How to Fix Right Joycon Drift Step by Step with a $11 Amazon Analog Joystick Kit (tools included)

- In this video we do a right joycon drift repair. We go over the tools that we ordered as well as the process for the joy-con fix. The Nintendo Switch analog drift is caused by wear and tear and dust getting into the controller causing it to move without pressing anything. Its extremely frustrating to have the dreaded joy con drift but its really not that hard to fix as you will see in this step by step video. I really liked this all in one repair kit that comes with all the necessary tool for a low price with amazon prime. Feel free to ask any questions about the right joycon drift repair and let me know if you want to see me fix a left joycon =)

Gotta Love this guy hearting and pinning all the people succeeding and not the people who broke their battery connector cause he wasn't clear enough
It's hard to heart things that aren't done carefully and end in regret. ♥️
After people had issues with the battery connector, you could've re-uploaded the video with an edit. I'm another one who ripped the base of the battery connector out. Thanks
@@sephiron688 Yeah, I downvoted the video. If you watch closely just before he "removes" the battery, he edited the video at that point, cutting something out of his process to make it seem like you can just slip a spudger right under the battery.
Video was perfectly clear enough for me, removed my battery connector just fine exactly as he did it. I guess some people don't watch ahead to make sure they know what is coming and/or use the proper care. Great video, thanks ❤
Just wanted to add that after replacing the analog stick and when you are checking for drift, there are some instances where it does not go EXACTLY back to the center and could be off-centered by a slight bit. I found that calibrating the analog stick from that page by pressing "X" fixes this in many cases. I thought I had a few defective ones, but turns on calibration is all that is needed.
Yeah this happened to me to
So glad I read this comment Happened to 1 of the 4 I fixed and I thought it as defective. Thanks a bunch. :D
Thank you SO much for this tutorial. After 3 days of use, my R joystick completely snapped off my brand new Switch and I was devastated. Nintendo was going to charge $40 to repair it, and it wasn’t guaranteed I would get my special edition Animal Crossing color control back. I decided to take a shot ordering a Fix It repair kit with a spare joystick and there is NO WAY I could’ve done it without your tutorial. Even down to the ZR button falling out. You showed me how to walk through every single step. I saved myself tons of money and stress. I can’t thank you enough!!!!!
(Just as a side note for anyone curious - the only step I was too nervous to attempt was unhooking the battery. So I left the battery pack plugged in the whole time, but was able to complete every other step. I know it’s probably safer to unplug it, but if you’re careful it should be fine!)
Oh good! I'm happy to help 😊
I always get nervous doing electronics repairs, but this was really easy to follow, even for the left joycon. Now I have working controllers again hooray, thanks :)
Awesome! Good work on that ☺️
Little hack for those pesky ribbons cables not going back in: Attach a piece of tape (teflon preferred, scotch is fine) to the neck area, and use the tape as your lever for putting it back in. Adds no stress to the cable and no risk of bending it.
Great tutorial, OP!
I ended up breaking a joycon stick last night while I was playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. I was searching around for replacement joycons when I found this video and I thought that this would be a much cheaper solution than buying a brand new pair. I never knew such kits exist, so this is a lifesaver for me.
Fantastic instructions. I've been doing electronics for 40 years but couldn't have fixed my nephew's controller without your instructions. The people in the factory making these must have tiny hands! For others - just take your time and don't force anything and use the correct tools. And watch the whole video before starting.
Happy to help, very kind words coming from a veteran of experience 🙏🙏
They’re Japanese, so, yeah, they do have tiny hands!
Thank you, I just finished fixing my joy-con. Most videos cover the left one, as it is the most common one, and because both joy-cons are not mirror copies I was afraid of messing something up, but hearing you step by step was really helpful and reassuring. Thank you very much!
This was a good video. As for the battery connector, I guess it's best to say to pull up when removing it. I was unsure of which way to pull and scared I may pull the wires out.
Yes it snaps in from the top, so removal by pulling up. I never thought it would be such an issue 😳
I just snapped the entire connector out of the controller for the battery. So note, don't waste the time to remove it, just leave it connected, just move it
@@thegingerviking8698 that just happened to me! So pissed right now. It wasn’t very clear in the video that there wires from the battery sat in another housing thing. What a waste
@@Buckethead523 How did you get the base back onto the mother board? Same thing happened to me and I pulled the base right off of the mother board
@@thegingerviking8698 Were you able to attack it back onto the motherboard? Same thing happened to me.
Those little joysticks caps are awesome. I use them on my ps4 controller after the original one ripped. Big improvement on grip
I like the so far, adds a little color too haha.
Thank you SO MUCH! 47 y. o. woman here, managed to repair mine seamlessly following your instructions.
