Hi Dave - Yes, trying to get the depth of field you want when things are moving is a real challenge - it's an exercise in compromises - like going to higher f stops, like f16 knowing that diffraction is kicking in - but better than blurry branches.
You mention that you have determined for your sensor that going above ISO 500 is to be avoided, if possible. As an engineer, I know you know these are dual gain sensors, with the second gain range kicking in at ISO 400, and you are most likely familiar with the web site photonstophotos. If I understand the data there, with the Sony-made 45mp Z sensor, you should be able to push.your ISO to 800 and pretty much match the Read Noise of ISO 318. So why the ISO 500 limit? Am I misinterpreting those graphs?
    Thanks - and Happy Holidays!
    Doug

Great question. Nothing can escape entropy, the second law of thermodynamics & the flow of energy over time, including software:) Easiest way to see without understanding thermo or physics: I tested it in the field & then overlaid both images at 500 & 800 to see the image quality. The 800 ISO drops significantly in image quality especially when underexposed. Other reason I know, which depends on thermo & entropy. Image quality & dynamic range all comes down to the amount of electrons captured off the sensor, when photons collide with it. Software can't create more signal (order), without also applying that gain to the underlying noise(disorder). (Signal to Noise Ratio) Only way to increase the signal without increasing the noise is to increase the shutter speed or open the aperture, allowing more photons to hit the sensor. The only reason you really care about ISO on camera is so you can see the image on the back of the screen. The only two values that really matter are shutter speed & f-stop. They collect the light energy from the scene. As you increase the light energy captured from the scene, the entropy in the image file decreases thus reducing the noise (disorder). That being said, software has come a long long way in being able to increase your perception of less entropy in the file. The physical value is unchanged though. Here's my article on ISO: www.davemorrowphotography.com/iso-photography You may also enjoy this article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy_(information_theory) & en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_theory Thanks for the question. I love this kinda stuff:)

      @@DaveMorrow Dave:
Thanks for taking the time to reply. to my post during this busy holiday season.
I am not sure I agree with everything above, however, one thing is certain. One should always "do the experiment". That is, do tests with one's own equipment and not rely on others' data - as you described above with you ISO tests. It is the best way of really knowing the limits and "sweet spots" of one's gear for optimal results.
As an experimental scientist, I confess at being remiss in doing this myself. (shame on me!). Thanks to your video, I will now make a point of doing this in the near future!
      Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Hey Dave, subscribed to your photography course over 2 years ago - still go back to remind myself of the editing techniques. Best investment I ever made, always forget something over the months and so each lesson acts as a great refresher.having the set up tutorial was invaluable, especially when I had to reset photoshop set up after buying a new pc.

Dave, I've been a subscriber for quite some time now and love your spirit. Most people aren't willing to take the risk to do what they really love to do. They play it safe instead, like I did. I'm retired now and getting into photography, hook line and sinker. I love the sun rays from Skylum software. I use photoshop but I'm no expert yet. You mentioned that you could do the sun rays a number of different ways. Do you think you add a video about the different ways to do that? Thanks for all your work so far and looking forward to more.

One of your best videos Dave. Really enjoyed your Photoshop technique for adding fog. I've tried some plug-ins to add fog and they never look right. Your way looked very realistic. I've also tried Luminar Neo and earlier versions for light rays and seldom can I ever get them looking realistic. But I like your idea for adjusting them via masking. Merry Christmas Dave.

Awesome video Dave - really enjoy your videos! I struggle a lot with setting white balance in the field. Half the time I forget and rely on auto white balance and post processing to fix it. For some reason, I’m intimidated by using a gray card… I don’t know why! 🤣

To return home and recall and admire the captures in the compfort of a nice warm home. - Have an amazing Christmas and New Year. Best wishes AlexW
