During this period of USSR gasoline was cheaper than water, so if your military engine consumed too much, you just installed one more gasoline tank on your vehicle. Thanks for your video! If your subscribers appreciate the story of this truck, I’d recommend to go through the story of ZIL-49061 “the blue bird”. Pretty rare and unique vehicle, made exclusively for the cosmonauts’ searching operations.
To me, Blue Bird became the extremum point of the Soviet engineering, such as Buran, Tu-144, An-225 Mria.

I don't think it's the price which counts - it's the weight and volume required to store it on the truck which makes it suitable or not.

  • @OleDiaBole

They did not choose two engines because they did not have engine strong enough, that is nonsense. They did it on purpose to eliminate differential slip. Loss of grip of one wheel on left or right side had zero effect on traction of other wheels.
I have driven ZIL in Bosnian army, it was completely unstopable, no matter the mud or upslope.

No suspension, bad idea. It put extra stress to vehicles body and transmission and is bad to road too, tires cutting trough soil leave soon deep grooves and lesser vehicles has bad day. And as tell in video, its dangerous any faster than 20 km/h. Many tractors has this feature and they run like kangaroos until fall from road.

This is not entirely true; the ZIL-135 has suspension on the outer axles, and the shear axles are rigidly fixed. It's just that the frame of this car is extremely rigid and the suspension function seems to be absent.