This video was absolutely amazing and allowed me to fix the left Joycon as easily as you fixed the right. Thank you
Awesome, Im happy to have helped =)
Does it still drift?
@@EmmureMARIO64 not yet :D
@@JiraiyaXEroSennin drift yet?
@@untitleddragon7322 zero drift
absolute lifesaver of a video, I was worried if mess it up, but I managed to get it to work and now I can fix more joycons, even for my friends!!!
I did it!!! I did the left one and followed along. I have never done a repair like this- thank you so much for the video and making it look easy (even as i was freaking out lol).
Yay, I'm glad surgery was a success. Level up 🎉🙌

Just fixed both my joy cons with this video's help. Thank you. Opted to not disconnect power and carefully set battery aside and it was fine. Left joy con has a thin tricky ribbon cable over one of the c stick screws, but I unscrewed the bit it was connected to (and it as well has a ribbon with little to no give so it can't be moved much!) And it allowed enough slack to get to the screw without damaging anything.
Was surprised at how seemingly little the c stick ribbon cable plugs into the assembly bit with the black latch. Kept trying to poke more inside of it but it wasn't necessary.
Thanks again for a clear video. Stoked for some tears of the kingdom without crushing my controls in frustration at drift. WE'RE BACK BABY!
Glad you got it fixed. You are very welcome 🤝
Very good video, each step was detailed and explained, allowing viewers to follow along easily. My controller has been repaired with your help, thanks man.
You are very welcome. Appreciate you reaching out to say thanks 🙏
This video was spot on!! I was able to make this repair for my kids. The challenge was so worth it. Thank you so much for your video!!
You are welcome. Glad you were able to get it going 💪🙌
Just did this for the first time, thank you so much, you made it easier then I thought,
I also really appreciate the zoomed in image
great video finally got a stick fixed after getting the confidence to do it. was scared i would break it but when i tried it it was actually really easy, also i didnt feel like pulling the battery out because i thought i would tear the cables so i just left it connected and did the procedure and it was still fine.
Good work! Glad you got it going
Great video. Bought the kit from the link but it showed up with different stuff in it (granted it is a year+ later) but it still worked just fine. I fixed my left joycon which was a little different from the video but I wouldn't even have tried the repair without the video
I recommend not removing the battery clip as you could break it. Otherwise great vid.
😬 if you don't remove the battery you potentially risk shorting out the board if something wrong touches something else wrong.
I just removed it but mine was supposed to be pulled out..... I just ripped the battery connector out. This vid wasn’t super clear and must have been a different model.... wish I knew that before hand
@@ssshampoo ya same here but it still works on hand held so it’s a win for me
@@ssshampoo Same, the battery part was the most annoying part, I would say.
@@ssshampoo There is an English guy that was very clear. The right joycon is much easier than the left. You don't need do disconnect the battery. Just use the the plastic stuff with the hook to pry it out of the case and rest on the right side. After unscrewing the 3 cross head screws you only have that one little joystick ribbon with the clip that secures it . Use the plastic tool with the little hook and bring it back to release the ribbon. Unscrew the 2 joystick screws and gently remove it from the socket. Push in the ribbon of the new joystick to the gold line on the case and pull that clip forward to secure it then screw in the 2 screws. Gently put the the little antenna in the slot and then screw back battery case , put in back battery then outer case.
my repairs to both joycons went fine, thanks for the shoulder button tips. in longevity news, the joystick from this pack lasted about a year before developing the opposite problem to drifting, as in, now i cannot calibrate it at all in settings because the dead zone is enormous and the input doesn't go far enough to the right to register. the entire stick is off by one calibration circle to the left. the stick itself has developed a fault. just an fyi for folks wondering about longevity of this repair kit.
Thank you soooo much for this video! Very carefully & respectfully instructed! We, your viewers really appreciate you for your specific content & creation. ✌😁🤙🎮🕹
bought the kit off amazon. thank you. that kit has literally everything you need. had i watched this video first i would have used your referal link. i initially just bought it thinking i could just figure it out. the pictogram instructions were straightforward until removing/re-installing that ribbon cable. also, thanks for the quick tidbit about the trigger. this video saved me $80 on new controllers. have a happy kid again. Thanks Man.
You are welcome. Glad you were able to level up and keep the kiddo happy and also save some money. Keep on learning 🤝
I really like that this man demonstrated how joy-con would drift at 0:30. Amusing as heck.
Thank you for posting was able to repair both of the joycon sticks, Hopefully the repair will last a bit of time. Thanks agin for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for watching 😊 and you are very welcome.
I'm an electrical engineer and I found this video invaluable. I'd already purchased the kit which is great value for money, £12 here in the uk on amazon!. Thanks fella for the vid!
