The saddest thing about religious guilt and conformity is that it is so oppressive to young girls that instead of teaching them about their sexuality & bodies, they are put into the care of predatory people who take advantage of their naivete and insecurities, and yet, somehow still manage to shame them for events transpired that are not at all their fault. Scanlen is a gem, and I do not think the role could have been more perfectly casted.

Well said and expressed. I am disguated by these double standards and this perception and attitude held by the predators who are so weak and cowardly.
No person, male or female deserves treatment like this and for it to be done in the name of religion is shameful. Whats even worse is that this behaviour is unconsciously sanctioned by the people around the predators.

Our stories being retold in movies like this validates our experiences. From the first scene of this trailer, I was immediately transported back to my own youth. My neckline too low. Shorts a bit too high above the knee. Shoulders bared. Bra strap exposed. Do not cause your brother in Christ to sin. I am still working through it, some 20+ years later.

we had fairly normal religion in my home growing up. mom thought God understood if you needed to sleep in and relax on Sundays or go for a walk in the woods. Still she volunteered and was spiritual that was more hippy for the time than i realized. Dad went to church as a duty. his faith was more private and maleable. they were both protestants but dad "gave up" his religion and followed Moms.
The weird part is that I started questioning Christianity at 13, wondering out loud if it was the biggest hoax every played on humanity. I'm now a Thelemic, someone who kind of creates their own belief along the way through observation and experience. My sister on the other hand, is very devout. She had a Church of Christ Roommate when she moved for her fist job and kind of made that her own. Is about as far right as you can get.
I find it fascinating that there is such a broad difference between us. She has cast demons out of me. I told her I'd be lost without my voices. So its not a healthy relationship. Problem is that relatives are all very Christian so I'm the heathen. My sister has a very toxic side to her, THAT is what had affected me, but that doesn't matter because she shares their beliefs.
Religion can be good. Religion can be bad. I believe in love and kindness and empathy and goodness and character and integrity and honesty and respectfulness. I believe in doing my best to do no harm, and when i realize that I have done so without meaning to at any time past or present, I try to take responsibility. That doesnt' come from any religion.

Religious people believe in a fairy tale and they or so often sanctimonious and subtlety caustic to non-believers. The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. But most religious people have no idea why this is true.
Why not just read the Bible carefully and books on the True Bible and critiques of the Bible? And prayer for others never works in scientific studies by Christian Hospitals!!! Of course, nothing phases true believers.

I'm glad religion helps people and I would not interfere. But why shouldn't we mock Jesus, who wants to eternally torture good moral Agnostics? He supported slavery and knew nothing of Germ Theory! OK, I see, he was keeping all scientific knowledge of the future to himself because "god works in mysterious ways" though usually very cruel ways.
The people who know the Bible least are the ones who read it the most. Admit it - religious people feel that they are better than the rest of us. Special and privileged not "humble". It's easy to see the selfish nature of mankind dressed up as religion. If not for hoping to go to heaven and avoid imaginary hell, would religious folk act any better than the rest of us? Actually, all scientific studies show atheists and agnostics are as moral as the religious, but for serial killers and we do not give as much to charity as we are not bribed and begged every Sunday.

Religion is fine in that it's a guide that prevents some people from doing serious wrong. But when you look at the inhumanity of the teachings of religion up close, one finds huge problems, corruption, and bad dogma.
Thank you in advance for your time and good cheer!

True love starts from us, for us.
Without it we are just bottomless holes that devour every love that is given, without getting full.
So love yourself first, exactley how you were, are and will be.

the bible differentiates pure and impure religion [james 1:26-27] and it definitely condemns legalism such as this. hopefully these two scriptures can help you understand a bit more of what the bible actually promotes.
Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. [Colossians 2:20-23]
but with this in mind, the bible also talks about not using freedom in Christ as an excuse to sin against God:
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life... 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
[romans 6:1-4, 11-14]

@@emma-nemesis the bible differentiates pure and impure religion [james 1:26-27] and it definitely condemns legalism such as this. hopefully these two scriptures can help you understand a bit more of what the bible actually promotes.

Ok, ok, ok, OH KAY! We get it already, Hollywood… Christianity is bad. Here, watch… show of hands… who here in this comment section thinks Christianity is NOT, I repeat, NOT, the cause of ALL of the world’s problems? See, nobody raised their hands. You did your job. Everybody hates Christianity. Now that that’s out of the way… could you please make a non-formulaic movie that doesn’t pander or have Michael Bay-esq special effects? One that isn’t written by chimpanzees with tree branches for arms or directed by a 2x4 with googly eyes glued to it and wearing a beret? In other words… one that doesn’t suck?

I'll raise that hand. Christianity is not the cause of all the world's problems (and I'm not sure this is suggesting that) - but it, along with other religions, have a fair bit to answer to. I'm struggling as to whether you were triggered because you truly think, subject matter aside, this is a bad movie or whether you are just being defensive over the subject matter. If the latter, then I'd suggest "Hollywood" probably walked on egg shells over Christianity (among other religions) for long enough. These stories happen - they surely can and should be able to be presented?

    • @kymfortescue6737

I saw the film at Sundance, it's actually an incredibly nuanced and complex look at faith and Christianity, it's not anti-religion. I'd watch the film before making assumptions

@@kymfortescue6737 i've just had it up to here with the anti-religion movies. it's really predictable. i knew she was going to get shamed and the focus of the film would be on a pervy slightly older preacherman who seduces her and that everything would land on her as the woman. This was edgy and groundbreaking 50 years ago because you are right, hollywood walked on egg shells for too long. But it hasn't been new or different in a long old time. indeed, it reminds me of this other movie where a young religious lass gets pervo-ed by a preacherman, falls pregnant and does herself in and her brother or somebody kills the guy. Been there, seen that. What would be refreshingly different is if she'd been happy that boy showed interest, and then they'd navigated some challenge as a couple such as helping his sick mother or struggled to start a homestead or something-but remained united in their behaving decently towards each other. if i had a nickel for every time a film showed some muslim girl's or christian girl's or orthodox girl's oppressive upbringing and then her freedom and escape i'd be rich enough to start a hollywood studio and make movies where every person in the religious community was actually a good joe and they all worked together and behaved well and lived happily. i know none of the drama-addicts out there would watch it, but i'd watch it and that's good enough for me.
