    What I love about Yin and Yang philosophy is that you can only be aware of something by contrast. So when youre feeling anxious you can realize that this anxiety can only exist against a background of peace, otherwise you wouldn't be able to notice it. So just like you can listen to the silence beneath sound, you can be aware of the peace beneath your fear.

    • @rudy8409
      @rudy8409 Před 6 lety +37

      u hit the nail on the head on that one. a musical symphony requires moments of silence beneath the sounds in order to give it flow. so in the same way, death is an essential part of life like the silence between the notes. death is needed to make room for more life. and if this is the case than surely life and death are only temporary.

      ARNAB DAS Isn't it obvious? The East has been focusing on spirituality....the inner world, whereas the West has been doing the opposite, focusing on the material world and science. Remember, the key to everything is balance. If we want to create a harmonious world, we are going to need both. Spirituality + Science.

    • @arnabdas7019
      @arnabdas7019 Před 6 lety +34

      hmm. Well I am from the east and let me tell you bro the people I see are even less spiritual than the westerners i see in hollywood movies. sure people of the east have some notion of spirituality in them but they never actualize it in life. we want to be like america so much that you cannot even understand. our "healthier view" as Frank says is non-existent for the last 70 years. for me i can say i am confused. i do not know what i want.

      @arnabdas7019 Před 6 lety +16

    I live in the U.S. and it's a scary place. I identify with taoism and am a peaceful person, but one cannot simply tolerate everything...in taoist teachings, how does one know when and how to act, react, resist, and protect? When society and the whole planet are unbalanced, how can balance be restored?

      To see that all life is guiding me in doing all that I do, at the time and manner meant to be done. All occurrences are as meant to be. Universal repulsion/attraction energy guides me from/to my compatibility. To see this is to be alert and present, and capable of responding proactively and cooperatively, instead of re-acting competitively. As I see life 'choosing' for me,, passivity? Quite the contrary. I am with the highest quality of efficiency in ability to 'do' all that I do. What I am doing is then realized as my true and authentic interests, desires, wants, hopes, wishes and needs. THAT S manifestation! Ego? A bolt of lightning killed a young tree! That s ego! It s ok to call it ego, as long as it is not embraced to be only a human inefficiency. Believing only humans to be afflicted, separate/distinct from all other lifes thing/beings I S suffering!

    • @geffreybolster3780
      @geffreybolster3780 Před 6 lety +26

      You see? 'tollerating' in this manner can be resistance, in that it is passivity. Tao provides awareness acceptance for one to be with full presence to respond cooperatively. This may mean calling the police, intervening, retreating or whatever. The point is,- the response is with balanced awareness/acceptance. No wrong/right, just response via the universes (Tao) repulsion/attraction energy guiding you from/to compatibility. See?

    • @geffreybolster3780
      @geffreybolster3780 Před 6 lety +6

      All that occurs is communication to you via actions, thoughts and words (like when a glass tips over and spills etc, its communicating to you the efficiency of your interactions, which expands/illuminates your intent and sincerity) for the purpose of repelling you away from or attracting you to, in part or whole, what you re compatible with. Like two water molecules attracted, a water/oil molecule repelled, two people , . etc. Personally, geograghically and so on. All life (Tao, universe, God, spirit,.) guides all life to where their compatible with, for the purpose of expansion. all are guided where they need to be. See?

    • @geffreybolster3780
      @geffreybolster3780 Před 6 lety +14

      So, you are life. As life you are not broken/screwed up/separate/distinct from all other lifes things and beings. All that happens is exactly as meant to be. All that you do, you agree, it agrees and so do I. For all life has you do all that you do, at the time and manner meant to be done. All life is assisting you in doing all that you are tasked (intent) with doing,- breathing, heartbeat, eating, sleeping, walking, thinking etc. When you bump your head, the object, your head and all involved are actually communicating to you life source energy for the purpose of your expansion. Everything is alive! Before grabbing that door handle, see into it, past all the star systems, see our earth and you!, looking at the door handle. This enhances the illumination of your intent and sincerity. Which then does same for A L L life! See?

