- Feasts - Mexico 2 of 3 - BBC Culture Documentary , recorded 17.09.2011
Series in which food writer and presenter Stefan Gates immerses himself in some of the most extraordinary feasts and festivals on earth. By joining ordinary people in these strange and wonderful distillations of their culture and beliefs, he hopes to gain a revelatory insight into how the world thinks and feels.
Stefan goes on a wild emotional and spiritual rollercoaster ride, starting with a teenage girl's bizarre coming-of-age ceremony and ending with the Day of the Dead, a cacophonous cross-cultural festival of the senses during which Mexicans truly believe that their loved ones come back from the dead for three days every year to spend the day with them.
In Oaxaca, he is dressed up as a dead woman and made to dance like a lunatic at the head of a procession as it makes its way through town. He is turned into an emotional wreck at the moment the dead return, bursting into tears as Dias de los Muertos makes him experience grief and loss for the first time.
But then in the next breath, the family Stefan is living with teach him to celebrate and laugh at death. They turn his views on their head, allowing him to embrace and conquer his fear of death through an extraordinary sensual onslaught of food, flowers, songs and smells. The sight of the graveyards overflowing with flowers and mescal-drinking revellers is a truly life-changing experience.

This episode has showed me how cool Mexican culture really is. The people seem so warm and lovely. Hope one day I'll get to visit Mexico and sample some of their amazing cuisine.
Yes! Come to Mexico! We will welcome you with open arms.
+kztar621 I do Mexicans keep it real!
Yeah, Mexico has problems like every other country, some more so than others, but they have a beautiful culture that knows how to make the best out of sometimes bad situations. You have to admire that.
I'm so proud of our traditions and holidays!LOVE Mexico😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

When my mom passed away I did my first alter and I felt more peace then when I was in my own tradition. It was like I got that extra time with my mom that I believed was taken from me. Now even though I have no Mexican heritage I replace Halloween with Los Dia De La Muerte. The children in my neighborhood love it. The children of Hispanic heritage have hugged me for having this. I made a lot of new friends. ❤😊
We already have our plane tickets to spend 2 weeks in Oaxaca that includes Day of the Dead. I sincerely think that I have never looked forward to an event as much as I am this one! This will be a trip of a lifetime.
Sandra Costa how was it? my mother and i are planning to take a trip down towards the end of October. it's going to be my first time celebrating this with my family down there, so some perspective from a former newbie would be nice.
TheLastHylianTitan It was SO magical that we have already booked our room for three months next time! We are even taking friends along. After you've been there for Dias de los Muertos it would seem a travesty to go at any other time. Weather was perfect. Cheap eats. We will be there from the last week of October 2016 to the last week in January 2017. There are so much going on during that time.
Sandra Costa yeah, i still remember the craziness at Christmastime. and i was just staying at a small ranch, then! have fun.
Catalina looked like she was hit by a brick when she found out he has a wife LMAOOOO
Laughing my ass off off off off?
no, I never had that expression, with the man. He was very kind, it was an incredible experience.
in mexico we very are proud of our native heritage
I've always wanted to visit Oaxaca. Now even more! Just beautiful!
my whole family is from Oaxaca😁
18:17 So I am watching this because of Spanish class. Next thing you know I hear Gustavo Santaolalla's guitar at this part.
For those very few people wondering, he composed the music for The Last of Us and the song playing is Tema Amores Perros + Atacama
Mexico has a such a different ways to celebrate Dia de Muertos. The Aztecas not are the only one, Toltecas, Chichimecas, Zapotecas every one it's a diferent culture and everyone had their own way to celebrating. Every state on Mexico it's like a nation with their own way but the same culture.
AMEN BROTHA !
+Oscar Eduardo Martinez Lopez
Exactly.
Oscar Eduardo Martinez Lopez exactly great point.
Oscar Eduardo Martinez Lopez stop👿
I love & respect this culture it's similar to south indian Tamil culture.
