Btw im pretty sure your 28 vacuum achievement is broken, my pointer very clearly shows up as hitting 30 and i dont get the achievement (or do you have to keep it there for a while?)
Im getting every achievement and im having problems with the 28 vacuum
Update: i somehow got it
Is it possible to add GPU acceleration for the physics simulation? Engine simulator performed pretty poorly on my old Corei7 6700. I'm sure many people especially on Steam have newer more robust CPU's, but some of us get by with older gear and a fast GPU.
Love the projects as both a technical and mechanically minded human.
@@de_g0od dunno but for me it was sheer luck

BeamNG is based
Also interesting, beam devs are very interested in his work and maybe some day his work will be implemented in some way into the game. He has talent
@@acynder1 I'd like to see a White, but either would be an awesome addition!
Maybe have a distance travelled counter. Then make a steam achievement for going 1000km,
Youll instantly boost your player retention.
haha this, the people that want those things just want numbers going up brrrr, add some mechanic that is possible to speedrun and is already half of those small viral games that nowadays streamers play for a few days and then never again
yup, any kind of numbers going up or dumb easter egg achievements, ppl love these
Also add wheel slip on acceleration, How long would that take with and without?
Maybe like in an Idle game?
And there could be physics based achievements, like bringing water to boil at room temperature, or making the steam engine spin really fast or Sth
Holy shit, yes, please do that, if you design it like an analog odometer in old cars, I WOULD WATCH THAT SHIT FOR DAYS
How dare you call Steam Engine Simulator a dumb game!

as long as there's no bugs or microtransations, better than anything else on the market
It was just a bit of hot air.

😉 Ideas for new features:
‒ the player could control the fire and monitor its temperature
‒ different fire fuel sources, such as coal, wood, charcoal, gas, steel wool, ect.
‒ a small valve to allow to release some water droplets into the fire
‒ a small electric generator, which could be connected/disconnected to/from that driven wheel
‒ a voltmeter and a lightbulb on the electric generator
‒ a possibility to overpower the lightbulb, so, the player would be able to replace it if the lightbulb burns out
‒ a "just for fun" feature for the player to be able to connect a balloon to the "drain" pipe
Oh, I know, he should add over pressure and have explosive depressurization, leading to a game over screen.
@@jwalster9412 tbh, i didn't knew this channel before i downloaded the game, and while playing blind, i tried to explode the boiler by overpressure, so that would be a good addition
@@RaposaVermelhaKon I wouldn't be surprised if over 50% of its player base has tried that.
This game can only be called steam engine simulator when proper firebox simulation gets added. Idk how that would be added, and the game would definently have to be paid at that point, but having to plan where you add fuel, having to worry about blowbacks (if there's a blower) and having to deal with all the other quirks of steam engines would be anxiety inducing, very fun, and very tiring all at the same time.
@@jwalster9412 And if you pull a vacuum by cooling the boiler too much it should implode.
I couldn't imagine the pain and misery day one players felt pre-whistle update. So lucky I found the game afterwards.
The gameplay loop for the steam game could be something like being a steam engine operator.
You have a certain rpm and torque you have to deliver, so you must tweak the fire, the boiler, the water inlet, and the needle valve to achieve that goal.
Could have upgrades too, like greater water flow, higher power fire, less piston friction.
If you want to take this even further, could maybe get upgraded steam engines. Double acting, a steam cooler so you can recycle water. A turbine to get more efficiency out of it. A triple expansion upgrade.
that sounds a bit like "the train" on the c64: czcams.com/video/E4F5POZfRT4/video.html
That's a great idea for a gameplay loop, hope he sees it :)
maybe you can at the same time fight a mutated spider train with steam-powered guns
@@Morningstar_37melt their exoskeleton with the hot steam from the boiler, micromanaging the hottest steam before over pressuring and therefore blowing up your boiler. I'd play that
Bro at this point just play derail valley and use the steam engine lol
Like its got exactly that, but with an purpose and modelled correctly.
If you make it so when you zoom out, it goes from being a blueprint to a basic train that is moving along a track with some pretty sceanary, that would encourage players to mess around for a little longer
Yeah and if you don't blow your horn at every intersection you smash into people's cars. LUL
That would actually be an interesting idea to play around with. I hope he reads this comment.
Bump
Meh. Needs to have the ability to overpressuries the steam engine.
This
This is exactly the kind of simulation i would have loved to tinker with as a kid. I always felt “simulation games” have migrated away from their true form over the years into “management games” instead. More actual simulation tweaks my interest much more than another garbage tycoon game. Well done!
