Great video. The electronic shifting and internal gearing is moving much faster into production on the e-bikes where you're pushing 400-600 watts through the drivetrain continuously and there's more wear from heavier loads.
“Yeah the hub’s heavier but you lose a chainring and the front mech.” Sram front der- 69g. Chainring- 90g. Classified wheels: +926g. Doesn’t quite work out does it…
Awesome vid, and the new space seems to be coming along well - also I work for a cargo bike company in London, we use internal enviolo gears that are changed via a Bluetooth shift, so these kind of things are already out there (there not bad, I just prefer what I'm used to so maybe I'm a bit biased) - keep up the good work guys
Wohoooo! Chuffed to see this coming together. Enjoy your new bike Nic!
Keep the content coming! really excited to see where the new direction goes and super happy to see more of Jimmi!
great to see the classified hub, and keenly awaiting ride feedback from Nic. nice to see the new style videos....
Good to see Carbon frames being made in Gateshead....oh hang on!
Hope we get a ride review. Really been thinking about this system.
absolutely
The future Nick describes already exists - Shimano Alfine 11spd Di2. With Gates belt drive makes for an awesome low maintenance set up on my road/commuting bike. Rear wheel is a bit on the heavy side, but that's the only negative.
And shimano also have automatic gear change based upon your cadance. And you have the pinion system aswel. Is said to be better than rohlloff.
Heavy and not terribly efficient (Alfine is decent, but all geared hubs seem to be just slightly worse than casettes). But almost 0 maintenance rules, it's great for the everyday bike.
@@Finnspin_unicycles tiny bit less efficient than a derailleur system working in perfect order, but not so you'd notice when pedalling. For low maintenance commuter or touring it's awesome! Overall weight is about the same as a 'typical' derailleur system, it's just concentrated more at the back wheel.
I don't know, I feel like most of the proprietary aspects of this build create more problems than they solve. Not my cup of tea this one.
I feel much the same, if you have access to parts (ie chainrings and classified parts) it’s not might not be too much of a hassle but beyond your locale it would inevitably cause headaches
Stunning bike build Nick!
Francis & Jimmy, you'll have to film Nick on his maiden voyage :-)
Envious! Finally a bike that's a bit different!!! I really like the look of this, wouldn't mind having one even without the magic rear hub! Congrats!
That 900+ gram weight difference between the two wheel sets is scary. 😱
yeah, i was all in till they said that the weight. Will come down though.
Great sick build sick building
I like the way Lucas embarrassingly walks back in for the sunglasses, and then you have a smattering of humour, topical conversation, very informative convo as well as rhetorical conversation too...rounded off with a laugh, I do love Frances Cades videos 👍
This build reminds me of the guy thats does an ultra PC build but doesn’t game. Its so overkill.
NBD! Congratulations 🎉
That's quite the weight penalty the future is going to be really interesting seeing how this improves. Love me a Vielo they are a real classy bike.
The more I see Vielo, the more I want one 😍
That looks amazing 👌👌
900g+ weight penalty? That doesn’t negate the weight of a front mech / chainring etc at all. You’re adding about half a kilo in comparison. The only advantage is an aero one, but then that’s probably negated by the whopping thru axle lever… it’s fancy tech, but that’s all.
To be fair, that’s compared to my Zipp 353’s with a 10-33 SRAM Red cassette and Michelin tyres. So probably about 300-500g lighter than most other wheelsets out there. But yes, it’s still a heavy system. I’m sure with the new investment and other wheel manufacturers like Enve they’ll be able to shave some of it off.
@@nicvieri2627true, there’s more to be had I’m sure. There must be something in it otherwise they wouldn’t have secured the investment they have already! Enjoy it, looking forward to an update to see how you find it after putting some miles on it 👍🏻
awesome looking bike!
Oh cool bike build
Studio looks good on camera, interested to see how you're going to kill the echo on your audio Francis! 😁 Padded walls for when Jimmi goes crazy maybe
That bike is pure badass 😎👍
The two speed hub has been around for while, now with more single front chain ring setups could see more of take up. Be interesting to see the weight of a pair of Parcours with the two speed hub.
Didn't you meet the Vielo guy about his 1x-only gravel bike a few months ago?
But wow, _very nice_ road bike for Nic.
You can get Alfine rear wheel hub to shift with di2. Main downside is still efficiency though, but you get to use the maintenance free belt drive
Give that a Super Nice in GCN Tech parlance and I do appreciate a unique build or at least one which is ahead of the curve as surely this will become a popular template. And thanks for showing us that Classified hub and how its innards easily slip into an otherwise standard hub, cool. Not a fan of campus bikes and their one lame ring, but this I could see, sort of like modern Sturmey-Archer and Euro to boot, what's not to like about that. Thanks again and I like this new team format and all those Park Tools, Y'all can get stuff done with those. 😀
Cool brand…always been tempted
Could, vould / ( will 😉) be the future for bike builds? Francis, any chance of a bike build video or talk with Dov at Parcours and his collaboration with classified?
Pizza looked amazing.
