Spring fishing in Kawkawa lake BC. Landlocked Coho vs Kokanee!? What's the difference?

  • Hello and welcome to my channel,
On this episode we visit Kawkawa lake, BC in early spring.
We were met with many coho, though our target was kokanee.
I found it odd that kokanee (landlocked salmon) are noted in the regulations but coho are not? Are they landlocked, or do they go out to the ocean?

That puzzled me and sought answers. Below, you will see an article explaining Kawkawas history in its early fishery. Article written by "Hope Standard". Public advisor for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Nick Basok explains...

Hey man just a heads up. I took a fisheries course at UBC this year, and a head professor who’s literal job is studying salmon told us in lecture that almost all salmon that are caught and released end up dying within 2 weeks. That’s cause certain scales fall off and the mucous coating on their bodies get disturbed when we touch them. So real talk, you might have been better off just keeping that coho you caught instead of releasing it cause chances are it probably died shortly after

That's understandable, but that won't fly well with fishery officers that will take my boat, fine me, and take away my privilege to fish. Just like any fish not to be retained, I try to do my as best as I can playing by the rules and best for the fish. This video was meant to be an awareness video that there are 2 species of salmon in that lake and to highlight the difference in both.
I think there should be a study for retention for "landlocked" coho if they are truly landlocked as kokanee is also a salmon, and they are named as such for a reason.
That's like saying any salmon caught in any body of water should be kept if they happen to bite your hook. That doesn't sound right.. 😳 There's also ocean tagging I am aware of, on which they tag and release fish. Are you able toask your UBC prof. on what to do in these scenarios?

It's funny that the DFO is aware of this but forces us to release wild coho in most places/times of year. I think the rules need to be reevaluated. I'm in a FB Salmon group and this one guy caught 60 coho just to land a handful of hatchery. He said 20 were certain to die and another 20 were up in the air with their chances. I understand that a lot of these fish are heading down to the states and to my knowledge they don't clip the adipose fin. Having our hatchery fish with clipped adipose helps separate the fish. But the fact on how easy they can die from being handled even with care but we can't retain them, but fish them is kinda a joke.
Hopefully your profession head into a place where you can make a difference for the fisheries and what's best for the FISH than the fishermen.

i find in kawkawa im hitting more kokanee right off the bottom. i guess they dont school with the coho. not sure exactly but i find i catch coho higher in the water collumn and nail them left and right. when i hook into coho i drop lower and tend to hit kokanee.

Great tip! I tried deep but, low and behold, another 2 cohos 😅. I usually go deep in the hotter months and do fairly well. I'll give it a few more tries. Perhaps jig for them next time.

It's pretty good right now. Try going deeper. We had luck in the bottom 10 ft column. All pink is working right now! No scent required, just tipped with pink gulp maggots.

As of this date it's 4 kokanee per day for retention. You can not keep cohos from that lake. Scroll down to the description section. I left the regulations link and an article link, explaining a bit of Kawkawas fishery. I hope that helps, if you haven't yet, please like and subscribe. Thanks for dropping by and see you on the next episode 😊👍

How else do u recommend getting the hooks out? I've wet my hands and used a rubber coated net and got them back in the water within seconds of netting and identifying the fish.

Thx Buck, I try my best in every situation, and constructive criticism is always appreciated. If I am doing something that needs adjustment, I'll try to be better next time. Handling and catching fish takes practice, and I firmly believe that most want to do well for the fishery they enjoy. Maybe Hank has a better way he'd like to teach me 🤔.
