Easter egg at 14:45 -- the soldier exchanging gifts with a chad bishop: "Here, for the eternal friendship of western and eastern Christians". If they only knew what would happen centuries later...
Before I start tearing up over the Great Schism let's have a look at the popes and patriarchs who make an appearance throughout the course of the video shall we?
03:52 -- Felix III, Pope of Rome (483-492). was married and widowed before he was elected as pope. yes that means he **did** have children, but legitimately here. keep an eye on his descendants, one of them becomes a great man. rejected the Henotikon and excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople responsible, Acacius. also excommunicated other prelates who accepted the Henotikon, to little effect. made provisions to welcome back the Christians who had lapsed under Arian persecution in North Africa. sainted by both East and West.
05:12/05:20 -- Euphemius, Patriarch of Constantinople (490-496). made Emperor Anastasius sign a profession of faith. tried to restore union with Rome but was reluctant to remove the names of his less-faithful predecessors (Acacius and Fravitas) from the list of the faithful departed to be prayed for. relations with Pope Felix and his successor Gelasius were strained as a result. eventually got on the emperor's bad side and was accused of treason, even surviving an assassination attempt. was instead deposed and exiled. died in 515.
09:40 -- Macedonius II (chad), Patriarch of Constantinople (496-511), and his successor Timothy (wojak), Patriarch of Constantinople (511-518) and first of his name. though he owed his job to the emperor exiling his predecessor, Macedonius steadfastly refused to reject the Council of Chalcedon no matter what Anastasius tried or threatened. eventually he was falsely accused of some outrageous crime and also heresy, and was exiled himself. died in 517. his successor Timothy accepted the Henotikon but did not reject Chalcedon, though his emissaries openly condemned it from the pulpit in Alexandria.
11:20 -- Hormisdas, Pope of Rome (514-523). ascended the Chair of St Peter after a decade and a half of infighting between supporters of Pope Symmachus and pro-imperial supporters of rival claimant Laurentius. that whole mess even dragged Ostrogothic King Theodoric in to arbitrate between the two factions. in stark contrast his election went nice and smoothly despite him having formerly been a Symmachus supporter. was also a widower with a son, again legitimately. spent the greater part of his reign agitating for an end to the ongoing schism, his efforts being rewarded in 519, within a year of Justin becoming emperor. sainted by both East and West.
14:37 -- John, Pope of Rome (523-526), first of his name. a former supporter of Laurentius in his earlier years, later switched sides and confessed his error to Symmachus. though sent by Theodoric (against his will mind you) to obtain concessions for the Arians, John refrained from asking Emperor Justin to allow former heretics to relapse into heresy, or to regain the positions they formerly held in the clergy. was detained by the barbarian king when he came back, as Theodoric found the concessions he did obtain insufficient. lasted only a few weeks in prison. died May 27. sainted by the West. not sure if also sainted by the East.
