Hashim Amla, Herschelle Gibbs and Ashwell Prince on the Proteas batting frailties

  • Following a below-par batting performance in the second Test, we asked Hashim Amla, Herschelle Gibbs and Ashwell Prince a tough question:
    Are the Proteas’ batting frailties over the last five years a result of inadequate planning (grooming players from a first-class level and SA A), a lack of world-class players in the domestic scene or the inability to step up when it matters most?

    It’s interesting how Ashwell Prince was essentially replaced by JP Duminy who was flashy but averaged a lot less.

    I agree with Gibbs.
    I think the last test batter produced in SA that was feared by the opposition was Quinton de Kock. In the past oppositions feared Smith, Amla, Gibbs, Kallis, AB, Faf, Kirsten, etc.
    I don't think teams worry about any of our batters lately except maybe Elgar to a certain extent. I had hope in Markram because he scored 100s against Cummins, Hazlehood, Starc and Lyon.

    • @realg7849
      @realg7849 Před rokem

      @Shahmir Ahmad I didn't say he averaged 55. He actually averaged 38.8. My point was that the opposition feared him 'cause he could take the game away. He has a 100 in India again Ashwin and Jadeja. Asia is not a measuring stick. If SA is 23-3 with Bavuma and Rassie batting the opposition won't be worried now bit they'd a bit worried knowing that QDK is yet to come.
      In the past SA being 23-3 meant AB was batting with Kallis which was scary for the opposition

    • @realg7849
      @realg7849 Před rokem +1

      @Shahmir Ahmad I get your point. I think the quality of our bowling has remained the same. Our batting used to be like 7.5/10 at worst and 9.5/10 at best but now it's only 4/10 at best.
      In the past Smith, Amla, Kallis, AB could walk into any team in the world but now only Elgar can make it to other teams except India and Australia.
      QDK even though you say he was mediocre he still makes it to all sides except maybe India but he'd challenge Pant a lot.

      @realg7849 Před rokem

      @Shahmir Ahmad I agree with T20, I'm not sure about tests. I don't think Rizwan has played enough tests. Check the impact that QDK had against Pakistan in 2019 or against Australia in 2016 or Against NZ in 2017, those are just from the top of my head. People were comparing him to Gilchrist which is huge

    In addition to what the guys have said here, I feel it is also important for school cricket to be invested in. Televise tournaments, much like they do in Rugby. Bring attention to any of the inter-school tournaments. This attention should then add a new dimension, adding more pressure for those batsman to perform. Often, these young batsman only come into the spotlight much later and then wilt under the lights.

    Well regarding to what Ashwell Prince said, I want to add that the batters aren't getting big runs also in SA. So it's not only the different conditions but also a lack of quality bowlers in the domest cricket. I'm not talking about Rabada, Nortje and the other contracted national team players but the rest of the players who play mostly domestic cricket.

    Just a thought. Cricket is dying because of lack of exposure in SA. No crowds and games are not televised except to those who can afford it. If I don't get exposed, I won't have an interest. T20 gets the exposure and we breed the T20 mentality. 4 day game was televised to a broader audience , made more accessible, it would grow the mindset of the player because failure and success would be seen by more people. In return, the sport would benefit. Look at US sports. It is unrecognisable to us but it's following in that country is astronomical. Simple, because they made it available to everyone at every level and sacrificed the short term financial gains for growth and sustainability. Our players are only recognised when they reach the international level. I grew up with the Adrian Kuipers, Eric Simons, when they were household names before we reached international status. I was at Newlands when Jacque Kallis made his debut for WP and scored that 100. I knew he would be great. we saw Hershelle on tv playing provincial cricket. Now, we don't even know our own players provincially and so, we don't support them. The game suffers in the end. Apologies for the long winded vent.

    First time I saw Markram he looked like a player who was ready made for test cricket in his early 20’s. tbh he has just gone downhill. He seems to have totally lost the rhythm of batting. Maybe it’s too much T20, I don’t know. But he’s not batting at a test match tempo.

    The entire batting line up has to be overhauled. It's absolutely pathetic that we're carrying so many passengers in the batting line up. Our best batsman is a guy who last scored a test century 6 years ago. Rassie Van Der dussen is regarded as one of the senior batters in the side, but looks absolutely at sea when he's in the middle. Let's not even begin to speak about Aiden Markram who should have been dropped long ago.
    CSA and especially Victor Mpitsang is to blame for the horrendous batsman being produced. David Bedingham is currently in England trying to earn citizenship and Victor Mpitsang and CSA are doing absolutely nothing to intervene and stop him from playing for England. He was the top run scorer in the world in terms of first class cricket in 2021 and yet is being overlooked. Instead they're giving Khaya Zondo test caps, a 32 year old batsman who is well past his prime. How is this building towards the future?
    Do we even have a batting coach? It's absolutely ridiculous man. Our bowlers can't keep bailing the side out. We're not serious about cricket in this country and it shows in the selections.

    Yeah we don't want to regress to Andrew Hudson's numbers. South Africa had wonderful depth in batting. Someone like Markram annoys me. He's had all this exposure, been in the system forever and still cannot produce the goods. Question I'd like to ask these guys is: How long? How long do you put up with mediocrity? Suppose that depends on who you have as your next best? 🤔

    Hash wants a psychology ward. Herch wants a military boot camp and Ash wants CSA to make the batsman figure out how to bat for 4 hours, and the intricacies thereof. I always find it interesting that in the industry of speculation, experts are no more accurate than amateurs. One thing that had not fallen away since the glory days of Smith and even before that with Cronje, Wessels and even Rice, is the strength of our bowling, even when we are in a rebuilding phase we almost literally never have too much problem taking 20 wickets. Our batting, whilst utterly sublime at times is not actually our strength. We are a nation of bowlers. Superb quick bowlers, and bangers and of late even seamers, swing bowlers and glimpses of spinners.
    Perhaps its our pitches. Who knows. But the fact of the matter is that it is very common for our batsmen to have better averages at international level than at domestic level.
    We are number 1 in the world currently (or just about), because we have an absolutely fantastic bowling attack and so we are still winning tests, we dont need to panic about the batting. Just a little tinkering here and there, but not too much (why did we change so much for the second test vs eng this year!!!???) and we will unlock the runs, particularly as one guys form begins to bleed into the others' form. Not a bad idea to pop a Brevis or another promising youngster in there. Agree with Herch, would love to hear one of their opinions? I have heard a number of them desiring test cricket the most. Losing Quinny was a real blow but there is definitely enough talent about in the conveyer belt of sporting talent (our school system) to back up our ever green bowling attack. There is no crisis. Nobody panic!!! 😂

    • @frontofficeschools
      @frontofficeschools Před rokem

      As an aside I do agree with Ash's comment about CSA though. Regardless of talent floating about, if your admin is not in order, it can most definitely be wasted and conversely if on point, can be harnessed many times over. We have the feeder system, tis all good, the brains at the top need to rebuild probably more than anything else in the country, in fact, you might argue that we are seriously over achieving given the state of affairs. (Selecting overseas players is, rather ironically, as our rugby brothers will testify to, very much a GOOD thing - get Riley Rousouw back in there and watch our opponents run for cover!!!!).