3:26 Sachs/SRAM Automatix is another such interesting hub. Once at a certain speed (angular velocity) it ups your gearing by 27%.
id love the classified hubs. and apparently given sealed system will last longer and need less maintenance
Very good bike better start saving now
Ohh boy, can't wait for you to get some Parcours wheels from Dov with the Classified hub? ... soon
rolhoff already has an electronic version!! It's just less efficient having all your gears internal
Shop looks great!
Where was Tony with the cocktails?
Love the 1X! 😍
Not sure about the boat anchor wheels. 😳Perhaps a 12 speed with a granny gear and a 48 ring? Need to do the math. 🧐
If the zipps are 1.5kg or so, makes the other 1s 2.4kg. That is porky.
Sweet bike. And yea… internal gear hubs do kinda rock. I’m personally a fan of them. I’ve got an 11spd hub on my gravel bike, and frankly love it. Is it the lightest? Nope, but hella resilient. Gates belt too… aka, so little maintenance it’s lovely.
Classified seems to be more or less going that direction. But am sure Rohloff, Shimano/Sturmey Archer will go electric shifting soon enough. The tech is there to do so.
Rohloff and Alfine 11 are already available with electronic shifting!
@@here-be-ember I read somewhere electronic is better for hubs since they're more sensitive to "cable" adjustment. Something about not fully engaging the gear if the adjustment is wrong.
It kinda sound like Nic is just describing a Motorbike, albeit with pedals 🤣
On a moto all the gears are in the "bottom bracket" area? I could be wrong
I was thinking. A mixture of both. Something that’s crank and hub based.
I spoke with a sales representative at Sea Otter about those wheels. They are super cool but also super expensive x10...
With all the new space there needs to be an area optimized for photo/video of bikes. Build a background and mounting system to optimally display your projects, rather than just leaning against the wall.
didn't shimano already do an internally geared hub based electronic group? the alfine di2...?
Bike looked great, ignore my earlier scepticism. Classified hubs and similar are the future. Don’t Roloff do electronic shifting already?
Very nice bike. The classified hub is very interesting and I think things will move internal over time as long as they can get the drag down on the system to a point where the loss of drag is made up for by the loss of aero drag. No pro is going to run a system that costs them watts and if pros don’t run it people won’t buy it despite most people’s needs and a pros needs being basically the opposite of each other.
Looks like you need a vise to hold the steer tube cutter and other items
Ned to do a Quirk bike Francis!
🙃
I’d be interested in how the Hope RX4 changes the brakes!
Uno-X bike team testet that hub. The biggest problem was around the thru axel. Can't remember if you exactly why. The bike looks amazing tho and clever way to ditch 1 chainring.
They do different length thru axel’s. Some frames stick out more so if it’s too short it won’t tighten. I opted for the longest one. Just so that I can use it on a different frame of someone wanted to try it out.
Another black shiny bike.
Had Surmey-Archet rear hub 3 speed gears in the 60s. Old tech.
I've always suspected that the classified system is the future. It almost makes me want to wait a long time before getting a new bike so I can adopt it.
Except don't you just have to buy a compatible rear wheel? You don't need a new bike.
Ah sweet, sounds like a hub with overdrive
white shirt during a bike build, Francis U wild
Does not make sense, what problem does it solve? Basically they replace a simple front derailleur with a far more complicated set-up and there is no way that it would be more efficient. It essentially forces you to cross chain and that is always less efficient and then there must be additional drag in the planetary gears.
go internal everything including the disk brake rotor. 😁
When is it going to be new bike day for Calum?
plans for audio dampening in new studio?
Did you cover up the 107 tat? :O
Vielo should post some windtunnel data on their website to support their aero claims
Does going internal make it easier or more difficult to maintain? For a backyard mechanic like myself things like internal cabling increases the difficulty.
More difficult, but also equally more cool.
Definitely more difficult. And definitely more expensive. You have to cut the brake hoses every time a headset bearings needs replacing.
But everyone seems to be going this way.
Decided to just buy a frame and build myself a bike... no brand name no logo. Just shimano components and no one has what i have. When you remove logo prints on some brands you will just get similar frames wuth different components. 😊
I believe that those classified hubs would really take off if you could control them directly via DI2 or eTap.
I think you already can with di2
yes you can do it, but you have to cut the original cables of your Di2 shifter (but that hurts) and make the connection to the remote controle unit of you classified system.
@@rikmeynen9871 Well, not really the solution I was hoping for 😃
First comment on the first bike build video on the new workshop!
Can confirm
Looking at the time stamps, you’re officially number 2
Should have typed a shorter message 😭
What is Jimmy CZcams channel?
The sharp angle of those seatstays says cracks. Hideous too.
Eurosport said WVA ran a 48 tooth 1x at the cyclocross worlds today.
Soooo it's a Sturmy Archer rear hub?
I think the not-too-distant future is a large chain ring, a 3x geared hub, and a 6-9 speed cassette.
The very people who don’t care about a kilo+ of extra weight on their back wheel and terrible efficiency are the exact same people who aren’t weirdly prissy about the presence of a front derailleur and can’t afford to spend £2k extra on a bike for nothing.
