Thank you for this video! I almost spent hundreds of dollars on unnecessary parts. Was told by my dealership that it was almost certainly the ABS sensors and recommended replacing all 4 sensors. Come to find out the rubber pad behind the brake petal wore out. I ripped off a tip to a nerf dart and used it as a replacement. Works like a charm. Nothing like free fixes. Thanks again!
Just came here to say THANK YOU! I replaced the fuses while I was replacing the pigtail harness for the taillights bc they literally melted stuck to the bulb! Easily saved me a couple hundred dollars
Thanks for the straightforward easy to follow video. This saved me hundreds. My traction Control light was illuminated along with the brake lights, that ran the battery down. My reinstall sequence was: disconnect battery, remove retaining clip, remove brake light switch, disconnect switch from wiring harness, install rubber grommet, partially reinstall retaining clip, reinstall switch, push in clip, reconnect wire to switch.
Hi I had the same this morning the ESC light went on and lost acceleration my question is if that brake switch is the problem and needs to be replaced for a new one. Thanks
Hey there! Thank you very much for this quick and easy video. I cant emphasize how much this video helped me compared to what else I've found on the internet. You're a life saver lol
Thank you for this educational video!! It helped me an old lady get it done!! Now my car is working great again. Traction light off, no more loss of power and my brake lights go on when I push brake pedal instead of staying on draining my battery!!!
I have a 2005 Hyundai Sonata V-6. This problem just started a couple of days ago. This You Tube video looks like solid information, so I'll try it out when I attempt to make the repair. Hope it works. Thanks.
I can't believe you explained all this in less than 5 minutes. I knew about the switch had that issue on an old Ford escort...I was looking for fuse location and you got me there...about to check them now...brake lights are out.
Your video was super helpful and so helpful. Tomorrow I'm going to check all of the fuses and check on that brake switch thing if the fuses are good. Best video yet and so simple and short.
Well that reassured me a lot. I was able to figure out the issue I was having was probably the sensor, and a piece of foam tape acting as a spacer seemed to fix it, but knowing there's supposed to be a bumper there confirms it.
Thank you SO much!!!! My neighbor told me my taillights were on. After I went and inspected I found out it was my break lights. After scouring the internet, I found your video and it was short, simple and to the point. I was actually able to see what you were doing too! I took out the same fuse you showed so I would burn through my battery. After I got the part (rubber pad stopper, less than $5) I changed it myself. My break lights are no longer stuck on! Thank you on so many levels!!
VERY HELPFUL! thank you! Car was auto slowing on the freeway, and noticed the brake lights staying on the next day. Also the traction light came on the dash... Found out there was a recall on the rubber bumper piece, which wore a hole into it.. Popped in a new one which apparently is now made of denser rubber. Worked like a charm! Also put in a new brake light switch while I was down there since my other one was sticking a bit...
Hi Ian. My 2013 sonata is randomly losing power won’t go past 2 rpm’s. The only issue I see is the traction light came on and having issues with the brake lights being out and replaced but now only passenger brake light is working. Do you think I’m having the same issue as you?
@@MrVibeCheck41 I'm not sure. My brake lights were staying ON. Like the car was off and locked and the Brake lights looked lime someone is pushing the brake pedal. Try replacing the rubber bumper. It was under recall. You might get the dealership to do it for free! It solved my issues immediately!
Hello Ian! When you say “auto slowing”, did it feel like the gas pedal just stopped responding, as if there was no response when pressing on the gas pedal? I believe I am having a similar problem on my SX.
This worked for me. Thank you. My brake lights were always on and I was having hesitation when driving. The car would just slow down as if I were braking. It fixed both problems. I changed the fuses mentioned and the brake light sensor. Turns out I also needed the brake pedal pad (found that at Hyundai dealer for $6). Total cost was $30. Just make sure you know if you have the two prong or four prong sensor.
Could you please tell me what’s going on? So I have changed the sensor and added something to the break pedal and I’m sure it’s pushing the sensor all the way in, but when I start going forward 60 percent of time brake light comes on then I have to play around with the brake pedal until it goes off.
Thanks for pointing out the brake pedal pad. I found a broken part of the pad on the floorboard of my wife's Elantra. I can't believe how cheaply made this part is.
Very well done.... sometimes my gas Boggs down and I’m thinking it’s because the cruise control / traction control tell the computer to stop gas flo ???