.... Yeah but like one or two nudges less extreme, I'm not criticizein or insulting I'm just saying the Tamil have us beet fair and square.
Oaxaca isn't Aztec, it's Zapotec. I would have thought that the BBC would have done a bit of research before making a documentary on Mexico.
who elses teacher is making them watch this
Me rn
Even of you are from a different culture, you have to admit that La Dia de Los Muertos is a pretty fucking cool holiday for what it symbolizes.
My mom, Tia's and grandma all cook molé. I'll tell you this much: that its definitely an acquired taste like wine, but then you start to taste everything that is in it. It's a Smorgasbord of flavors in your mouth. I hated it as a child/teen but i love it now. My favorite is covering chicken on it and making burritos with sopa de arroz (spanish rice) and refried beans with mexican white cheese and homemade flour tortillas. God, I'll stop now. I'm getting hungry.
Every day I get closer to snapping and leaving the country, changing my name and never to be seen again.
Thankyou RuniTravel, I am using this video for a school project
i have to watch this for my spanish class
I *show* this to my Spanish class. Enjoy!
Muy bonito.
Spirits do come back, it is just part of the life going into death to life again in the spirit world. How beautiful.
To be honest, I love to celebrate Day of the dead 💀 instead of haloween even though I'm Russian Descent.
AdamGropper AG53 me too
That’s cool
I love
claro que creemos eso!!! ese es el punto de las ofrendas que el difunto VENGA y coma su comida favorita en vida, no tenemos por que avergonzarnos de nuestras creencias!!
what is the name of the song when the lady is dressing them up?
Tus seres queridos talvez ya no esten fisicamente,, Solo moriran el dia que dejes de recordarlos, VIVIRAN PARA CIEMPRE en en tu corazon y en tu memoria....
Who else has to do this for your studio art assignment
Some celebrate it for fun and to remember the culture and tradition of their ancestors. Others do it as a spiritual native tradition to reconnect with their roots and remember their family who have passed away. We remember the happy moments with them and celebrate that and not mourn them.
Great video...Where is 1 of 3
The Mesoamerican empires definitely thought that life was just a dream, and death is the great awakening. That's pretty deep and beautiful.
It is MOLE, very traditional here in Oaxaca and dellicious as well :)
Yep.
I was born on el día de los muertos.
Stefan looks like James from AVGN :D
The Day of the Dead is celebrated differently threw out Mexico. Most Mexicans don't really believe the dead are coming back. It's more about remembering loved ones that are no longer hear and respecting Dead rather than fearing it. Like the historian lady had explained.
How does this guy find random families to spend time with lol
LazyBunny Mexicans are very welcoming to friends we will show you our culture our traditions anytime
Yep! But for us as mexicans. Halloween "doesn't exist". It is not part of our culture. Its just Dia de Muertos. And we celebrate it for two days (1st and 2nd of November). The first day is for kids or under 18 years old people that. passed away and the second day is for older people like over 18 years old people that passed away. This celebration is not just for Oaxaca. It is celebrate it in all around Mexico. But every state has its own way to celebrate it because eche one has different cultures like Maya, etc. So Dia De Muertos is a beautiful and Special fay for Remembering our lovely friends and family that have passed away but they "never die". They will always live in our hearts. Ben noneofyourbeeswax
It is much nicer than Halloween :) Lovely culture and atmosphere :)
Dia de navidad
***** the Chinese Ghost Festival would intrigue you.
It has a similar purpose to Dia de Muertos, in that it is about honoring the dead and to give them offerings. There are no big parties, but the Chinese burn paper money and paper mache goods shaped like objects to their ancestors at the graves (the belief is that when an object is burned, it is transported to the realm of the dead).
Its also said that during the Chinese Ghost Festival marks the day where ALL of the dead come and visit the living, not just your ancestors. This would even include chinese opera performances for the dead (in empty halls.....empty...of the living at least) and entire meals set up with chairs for the dead.
Death is life. Life is a dream.
