  • What's inside a lava lamp? They're not meant to be opened, but if you do pop off the cap, you’ll find paraffin wax, water, and some mystery chemicals that are essential for making the wax - or lava - rise and fall.

Parrafin wax melted at low temperature and perchloroethylene is added to change both the chemical structure as well as the density of the wax. (That is why a bottle of PE weighs more at around 1.6units than the same bottle of water at around 1 unit)
This is why the wax is mushymushy. PE is used in dry cleaning.
The water part of the lamp is purified / distilled / deionized water. A miniscule amount of a chemical such as dishsoap is added to break surface tension... i am talking drop for drop of the soap os added until the wax actually "lifts" off the bottom when heated..
Adding too much of the soap will turn the water cloudy and the lamp won't work. Adding too little will do absolutely nothing either.
There was a recipe for this on the internet which i had found back in 2005, but whether it is still out there is the question.
Please do remember that a lava lamp is not a child's toy, but actually a highly balanced science experiment. All ingredients and components have to be perfectly balanced in order for the lava to fuction properly.
Poor or improper heating / type of coil used inside the bottle is also a major factor.