    There is a time for everything,
    and a season for every activity under the heavens:
    a time to be born and a time to die,
    a time to plant and a time to uproot,
    a time to kill and a time to heal,
    a time to tear down and a time to build,

    Master Gu is fluent in English and has always seen it as his life mission to share the healing Taoist arts of Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Meditation with the world. He shared with me his vision to create not only online courses, but an online Academy.
    I was excited by this vision and shared how I could use my filmmaking and inter-web skillz to make it happen.
    We then had a cup of tea and Master Gu sang Chinese opera while playing the guitar… 🤠☯
    We are really proud of what we have built. We now are a 16-person team from 7 countries and we are on a mission to create films, communities and transformative education to help people and planet live in balance.

    Hey man, I just wanted to say that I love what your doing. I love how your videos hold much authenticity and honesty. I also appreciate the dream you have to spread peace with this culture. Here in the west, I'm finding it difficult to be around people who aren't interested in looking for purpose or at least appear that way. Everyone is a sceptic about new techniques I have to share and that's totally valid, I guess.
    There's this conflict I have between "being there for people - helping them find fulfilment" but being aware that these people don't show love back which is hard because it takes a lot of energy.
    There's a part of me that says that writing this is unnecessary. That it is merely keeping me in these low spirits. However, I do value what I am feeling at the moment. I am in a reflective mood. The day was very full on - not what I'm used to. I was happy to socialise and felt I was able to connect with people more but...maybe it's just new to me.
    I want to keep trying to reinforce my own purpose. I don't want to forget my new year's resolutions and all the work I've done to build who I am today. I realise that change takes time and that is important. Hahaha I guess it's all part of the fun huh. You know, maybe this is a type of help to the world. I suppose it's a sort of manifestation of what I want for the future of the world and my world.
    Should the only reason I want a change in my life be that there is a problem that needs fixing? No. I have needs, as humans do. I want to do my best to suffice my needs. Sometimes I forget that they are even needs - and this is all part of the process of life.
    What does the future look like for a growing soul? I don't know everything - or do I? How does one know something to be true? Data is useful for the surface matters of life, in fact, I don't disregard data in any way. Data is just a form of information in a form that expresses the idea's true form (as best we can at least). I think the trap is how that data is interpreted.
    Am I overthinking? No. Partly. I don't care.. :)

    Man this whole series of videos is great !
    I got interested in Daoism after some readings on European Stoicism and I find there are a lot of similarities between the two worldviews. But Daoism have that poetic joyness about it that just make it my favourite way of apprehending life
    I have been reading Laozi, Zhuangzi & Liezi on my own for the past couple of years and watching conferences about Daoism. But to learn about it from a chinese master in chinese mountains woah ! You took that to a whole other level :)
    I would have a suggestion of a question maybe for a next video. I feel like Daoism is a beautiful philosophy when you live in quiet retired place, a small village for example. However, sometimes applying this general benevolence and non-intervention (wuwei) can be pretty hard (dangerous?) when you live in modern big cities within the Western world. It might lead you to let people take advantage of you. So I guess my question would go something like: How to concile a Daoist way of living in a big city full of non-Daoist people ? Does not it make you a pray to malicious behaviors ?
    Maybe the answer is just to go live a simpler life closer to nature.
    Anyway, great concept, love it. Keep up the great work and many thanks to Master Gu & yourself George.
    Cheers from France !

      Great question Charlie. I do think that adding some elements of stoicism and reducing unnecessary desires (not completely ignoring your needs of survivorship and socialization) toward the materialistic world can help you find a better balance in this secular and competitive society. Eating more vegetable less meat, applying a regular daily regime, meditating, spending time with people who brought positive energy are all good starts.

    What I found beautiful about Daoism is its simplicity and practicality for everyday people. I have an interest in spirituality and have played the role of a seeker for many years. Having studied some Kabbalah, Sufism, Mystical Christianity, Chan, Vedanta, etc. I have discovered, like many others have before me, that the inner core of all of these vehicles harmony with an unknowable force (Void, Brahman, Logos, Ein Sof, Allah, etc.) The goal is to harmonize with the unknowable source of All. In Mystical Christianity it is called Theosis, in Daoism, it is to be in harmony with the Way, in Buddhism it is enlightenment, and in Vedanta it is Moksha. What I love about the Taoist Way is that, whereas all of the pageantries of the other faiths are beautiful in their imagery and mythology; the directness of the Dao is so simple and straightforward it takes much less time to begin the journey towards discovering ourselves than do vehicles with elaborate imagery and metaphysical claims. Thank you for posting this video.

