appreciate it. the keyboard warriors don't bother me much. you can do a 30 min video and cover every aspect of something and everyone gets bored and dose not watch it or you can do a quick and dirty video that covers the basics enough to help someone threw there first time doing a job like this. some people will pick apart. i don't feel this is one of my best video's but its one of my more popular ones right now. i knew when i made this one that some people would pick it apart no biggie. ill probably do some more video's on breaks at some point covering topics like removing seized anchor pins and how to properly measure break adjustment ect for people that info.

      Warnings !!!
To all you guys that follow instructions of this “truck mechanic”
He did few major beginners mistakes on semi truck brake job !!!
      0. Take a look at 0:20-0:30 on his video. You can see that spring loop over roller is picking outside of brake shoes. When he installed at 1:45-2:00 that spring loop is inside of brake shoes ???? I’v seen many times that big single spring when opening while brake is applied is catching and pulling out that roller spring with roller inside and makes unfunctional brake?
      0. He didn’t check for free play on s-cam what is on trailer brakes very common
      0. At 5:40 of video I can see that brake drum is worn out. If you install new brake shoes on bad drum will waste 20-30% of shoes just to adjust to bad surface of the old drum
      0. Installing side springs with small screw driver can be risky. I’m using locking pliers so spring can’t fly out and hurt myself
      0. Those blue painted brake shoes are probably cheapest what he found. Never try to save money on your brake parts !!! Bottom line : I am diesel mechanic for a years , so I have seen many improper jobs like this one. I’m not saying that this guy is bad. Just be aware when see somebody on dry-way with hoody repairs semi truck.

Ball joint puller for the anchor pins. Heat on the spider is not the best unless u have to. Load up on the puller with your impact then use a mini sledge to hit the puller. Will come out every time with no heat. Just my 2 cents. Always good to try new tricks.

Best method for doing the anchor pins I've found is heating the spider red hot then using a ball joint press to pop out the pin. Then heat the sleeve red hot and try bending it up over itself near the slit on the sleeve. Takes an extra 15 minutes at most per axle

I have seen a few drag the trailer 30 feet before pushing the knob for the brakes on the trailer. I know tires take the brunt of the damage but what about brakes? If this continues on a regular basis would the brakes wear down from this? We have been going through tires like crazy cause of this.

Hey dude . I’ve been following you for a while now ,and you are super handy and smart . I have a 5 axle flatbed trialer , and every single brake on her don’t release Except the front lift axle brakes , so I am guessing my problem is behind the first lift axle air tank ,because I ran alcohol in it and I drained all the tanks ,and I didn’t seem to notice any alcohol coming out off my train valve except the very front lift axle tanks . I spent so much money on this trialer , and every shop tells me something different. I do work on my truck & trialer myself, and I did pull all wheels to check and there is nothing wrong . What happens is every time push my brakes regardless easy or hard they stick and keep heating up till they smoke . All brakes are adjusted according to the stroke length, I thought they tighten up in the beginning, but they don’t ,they just won’t release. The drag isn’t crazy , it feels like the brakes are holding about 10 -20 psi in pressure only . Something else .... everytime I pull my trialer parking brakes when I’m parked at my yard , the valve ( brakes valve on the trialer ) keeps leaking and then engages after about 20-30 seconds . Could that be my problem? It is not that cold in Ontario yet, but I heated up all off my trailers valves today ,and drained the tanks . I noticed black greasy moisture coming out of my tanks .

Bad s cam bushings can cause the shoes to drag. Return springs in the cans could be busted bad or gummed up valve could also be a cause.

Sounds like relay valve sticking not exhausting holding brakes on slightly

I just had new brakes shoes and drum installed on the front axel on my 1995 step deck trailer and initially I had them backed off 1/4 of a turn and when loaded braking is smooth but when empty I am having issues when them locking up when applied. So I backed them off a 1/2 of a turn and still have the same issue. So I went up to a full turn just to see if that would make any changes and they still lock up when empty.
    Any ideas of what’s happening?

That's the fastest I've seen them done, Great video. Any chance you would know where to get sleeper extension panels for a 2005 Peterbuilt 387..? 💛👍👍

I like how u use the screwdriver and the spring goes in. I've been using vise grips and it seems harder than you'r way. Thanks

Works well for me try it and see. Right size screw driver makes it a breeze to small and it's not stiff Enough to big and it's hard to get the hook turned into the hole.

Thanks for taking the time to make the videos. It's important to understand how our trucks operate. How and where do you buy the brake pads? Do you need to know sizes or beans off brakes?

you can eaither call the manufactures dealer (pete,kw,freightliner, greatdane ect.) with the vin number and they can give you the part number for the shoes, or you can just pull them off and run down to where ever you want to buy them and they can cross reference the part number stamped on the shoes. there is generally a core charge anyway. after you buy your first set of shoes for whatever your working on you can write the part number in a note pad so you have it for next time.

I've been wondering for a while what that rod and slot thing is on top of these slack adjusters, visible on the far one at 0:10. I know it rachets/ auto adjusts the slack adjuster, replaces the small arm behind the main connection to the brake chambers. But why is that adjustable? Doesn't the slack adjuster rachet 360 degrees? (as in the rectangular rod can be moved around the slack adjuster, as in why is that part adjustable and what difference does it make?).
