Amazing. Just stunning. But why move the headstones and leave the bodies? That is just not right. Leave the cemeteries alone. The people who are buried there need their headstones with their bodies. It's not right.

Sadly in years to come they'll probably turn the park into housing estates or other buildings so the poor bodies below will be even more forgotten it's so sad to think after living your life then being laid to rest eventually there'll be no trace you ever walked the earth😢

Folks can relax and have a picnic on graves like they did in the old days. I loved that very ornate old one GV, any idea of a date? And the 1685 stone for George was amazing. The tree on the tombstone is a Yew Tree. Also known as the Tree of Death. This tree goes back 2000 years to the time of Christ. It is popular in old graveyards. If a graveyard didn’t have a Chapel, they would hold services under a Yew Tree. They were deliberately planted near churches and graveyards in the early 1600’s in Scotland, Ireland and England. It is considered a sacred tree.

I know youre in Ireland but if you ever visit Bradford, West Yorkshire, England you should try visit Undercliffe Cemetery. Its a huge Victorian Cemetery with around 23,000 graves and the resting place of over 124,000 people. I used to spend a lot of time there as a teen just reading the gravestones. There are some beautiful monumemts and a lot of mausoleums. Well worth a visit. Thank you, and Sue for all the work you do. 😊

I would guess Cathal, you are on the Shankill Road in the west of Belfast if that is called the Shankill Cemetery. I know of the gentleman who you have spoken of. He was referred to me by another CZcamsr from County Down. He is very knowledgeable. I was never allowed to see much of this part of Belfast back in 1981 because of the troubles. A very nice cemetery going the way of a lot of English cemeteries where they move the headstones to the outer perimeter walls and open up the green space for people to enjoy and picnic. Not sure how I feel about that. But beautiful headstones nonetheless. Some of those headstones are impressive, especially the ancient carvings displayed on them. I love the ages too. Did any of the specially carved stones have the stone masons name or identification on them? Just wondering ... I am getting pictures and information to send you regarding my grandparents and great-grandparents. Thank you so much! ♥️🙏☘️

The cemetery looks like a beautiful parkland but it was done at the expense of moving the headstones from the sites where they were with the bodies. That is so wrong. The families who are still alive should protest. That is the only statue of Queen Victoria that I have seen that has her looking beautiful. The other statues have her seated and looking plump with a plain face.

and the skull of a giant Irish deer was discovered when the wall was being repaired in 1839.

Great vid, GV!! Question: In the US, a burial is, by law nd custom for "perpetuity" . What are the rules in Ireland??? (Having lived in Germany in the 1990s, I know that one essentially "rents" the grave for a period of about 30 years; afterward the lease can be renewed by the family for another 30-year period, and so on. If this renewal does not happen, the gravestone can be removed and the plot can be used for a new burial.)

Like the way the grave stones are in the walls. Suspect the people are buried right in front of them?

    Shankill Rd Graveyard
In the heart of Belfast, where echoes blend,
Lies Shankill Road, where time does wend,
    An ancient graveyard, tales untold,
    From 1306, its roots unfold.
The White Church of Chapels of the Ford,
Once stood proud, its hymns adored,
Now a park, where silence speaks,
A place of peace, where memory peaks.
Queen Victoria stands in lace array,
Her statue graces the light of day,
In gentle repose, she watches o'er,
A haven where the lost restore.
Birds sing sweet in the morning light,
    Their melodies a soft delight,
Amidst the stones, where stories sleep,
Their songs of solace gently seep.
Whispers of the past in every breeze,
Caress the leaves of ancient trees,
A tranquil realm where spirits find,
A resting place, both calm and kind.
In this sacred space, let peace abide,
    Where history and nature coincide,
A testament to the days gone by,
    Underneath Belfast's broad, blue sky.
May the songs of birds forever ring,
In Shankill Road, where memories cling,
A symphony of love and grace,
    In this eternal resting place.

The tree almost looked like a willow tree.

I agree with that head stone on the wall should be in a museum to keep it safe it's very stunning and beautiful