Oh my goodness, you're right and I never realised it til now. I would much prefer a sim game like this, I hate management games
İ think Ange needs to realise just how much people like his design choices
I remember wondering if you could simulate a steam engine with similar code to engine sim and then you releasing this a week later. Ange truly is the greatest around
Dude, it may be a simple idea, but the implementation and how you made it makes it a great thing, it's by no means dumb.
Don't sell yourself short, it's actually great and I used your game to teach my youngest cousin about some principles of physics.
Yeah, it sounds like a fun way to teach some principles of physics and engineering.
finally, we've come to witness the day where steam delivers on its name
Some ideas: Multiple pistons. Double acting pistons as well as single acting. Compound engines. Different valve gear like Walschaerts and Stephenson. Maybe boiler explosions?
Agreed, perhaps maybe even the ability to simulate a load?
@@loganjonesTTMS
There is that brake shoe in the current version. I would like to see more complicated loads like power generation, machine tools and pulling a train.
This, this this THIS! There is so much more than just one single piston for steam. All the way up to double-acting triple-expansion, and the end-game of course a steam _turbine!_
Sounds like a steam train 😊 Steam trains are my favorite trains 🥰🚂 The sound is my favorite part of a steam train, the classic chug of the engine along with the whistle 🙂
What a surprise that physically accurate steam whistle simulation would sound like a steam whistle on a steam train
Idea for game loop:
Static: Generate electric power (you already have alternator) for given time at varying loads without power shortage
Dynamic: Travel the longest distance at full water tank (as if steam locomotive engine)
Both: Travel by steam train trough various slopes (varying load) make sure to be fast, do NOT overspeed engine while going downhill
distance traveled = earn money
water and fuel for heater = cost money
as distance raises, the cost of fuel will increase, how far can you get?
Maybe also change heat control to something like adding a log/coal under boiler, no fine tuning
that last bit I feel deserves to be an option. some might want to simulate with fine-tuning, some with fuel. I think it's cool!
There could be speed signs appearing in tbe corner. Like % incline ahead, n kilometers to next station, sharp turn ahead, etc
Steam climb racing
Well deserved numbers.
Good to see people who can create interesting and physics based games.
Each time I log into steam I see your steam game being steamed with very positive reviews
Haha that's crazy
I thought it looked familiar when I downloaded it a few days ago, but I still might've forgotten I'd watched a video about it if this video didn't show up in my subscriptions. Quite enjoyable, I just wished I could hook up some carriages (for weight) and try to make it move (even just along a 2D track.) Wouldn't even have to be a detailed train, though it'd be neat if there were hills and valleys to really see what our controlling of the steam engine does. Got me excited for your engine simulator again.
I don't think Steam algorithm contributed much. I and possibly many others downloaded your game because of your CZcams videos.
You made a name for yourself, congrats ;D
And speaking of CZcams videos, I noticed that what you're showing now is way more sophisticated than the version I was playing, not to mention stream achievements?!? Yes please!

Ok, steam engine simulator is pretty awesome. My initial reactions, I wouldn't mind some finer grain control, and numbers being displayed. I would like to run the steam engine continously. So balancing the heat, water coming in, and steam going out. Also if you want people to play it longer you can make things adjustable like the wheel size, boiler size, etc. If you add a game loop of meeting some goal (like powering an electic grid), you could get new parts. Edit: After playing for a bit, the idea of multiple levels and a generator isn't bad. So it would be the difference between no load and a load so it would behave different. For each level you would have to keep the RPM in a certain range. You can then upgrade your parts after each level.
Choo Choo! Absolutely love what you're doing, can't wait for 3D engine simulator and all the crazy designs people will come up with it.
You should add a distance counter and a water and heat/btu counter, add achievements for going 10km or something, and also let us pick a safety blow off pressure, like high, medium, or low.
Being able to change aspects of the machine, like boiler size, heat, flywheel etc combined with a test track might have helped retention. Having the player been given a constantly powered heat source with a set amount of fuel for the engine and a track with curves, inclines/declines would give the player a reason to change the engine aspects on the fly and see how far they can get. Maybe that could have increased retention, but would probably go in a very different direction, than just a simulation.
The whistle was obviously the must have feature! Good that you've added it!
i love that its so procedural. As an amateur game dev, this is truely inspiring.
How you can simulate the resonance of the whistle blew me away.
Thank you for sharing this stuff with us Ange !