So i got a new switch but i cannot get the clip out of it. The one in the car came out just fine but for some reason the clip on the new one will not come out. I feel like I'm going to break it if I apply any more force.
Thank you. If I have problems getting my car out of park without using the release button, is it due to a bad brake light switch? I have a 2011 sonata.
What would cause the brake lights to stay on when I actually have the lights on, replace the brake switch replaced the fuses but the brake lights stay on when the lights are on??
I do have a question! The little rubber that touches the brake light switch fell off! And now my brake lights are working properly! Do I need to replace the little rubber even if my lights are fine? What is the purpose of the rubber?
My brake lights will come on randomly, while driving or when car is off overnight, when they come on while driving it will cut power to the engine. I have to use my foot and pull the brake pedal out (twords me) until i see in the mirror that the lights are off. Then i can continue driving. Would you say its the switch that is my problem?

Thank you, great video and after crawling under the dash I am not sure how you did such a good job. Anyway my rubber insert has a hole in it causing the break lights to NEVER go off. A new switch will not correct that issue correct?
I have a question: I have a 2017 Sonata Sport and the brake lights are working but always go off almost immediately after I replace the brake light switch. On the other hand, The plunger on the brake light switch becomes very loose and defective. How do I sort out this problem permanently? How do I make sure that the brake light switch stays on and does not go defective after a day or two with my brake lights working normally?? Help!
Does this also help if the car isn’t starting at all? I had my engine replaced for the recall. Now every now and again the car doesn’t start on cold mornings. Can someone help please!
Nice video. I don’t know how you did all that one handed. My stopper is good and My 3 fuses are good(checked with a meter), and i replaced the brake light switch but i still have an odd situation where the brake lights come on normally when the headlights are OFF. BUT, when the headlights are on, then the brake lights are always ON and never turn off. The only thing i didn’t check was the relay that u mention that is in the dash. Any suggestions? Thanks. 2014 sonata gls

Mine is not working most of the time but does come on occasionally. i bought a replacement assembly but because it does work sometimes im thinking there might be something else going on. is there anything else you think it might be before i take my car apart to replace the lamp assembly?
I'm just now having this same issue on my 2014 Hyundai Sonata Ltd 2.0T. I went to get my inspection done and it failed cuz the 3rd light didn't come on. Come to find out it comes on after I've pushed the brake pedal all the way in a couple of times while I'm driving, but not in the morning. Weird! 3 years later, and this video is still helping people. I can’t tell you the horror I felt when searching for answers about why my brake lights wouldn’t come on, and seeing some results with $2,500+ repair estimates. I was happy enough when I got the new brake light switch for $7, but had I not watched your video, and hadn’t been told about that little rubber grommet, it wouldn’t have fixed the issue, and I’d have kept right on going down the list of fixes. Turns out, the switch isn’t even what needed replacing. When I go to return it, I’m not sure what to call the piece that’s missing though…So maybe I’ll just improvise something 🤔
Replaced the fuses and replace the stoplight switch and the lights still aren't working, and the bulbs themselves don't look blown and it seems like it'd be silly for both of them to go out the same afternoon. Guess I'll have to take it into the shop and pay an absurd amount of money for something that probably is an easy fix once the problem is diagnosed
I am facing an issue with brake lights ,one of them is not working I mean brake light , when I pushes the brake pedal one of light is not working but it's working when i put park lights or headlights , I changed the bulbs and issue is still there
I have the same issue, I heard it could be a ground wire, but I don't even know where to begin with that? If you figured it out, please share. Thank you

