in the 1980's. prime Larry Bird, prime Kevin McHale, prime Robert Parrish .... this Celtics was better than everyone ... they knew it ... and they told you so. That Boston team lost one game at home during the regular season (still dunno how that shit happened). MJ wasn't a great jump shooter in those days, but he still was dropping jumpers on the WHOLE squad in dropping 63 (still a playoff record) in Game 2 of the opening-round series, a double OT loss ... Im 39 and grew up idolizing MJ. If he played today, which is often talked about, he would literally DESTROY the league
The fact that can't even arm check anyone anymore would make it impossible to guard him.