Ange, I have been an avid CZcams user since it released and your channel has immediately become my all time favorite. Please keep making videos, the quality and execution are on a truly new level. thank you :D
I stumbled across your channel while ago and I love to see that informative and inspiring channel grow!
I was browsing through steam and then found out about this app. To note I was already your channel subscriber and enjoy your engine simulator. I had no idea this steam engine simulator was developed by you until this video lol.
I haven't heard of Runka-Chunk in years, that's awesome that she supported you on this project and on Patreon! She's a real hoot and I'm happy she's just as excited about your work as I am, moreso that she's able to financially support you. I'm really happy to see your work progress so smoothly, keep going!
Imagine your engine simulators as developer's tools for modders or studios.
Imagine if you can design your own engine in Engine Simulator, then export that file into beamng, asseto corsa or iracing.
Or look at what the cyberpunk developers had to do to implement realistic noises, they had to record dozens of cars and motorcycles to implement the noises into the game, if they had a tool like this, they could just simulate it.
Inspired by your "preparing for success" you should consider releasing a dev tool version of the game compatible with idk the most popular game engine, I think that's Unity, but don't take my word for it.
I want to create engines and test them to the limit haha
Congrats man, this is seriously cool! I'm just getting into computer programming, you make this sound like no bid deal but this is seriously impressive! Wish you the best!
AWesome project! And I CANT even wait to see the 3d engine simulator! You are a HERO

I remember the mentioned engine simulator, it was interesting and decent, good job on that.
actually because of your game, which popped up on my front page of steam, it reminded me of the game series Crazy Machines i used to play so much as a kid. last i checked it wasnt available on steam but then i checked again bc of your game and there it was. so thanks to you i am reunited with my favorite game as a kid back then! ❤
I think adding information about boiling temperature and pressure in-game would be a nice addition. Maybe even have that graph that updates depending on pressure. I also think you should have the wheel spinning backwards as an achievement
The way I see it, your game should be classified as a learning tool. If you want to extend play time, you should incorporate either a narration or some kind of written information in your game explaining details about the engine, how it works, why it works, etc.. I know next to nothing about steam engines, myself. But, just from watching this video, I learned about how pressure affects the boiling point of water. That's new information to me. And I think it would do well to put that kind of information in your game.
Great work! The components I'm most interested in are turning movement into sound and the fluid Sim implementation details
This is actually so detailed! Wow! Well done!
Would like to see a steam locomotive see through model so people can see what actually happens inside it and see how steam drives those massive wheels
I don't know what this is but it made me smile. I'm glad there are people out there making things like this exist, thank you!
As an hvac tech I thought your explanation of the boiler was super interesting and well thought out
It might take a few weeks to get everything, but you would have a full fledged game with a unique charm on your hands, with hours of playtime.
1. Create a map of a (fictional) country, with dozens of interconnected train stations across it. Enough to be a schematic with mountains and seas, tracks and stations drawn.
2. Each track would have some slopes, turns and so on.
3. Variable haul and railway state, adding an additional variable.
4. Campaign: deliver x tons of cargo from Y to Z station. Difficulty: how much cargo you take. Youd start on in a flat, rich section of the map, with high quallity rail tracks and frequent stops to get used to the controls, but would get more and more difficult.
5. Missions: get random missions and random amount of cargo. Deliver it across the entire map, possibly leaving a part of it at different stations and having to plan the route yourself (like risking going through a difficult section, or going on a longer path,...). And if you give up on the section, you can restore to any of the stops you took sonce the start of the journey.
6. Free roam: travel freely through the map
7. A different view, where you are the person controlling the train and only see the gauges and hear the engine.
8. Watch the train in a sideview, so you can see the incline.
9. Upgrades, achievements
Congrats Ange! I think Steam Engine Simulator needs things to hook your steam engine up to. A dyno to see how much horsepower you're putting out. A generator to see how much electrical power you're producing. Stuff like that. I also like the distance counter idea.
Maybe adding different steam engines, like the Walschaerts valve gear (my favorite), or the first steam engine, could be interesting.
Edit: I realised that the previous suggestion may defeat the purpose of the "game", which is probably to simulate only one specific engine.
Here are other suggestions, though:
1 - Make the controls more intuitive, like changing the "spin wheel manually" to be left and right arrows instead of spacebar.
2 - Make a leaderboard for the fastest speeds ever. I suggest to make two: one for normal mode and one for the hell mode.
Thank you for this Steam Engine Simulator Playthrough! Exactly what i was looking for :)
Really cool! Reminds me of the audio simulation they're doing in the upcoming train sim Century of Steam.
