- The Cariboo Region in British Columbia has big lakes which produce trophy-sized kokanee up to 4 pounds. In summer 2020, I joined senior biologist Mike Ramsay for a couple of days of fishing at Deka Lake. Watch to see if we managed to get some big kokanee!

This is a really enjoyable video Rod. Well done. Can't wait to spend the summer weekends on the Fishing Highway with our new Lund! This video makes me anticipate it even more!
Thank you Katy! It makes me very happy to hear that. 😊 Summer is just around the corner, I am so looking forward to lake fishing in the next several months.
speaking of flashers, i know someone who refuses to use them because she
said they take the bite away from the lure too many times and a lot of
the "lost" fish were actually fish pulling out of the clip by hanging
onto the dodger. She had a very successful charter business with
almost all repeat business. She was never afraid to try things others
weren't doing like no dodger, going 2-3 times deeper than most would go,
and caught salmon on bass tube jigs for years. She's retired now so
i'm giving away her secrets a few at a time. hahah.
I'm looking forward to a trip planned for this summer to Moosehaven Resort near Deka. I'm looking forward to your video tonight, thanks Rod!
That's great. Russ the resort owner is excellent and really takes pride of his place, always spending so much time upkeeping it. The kokanee fishing in front of the resort at Hathaway is pretty good from what I remember. There are also quite a few smaller lakes to venture to for trout. Just make sure you bring bug repellant up, the mosquitoes can be really unforgiving there (the whole region in general).
Owners at Moosehaven are amazing, friendly and work hard to ensure your stay is memorable
Amazing video rod looked like really nice size kokanee!!! Definitally want to catch them soon!!!
Thanks Ethan! 😃
I’ve been subscribed for quite a long time and I just wanted to say that you put out awesome videos! I just wanted to say that I absolutely loved when you made trout videos like when you caught them with salmon eggs under a bobber and stuff like that!
Keep up the great videos!!
Thank you Tyler! Actually I was just looking at these new fresh jars of eggs I got from Pautzke and planning out another float fishing video. :)
@@FishingwithRod That’s awesome can’t wait!!
Mike is a great guide.
Love your vids , thank you
Thanks for watching!
Sweet vid! Those are some healthy looking Kokanee , can’t believe the size of em.
These were actually considered the smaller ones for this stock. Like Mike said in the video, during a good year, they can reach as much as 4lb, which would be almost twice as big as these!
Great vid Rod!
Thanks!
Well done Rod. I can't wait for open water.
Soon! Thanks for watching fougere Family! :D
Hi Rod, great video as always! I'd definitely be interested to see a video on your thoughts on hatcheries, and whether they are beneficial or harmful to fisheries in the grand scheme of things. Definitely an interesting topic to me. Cheers!
Thanks. You'll see references to the hatchery topics in future videos for sure. It isn't a black and white issue, hatchery is just one approach to mitigate the damages we've done on the fish stocks. A little bit of it would give them bit of a boost. Too much of it would have the reverse effect.
Omg, I am heading in this year!! Btw amazing video!!
I told you that you need to go lol.
Love your vids 🤙
Thanks!
Loved this video!! Those kokanee at the end were gorgeous fish!! But you never told us how the little lake trout tasted🤔
Yeah I was enjoying it so much I forgot to talk about that part hahaha.... That lake trout was really good too! Or maybe I was just starving after not eating all day while focusing on landing fish.... ;)
Good video. The ones that get away (there are many) is my catch and release. Although if I do manage to catch a trophy lake trout, I'll probably throw it back in.
Great episode Rod!
Have you ever thought about going to Kootenay lake for a kokanee and Gerrard rainbow trout trip?
Thank you Clark, yep that's just one of many on the list hehe... We'll get there eventually. Thanks for watching!
I fish for kokes on Allouette and sometimes make the trip up to kawkawa, but the red meat on those caribou kokes is amazing looking got to get up there!
My first impression of how kokanee taste many years ago was probably a 6 or 7 out of 10, and those fish were from Kawkawa Lake, therefore I had never been too excited about it. These fish from Deka and other deep lakes in the Cariboo region, not only does their flesh look great, they taste ridiculously good. I was first told that they in fact make excellent sashimi, and I was skeptical but was pleasantly surprised once I tried some. I give them easily a 9 or 10 out of 10.
Catch n cook kokanee too, Rod! 😋
For sure there’ll be more of it this year! 😋 The kokanee from these lakes in the Cariboo region, without exaggeration, actually taste better than most salmon! I was quite blown away by it.
great catches but please keep your rod tip up in the air instead of straight out towards the fish. the rod is a shock absorber and you wont loose as many fish. take care
👍
Great video Rod! Have you ever caught any Kokanee in Kawkawa Lake?
Yep, there are quite a few Kawkawa Lake kokanee videos on this channel actually. czcams.com/video/vhaP05-f3J4/video.html
man Rod you are quick when fish is on, jumping over for the strike. You make me seem like the lazy fisherman, when a fish strikes on my kayak I take my time to reach for the rod.
I guess I get excited sometimes.... ;)
@@FishingwithRod haha funny and I kind of wish some of my friends would react like that when fishing from shore. Keep up the awesome videos
I find grabbing the rod too fast trolling for kokanee pulls them off sometimes....I let them run for 2 to 3 seconds before grabbing....usually stay on
what is the brand of that long telescoping net Rod? i can't seem to find anything like it searching online.
I was surprised to see a tri-hook. I thought they were not to be used? Can you up date us on that? Nice fish. I love the deep red of Kokanee.
Unlike rivers in BC, treble and barbed hooks can be used in most lakes. Some lakes only permit the use of single barbless, and those would be specified in the regulations under those lakes in the water-specific table.
and that's a kokanee specific rod you're using? a Lamiglas?
hey rod im curious to what kind of "lake trout" that is. Never seen that before.
Salvelinus namaycush
Rod is wondering why he can’t get the $100! Dang it!
Lol... That was like ten Big Mac meals swimming away in front of my eyes... 😆
I have 10 acres at bridge lake up there...good kokanee but slower than deka
10 acres! :) Very nice. We haven't done a feature on Bridge yet, was hoping this year but it doesn't look like I'll be able to fit it in the schedule while I am up there later this spring.
@@FishingwithRod i met you once at berry's in Richmond.......I do their pest control and am friends with Len and the boys.
They call me Brad the rat guy lol.....17 years pest control...used to be called Brad the Butcher.....15 years meat cutter
Love Len and all the others at Berry’s! I think the first time I set foot in there was 1995. 😮 See you again Brad, maybe up at Bridge. 🙂
What kokanee rods do you use
I have Shimano Talora Kokanee rods now.

Where specifically can I fish for coho in the Fraser river
www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/estuary_fishing/tidal_fraser_river_fall_salmon_fishery.html
I would check the regulation updates as no coho salmon fishing openings are expected until early November.
@@FishingwithRod thanks!
you got screwed Rod, you had $100 in the bag
🤣 I was forced to give it back to the pool so the commoners can claim the prize. 🤣
@@FishingwithRod here I thought you paid for a fishing trip and got robbed with the prize fish lol
@@user-cm7hs2we9l lol no... These videos/trips you see are basically my full-time job (a fun one regardless!) so I consider myself behind-the-scene in these tagging programs. :)
People please try something other than corn it killing are fish.
No, corn doesn't kill fish.
How dude? It's not like he's chumming the water for carp.....kokanee are usually kept so what's the difference?