Help. I have a 2013 Sonata with two brake lights that don't work, but the third light in the middle works. I've ruled out the brake light switch because of this, and also new bulbs or replacing fuses didn't work. Also, turn signal lights are separate from my brake lights and they work. Can anyone guide me to what I'm looking for so I can fix the problem? Thanks.
@KnicholasFlanigan turns out they were the "tail light wire harnesses." I got two replacement harnesses for 12-15 bucks each. They're easy to install, should only take like 5-10 minutes if you know how to unscrew a nut lol. Not sure if that's exactly going on with your car but for the price I'd say it's definitely worth a shot. You could always return them if they don't work. Good luck!
My break lights work fine however when I turn on the light switch to drive at night they won’t stay on…. (Headlights work fine)…. When I break it still works but why won’t it stay on?? I’m confused… 😵💫 what do I do??????

You are correct. I went today and the first available appointment is 2 weeks out. I can buy the part from them and put it on myself today or wait and have it done for free, but have vacay this weekend so unfortunately had to pay for it

I'm having issues with one tail light I changed the bulb still nothing
Did you figure out what it was my friend?
I am facing an issue with brake lights ,one of them is not working I mean brake light , when I pushes the brake pedal one of light is not working but it's working when i put park lights or headlights , I changed the bulbs and issue is still there
I have the same issue, I heard it could be a ground wire, but I don't even know where to begin with that? If you figured it out, please share.
Thank you
Is that small pad supposed to have a whole in it or is supposed to be solid?
solid
Please help. My drl front headlight on the right side stopped working on my sonata but the headlight works. The right side brake light works but the regular right side taillight is out. They both flicker on and off when I press the lock and unlock on my car....I’m fucking lost!!!!
Thanks.
having this same issue, did you get yours fixed? if so what was the problem?
@KnicholasFlanigan turns out they were the "tail light wire harnesses." I got two replacement harnesses for 12-15 bucks each. They're easy to install, should only take like 5-10 minutes if you know how to unscrew a nut lol. Not sure if that's exactly going on with your car but for the price I'd say it's definitely worth a shot. You could always return them if they don't work. Good luck!
@@xcalicojackthanks!
@@KnicholasFlanigan no problem. I forgot to mention that I got the harnesses on amazon if that helps. Hope it works for you!
My break lights work fine however when I turn on the light switch to drive at night they won’t stay on…. (Headlights work fine)…. When I break it still works but why won’t it stay on?? I’m confused… 😵💫 what do I do??????
Same here...Any solution
This brake pad is under extended warranty...15years unlimited mileage...it's free...you don't have to do it yourself. I just called my Hyundai dealership and that's what they told me. I have an appointment on Wednesday to have the pad replaced for free. My 2014 Sonata has 117,000 miles on it. Just thought I let everyone know.
How do you know? I have 2011 elantra, 125k. Is it still covered?
You are correct. I went today and the first available appointment is 2 weeks out. I can buy the part from them and put it on myself today or wait and have it done for free, but have vacay this weekend so unfortunately had to pay for it
My dealership as well as Hyundai factory customer service charge me $228 for that stopper and said it was not under warranty the best replace meant I saw is a plastic card body piece I'll never buy another Hyundai
Wow that is insane.. over $200 to replace an easily accessible tiny plastic part? I bet they charge $100 for new wiper blade 🤣
What is the exact year make and model of your vin?
Rotate 90 degrees.
I was worried this would be difficult. NOT Thank you
I have an issue I am hoping to find and fix myself if anyone can help me please let me know thanks..... I have a 2016 hyundai sonata sport and out of nowhere my 4 outside brake lights do not work when I hit the pedal the taillights are working and the middle brake light in the rear window is working when I hit the pedal but the 2 on the trunk lid and 2 on the rear fenders do not brighten they only stay at running light brightness I'm leaning toward the brake lamp switch but confused as to why the center light still works and the others don't please if you know what this issue is let me know thank you