I think you should add different valve gears and different cylinder/valve arrangements.
For instance, true piston valves, and slide valves, instead of the strange valve that you had in your model. As for valve gear, there are many wonderful diagrams of different types, from stephenson to walschearts, baker, and gab (along with dozens of others)
You could also have sliders that adjust the cylinder's size (the power piston would in this scenario be double-acting) so you could generate more force at the cost of needing more steam or less force but having less steam needs.
(a locomotive boiler diagram would also be interesting. plus, with the fluid model, I assume you would be able to actually simulate a draught through the tubes and firebox to help make the fire hotter)
All of this is just to appease some steam locomotive nerds, though, haha
You are turning our dreams into reality. All the power to you!
Hey Ange, it's so amazing it blows my mind! It's really interesting what various machines enthusiast, gamers or just people consider a "game" :D
Everything you post is so fricken exciting
I just finished getting all the achievements in your game this morning!
Took about 40 hours total, most of it spent boiling water.
And then you release an update!
Flashback to my old physics teacher showing us how to boil water at 27°c by lowering the pressure in a tank. P.S. please let users edit the fuel mapping and ignition timing in the full engine simulator. It would be an incredibly useful tool for people who want to learn engine tuning
I found your channel via the game on Steam, subscribed since I like your content.
I wish more game developers were like you. I'd love to see more behind the scenes thinking of developers on fixing bugs and what they really wanted to accomplish when they were making their games. Nice job.

I found this channel through Steam Engine Simulator and I agree it was a good call to release on Steam.

Ngl I’ve been playing this for days without even knowing who you are. Thank you for this. It’s helped ease my stress levels by a shit ton these last couple days. Definitely subbing to you for more content
I really appreciate the time and effort you gave for this simple simulator. It is fun and i suggest make it more difficult by blowing up something like pressure gauges or the engine itself if you can't control the pressure. That way it is like game over.
Oh my god I'm here for it. "Dumb" game my butt. You deserve all the attention.
Does the temperature gauge only measure the water temperature or will it measure the vapour temp when the water runs out? I noticed it sitting maxed out at 300° at 11:27 without water
It actually measures both, depending on the current water level. For all intents and purposes though, when there is water in the tank, it's measuring water temperature
@@AngeTheGreat very cool, thanks
you are such a good simulator developer, keep going! love your videos!!!
More complex steam injectors would be really cool too! They're used to pump water into the boiler. They made running steam engines very tricky. Well done!
This is the most amazing game I have ever played, I have played it for 10 days straight now, I have not taken a single break.
The obvious place to take it would be to have it become something like polybridge, but instead of building the bridge, you build your vehicle.
Would be a great tool to teach people a lot of engineering fundamentals and to see what creative people in the community are able to build.
Came across it by accident as I'm into train simulation and steam locomotives are my favorites, also do live steam in real life.
It's a pretty faithful experience to running a model steam engine such as my Jensen 75, and just as addicting, have to admit I've spent several hours seeing how fast and slow I can get it to run, and the whistle is greatly appreciated.
Only thing I could think of in terms of improvements would be to add in a reverse linkage on the valve gear, maybe an eccentric to slip the rocker arm to change the timing to get clockwise rotation.
Another form of load such as a generator with a lightbulb and ammeter or some simple belt driven tools could provide some incentive to run the engine.
On my real Jensen stationary engine, I have it connected to a workshop with a circular saw, drill press, and grinding wheel. Demonstrates how the big engines used to drive factories and such, and of course fun to use to work on little pieces of wood and paper with.
So, my idea:
You're in a steam-powered vehicle of sorts (maybe a car or a monorail) going through a very extreme track (maybe in the Alps) with a lot of slopes. Your task is to reach the end. The problem is that you can go backwards, if your torque isn't enough. Your tools are the original engine + a transmission. Maybe the engine breaks if it surpasses set rpm while going down, or maybe you have a limited supply of both water and coal, and you can resupply only at certain points on the track.
Or another idea, leave it be and put effort into a sequel or the engine sim.
If you're hunting for something to encourage retention for the steam engine simulator, consider showing these engines working in their real life applications. The current boiler could be hooked up to an old timey power station, with a slightly chaotic electrical load downstream that a player can try to sustain a constant voltage for. The grid could even have its own other power supplies that can in turn affect the simulated steam engine, so a player can see a glimpse of the complex dance that those power stations are doing with eachother to keep the lights on.
Another route that will likely make a small subset of extreme nerds very happy: Model a steam locomotive. Throw in a 2D representation of some hills, carriages, and stations, and people will sit there for hours.