Rohloff hub gears is a far better bet, it at least has positives for *some* use cases.
They could put 3 gears in the hub and have 8 speed (which is a lot lighter) and you have the same gears. Brilliant! This is the future or have 36?
We are toying with the idea of sticking it on a double. To see how that plays out. 😊
A GEARED hub! Brilliant.. but is there a parasitic power loss?
Can anybody say if Styrkr delivers to America?
Jimmi's hilarious 😂
Really enjoying the new tech content. Missing the MTB content though - whatever happened to the MTB events that you were training up for a little while ago? Was looking forward to seeing them.
where's the kickstand and rear rack?
Not trying to take sides but sure sounds like a lot of armchair engineers and cycling experts here. Sure, it's probably not the lightest, or cheapest. Who knows exactly how efficient it is. Some like front derailleurs, others don't. How about anyone here stack up the bike they've wanted for years and we'll go over it from the comfort of the internet and let you know exactly what we think of it. Nic stated he's wanted this frameset and has a nifty new wheelset to try out. So be it, and happy new bike day for him! What you could all be positive about is the potential for a field review or cost break down at some point in the future, because that could be useful info. More useful than most of the commenters who seem to know the future or how cycling should be whining about how wrong this bike is.
Looks cool, would like a ride report. As you were.
Anyone else seeing the irony of the general trend to 1by only for some to then re-add a second gearning as seen here?
Shimano Alfine di2 hub gears !
Jimmy working the long hours. Respect!
Super interesting...I wonder if in a few years we will laugh at the idea of front mecs?
wouldnt the loss in efficiency of a hub gear counteract any potential aero and chainline gains?
and weight lmao
apparently it’s 99-99.5% efficient in the “smaller ring” position. No difference in the other position.
Yes, and by an order of magnitude for the kind of cyclist who should care about aero.
Front derailleurs are fine.
That Detroit-style pizza looks 🤤
What's the light purplish bike the giant is riding?
Vielo gravel bike
@@Jimmidoesstuff thanks for the reply. Appreciate it.
Love your videos, but the Classified hubs are a solution to a non-existent problem. What's the problem with front derailleurs? Either you go full internal hub gears (+ belt drive) and then you have a heavier but almost maintenance free setup, or you just stick with the regular 1X or 2X chain drive setup. Having internal gears AND a rear derailleur has almost all of the disadvantages of both systems with almost none of the pros.
I think the biggest advantage would be in the TT sector. Most of those guys are opting for chainrings up to 60t to maintain their chain line. Downside is climbing slight hills then without the small ring. Definitely very niche though. Will have to see how durable it is over time. Gonna be smashing it around for this year to properly test it.
@@nicvieri2627 This thing would be great on a folding bike.
@@barrytantlinger1033 Just put an internally geared hub on the folding bike and call it done.
Shimano made 11 speed electronic hub gears in the past, but it was a bit clunky and made for citybikes
They still do with the Alfine. Available with Centrelock disc. I've never used one so no idea how good it is or isn't, but axle options are slim (only 135 old iirc).
4:58 subtitles needed. Or invest in 3 boom mics....
God if only classified is 1k cheaper and little bit lighter. The dream running 54-36 with 11-32
7:15 never gonna happen in my opinion, more to do with drivetrain efficiency than technical limitations.
Btw there is an electric Rohloff!
Snazzy bike.
Snazzy Rich.
900g is a heck of a weight penalty to have the same gear range as a normal 2x.
Just when I thought bikes couldn't get any weirder. But fark me it looks sexy.

Need color in your video - white light, white walls, white shirts.
shimano makes an alfine 11 di2 hub
Dammm
Integrating the hub gear into the left shifted rather than an add on part is the next step.
If you go Shimano it is integrated. SRAM hasn't gotten there yet so a satellite
shifter is needed.
my mom has a pinion mtb, it is heavy as fuck. her bike is heavier then mine with a smaller frame and more expensive components. i dont know whether this will be the future because the current style groupsets are the ones that suceeded weight wise. closed systems are very cool for people who dont want to look after their bikes because they dont wear as mucht.
Question - I have a V+1, and understand that the thru axels are proprietary? Is this the same for the R+1, and if so, how are you using the Classified axels? Cheers - D
For the Classified axle, we have manufactured another rear mech hanger to accommodate the 1inch and half pitch thread for the Classified axle. Our standard Vielo QR axle has a TR3 x 12 pitch. So you can fit the Classified Power shift system to either V+1 gravel or R+1 Road bike with the new hanger. We can supply these hangers FOC.
Watched the video and thought I would like one of those frames then saw the price on their website!😪
id like to know nics opinion on fixed gears and track bikes lmao
I love my fixie. When riding it I feel like I’m thinking a lot more about keeping my momentum into hills and I tend to waste less energy by just maintaining my cadence. Almost as if my rear wheel drives the cranks a bit.
@@nicvieri2627 there's that indescribable flow feeling on the fixie, nothing ever quite compares
honestly didn't expect the reply tho, hope you and the lads keep up the good work!
thank you good sir 🙌