    The yin yang is drawn in such a way as to emphasize to us the dynamic of an ever evolving opposite forces.
    We must not be mislead that it is a perfect balance because if it is a perfect balance, then, the black and white should be split straight in the center and should look stagnant.
    The reason it is ever evolving is because precisely it is not balance. The yang, or the positive force is always slightly, ever so slightly stronger than the yin or the negative force.
    The dynamic is caused by the yin, the negative trying to chase after the yang the positive force to equalize it. But without success . Therefore that explain the constant chase.
    If it is a complete balance, then the good will never ever overcome the evil.
    Understanding this basic concept will allows us to appreciate all religion . The whole order of nature. To understand the fact that if something terrible happens , given time it will all be healed, by the power of the yang, the positive force.

      You are arguing with definitions. The Dao spawned yin and yang for the very reason to be opposites. If they weren't, the whole thing wouldn't work. Where yang expands, yin HAS to shrink. They don't hold hands and agree to both prosper together.v They are beyond any analogous interpretation like warring factions or such.

    The Tao doesn t 'teach' passivity in the form of non cooperative 'tollerance'. Awareness of life (Tao, God, spirit, universe,.) is seeing that all life guides all life in doing e x a c t l y as meant to be done, at the time and manner meant! As one embraces this, it is not passivity. Actually quite the contrary! As one sees life guiding them in all that they (and others) do, this illuminates within them the highest quality of efficiency within their ability to do all that they re guided in doing. This then becomes their revealed/realized true and authentic interests. It I s their wish, want, hope, desire and need. They then see life repelling/attracting them from/to their compatibility!!!, socially, academically, professionally, romantically and and and. One is left with a full presence to respond cooperatively instead of only a partial presence to react competitivelly. this may mean intervening, calling the police, retreating ,. See?

    Instead of simply trying to find a balance between yin and yang (a western cliché), Daoism is more about trying to reach Dao, which is sometimes called "pure yang". The Yinyang school was different from the Daoist school in the warring state period. The yinyang symbol (taiji tu) was actually created by the neo-confucian school of thought. The specificity of Daoism is not the naive, simplistic and somewhat cliché notion of Yin and Yang as two opposite forces in balance in the universe but rather to transcends it and find what is beyong the changes of yin and yang... this is actually daoism.

    Understanding the differences between East and west schools of thought has been a cleansing process for me. Ironically, it would compliment the yin in the yang and the yang in the yin, but there needs balance and harmony.
    Also the current state of social media or culture in the west has become extremely polarized. It’s ALL right or ALL wrong, no in between on anything. I think that’s one point of frustration for me. This isn’t even a political observation but more of a cultural one.
    In order to help supplement the imbalance I used Taoist teaching and Dialectal Behavior Therapy. I found it very useful in my personal life both mentally and spiritually. I’m also a person in long term recovery from substances for over 8 years so the more tools at my disposal from two schools of thought have only benefitted me. Thank you for allowing me to share my experience here and best to everyone. ☯️ 🤍 🖤

    I love it.. I tried my best to study this philosophy back when I was going to community college, I took this philosophy course, but never could really grasp this yin yang concept until I got older.. I now see that everything we see in nature (trees and plants, animals) represent ourselves (in a way) and that we all are a part of this eternal system, that we interpret as ‘life’.... maybe we never truely die... I’m inclined to think so anyway

    Master Gu said it best when he mentioned that "without light, there is no shadow". I have heard another version that states "light exists by the grace of shadow". Balance is important in both and George highlighted that in the West, we typically only focus on the light and try to suppress the dark. The truth is, in your darkness, you find your light. Whatever it is that you are struggling with, if you have the courage to dive into it, you will find the seed of light. Your greatest weakness can become your greatest strength. An example is a sensitivity. Sensitivity is seen as a weakness, but if understood and channeled properly, you become highly aware and conscious of people and situations.
    The Yin Yan symbol and philosophy invites us to invite, accept and embrace the parts of ourselves we don't like. Once we do, we find more love, balance, and purpose than we ever have.

    Hi George, this was very helpful. I identify as Buddhist but have always been very attracted by the Eastern philosophies. A key concept in Buddhism is acceptance and I think most people (myself included) struggle with that as an approach to life because it can seem too close to being passive or even weak. Trust on the other hand is an active and faithful stance to take in the face of suffering I.e. trust that the universe is always changing, that nothing stays the same or persists; misfortune, sickness, sadness. Thank you.