Have you tried other free to play games?
You are missing some "features".
Why are there no skins to buy?
Why can't I buy a bigger version?
For real thought, it would be cool if you could use the energy for something (train, saw mill, etc.) But i get it, it is a simulation not a game, and I had a lot of fun with it. I would have liked a number showing how much throttle and brake I am applying. But honestly it is as good or better than most free to play games I have played in a long time. Reminded me of the old flash games days, where people made stiff, because it is fun to make stuff, and no other reason.
Ooh that would be super fun, what if the engine is hooked up to stuff that gets progressively larger and you get the ability to upgrade the engine? Like it starts out as a tiny desktop engine powering a science fair project but you earn some kind of currency that lets you upgrade engine specs / parts as you progress to powering larger things. Kinda like an idle game but there could be some strategic elements to progressing faster. Maybe some breakdown conditions that you need to handle to prevent a breakdown (oil levels?)
@@StephenSmith304 yes and you could add steel properties to the components and calculate stress ranges and cycles and add the fatigue calculations. Then having them fail if you puss them too hard.
And 4 years of work later you would actually have a game on your hand ala railroad tycoon 2 or similar. But still a simulation. The sounds of braking metal when the engine explodes, would be amazing.🤣
+1 really nice game!
I've got the training for boilerman myself and this is a brilliant addition to it :)
Would of been cool if you set it up to make a train move as the steam engine works, sort of like a steam train simulator, where you have to regulate your usage of the steam engine in order to get from point A to point B or something.
But still, really cool and well developed! I think its pretty cool at how you can see and learn how a steam engine works.
Its not a dumb steam game, it's a masterpiece.
Ey! I got my review in the video! What a nice personal accomplishment.
You should make your racecar track game a train game where the user controls this motor to run the train on a track.
Great content, I enjoy all your videos and learning from them. Thanks for what you do.
Dumb? Genius u mean
I would love speedrunners to pick up on thos game and start setting challenges like most efficient engine, highest rpm, highest torque, quickest to X speed, etc. I have no idea how to achieve that but it would be cool. Massive amounts of respect for you man.
I loved it when you added the whistle!!!!! ❤
I was just messing around with this last night. The Steam algorithm suggested your game and now the CZcams algorithm suggested your video. Glory to our robot overlords!
The colors and topic of your game remind me of Wedgwood's Jasperware. "The Lunar Men" is an interesting tale about how interconnected early industrial advancements were with basic science of the time- including the fact that many of the big names of each, including Wedgwood, Erasmus Darwin, etc, were all friends with eachother!
I want a full valve design for Engine sim where you can add or take away cams or valves and also keep working on the 3d view of the engine! Thats all i have to say and you did well with this vid!
Its not dumb its actually quite fun! I suggest make a more in-depth 3D version of the game where more maintenance is required to keep your model engine running smoothly and maybe a currency system implemented so you can buy upgrades/repair/replace parts for it.
Just downloaded and played a bit - it's awesome! Thank you for creating this and making it available for free.
im so glad i found this. downloaded immediately. have you thought of adding more cylinders? like maybe making a triple-expansion steam engine?
When I first saw this game coming out, I imagined it would have multiple engine design, different in some ways, so you can experiment with it. Maybe light puzzle elements like setting up the conditions for the engine to run would be a good addition?
Wow, awesome game. I love the UI !
I was browsing free to play, saw the simulator and was like "That looks awesome" and then was subsequently mesmerised for at least an hour playing with it. Then today I discovered your channel and your engine simulator and now I think ur my favourite youtuber lol
I just randomly found it and for some reason I just can't get enough of it and now I am completely obsessed with steam engines.
following the water boiling topic:
This is the reason your car can be cooled with water. It is a closed pressurised loop, at approximately 1.5 to 2 atmospheres(depending on the car). Your car has either one or multiple pressure release valves that only release pressure over those 1.5 to 2 atmospheres, hence why it needs to be topped up with water or coolant once in a while. If you car overheated at regular atmospheric pressure, it would just blow the gasket with the steam, but since it is under pressure, the water can temporarily reach over 100 degrees. If you do see your can overheating, you probably have enough time to drive to the nearest stop. And if you do stop, DO NOT shut off the engine. Rev it so the water pump can spin faster and circulate the coolant loop faster. Once it goes down to the regular working temperature, then shut off your car
Wow you updated it nice!
What might be fun is to add a screen of a train going forward depending on how fast you get the engine, you could also make the background be procedurally generated with procedural biomes to