I just tried this, but go the kit and parts off of Etsy. This is a great tutorial and works for the left joy-con as well. Thanks!
THANK YOU! I just spent the last hour trying to connect a extra long analog ribbon cable from the replacement analog and thought it had to go in more so i almost hopefully didn't break it but thank you.
Thanks for the help. Repaired the right first. Then saw the left had a screw under a ribbon. Everything worked in the end.
Thank you so much! I ordered the kit yesterday and I got it today and now my boys are back at it! Saved so much money and time! 🤗
Oh good! I bet that was a fun project with happy kiddos afterwards!
Yes! we missed fortnite. Thank you again!
You are very welcome ☺️
Fuccccc I accidentally broke off the little thing where you stick the battery in while unplugging it
Worked a treat! All the way from sunny 🇬🇧 Thanks bro!!
Very informative! A lot of info that was covered may not be covered in other videos. Once my kits arrives I will be referring back to this video just in case I run into problems. Tyvm
You are welcome, happy to help
Omg I somehow managed to fix it with your guide. Most of the guides were for the left joycon, but this was so helpful to replace my right one, as my stick kept making an annoying clicky sound. My hands were shaking so much tho 😅😅.
Definitely helpful! And super easy and straight to the point. Many thanks~~
You are welcome =)
Brilliant instructions, and successful repair! The tip about how to slide the connector into place was particularly inspired! Thanks a million 😊
Glad it helped 🤝
Followed video to a "t". And it was tedious but doable and I feel so accomplished. I bought my materials ;sticks that can with tools from micro center for ten bucks. I bought a mini organizer box to hold screws. I also bought an I fixit prying and opening tool assortment kit. Omg what a relief. I followed another video for the left joy con ! Amen for both videos!!! Doing right joy con first made the left easier because I somewhat knew what to do/ expected. Except there was some difference. Can't thank you enough!! Ubreakifix woulda costed me thirty per joy con if I remember correctly
Good work! Build that confidence 💪
Thank you! I ordered the kit and followed your directions. it worked!
Thank you for this! Very useful even for a relatively newer model. Only problem I had was reattaching some ribbons 👍
Anyone else break the battery while attempting this, no just me???...awesome! 👍👍
I think i did! Mine doesn’t charge anymore
Thanks very much for the tutorial saved me a lot of headache and time!
This was very simple and understandable, thanks for the help!
You are welcome 🙂
This was a big help. The walk through was very thorough 👍
Appreciate it 🙏 thanks for watching
So so helpful. Thank you! 🙏
Thanks I just fixed my right joy-con with this video great info to learn from.
Thanks for the video. It helped me fix my own joy con issue. Though I did it really slowly to avoid messing something up. But it came out ok in the end.
Good work 💪 🙌 happy to help.
Great detailed explanation bro. Thanks 🙌🏻🤩
The entire battery part came off mine, like the black part the battery reattaches (or snaps) back into! I don't know what to do now ☹️
Thanks much for the assist! Everything came together pretty well (except for plugging in the battery, that was like microsurgery...), but the strange thing is that the old thumbstick in the Joycon was falling apart when I opened the case. After unscrewing it, it just disintegrated. Are they always this flimsy?
I followed the instructions in the video and fixed my red joycon.
But i didn't remove the battery from the motherboard and i removed the stick's cap to decrease it's diameter and have it pass easily from the hole.
Thanks for the video!
You are welcome. Happy to hear surgery was a success 🙌😷
Your video helped me so much with my first joycon replacement. Thank you so much!!
Woohoo! You are very welcome.
Thanks to your in depth video, I successfully swapped the joystick on my third time. 1st and 2nd were unsuccessful because the r button popped right of the motherboard. 😔 Thanks again! ❤
Thank you! I did it with the help of your detailed tutorial!
If you don't have supplies or tools, try removing your controllers, and go to "find controllers" and hold down the screen for the vibration and move your control stick while spinning your hand. Do that for a minute then check back on the calibration selection to test if it worked.
It's the graphite that causes the drift, a dust like material after wearing down the contacts, so the vibration probably shakes the dust into another area where it doesn't do as much unwanted inputs.
Definitely worth a try =)
And you just have to clean it with a qtip soaked with a cleaning solution.
Thanks! This vid was really helpful i hope more people watch this. It’s not confusing
Oh good, happy to help 😊
Thank you for the instruction. I already had to do that with both Joycons on my Switch (considering how common this issue is, the name joy-CON may be very correct).
One thing caused me much more trouble than the video suggests - the outside screws. Each joycon had one screw that didn't want to move even a bit (the bottom one on the outer side in both cases) so I had to drill through them.
