    I love those Japanese pattern pictures! I would love to see your pattern book collection some time - seeing all the different things you make really inspires me to knit outside the comfort zone. I think I'll be daydreaming about your gray cabled cardi/vest for a WHILE, gosh those criss cross cables are mesmerizing, and agree I think it would suit you so well as a vest. Thanks for sharing!

    Wow, I love those charts. I already would rather work from a chart than a line by line written pattern 90% of the time, so the clarity and conciseness with which they are laid out is pretty darn sexy.

    It's always such a pleasure to listen to you! I find the way you word things to be so thoughtful, and I really appreciate that, for example, you use gender-neutral language when describing sizing a sweater (i.e., 'someone with a 31-inch bust'). Also, the way you describe Japanese knitting patterns and how the language works (and how mistranslations are possible due to Google not being quite caught up with these nuances) was very enlightening! I hope this makes sense, but I appreciate that you don't exotify or make generalizations. Good luck with the Japanese class - looking forward to your video on Japanese knitting patterns sometime :)

    So much inspiration here! Your lacy top makes your knitting skills shine. I get annoyed when pattern books and magazines use hazy filters and dark or obscure photos. We get that you are creating a feeling, but we are knitters and it is a huge commitment of time and money to take on a project. We just want to know what to expect! Appreciate your sharing some basics about reading Japanese patterns and look forward to a deeper dive in the new year. I feel like the designs have a 1990s vibe. I remember a French magazine which I think I still have that had all these cool details like cutouts and puffy features. Happy holidays!

    Loved this video, it clearly shows that one can adjust patterns to make them more fitting to oneself plus I like the iterative process you went through, it's rather inspiring. I would really appreciate an episode on Japanese patterns, as I've started to look at amirisu magazine, which is a slightly different style to what you can get in Europe. However saying that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the book you're referencing and will be looking out for the video and the book too :)

    I have some Japanese sewing books, and sewed from some for children when my girls were little. I’ve also used translation apps to translate Russian sewing patterns. The funniest translation is that the word for “wrap” in Russian somehow comes out as “smell” in English. So you get “Knit Dress with Smell” or “Cotton Skirt with Scent” for a wrap dress/skirt. 😂

    • @melmakesstuff
      @melmakesstuff  Před rokem

      Haha! That’s amazing. I have two Japanese sewing books but haven’t been brave enough to jump into those yet. So interesting! Recently, in my musings about how to modify garments so they fit, I thought about making myself a "recipe" with measurements on a drawing, like a schematic but more detailed, and knitting from pictures instead of words. The Japanese patterns seem to use this approach. Look forward hearing more about your adventures!

    I fell in love with Japanese stitch patterns about five years ago and started a Facebook group “For the Love of Japanese Knitting “. I’m no expert at all, I just love the patterns and wanted a group to share my passion. It’s grown to almost 14k members, so if you are so inclined, I’d love to have you as part of the group. We could use a few more people who are actually knitting with the designs and not just looking😅. So far I’ve only knit from one actual Japanese book, it’s still a UFO, but mostly I incorporate the stitch patterns into my projects.

    So happy to see another podcast. I've been binging and re-binging your content. Love it.
    I have a degree in Japanese studies and lived in Japan in the past, but only dealt with japanese sewing books. The problem is that while the patterns/clothes look great in the oversized styling on japanese tiny/flat figures inside the books, none of it is flattering on a standard western (hourglas) figure... So the end result is always disappointing (potato sack). I learned to admire those clothes (knitted or sewn) from afar :)

    • @melmakesstuff
      @melmakesstuff  Před rokem +1

      Thank you 🥰. I’m a huge fan of the potato sack look though, I have to say 😂. As someone who grew up during the 90s supermodel era I do know what you’re talking about with the pressure to have a certain silhouette, but maybe I’m just beyond the point of caring.

    That's so interesting about the different approach in Japanese knitting books! I have a trip to Japan upcoming and I'll definitely seek some out - love the focus on more visuals. The sizing approach looks like what I've seen in more vintage English patterns, with the assumption that if you're a proficient knitter, you can work out numbers suitable for you from the sample. Do you know in which year your book was published. I'd be really curious if there are some books appearing in recent years showing more of a range of sizes in the pattern.

    • @melmakesstuff
      @melmakesstuff  Před rokem

      This book was published in 2020; I’m working from another one published 9/2022 with the same sizing (only one smallish size provided), so I don’t believe it has to do with the patterns being old.