It's pretty insulting how he keeps on using the conditional and questions their beliefs. Like when he ponders aloud wondering if they "actually" believe the dead are returning, or when he says Catalina isn't the only one that "thinks" the dead are returning. These beliefs have endured enough criticism and mockery from white people, don't you think?
I agree with what you think. Though I don't think it's "white people" rather than people who don't embrace and appreciate different cultures especially considering he's making a documentary out of it. All cultures have done this to another in history. I've been mocked for my religion in the past, and it has to do a lot with ignorance and not willing to accept differences on outlook of life.
Im not Spanish but when i saw that part I felt that was really offensive
what happens on the second day during this event??
Happy day of the dead!! :))) feliz día de muertos! ((:
Hi, I always wonder what Aji de Gallina would taste like... is there any way I could get your family's recipe?
it is sooooo long
Reply if the only reason why you know about this holiday is because of Coco and book of life
Love Mexican culture
I'm kinda surprised the Vatican hasn't put an end to this.
I always wonder why here in America we don't have huge altars and nice mosaics like they have in Mexico , When I went to Mexico my Parents home of Michoacan they had the most Interesting and beautiful Cemeteries. hmmm
Danny Fenty I think it's primarily a Catholicism vs. Protestantism thing. Protestants seem to never feel totally comfortable colorful and lively art in the church or cemetery or other religious places. They prefer reserved and somber decoration. Of course there are some beautiful huge altars in America, but they are all in catholic homes and churches! I wish there were more Catholics in America so art would be more vivid and religious here. I love paintings and mosaics and statues of Jesus and Mary and all the saints. ❤️🌹💎🌙👼👩🏽🕊🌞✨🍷🍞
Danny Fenty When you say here in America, where in america do you mean to say? North America, Centro America or South America?
el ezkatel Don't you feel weird replying to a comment 4 years old? I do, this person might be dead.
@RuniTravel I've watched it, and since there is the option of leaving a comment, I did ;)
@RBEO22 They had try to end it but it didn't work out
14:28 just kinda made me jump with the audio
I think that for an outside viewer, the differences between Zapotec and Aztec are not so identifiable. And in the broad sense, both cultures don't diverge that much, they share common ancestry. So they probably thought it was OK.
soy el único comentario mexicano?
Mario Perez no pero los demás prefieren escribir en inglés.
Moles ingredients can either be fried or toasted. I prefer the toasted flavor.
because apart of being a tradition its a big business thats why,.... its pretty hard to supress something like that

o si no no nos casamos :D
poco loco
this is a long BBC video
In the last part he just seems confused
Mexicans do not really believe the death are coming, and it is not an excuse just to make a party either. It is just like any other traditional festival, its meaning has changed over time
So it's the day after Halloween?
hello day of the dead is celebrated Nov 1st and 2nd
Xd
Well, Americans have huge freeways and space program. I want a space program :( .
me, #ZAMBRANO4EVER
Is cross dressing really common on day of the dead?
No it's not. I had never heard of that and I'm mexican.
I like men
Bro?
y cres que el espirito de el difunto se va a tragar el mole?? neta?! -_-
Oh man, yeah Oaxaca is multiple cultures/indigenous nations, not just Zapotec, but Mixe, Mixtec, Mazatec, etc. Also, what the hell was up with the Celia Cruz!!! HAHAHA! She rules, but why did they play Salsa music? HAHA! Maybe BBC should of researched the context more. I don't think Cubans would like a Santeria documentary featuring Mariachi or Banda music, lol!
CriticalPedagogy i think because they were playing on that part life is a carnival
this video weak
lol, he doesn't understand a thing...
and they are not aztec!! they were called Meshika. and majority of Mexicans are not descendants of the Meshika. They are descendants of various tribes and mixtures most notably the Nahua people. also Zapotec, Otomi, and other northern tribes from the u.s. who came in and mixed pueblo natives..
ugh thats not mexican music
Whats the songs name at 3:40