Anyways I managed to fix both and everything's working perfectly now. I could just try to get Nintendo to fix them instead, but they don't have an official service in my country and sending my joycon to another country would take very long and would probably cost me more than the repair kit, especially considering I'd have to do it twice.
Useful walkthrough, thank you!
Thank you so much for this they work perfectly, my right joycon is like brand new
Did it stop drifting?
Many thanks! Great video
Fixed in january 2021. Great tutorial great results, thank you a lot!
You are welcome please report back an update in a few months 🙏
Man they always make it look easy I’ve had my left one broken for a long time and I’m afraid to fix it as I’m worried I will damage it
Super helpful!! Thank you so much for making this video!
You are welcome
THANK YOU for actually DESCRIBING how to open the connectors
I didn't think I could do this without breaking my joycon but you saved me $80. Thank you so much. Link is no longer compelled to walk off ledges.
😆 glad you got it fixed up!
Very Good video.
Thanks you i fixed my right drifted analog on joycon.
Thank You. Greatings from Poland.
The best tutorial I've found so far. Well lit and explanations are short 👏

great video and you were straight to the point... helped alot!!
just done following your instructions! it works perfectly! a big thank from Italy!!! :)
Prego 🙌 glad surgery went well 💪
This worked! My Switch feels great now! Tysm for this awesome tutorial
You are very welcome. Glad surgery was a success 🙌
Cool video, helped me understand because I've never done something like this before 👍
I just got done looking at your tutor and man it's a life saver.. I went to eBay and got the one analog stick, the Phillip head screwdriver, the triwing screwdriver, 2 of those plastic things that help opens your controller up for $5.50.. It feels like a Xbox achievement popped up when I put it back together.. I can't lie I'm happy as hell with myself..
Good work dude. Real achievement, not a digital one. Welcome back to real life 🤝
@@thecollegepicker Thank You 🙏🏿❤️
Edited: Do you have a tutorial on how to replace an analog stick in a Switch Pro Controller??
Our battery connecter appeared to be much smaller then yours, but we got it connected with the battery unmounted. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the tutorial! Just fixed one set, and on to the next.
You are welcome. Happy to help ☺️
Thanks man, that was super helpful 👍 👌 👏
Thanks for the guide, this saved my Joy Cons!
Great video, this helped a lot!! However, I had to change it back to the old one that uses a lot of force to press down (that was the issue that needed replacement) as the amazon joystick doesn’t have motion control and I use that more in my Zelda TOTK gameplay for arrows than the pressing down for the scope.
Thank you for the tutorial. It worked!!!!
Oh this was useful. I was having trouble reconnecting the battery till I watched this. Thanks.
Power cable just broke apart before breaking off. Even after it's broke off im tring to see how it clips off and it don't. So much for a quick cheaper fix 🙄
Mine very almost did and was almost the scariest part for me. Unsure if I scratched off a bit of the plastic on the cable and worried it won't work now.
Scariest part was very almost chewing the screws because the well reviewed screwdriver I bought sucked and was damaged before I used it without me realising.
This fixed my left/blue joystick! Ordered the exact same product...now $12.99 but so worth it!
That's awesome, glad surgery went well 💪🙌
Tysm this really helped now i dont have to worry about looking down (in games) all the time
You are very welcome 🙂
Thank you very much!!! Nailed it
Thanks, easy to follow and straight to the point
You are welcome
Bro thanx alot for this video tutorial.. it safe me alot of money rather than buy new joycon.. keep up the good content bro.. salam from Indonesia 👍
All good! Thanks for the video!
Thank you. This gave me the confidence to do the repair kit. Made a very happy little girl. About 20 minutes following the video. 1st time messing with this tiny electronic stuff
You are welcome. Good work 🙂
10 out of ten great tutorial, works like q charm
This is a good tutorial but my my joycon has a very tight screw at the joystick then I spent hours trying to unscrew
Great work, easy to follow. Might need a magnifying glass to see half of it but this helps so much.
I wanna let you know that your video actually helped me fix my Joy Con. Thank you
You're welcome
It worked, thank you.
I sent back my joycon to nintendo the first time, but seeing your video got me to fix the other joycon that started malfunctioning.
I also pre-fixed my other joycon.
Glory to the cardboard.
You are welcome ☺️
I tried following this video for the left and wound up messing up my joycon permanently. Just make sure you follow the appropriate video for the appropriate side.
Thank for the video. Very informative. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
A little fast at times, but I Just kept rewinding and pausing.😉
Tried following the ifixit video and got stuck thinking a spudger/ pry tool was necessary to remove the battery; evidently not 🙄
Found your video after and completed the replacement on right joycon without hassle, even though I'm a less tech-savvy mum.😂
Thank you for the tutorial comrade! The new stick works great.
Glad to hear surgery went well 🙂
